It was business as usual in terms of function but not location for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Current Operations Integration Cell during exercise Agile Challenge Aug. 23 to 27 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern.

The command’s nerve center

packed up and moved to a deploy-able rapid assembly shelter tent staked out at the barracks as part of exercise Agile Challenge 2010 Phase IIIB.

“It was our aim to make the move invisible to our subordinate units and higher headquarters,” said Col. Bob Gagnon, assistant chief of staff for operations. “People who reached us by phone or e-mail didn’t know we were operating somewhere with-

out our fancy coffee pots and cushy chairs.”

Colonel Gagnon said AC 10 Phase IIIB was all about testing the unit’s continuity of operations. A continu-ity of operations is an organization’s plan of how to continue its operations during catastrophic events that would somehow disable the organization’s normal place of operation.

“A lot of agencies talk about COOP,

but we stressed how to actually do it and did so,” Colonel Gagnon said. “We tested our plan and were able to identify some things we missed such as computer server and systems compatibility.”

Non-commissioned officers are the backbone of our Air Force, and as we partner with develop-ing nations and our NATO allies, it’s vital that we collaborate in our NCO development efforts.

This international military part-nering directly supports U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s priority of building partnership capacity, par-ticularly when working with devel-oping nations or new members of NATO.

Professional military education is what makes us the professional corps we are. We have a strong enlisted corps, but these partner-ship opportunities benefit every-one involved. Over the last year or so, we’ve really stepped up our

NCO development efforts, and the results have been very positive.

From a strategic point of view, we’ve invested a lot of time in these partnership building efforts to help these developing nations continue to professionalize their NCO corps. This year we travelled to Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania to talk enlisted professional development. These trips are extreme-ly valuable both in terms of gathering information and shar-ing best practices as well as establish-ing rapport with our counterparts.

One of our goals is to devel-op compatible curriculums for our NCO academies that are inter-

changeable. This will pay divi-dends here in the European theater of operations, and especially as we deploy together in support of over-seas contingency operations.

So far this year, eight enlisted mem-bers from Turkey, Romania, Germany and Great Britain graduated from our Kisling NCO Academy. We’re able to provide this oppor-tunity as part of the International Military Education and Training program, a vital part of USAFE’s security assistance. USAFE uses IMET

to place particular emphasis on NCO development. We hope to continue to increase participation in the program over the upcoming

year, and I’m certain those airmen will take the professional develop-ment lessons back to their units and help take their enlisted corps to the next level.

I’m confident that as we con-tinue to work with our NATO allies to develop their enlisted force, it will enhance USAFE efforts to build partnership capacity in these regions.

As Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Roy said, these pro-fessional military education oppor-tunities not only give our partner nations the opportunity to learn about us, but we also learn about our service through the interaction. Each military can use the oppor-tunity for continued growth. The strongest military countries in the world have a strong, professional enlisted corps. We are commit-ted to working with our coalition partners.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and within the ranks Army leaders are becoming more engaged at every level. But is that enough, and do they really know what to look for and what to do?

Knowing the telltale signs of someone who may be feeling suicidal is very important. Most suicides and suicide attempts are reactions to intense feelings of loneliness, worthlessness, hopelessness, helplessness and guilt.

Leaders must take a personal interest and know what is going on in their Soldiers’ lives in order to recognize these signs. Promoting a command climate that encourages and enables Soldiers to seek help is also very important. Belittling Soldiers who seek behavioral health assistance and perpetuating the stigma associ-ated with thoughts of suicide is not acceptable and should not be tolerated.

Instead, leaders must ensure their Soldiers

are properly educated and aware of the agencies and programs available for assistance. Leaders should foster a sense of responsibility in their Soldiers to provide watchful care and support to their peers, and leaders should provide sup-port for participation in suicide awareness and prevention activities and training.

