    INTRODUCTION TO RANGE DESIGN

    While a collection iscollecting someone

or something. There is a season forone time launch. It is a design term.Completion of the

The design project Vrange design for semester VI is a projectfor designing toys for kids.

The class began with an introduction to what is range design?along with the difference between the range and thecollection; some of the differences are

Toys were chosen in order to involve wider scope of technicalities andaesthetics in this project.

Ideas were presented in the form of videos and presentation of variousdesigners to inspire our thought in favour of toys. Inspiring personalitieslike Arvind Gupta and Yves Behar were given as an example for

understanding the project much better. Usually toys are to beconsidered as a childish game or a product for a kid, whereas toy is aninteractive product without any scope of hesitation or restrictions. The

avenue of toys now is broader than was perceived.

    WHY TOYS ?06

An industrial expert Mr Sandeep Mukherjeefrom Quetzel had visited to mentor and

guide us through the design project of toys. The design process he followed for this

project has been different from those of theprocesses we followed till date. As we had

finally decided that it was going to be rangeof toys for kids up to the age of 8, we had jot

    down the adjectives of toys.

[Playful, dynamic, exciting, friendly, fun, entertaining, colourful, educative, creative, comforting, technical,

expressive, enjoyment, attractive, scientific, attention grabbing, funny, tactile, freedom, odour, movement,

    nostalgic, elastic, transforming,

innovative, geometric, mobile, crazy, noisy, active, experience, cuddly, engaging, troublesome, festive,

energetic, impactful, tiring, boredom, stress buster, eye-catching, addictive, repulsive, love, reflective, time pass,flow-y, challenging, amazing, story]

    distractive, playful, toothless, immature,destructive

The next step in the process was segregating theadjectives of toys into groups of six, hence dividing the

class into groups of six. The six themes are playful, tactile, entertaining, geometric, technical and festiveand the theme given to us is entertaining. The groupconsists ofArpan Raj, Katta Charvee Reddy, Uttara

Our first exercise as a group was to finalise any 6adjectives of kids in reference with the theme

entertaining. the adjectives in line of priority are

The final six materials in order of priority are

The third step was to decide the materialpossibilities for the themeentertaining and they

    are as followed

  • 7/29/2019 Range Design

    10/33

Now! To begin with the range or for more understanding of the term toy, a list of material was given to theclass and they arepaper, eraser, metal, wood(pencil), plastic, fabric, plasticine/clay. And the task given

was to create a small functional product which would serve as a toy for a kid that depicts the theme and itssub-words.

The term entertaining means different for different people. When seen from the point of view of a child it isthe freedom of his mind. A kid when asked to do something, unlike an elder, he wouldnt think of various

ways of doing it but just do the way he knows it to be. The world of a child is different from the rest of us. Theyhave their own fantasises and dreams and it was our task to reach the depths of his mind. For a naughty kid,

entertaining is more of an interaction while that of a dreamy kid, it would be for all by himself. Sitting allalone and fantasising about his dream world would be it all for him. For a child with his innocent mind, everything seems like a game and thats how he entertains himself.

Entertainment itself holds an emotional connection with the curious thought of any human mind and wetried to tap into that very emotion. A child with fresh knowledge and understanding has notorious thoughts

which cause easy distraction or attraction towards entertaining in order to get fulfilment of his beliefs, fascination and playfulness. A kid with a curious mind is always in search of entertainment, which could be

like asking his mom to narrate a story or having fun with friends, etc. Even a piece of joke could be

entertaining for him for the rest of the day.

A kid in his developing stage would want to conceive different things in different ways. They usually have anaddictive distraction towards things that fascinate them and have got innovative ways of expressing

themselves. Each kid is different. I f listening to a story is entertainment for one, destruction could the same toanother. Unlike us they would get bored of something if done every day, they always wish for new things,

want to do different things, even a toy after few months would not seem as fascinating as it had seenbefore. Creating an interesting toy which would entertain a combination of naughty, dreamy, distractive,

curious, emotional and fascinating kid was the task for us.

    11/33

As a few materials were given to us, we had to decide whatwe were going to do with them that would be entertaining fora kid. The process ...

It was 12:30 pm a sunny and windy day outside. And inside theclass were we stuck with the thought What do we do? letsdo something HOOOOLY said Arpan. HOLY! what are you

are saying Arpan?? all of us screamed. No no no! saidCharvee.

I know what to do while we kept listening to each of ourideas she had something brewing in her mind about an elastictechnique gun. Something like a small catapult, which whenrealised which would go and get stuck on the roof.

Then said Yakshit oh oh oh like the Arjuns Machali ki aankh in

    the Mahabharata.

Oh thats an interesting story exclaimed all of us.Uttara concludes Amazing! lets finalize this as it is culturallyeducative, as it is fun and mazedarand for sure entertaining

The game has four shooters, each has a launcher. Thelauncher is basically a rolled paper with a rubber band

wound around it. There is a horizontally split pencil with asmall plastic parachute attached to it. Which when pulled

with the rubber band on the launcher has to target a dreamcatcher hung on the roof. The task was to target the dream

    catcher while it is rotating.

The concept matches with the characteristics of the kid i.e.naughty, dreamy and distractive.

While the reason behind the parachute is that, when the kidreleases the pencil and if it doesnt strike the dream catcher

the parachute will be reason for it to come down in adreamy way!

That being the end of the brainstorming exercise we began

making the concept into a prototype.

