E3 2014 is now two weeks in the past, so now that the dust has settled it’s time to break down the 

best video games shown off at the show. The 15 games listed below all managed to wow myself, 

or gamers in general who were in attendance at the show, and each of them are definitely worth 

following up on until their release dates. We can only hope that they’ll ultimately end up being 

fantastic,  fun  to  play  experiences,  but  for  now  these  titles  are  definitely  a  step  above  the 

competition. To be eligible for this list the actual game had to have a playable demo on the E3 show 

floor, or at least a guided theater presentation, so the darling of the show,No Man’s Sky won’t be 

found. The VR‐based games shown won’t be on this  list either since most of them are  just tech 

demos at this point and not actual games. Without further adieu I present to you Entertainment 

Buddha’s top fifteen games from E3 2014!   

15. Mario Maker (Wii U)

Nintendo may not have held an official press conference, but the game maker did offer up some 

impressive looking games to play at E3 2014. One in particular isMario Maker, which is essentially 

a 2D level editor for the Super Mario Bros. franchise that lets gamers create their own SMB levels 

using the Wii U GamePad. It’s essentially a game design tool for SMB super fans and burgeoning 

game designers that allows for the creation of old school looking 2D platforming levels, as well as 

HD infused designs that resemble the more modern SMB games for the Wii U. Creative types will 

surely enjoy this game as well as Nintendo super fans. Mario Maker is set to release during the first 

half of 2015.   

14. Splatoon (Wii U)

Splatoon is  easily  one  of  the more  unique multiplayer  games  shown  off  at  E3  2014, which  is 

surprising  considering  that  it’s  a  Nintendo  exclusive.  Nintendo  isn’t  really  known  for  offering 

fantastic online multiplayer offerings, so it was refreshing to see the company take a chance on a 

game like Splatoon. The use of colored paint to set up defensive or offensive maneuvers will offer 

tons of strategy and tactics, and the fact that your character can morph between a human and a 

squid is insanely unique. The Wii U isn’t really known as a multiplayer gaming destination, but that 

may change once Splatoon releases. Splatoon is set to release during the first half of 2015.   

13. Sunset Overdrive (Xbox One)

Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive was a major presence at E3 2014 thanks to all of the marketing 

items littered throughout the expo hall floor. It should also be mentioned that it’s one of the more 

uniquely styled games coming out  in 2014. The over‐the‐top action mixed with a zany narrative 

that features a mega‐corporation’s energy drink turning humans into mutants helps to set this third 

person shooter apart from the crowd. The use of out‐of‐this‐world parkour and wire grinding also 

helps the gameplay of Sunset Overdrive stand out from the pack. If you love ridiculous firepower 

and  a  game  that  doesn’t  take  itself  seriously,  then  you  surely  appreciate  Insomniac’s  efforts 

in Sunset Overdrive. Sunset Overdrive is set to release on October 28, 2014.   

12. The Evil Within (Multiplatform)

Shinji Mikami’s latest survival horror title is set to be one of his most demented gameplay affairs 

to date. The game may not employ tank controls, but the  lack of ammo and other supplies will 

keep you on edge and looking for new ways to kill demons throughout the entire experience. The 

visuals are very cinematic and  so  is  the gameplay, and  there are plenty of  jacked up  scenes  to 

experience and evilness  to encounter. This game definitely packs an atmospheric  feel  that will 

surely make horror  fans happy,  so  it  could potentially make  for a great pre‐Halloween gaming 

experience this fall. If you don’t get squeamish watching people rip their own heads apart to eat 

their brains, then this is a perfect game for your gore‐centric mind. The Evil Within is set to release 

on October 21, 2014.   

11. Ori and the Blind Forest (Xbox One/PC)

This beautiful looking platformed isn’t just a charming looking game. In fact, while in a closed door 

meeting at E3 the game’s developers stressed that Ori is all about controls and gameplay first, and 

then  cute  visuals  second. Ori  and  the Blind  Forestis  a  challenging platformer  that promises  to 

punish you like a Souls title and reward you for your dedication to the cause. The narrative hasn’t 

been discussed at this point, but the tale looks to be an emotional one. Fans of Metroidvania style 

games should definitely put this title on their to‐do lists. Ori and the Blind Forest is set to release 

during the fall of 2014.   

