Dear Friends of Slot Tech Magazine,

Woo Hoo! Harrah’s Super Tech Chuck Lentine (myterm, not his) has some really great stuff for usthis month with his “Tales From the Bench #3.”

Also this month, Pat Porath is back with Quickand Simple Repairs #116, a short collection ofinteresting repairs. Thank you, Pat, for yet anothergreat look at your day-to-day repair experiences atthe Island Resort.

From Slovakia, Henry Kollar aways impresses mewith his contributions. I didn’t have room for theentire article so you’ll have to “tune in” nextmonth for the next installment of his JCM UBArepair series.

I want to remind you that the next TechFest iscoming up soon. Many events sell out so if you’reinterested in attending TechFest 31 (to be held atthe Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, Louisi-ana) please visit the website at slot-techs.com andfollow the appropriate links to download the en-rollment form and send it in.

In the May 2015 issue ofSlot Tech Magazine, Iwrote an article on is-

sues we were seeing withthe 5 volt power supply thatruns the Prism playertracking panel. Since thatarticle was published, Ihave had a few oddballscome across the benchexhibiting some strangeproblems. They were putaside until I could get some“quality time” with this littlestinker.

The first issue is the unitjust shuts off and that’s theend of it. It does it whenyou are handling it or thething has been sitting inthe same spot for years. Itturns out there are a fewunits with cold solder onthe pigtail leads for themain fuse. Flip the unitover and inspect theseconnections carefully. Ihave found numerous cold

solder joints in the primarysection of this power sup-ply. Starting at the MOV atR101 and the capacitor atC101, the solder may lookfine underneath but give atug on some of these com-ponents. You might besurprised when they comeout in your hand. Thesolder looks like it hasbonded to the leg of thecomponent completely, butit has fractured insidehiding itself. I am nowreflowing all pins on thisboard because of this, which takes a lot of time. Ihave seen numerous incon-sistent components withvery light solder. It variesbetween power supplies.Check every connection!

The next issue becomingmore frequent is the outputvoltage sitting around+3.5vdc and not budgingwith a load or not. Thesehave the classic bulging capat C102 (68uf@400V) whichhas been changed but stillno dice; it just sits there at3.5 volts. I do not have aschematic for this unit so Ihad to start taking notes oftest points from a knowngood working power supply.I wanted to blame the othercaps on the back end butthe voltage was droppingway upstream before them.

Nothing on the secondaryside was dragging it downeither.

Working in a live AC sectionI prefer to work on top ofthe board. There is moremeat on the componentleads to rest your meterprobe on so I don’t getzapped. I almost skippedover it, but there is a smallresistor hiding under theglue or whatever they callthat funk that was under-neath C102. I see the legson the bottom of the boardbut nothing on top. Afterprobing it with a screw-driver, I was able to getunder the glue and it re-

vealed a small resistor atlocation R116. On the goodpower supply the readingwas 1.0K ohms. On the lowvoltage one it was 820ohms. Interestingly, theresistors that I find bad arethe only ones that havethat blob of glue on them.According to my meter, theglue is non-conductive soperhaps it is thermal over-heating by surrounding theresistor? This resistor istied into C102, so when itblows, it takes this resistorout also. But that’s not theend of it. Read on warrior. This just keeps gettingbetter!

Out of circuit, the 1k ohmresistor measured at 1.29k.After replacing this resistor, the output voltage jumpsback to +5.44 volts where itshould be.

The resistor informationfrom Digikey is:Part # S1KHCT-ND (1K

ohm, 1/2Watt, 5% CF Mini)And if that doesn’t work….