The launcher is made from paper roll with an elastic rubberband in it. The parachute is made with polythene, tied with a

yarn to a base which is a pencil and the dream catcher ismade with a metal mesh with hangings on it for targeting as

well as has a sound element to it.

    CRASH ASSIGNMENT 2

After first ice breaking assignment we got the wider perspective towards toy design aswe all believed toy design is product which directly related to a kid and is meant forthe purpose of enjoyment, whereas toy design is broad product range which allows

one to design any product with lesser constrains. Now after facing real meaning of toy

our task was to understand the reflecting nature of product in terms of emotion. Wewere required to design any product or space which exactly makes one feel theparticular emotion which designer is willing to see.

    14

  • 7/29/2019 Range Design

    15/33

The very first step to any assignmentwas to make groups as we are

required to step out our comfort zoneto get better and fresher thought

towards our next task. After therandom sampling done by our

mentor Mr. Sandeep Mukherjee ,thegroup was as follows:

    Ashmika BeoharKatta Charvee Reddy

    Nillena RajanYakshit Goel

After getting into our group weneeded to identify various basicemotion which child can have after

conceiving any product. It was aninteresting task as we could identifythe personality of student around us

    as per their suggestion.

    JOY

    SADNESSAGGERESSIONCONTENMENT

    PASSION

    LOVE

Sadness is a emotion evoked in reaction to negative situation. As we were required to design anyproduct to make the emotion sad. Sadness may be encouraged by slowing down certain kind of body

chemicals or making your mind realizes that your expectation are still unfulfilled.

    16/33

OHNO!! Being such a positivepersonality we got the emotionsadness which actually made us sad.

But our enthusiasm never let us down, now we were more focused towards

our goal. The very first thing which wedid was to pen down the events,

products, colors and other things whichmakes you feel down. This was an

amazing opportunity to know thepsychology of your group mates

towards various situations. We all cameup with following words

    Scolding, Back bitching, ignorance, bad

news, darkness, loosing, trap, introspection, loneliness, winter, cold, not

in favor, expectation, color dull, mirror, bad dreams, joker, crying, sickness,

    poverty, pale, seepage, sounds,textures.

    STEP3

    STEP

    4

When we are finally through our words wecame to a common decision to create aspace containing various products andscene which make you sad. We startedlisting down the product and visuals like:

Dull colored seepage walls.Rainy environment outside window.Symphony music with l ittle bit soft crying

of puppy .We also thought of creating mirror whichwould reflect you face like sad joker.Room temperature should be around 10degree as per my own option to slowdown blood pressure it is said that peoplehave mood swings in cold environment.

  • 7/29/2019 Range Design

    17/33

We got a very mixed feedback towards our space design as every one has their ownperception towards the emotion sadness. But the very right feedback which we got

was that when the design are exaggerated then they turn the emotion intosomething else. Our attempt was well appreciated but the fact was our design was

reflecting mix emotion of fear and sadness.

We went for an industry visit to familiarise ourselves with the various options available inmaterials which we would require for our making our prototypes.

The first place that we went to was SFA (Studio furniture and accessories) on Bannerghattaroad, headed by Mr. Ravinder Kharab. Mr. Kharab showed us around his whole workspaceand showed us how each single piece of furniture was manually crafted from a design to a

prototype. After the first prototype was made the various processes followed were- making of

the template, cutting and shaping the wood, joining the pieces together, final finishing bybuffing or polishing. After the frame was done the piece had to be upholstered, this was done

by giving it a foam layer and then and then covering it with leather.

We also saw a new technique called moulding with MDF layering. This method addedversatility and flexibility to a hard to mould material like wood. Another thing which Mr Kharab

told us was that scale plays a very important role in furniture. Hence all the prototypes thatwere made were made in 1:1 scale.

SFA designs were a class apart they were an ingenious mix; for the city hippie with a desi heartand others with funky souls. The designs were for a classy and elegant home or office. Nothingwas overdone but just perfect. The small garden and kitchen garden in the premises gave the

    place a home like comfort.

    INDUSTRY VISIT18

  • 7/29/2019 Range Design

    19/33

Amazing fact about SFA was that they were quiet innovative with their waste as they wastenot a single piece of paper. Despite of their amazing furniture manufacturing processes they

had an enthusiasm towards art and aesthetics.

The next place where we went was creative concepts near Konakunte cross. Here we met Mr Anil Prabhu. They used fibre glass with composites to make lightweight accessories, furniture, casings for machines etc. They showed us samples of chairs for Baskins and Robins. We also saw the making of PU foam. The place opened our minds towards the various other mediums with which we could experiment as thismedium is quite light and easy to make if the moulds are ready.Next we saw a pressure dye casting unit. They made small castings with aluminium. Some of this parts werebought by Tata Marutietc. Some other parts were being used as aeroplane parts.

We also saw a small glass industry. They cut glass buffed it and sand blasted it.

Next we went to Quetzel. Quetzel was a semi automated factory which used machines to do most of itswork. But as humans were required to do work on the machines it was a semi automated industry. Theymade furniture. Some of it based on DIY concepts.

Quetzel furniture made furniture for the modern home furniture which everyone would like to keep in urbanhouses. Quetzel designs for a smart home.

visit is an excellent event toescape your mind to new

possibilities of design. During thistour we experienced the

difference of bonding with ourmentors and mates. despite ofexcess competition during this

field visit we laughed together,we learned together, we stood