10. Dying Light (Multiplatform)

Techland’s alternate take on the zombie survival genre was definitely one of the more fun to play 

experiences shown off at E3 2014. The focus on parkour and tactics helps to set this slasher apart 

from the studio’s first zombie game, Dead  Island. Jumping from rooftop to rooftop to avoid the 

zombie horde is surprisingly thrilling, and the open approach to each mission will ensure that no 

two playthroughs are the same. The fact that Dying Light also supports 4‐player co‐op is a bonus, 

and  it will surely make  for a great community experience once  it releases. Dying Light is set  to 

release during February 2015.   

9. Alien: Isolation (Multiplatform)

Based on a  short demo of  this  creepy  title  it appears  that Creative Assembly may have  finally 

perfected the art of making a scary as hell Alien video game. The atmosphere and lack of ammo 

makes each mission attempt a fearful adventure that will tweak your senses in all of the right ways. 

At all times you feel like you’re helpless against the lurking Xenomorph, which will make you feel 

like Ripley did aboard the Nostromo. The heavy focus on stealth may turn off gamers that don’t 

love being sneaky, but the overall experience will definitely keep the hair standing on the back of 

your neck until you hit the power button on your gaming machine of choice. Alien: Isolation is set 

to release on October 7, 2014.   

8. The Order: 1886 (PS4)

The Order was one of the few PS4 exclusives shown off at E3 2014, and it played ver similarly to 

the first Gears of War, so fans of pop and cover third person shooters will definitely appreciate the 

gameplay featured in it. This game also boasts some amazing in‐game visuals and character models 

that look near life‐like, and perfectly showcase what the PS4 can do. The narrative seems intriguing 

thanks to its play on the whole Knights of the Round Table motif, and for the fact that a new breed 

of human has arisen to shake up Neo‐Victorian London. The Order also utilizes some  impressive 

future‐tech weapons such as a thermite gun, so the mashup of new school and old school definitely 

helps to set this game apart from other third person shooters. The Order: 1886 is set to release on 

February 20, 2014.   

7. Assassin’s Creed: Unity (Multiplatform)

The latest AC game truly looks to change up the way the franchise has played over the last six titles 

thanks to the inclusion of 4‐player co‐op. The ability to play through the campaign with friends as 

other assassins is amazingly awesome, and the gameplay moments that take place during co‐op 

play are some of the coolest set pieces to ever be featured in the franchise. The tech behind the 

game is insane, so the visuals are impeccable, and the size of Paris is mind blowing. The fact that 

1,000 NPCs can be on‐screen at once without causing a single frame rate glitch or graphical mishap 

is stunning to say the least. Revolutionary France appears to be a fantastic setting for the next AC 

game, so if you’ve been following the franchise since the original, there’s no reason to give up on 

it now.  Lack of  female  representation aside, AC: Unity looks  to be one of  the best entries  yet. 

Assassins’ Creed: Unity is set to release on October 28, 2014.   

6. Middle-Earth: Shadow of

Mordor (Multiplatform)

The latest title to take advantage of the Tolkien franchise is definitely looking like it could be one 

of the best games based on the franchise to date. Many gamers and media members alike thought 

it looked too similar to Assassin’s Creed in terms of its gameplay, but after checking Shadow out at 

E3 2014 I can say that it is far from it. The Nemesis system will ensure that no two playthroughs, 

or even the playthroughs of your friends will ever be the same as yours, and the domination system 

opens up all sorts of strategy and  tactics  for approaching each orc stronghold. The game  looks 

beautiful  and  definitely  has  a Middle‐Earth  feel,  plus  the  story  looks  to  fill  in  a  few  gaps  in 

between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Fans of Tolkien games should definitely add Shadow to 

their to‐do list in 2014. Middle‐Earth: Shadow of Mordor is set to release on October 7, 2014.   

5. Evolve (Multiplatform)

Evolve once again wowed gamers and media members alike at E3 2014 thanks to its 4V1 gameplay 

model  and  the  introduction  of  a  new  monster  and  new  humans.  The  gameplay  is  what 

keeps Evolve in the spotlight though, and its use of four human controlled characters taking on a 

much stronger monster, which is also controlled by another human. The dynamic of playing as a 

human  player  is  fast  and  strategic  thanks  to  the  class  based  hunters  you  can  choose  from. 

