IB Program at a Glance

Randolph Elementary became an authorized IB World School in 2005, and is currently the only authorized IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) in Arlington Public Schools. Founded in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland, the mission of the International Baccalaureate is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. IB programmes have a reputation for rigor, challenging students to be internationally minded and grow into life-long learners. Randolph currently stands in the ranks of 4,700 IB World Schools in more than 150 countries.

IB Parent Quote

“Through the Randolph IB PYP, my children have been exposed to a wide range of ideas, concepts, problems and skills. It’s added a special element of engagement and perspective to their elementary experience, They have a terrific foundation for being global citizens!” - 5th Grade Parent “I love learning about the learner profile every month. I have seen (child) come home talking about what it means to be principled (following the rules even when her parents don’t know), being caring (sharing with her brother), being a risk-taker, etc. She had a Passport Day with her grade and was so excited to come home with a passport and told me about the countries they “visited” and asked me when she could get a real passport to begin to travel. She has also come home and told me about the IB Units they are starting and finishing, and what she likes about them.” – 1st Grade Parent “My daughter is in K so we are pretty new to IB. I love that it emphasizes empathy and global thinking. We are a Foreign Service family and will likely move overseas in 4 -5 years and my daughter will attend an IB int’l school so I am thrilled to have the consistency.” – Kindergarten Parent

IB Themes: The framework for our learning falls under six transdisciplinary themes. These are:

Who we are. Where we are in place and time. How we express ourselves. How the world works. How we organize ourselves. Sharing the planet.

The transdisciplinary themes provide an exploration for students that allow for both local and global perspectives.

IB Learner Profile: What students strive to be! As an IB PYP School, Randolph works towards developing internationally minded students who strive to be:

Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective

IB Attitudes: What students demonstrate. Randolph focuses on fostering these attitudes in students towards people, towards the environment and towards learning:

Appreciation Commitment Confidence Cooperation Creativity Curiosity Empathy Enthusiasm Independence Integrity Respect Tolerance

The IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and car-ing young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging pro-grams of international education and rigor-ous assessment.

These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
