Why tissue culture?• Tissue culture is a global/growing trend, SA
and the fruit industry cannot get leftbehind.
• It is the vegetative multiplication ofidentical genetic material in a sterileenvironment.
• Supply of virus and disease-free plantmaterial.
• Plants are uniform and more vigorous.
• Cost effective production.
• Most rapidly growing area of Biotechnologywith a wide range of applications.
• Supply of clonal rootstocks to commercialnurseries.
• Production is not depending onseason or weather conditions.
• The cost of imported in vitromaterial is expensive, unsustainable in commercialenvironment.
• Shortages in rootstocks andcultivars can be managed betterdepending on circumstances.
• A phyto-sanitary accreditedfacility will create opportunity toexport quarantine plant materialto neighboring countries and atthe same time a quarantinestation for importing plantmaterial.
The tissue culture process…
• Need a sterile environment
• Healthy mother plant
• DNA analyses
• Initiation of material
• Optimized medium recipe/protocol
• Multiplication
• Repeated multiplication of material and transfer to fresh medium
• Rooting
• Hardening off
• Systematic process out of high humidity
• Outgrowth
Some of the cultivars …• Clonal apple rootstocks – G778, G213, G969,
(G202, G210, G890, M9)
• Stone fruit – Atlas, Viking, Flordaguard, GF677, Marianna
• Cherries – Maxima, Gisela
• Grapevine – 143B
Operational…
• Roll out phase 1: Building of facility (tunnels & TC facility) - 1’st quarter 2021.
• Phase 2: Next 3 growing tunnels - 2’nd quarter 2021
• Phase 3 +: 2022 – 2026
• JOBS created: 2020 = 10 persons with full project = ±45 jobs