When the cap at C102blows out, it fries R116 andcan possibly continuefurther into the circuit intoU101 via the sense line onpin 2. This is a small 8 pinIC chip on the solder (back)side of the board. This IC can control manystates of the power supplysuch as:Safe restart mode for sys-tem fault conditionsUndervoltage protection(foldback during overload)IC over-temperature protec-tionLow and adjustable over-current protectionSoft restart

Replacing this chip hasbrought a few power sup-plies back to life. Just becareful, as there is a sur-prise blob of mystery goounder this chip. My guessit is (was) adhesive thatkept the IC in place during

the soldering process. Ihave found half of thesestill holding the IC when itwas replaced, but the otherhalf the glue has dried upand the chip pops off likepopcorn when heated to beremoved like there waspressure underneath it.Could this be causingstress on the leads ofU101? The jury is still outon this one as we don’t seeenough of these symptomsbut if it is worth reporting,we will do a follow-up ar-ticle about this.

Could this be the replace-ment for the STD-0505Ppower supply that is givingus so much grief? Out often new units deployed onthe floor, one came backtotally dead. Opened it upand found the main switch-ing transistor “somehow”was forced through theboard and broke all of thesolder connections on theother side. See photo onthe next page.

Replacing U101 has brought a few power supplies back to life.Just be careful, as there is a surprise blob of mystery goo underthis chip.

IGT S2000 Reel #3 DisconnectedIGT S2000 Reel #3 DisconnectedIGT S2000 Reel #3 DisconnectedIGT S2000 Reel #3 DisconnectedIGT S2000 Reel #3 Disconnected

You are going to enjoy this one. We had anIGT S2000 throwing fits with the reels. Itstarted out with “Reels Disconnected”which is a general tilt meaning that theCPU has seen the reels but there was ahiccup in the communications. Usuallythis crops up when a door switch (belly, main, etc.) opens while the reels are spin-ning. This was the case on our machine. The main door optic was way off in align-ment and if you looked at the machine thewrong way it would show door open. Say-ing a few choice words to it, I went and gota new set of optics (TX and RX) to takecare of this situation. It turns out thereason the optics were out of whack wasbecause so many techs had “doubleclicked” the door handle to clear the tilt. After I replaced them, “Reel #3 discon-nected” started showing up. The #3 reelworked OK in test mode in the machinenext to it; it would only act up when themain door was closed on the original ma-chine. I thought maybe it was scrapingsomething on the reel glass or LED dis-plays / denom lamp harness when thedoor was closed. Upon further inspection,

the reel basket showed signs of heavyscraping on the left side. What on earthcould have caused this? Close the doorand the answer will reveal itself. It turnsout that the harness on reel #2 would bowout when pressure was applied to it (clos-ing the main door) and the wires werescraping on reel #3 causing it to tilt. This

was going on for a while asthe wires (going to theoptic) from reel #2 werecompletely worn off andshorting out on each other. The wires were separatedand insulated with heatshrink tubing and wire-tied

with the rest of the bundle.Machine is now happy andup for play!

We are starting to haveoverheating issues on our

G20 machines. A tilt on thescreen states “CPU temphas exceeded 90F pleasecorrect the problem.” Atleast it is asking nicely tobe fixed, behaving just likeits older sibling, theTrimline.

These CPU boxes have ablack filter assemblymounted on a track on thebottom. We clean these ona regular basis so that isnot the problem. Afterremoving the CPU from themachine, I placed it on mylap while I was seated infront of the machine andconnected just the powercable. The lid was removedso I could see what was notgoing inside the box whileit was powered up. Sureenough, the little fan onthe CPU core itself wouldrun for a minute and thengo kaput! I took the CPU tothe shop for a cleaning anda fan replacement. The fan

is a SUNON MAGLEVHA40101V4-Q000-G9912vdc. While poking aroundin the CPU, I wanted to seewhat was under the heatsink mounted on top of theprocessor. I removed thefour screws on each cornerof the heat sink. Sureenough, the original heatsink grease was dry andbrittle. The top of the pro-cessor has to be cleaned offas well as the bottom of theheat sink. I scrape thisfunk off with a woodendowel that came with theWMS BB2 OLED panelbutton kits. It does notdamage any surface and isvery effective at scraping offthe old compound, nomatter how dried it is. Theheat sink compound was

replaced with a fresh newcoating and a new fan in-stalled. Machine is nowhappy and up for play!