Controlling the monster is a power trip, so you do really feel like you’re playing the boss in each 

level. Evolve looks better and better with each new demo, so there’s no denying that gamers will 

flock to it this fall thanks to its successful video game expo appearences. Evovle is set to release on 

October 21, 2014.   

4. Mortal Kombat X (Multiplatform)

One look at this game’s absurd gore is all you need to know that it’s going to be another kick ass 

fighting game from Ed Boon and the combat masters over at NetherRealm Studios. The violence 

redefines the phrase “over‐the‐top”, and may even make some gamers weak in the knees thanks 

to the graphic brutality. The inclusion of three unique fighting stances for each character greatly 

opens up the strategies gamers can employ during matches, and the new roster is packed full of 

fighters  you’ve  never  heard  before. MK  X will  surely  pack‐in  another  fantastic  single‐player 

campaign  experience  in  addition  to  the  traditional  fighting  modes,  so  if  you  enjoyed  what 

NeatherRealm did in MK 9, you should definitely plan on grabbing X when it drops. Mortal Kombat 

X is set to release sometime during 2015.   

3. The Witcher 3 (Multiplatform)

CD Projekt Red’s ambitious open world RPG is easily the most massive game world I got to see at 

E3.  The  sheer  size  of  this  game  is  enough  to make  your  head  hurt,  but  that’s  a  great  thing 

considering that the campaign can offer upwards of 100 hours of content. Visually Geralt has never 

looked better, and the environment is fully fleshed out and can be interacted with. Any location 

you see on the horizon can be visited, so the world truly is your oyster in The Witcher 3. Fans of 

the series have nothing to fear, because this game is shaping up to be something very special, and 

could easily be counted among the best games of 2015. The Witcher 3 is set to release sometime 

during February of 2015.   

2. Destiny (Multiplatform)

Bungie’s Destiny is the studio’s first new IP post Halo, and while it may feature a few resemblances 

to MS’s flagship franchise, this game is definitely a new type of gameplay experience for a console 

first person shooter. The use of MMO‐lite aspects makes Destiny feel fresh and new, and Bungie’s 

design pedigree  is  immediately evident upon  first playing  the game. The world  is massive and 

promotes random exploration with friends, and its Strike Missions offer formidable boss challenges 

that can take even the most well oiled fire teams hours to complete. The  level of customization 

allows each gamer to put their own stamp on their characters, and the Tower hub world is never 

lacking in Guardian dance parties. Destiny could easily be the best console MMO to date when it 

releases this fall, and it definitely has shown enough potential to one day turn into a juggernaut 

franchise like Halo. If you played the PS4 Alpha then you’re already aware of Destiny’s upside, so 

make sure to check out the beta once it goes live July 17th. Destiny is set to release on September 

9, 2014.   

1. Batman: Arkham Knight (Multiplatform)

I really wanted to list Destiny as the best title shown at E3 2014, but after experiencing a theater 

demo  of Arkham  Knight in  action  I  couldn’t  help  but  get  caught  up  in  its  awesomeness.  It’s 

immediately clear that Rocksteady  is back  in charge of the Arkham franchise within the first 30‐

seconds of watching the game in action. Visually, it’s a masterpiece, and the Bat and Gotham have 

never  looked more authentic and huge. The  inclusion of  the Batmobile has been  implemented 

perfectly, and it’s more than just a vehicle for Batman to use to get around the much larger Gotham 

City in Arkham Knight. He can dynamically spring from it and get right to fighting, or depending on 

the  height  of  the  ejection  you  can  gracefully  crash  through  skylights  to  surprise  the  seedier 

members of Gotham City. Batman can remote control this tank on wheels, and he can even use it 

during fist fights to subdue enemies with concussion grenades while he juggles them in the air. The 

level of action in Batman: Arkham Knight is absolutely insane and pure fan service for fans of the 

Bat. If you were turned off by Arkham Origins I can assure you thatArkham Knight will win you back 

and make you fall in love with the franchise all over again. Batman: Arkham Knight is set to release 

sometime during 2015.