The goal of suicide prevention is a continu-um of awareness, assessments, and education and training. Prevention refers to all efforts that build resilience, reduce stigma and build awareness of suicide and related behaviors. Establishing a culture that reinforces help-seek-ing behavior as an appropriate and accepted part of being a responsible Soldier is an important goal of suicide prevention and something that leaders must strive to achieve.

The acronym A.C.E. is easy to remember and will act as a guide for leaders when dealing with Soldiers who display the warning signs.

ASK the question: “Are you thinking about hurting or killing yourself?”

Don’t be afraid to talk about suicide and

be willing to allow the individual a chance to express his or her feelings openly.

CARE: Understand that your Soldier may be in pain. Use active listening to assist and pro-vide relief. Try to keep the individual calm and the situation under control as much as possible. And remove any lethal means, such as weapons or pills.

ESCORT: Get that Soldier to a chaplain or behavioral health professional immediately and never leave the Soldier alone. A suicidal person needs immediate attention. This is critical and will help to save his or her life.

Some helpful Web sites that leaders can use to obtain more information include the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1 Suicide Prevention Web site at www.armyg1.army.mil/hr/suicide, the Military OneSource site at www.military-onesource.com, the Army Behavioral Health Web site at www.behavioralhealth.army.mil, and AKO Suicide Prevention Resources and Services Web site at www.us.army.mil/suite/page/334798/.

Team Ramstein joined a multitude of Air Force bases and Department of Defense organizations in the social media world with

the recent launch of its Facebook page.Recognizing the capabilities of social media,

DOD officials changed the policy in February to allow social media access. U.S. Air Forces in Europe followed suit in May and authorized access to more than 80 social media sites on government computers.

“Social networking sites like Facebook open up a new avenue to improve our processes and com-municate with our Airmen and their families,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Dillon, 86th Airlift Wing com-mander. “But the reach of these sites goes beyond our personal relationships. Airmen scattered around the globe can also use them to tell their story to millions, helping to enhance public support and understanding of our Air Force mission.”

Announcements, articles, photos and vid-eos placed on the base’s official Web site, www.ramstein.af.mil, are fed onto the Facebook site allowing another avenue for Ramstein and the com-munity to stay informed of what’s going on around the base.

The wing’s page also serves as a networking hub where fans are encouraged to post discussion topics, leave comments and even post their own fan photos and videos. To access the fan page, go to www.facebook.com/pages/Ramstein-Air-Base-Germany/129358620440768.

When looking for the page on Facebook, type in “Ramstein Air Base, Germany” and look for an image of C-130s on the flightline. There are many other pages that use the “Ramstein” moniker; some of those are affiliated with the base and some are not. Users will need to look carefully at what is official.

Most Facebook sites that are “official” will state that on the main page and will be registered with the Air Force. Units interested in standing up their page should also be registered and linked to the base’s main page.

“We realize this is a social environment and a lot of groups and organizations will want to have their own pages — many have already started doing so,” said 2nd Lt. Christopher Diaz, 86th AW Public Affairs. “We’re not looking to control everyone’s efforts, but we do want to help and make sure they’re prop-erly registered. If people work with us, we can help network their information and pass along a lot of lessons learned.”

Though the base waited to jump into the social media realm, it wasn’t for lack of interest in the platform.

“We’ve been monitoring other Air Force pages and social media platforms for a while to see which might be the most value-added for us to invest in,” Lieutenant Diaz said. “At the same time, we’ve been testing other tools we can bring to the page, versus just re- purposing content from other sites. In the end, we hope it’s a site that is useful to our community and families.”

In addition to the base’s Facebook page, Col. Stephen Lambert, 86th AW vice commander, has also launched his own page as another way to communicate directly with Airmen.

“Feedback is important, so we want Airmen to know they have a way to reach out to leadership on issues important to them,” Colonel Lambert said. “This doesn’t circumvent the chain of command, but it’s another way to gauge the climate here and be able to share information quick-ly. This will allow us to focus on other aspects of life that includes families as well.”

Issues of note include providing a mechanism for incoming personnel to connect with Team Ramstein members.

