    Activity Change: The Ft Lewis skating rink will not be open for their normal Wednesdayskating. So we have changed our activity to the Ft Lewis bowling alley on Thursday from12:30-2:30.     New Parent Support Program

    The New Parent Support Program (NSPS) is a professional team of social workers andregistered nurses who provide no-cost, in-home parenting support and educational servicesto JBLM families with children ages 0 - 3 years of age. The program helps parents learn tocope with stress, isolation, post-deployment reunions and the everyday demands ofparenthood.

    Home visiting: We offer parents the opportunity to improve their skills as parents and tolearn new skills. There are often many questions about childrens needs and behaviors aswell as how to deal with them. The NPSP is a personalized and effective resource forparents.

    Classes: Registration is required for all NPSP classes. Please call 253-967-5901 to register.Free childcare is available for all classes. Children must be pre-registered with CYSS toreceive care.

    Infant Massage: Learn the art of infant massage from instructors trained to teach theLoving Touch curriculum. Improve sleep and appetite and learn techniques to sooth acolicky baby and increase brain development.

    Common Sense Parenting: is a class to learn new ways to deal with childrens problembehaviors. The classes are led by trained facilitators who are committed to help parentscreate a positive and healthy environment where their family can thrive. CommonSense Parenting targets interventions for toddlers and school aged children.

    Stress Free Parenting: is a class that integrates Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction(MBSR Model) practices to parenting. If you find yourself overwhelmed withparenting and dont have the support you need to be the parent that you want to be,then this group is for you. Parents will learn and practice mindfulness skills to decreasestress.

    24-7 Dad Workshop: Being the best dad you can be is the MOST important kind ofhome improvement you can do for your family,whether youre a new dad, singledad, or a seasoned veteran. Join the 24/7 Dad workshop and learn what you can do foryour family whether you are a new dad or a seasoned vet!

    Dr. Dad:Are you an expectant Dad or have infants and/or toddlers? Join us for thisfree class and learn how to take care of the Well Child, The Sick Child, the InjuredChild and the Safe Child.

    1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for all children, toddlers through teens, 1-2-3 Magicis an evidence-based parenting technique created by Dr. Phelan. Parents will learn howto discipline without arguing, yelling, or spanking. 1-2-3 Magic gives parents specificand effective skills to address negative behaviors such as tantrums, aggression,disrespectful language and much more. You will also learn how to assist your childwith starting a new behavior such as chores, manners, and respectful language.

    Infant Play Group: is a laid back, interactive atmosphere for parents and infants tobegin socializing with one another. Infants may benefit from socializing with otherinfants and learning new ways to communicate. Parents may benefit by receivingsupport from other parents about resources in the area, feeding tips, sleeping routinesand much more. Infant play group is held every Thursday afternoon at 1300 in the

    Rainbows and Raindrops Center. Play Morning: is for all children up to age 5. Play morning is a music centered group

    where children get to sing, dance, and play musical instruments together. Thefacilitators provide the tunes and lead the group in fun filled music activities. Thesegroups occur at Rainbows and Raindrops every Friday at 10:00. They also are held atthe Escape Zone every Friday at 10:30.

    MADIGAN

    1. Department of Pediatrics extended care hours in the evenings and on weekends will nolonger be offered after Sunday, March 31. Curtailment of the Extended Care Clinic is a resultof the current fiscal constraints due to Sequestration. Plans are in place to restore extendedcare hours once funding issues are resolved. Pediatrics schedules appointments on weekdaysfrom 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

    2. South Sound military families and retirees, the Madigan-South Sound CommunityMedical Home will see its first patients on Wednesday, April 3 at its new location in

    3. Support flu research. Madigan is looking for volunteers to participate in an Influenza study.Madigan researchers are studying differences between viruses that cause Influenza-likeillness in otherwise healthy children and adults, including the response of the immunesystem, symptoms, severity of illness and duration of illness. This is a multi-center study thatincludes military medical centers throughout the United States. Researchers hope to collectimportant information that may guide future diagnosis and treatment.     1. Family member scholarships The Fort Lewis Family Member Scholarship Fund isaccepting 2013 scholarship applications to April 10. Applications can be downloaded fromwww.fortlewisscholarship.com. Applicants are encouraged to use the fill-in form. Familymembers of active duty service members, retirees and surviving family members are eligibleto receive scholarships without regard to family income or rank of the service member. Theapplicant remains anonymous until the process is complete. The Fort Lewis Family MemberScholarship Fund typically awards more than $29,000 per year, which comes from charitabledonations from many sources.     Protective factorsare the strengths and resources that families draw on when life getsdifficult. Building on these strengths is a proven way to keep the family strong and preventchild abuse and neglect. This tip sheet describes six key protective factors and some simpleways you can build these factors in your own family.