On the screen it says “HardMeters Disconnected, please correct the error.”Well I suppose so, the ma-chine has never had hardmeters installed in it sinceit was born. It just noticedthey were missing? And ifthat’s not enough, none ofthe buttons on the controlpanel work either.

Normally when this hap-pens in our casino, there issomething in the options

that bombed out requiringa safe storage or RAM clear.Usually, this is accompa-nied by a “Coin in jam”error however not this one.A RAM clear was performedwith no success. Time tostart digging. If this ma-chine ever did have hardmeters, they would belocated against a piece ofPlexiglas on the bottomservice door under the armrest. The factory had wiredthe cabinet in case thisoption was ordered. Theplug for the meters rests inthe left corner near thepower switch. On the end ofthe plug is a jumper thatmust be in place to tell themachine there are nometers. Continuity wasgood on these wires all the

way back to the I/O cardthat controls this. Swappedboth I/O cards since theyboth talk to SENET but hadno luck there. One of myco-workers noticed a smallLED lit on the I/O cardmounted on the side of theCPU on the machine nextto the one we were repair-ing. Since that I/O cardwent to the buttons (whichwere not working) maybethese were related?

Starting with the powerdistribution board mountedon the right wall behindthe monitor it was time totest all the fuses and volt-ages. All of the LEDs werelit. We came across F5(7.5A) which was blown. The window you look intothe fuse element was totalblack indicating a seriousshort. We didn’t have aschematic and traced thisline to supply +12VDC tothe I/O cards. But why did

the fuse blow?

I’m not a big fan of throw-ing fuses in and hoping forthe best without diggingaround trying to find thecause. This can happenwhen someone pulls out ahot (live) I/O card andplugs it back in. Weswapped these cards withthe machine next to it andthey are behaving normallyover there so they were notdamaged. I need to go overevery inch of wiring lookingfor shorts before I startconnecting boards one at atime. While inspecting theback of the right I/O socketI noticed a harness of a fewwires branching off to thetop of the cabinet. Thisharness was followed intothe top box and was con-nected to the candle. Tellme the candle took out thismachine! One of themounting screws had fallenout and the candle had

become loose. “Someone”decided to see if they couldunscrew the candle fromthe outside, forgetting itwas connected by wires. Allof the wires were sliced intoagainst the top metal partof the cabinet. The fuse wasreplaced, everything putback together in the ma-chine and we waited for itto boot up. Sure enough, the fuse held and the“meters disconnected” errordisappeared! Candle wiringwas repaired and re-in-stalled.

We had an olderAristocrat gamethat had a “printer

disconnected” error on itthat did not want to clear.Three different JCM IDO33printers were put in, thesmall board behind theprinter was replaced, thegame I/O boards and mainprocessor boards wereswapped. Thought we had itwhen we swapped thenreplaced the main board. The error cleared and thegame was playable, only tolock up for hand pays thenit came up with printerdisconnected yet again.

All of the connections onthe backplane board werereseated. Game RAM wascleared with the mainboard replacement. It wasnearly impossible for allthree of my spare printersto be bad. One was tried ina working game next door;it worked fine. Game

settings, under printeroptions were the same asthe game next door too.

What was left to check, swap, or replace? A co-worker stated a fewdifferent situations inwhich the whole printerassembly was loose andthere was an issue with asmall cherry switch notmaking good contact withthe back of the printer unittherefore causing a “printerdisconnected” status. Whyin the world would it show“disconnected” and not“printer open?” It seemslike all the other ones ingames, FutureLogic,Transact, Paycheck, theyshow an OPEN status notdisconnected.

Sure enough, the followingday the game was running.Simply bending the smallmetal tab on the microcherry switch located onthe back on the printer

made a better contact. Therefore when the unitslid all the way into thegame it had a “connected”or “closed” status, clearingthe error.