“We’re working to enhance our sponsor program and the information available to incoming personnel on our public Web site,” Colonel Lambert said. “But we also know that everyone’s situation is unique, so by connecting newcomers to our Facebook page, we can link them with other people who’ve already made the transition here and can interact with them on a more personal level.”

In addition to assisting newcomers, officials believe the page will serve as a great way to share experiences, alert the

community of issues and share events and stories to those who have an interest in the base.

They also remind Airmen and their families to practice good operations security when posting on the page and other social media sites.

“The Air Force has made it clear that this social media path is one that will continue,” General Dillon said. “However, we should be deliberate and careful in our use of this technology. We want our Airmen to represent the Air Force in a professional manner, and while doing so, keep OPSEC and force protection concerns in mind when posting information.”

Ramstein joins social networking realm

Kaserne with nothing more than a laptop in hand and become fully operational a few hours later.

“Our commanding general’s intent was to basically evacu-ate the COIC as if something had cut off all communications,” said Maj. Jay Cash, deputy chief of operations and COIC battle major.

Major Cash said the exercise met the requirement mandated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in which all federal agencies are required to implement their continuity of operations and be operational within a certain amount of time. That requirement also includes testing, training and exercising of personnel, equipment, systems, processes and procedures.

“We went a step further,” Major Cash said. “Normally, we would move into a facility with some established capabilities. We tested moving into a tent and establishing the physical structure in field conditions and integrating our COIC staff into that environment.”

The COIC is comprised of representatives from the 21st TSC staff as well as partner support agencies. In conducting its 24/7 operations and information processing, the COIC uses a myriad of complicated data and video systems.

Bringing that capability to life in the tent was the job of G6. The heart of that environment was setting up secure and non-secure Internet communications and a multitude of compli-cated data and video systems.

“Upon notification, we were up and running within the established time frame,” said Master Sgt. James Hall, opera-tions NCOIC, information services. Sergeant Hall and a crew of more than 20 Soldiers and civilians provided miles of cable, video inputs, audio systems, servers, routers and other equip-ment to set up the network backbone.

“It was good training,” Sergeant Hall said. “The Soldiers and civilians did an excellent job of making sure we were able to do continuity of operations.”

Power was supplied by 21st Special Troops Battalion in the form of field generators that maintained 24-hour basic life support systems.

Department of the Army civilian Nelida Rabassa said she didn’t mind working out of the tent as she is used to doing that as a former Soldier.

“I think most of the retirees didn’t mind,” said Ms. Rabassa, a G3 operations specialists. “It was a suitable environment for civilians. We had nice facilities, and nearly everything we had back in our office. It was good training for civilians, especially those who are mission essential and have to go forward.”

Ms. Rabassa did say there were some hiccups, such as minor system capability issues and sharing telephones.

“All-in-all, it was a great exercise,” she said. “The sup-port from G6 was great. There were no disruptions to daily operations and, as a staff, we didn’t miss a beat.”

Where’s The Heat?by Ron UeckerKMC Housing Office

Fall is here, and there is a chill in the air and the leaves are turning color.

So, where is the heat? Before answering that question, let’s provide some background. Most of the buildings in the KMC, including housing, are con-nected to central hot water heating plants. These plants produce hot water and dis-tribute it to our buildings to provide building heat through radiators.

We are blessed with mild temperatures from mid-May to the beginning of October. The average monthly temperature for May through August is 62 degrees Fahrenheit. During the summer months, so little heat is needed that heat gen-erated by people, cooking stoves, household applianc-es, lights, sunlight through windows, etc., is adequate to keep inside temperatures comfortable.

In 1992, we began turn-ing off portions of the cen-tral heat system during the summer months to save fuel costs. That first season, we saved more than $400,000 in heating fuel.

So, when is the heat turned on? The rule is, the heat is turned on after five consecu-tive days with average daily outside temperatures below 55 degrees F and a five day forecast for more of the same,

as determined by the weather squadron. Historically, this has usually occurred dur-ing the first two weeks in October.

