We are Charles and Mindy Carlson. We have lived in the RBC for four and a half years and are so thankful for such a wonderful community. Charles and I have been married for 18 years. The first three years we
spent in northern California (where I was born and raised and my husband went to college). After receiving a transfer with my husband’s
job we have spent the last fifteen here in Texas. My husband is a Director of Engineering at Applied Materials and I am a stay at home mom with three kiddos, Reece (12), Sophia (8 1/2) and Brooke (2). We have a one
year old puppy, Gunner, and a sixteen year old siamese cat, Annabell. We love spending time with friends and family, family movie and game nights, watching our kiddos play sports, bike riding, snow skiing, and
traveling. We recently purchased a travel trailer and are looking forward to many family adventures! We are so thankful to raise our kids in such a
family-friendly community! Photo by Erica Woodford Photography

Ranch at Brushy CreekRound Robin of Fitness Fun May 16, 2015
On May 16th we had a strong turn out for our first ever Round Robin of Fitness in Ranch Trails Park! The goal of the event was to expose residents to local health and wellness offerings that may appeal to them and to give them a fun and diverse work out at no cost!!!
The weather that week was rainy and the forecast wasn’t fantastic, but the rain held off and the temperatures were cool for our residents to enjoy a comprehensive warm up by Ko Ko Fit, 10 minutes of diverse exercise by local vendors at 10 minutes per work out over 6 vendors, followed by a rejuvenating cool down and stretch by Pilates Island Studio! While adults were working out hard and experiencing the various types of fitness offerings, over 20 kids had a blast with kids sparring, athletic training and games with Peak Performance, owned and operated by an RBC resident.
Before, during and after the fitness event, 9 vendor booths were set up on the basketball court to promote more local health and wellness opportunities very close to the RBC. These included nutrition and supplement offerings, oils, chiropractic and fitness.
Snap Kitchen, Front Door Fitness and Marathon Kids couldn’t join us, but left flyers and coupons for us to enjoy. They will plan to be present with us at the next RR of F!
Many, many thanks to the 12 volunteers who worked hard to make the event seamless and to the vendors who offered their time, samples and prizes at no cost to our residents. They are the following:• Pilates Island Studio• iLoveKockboxing• Renios Kettlebells• Crossfit ValordoTERRA• Peak Performance• Ko Ko Fit• ID Life • PerformacoreAdvocare• Salus Chiropractic• n’Caliente Fitness
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you’d like more information around how to contact any of these vendors in particular.

Four-lined plant bugs are brightly colored. Nymphs (immatures) are red while older nymphs start to have wing pads with yellow and black stripes. Adults have fully developed wings that are yellow and black striped. Adults look similar to, and may be mistaken for, striped cucumber beetles.
These insects have piercing-sucking mouthparts which they use to suck out plant juices. The plant bugs suck out chlorophyll and leave a "window" between the upper and lower epidermis of the leaf. Damage appears as white, dark or translucent spots of foliage and is sometimes mistaken for fungal damage. Feeding may also cause curling and browning. Fortunately, damage is mostly cosmetic, but if you are trying to eat the foliage of the damaged plant it may become a problem.
The insects feed on a wide variety of hosts, including fruits and vegetables, annuals and perennials and woody plants. When disturbed, the insects are fairly good at hiding. They either crawl to the underside of the leaves or drop to the ground to hide among foliage.
If you feel the need to manage these insects, try insecticidal soap. If that doesn't work, you can try azadirachtin (neem- concentrate, not oil; it's getting too hot to use oil formulations) or pyrethrins. If that doesn't work then try a residual contact product.

Love Your Dog, Leash Your DogWe love dogs—we really do. That’s why the
association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years? Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you.
We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law—so all residents may enjoy our community.
Another great way you can help everyone enjoy our community is by picking up your dog’s poop.

