Top Ten Movies Worldwide by Admissions
Proposal for data application projectclient: imdb
Tressa Randolph
Client Background
IMDb, or the International Movie Database, was started by an international group of movie lovers as a way to keep track of a variety of movie information. While the site performs in a similar manner to a wiki-site, with submissions of information from a variety of individuals (anyone can contribute), there remains a team of administrators and developers who verify the information and distribute it to the website, and more recently, to applications designed for tablet and smartphone technology. IMDb is continuously looking for new ways to make accessing their enormous database of information fast, fun, and easy.
Target Audience
IMDb’s audience is extremely broad, but they all share one thing in common – a love of movies/tv. IMDb is one of the largest and most popular movie databases, with many of their users being those within the entertainment industry, as well as those on the fringes of the industry, such as reporters, photographers, authors, and fanboys. The audience is international, male & female, 18 – 64yrs, broad scope education levels and income levels. They also include both the tech savvy and ludites.
Objectives & Media
IMDb developers have requested a proposed design for an interactive application for a particular set of data provided freely to them by the Unesco Institute of Statistics which gives the audience the chance to view the Top 10 movies viewed by admissions (in Theaters) by Country. This application is to be designed in a way which can be viewed on the website and tablet platforms alike. It should be fun, visually interesting, and communicate a large quantity of data in a simplified manner (as is consistent with IMDb’s search based website).
Obstacles
Probably the largest obstacle to communicating this information effectively is making such large numbers feel relevant and truly large in scale. Also, finding a way to make the interactivity intuitive, fun, and fast will be particularly important.
Key Benefit
Most of IMDb’s traffic is to pages with information on specific movies, cast members, crew members, and movie trailers, but that is not all of the information they provide. They want to make some of the other, currently less interesting data, available to view quickly in an effort to increase interest in the website, improve word of mouth, and expand their site to appeal more to their overseas audiences.
Tone
The tone needs to include the IMDb color scheme, (B&W, golds, yellows, and greys), and integrate nicely with their modern, data and photo heavy style.