It’s your regular fitness class or gym time or your running partner is waiting for you at your usual spot and the thought of tying up your shoe laces and getting moving fills you with anxiety; whereas before you couldn’t wait to get out the door. You feel like you just can’t do it – you won’t do it! This could be an example of the dreaded exercise burn out and you need to be smart about your next steps to get your head and body back in the game.
Exercise burn out happens to many; especially those who go full throttle with their fitness program and have been with it for some time. Burn out can be physical and mental. Signs include:• Lack of energy / lack of motivation to work out• Depression / irritability• Decreased performance and slow recovery• Change in appetite and / or sleep habits• Muscle soreness for an extended time – “heavy legs”• Frequent illness
It’s important to identify if this is happening to you and to be committed to implementing changes to get out of this awful phase. Steps to success will differ based on the type and level of burn out, but some key strategies to avoid or overcome burn out include:
Change up your routine type, place, intensity, and approach. A change of place and pace could help you greatly. All work out sessions should not be “all or nothing”. Mix in some low intensity, low volume work and be pleased with whatever you can achieve.
Increase your active recovery (recovery being the key word) days in a week and a month. It won’t ruin your fitness level and it may be highly necessary to allow you to keep training successfully.
Examine your goals and how you are balancing fitness with your life outside of the gym. Are your aspirations too lofty and prioritizing work outs over other parts of your day
that need attention? You may need to take a break altogether until your muscles feel good and you look forward to the work out with joy and excitement.
When in doubt, seek the guidance of a fitness professional who can base their recommendations on your personal history and situation. There is an end to the
burn out tunnel and it feels good!If you have any questions about this or ideas for future articles, please reach out to me! Be well!

As important as food and water, sleep is vital to your well-being. And, if you are a parent, research shows that your children are not getting the sleep they need. According to the National Sleep Foundation, children (ages 6-13) require 9-11 hours of sleep per night and adolescents (ages 13-18) require 9-10 hours per night. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control found that 31% of teens get 8 hours or less of sleep per night and most school age children are getting 8.5 hours.
For growing brains and bodies, not getting enough sleep can have consequences on school and relationships. Teens and children can have difficulty concentrating when sleep deprived. And, according to the Sleep Disorder’s Center, approximately 1,550 people are killed annually in crashes related to drowsy driving. Often, these crashes are caused by young people under the age of 25.
On the contrary, quality sleep has been linked to improved attention, better mental health, and lower risk of obesity. In recognizing the importance of quality sleep, parents can help children establish healthy sleep habits at an early age. If healthy sleep hygiene is established in adolescents, those habits can carry into adulthood.
Healthy sleep habits for teens and children include:• a set bedtime and wake time that does not vary by more than 2 hours
on the weekend• a relaxing bedtime routine such as reading for teens or story time for
children• no “exciting” activities at bedtime such as jumping or wrestling for
children or computer games for teens• daily exercise• healthy diet• no caffeine after 4 PM
If you think your teen or child may have a sleep issue, there are common symptoms you may notice. For adolescents, parents may have difficulty waking them in the morning or observe that their teen is irritable in the early afternoon. Children may require excessive “help” falling asleep, wake many times during the night, or cause their parents to lose sleep. While these symptoms are usually easily addressed by improving sleep habits, more severe symptoms should be addressed with the help of a pediatrician or behavior specialist.
As parents, the value that we place on sleep is a big influence on our children’s attitude toward sleep. Fortunately, there are a lot of practical steps we can take to help our children get the sleep they need. There are too many benefits of good sleep for our teens and children to miss out on them.

Traveling the world and experiencing new cultures is something many dream of but few are able to do. Hosting an Ayusa exchange student provides the opportunity to experience the world while bringing other benefits to their family and local community.
For schools, opening their doors to an exchange student provides their students the opportunity to experience new cultures and expand their understanding of the global society. Not only will students be able to expand their circle of friends, they will be able to reference different perspectives of world events. The new perspectives that both local and exchange students gain through the exchange experience are invaluable for the ever-expanding global community.
Ayusa exchange students are eager to learn and participate in school and community programs. They take their role as ambassadors for their country seriously. Ayusa students are not simply bystanders to their program year; they are active participants looking to make a difference in their host school and community.
Aysua exchange students are strong academic performers, well-rounded, and open-minded. Prospective students go through an extensive interview process in their home countries and are evaluated for maturity, strength of goals, leadership skills, and academic
THE BENEFITS OF HOSTING SPAN BORDERSbackground. Ayusa honors all school enrollment standards, academic requirements and student placement criteria specified in school or district policies.
Host families also reap the benefits of opening their home by sharing their America. Families often learn new things about the U.S. and have different perspectives after hosting. The experiences and memories that are shared during the program last a lifetime and span international borders.