But I am still cold. What do I do? First, conserve the heat you already have.

Close your windows and window coverings at night to reduce heat loss through the windows. Keep the doors to seldom-used rooms closed to keep heat in the rooms you use most.

Second, take advantage of natural heating. Open drapes and rollladens during the day so that the sun can warm the inside of the room like the sun warms the inside of your car. If it is warmer outside than inside, open the win-dows to allow the warm out-side air into the room. Close the windows in the evening when the outside tempera-tures begin to drop.

Once the heat is on, how do I turn it on?

Your radiator control is both the thermostat and the valve that controls the amount of hot water that flows through the radia-tor. For the control to work properly, it must be sur-rounded by free circulating air. Do not cover it with

clothes, curtains or furniture, as it will not work properly.

The radiators do not pro-vide instant heat. Hot water must pass through the radia-tor and the heat from the radiator transferred to the room. Set the thermostat and allow time for the tempera-ture of the room to come up before making any more adjustments.

Radiators are usually located below windows, which are normally the cold-est parts of a room. A setting of 3 should provide comfort-able heat for the entire room.

The thermostat radiator combination is a simple and reliable combination. There are a few moving parts to malfunction. It is possible for the valve to malfunction, in which case there will be either no heat or too much heat. If your radiator is mak-ing gurgling noises, it most likely has some air trapped inside. The air should be removed for optimum per-formance.

By following these sim-ple steps, you will feel com-fortable, you will help save energy, and you’ll be good stewards of the resourc-es provided to us by the American people.

In 1992, we began turning off portions of the central heat system during the summer months to save fuel costs. That first season, we saved more than $400,000 in heating fuel.

Turain said. “I assure you my performance will be guided by the heritage, honor and valor my mentors and all those who I have worked with have displayed, and I will serve with their spirit in my actions.”

Brig. Gen. Michael Kim, 21st Expeditionary Mobility Task Force commander, presided over the event and praised Col. Kimberly Corcoran, the previous wing commander, for her efforts in paving the way for Colonel Turain.

“(Colonel Corcoran) took one of Air Mobillity Command’s newest wings and thrust it to the forefront of our nation’s com-bat capabilities,” General Kim said. “This doesn’t just happen, it takes leadership. (She) built an organizational culture that moti-vated and inspired our Airmen to exceed expectations. What the AMOW has done in the past couple of years has been nothing short of phenomenal.”

Colonel Corcoran is moving on to McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., to serve as the vice com-mander of the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center.

COMMAND, from Page 1

by Gen. Roger A. BradyU.S. Air Forces in Europe commander

As we approach the Labor Day holi-day, I would like all of us to pause for a moment and think about what’s important in our lives.

Ask yourself how your life, or the lives of your family and friends, would change in the aftermath of a terrible mishap. Each year we emphasize safety during the Critical Days of Summer because histori-cally, the majority of fatal mishaps occur during this period.

Unfortunately, since the start of the Memorial Day weekend, the Air Force lost 12 Airmen this year to preventable mishaps. Four of these fatalities happened in U.S. Air Forces in Europe.

• Each loss changed the lives of friends and family forever.

• Each loss affected a flight, squadron, group and wing. • Each of the four USAFE fatalities was a huge loss to

the USAFE family.Though it is always difficult to accept the loss of anyone

under any circumstance, it is even more difficult when that loss was due to risky or reckless behavior. When friends or family know about reckless behavior and are unwilling or

unable to stop it, it becomes harder still.Remember to draw upon the wingman

concept to help keep each other safe and to ensure we are doing our jobs correctly.

We must apply this belief to every situa-tion. Being a good wingman is about more

than being the designated driver. It is about influencing performance and preventing mission failure.

Please take the time to help those who take on too much risk or partake in reckless behavior. We do not want to lose another Airman to a preventable mishap.

Each of you is far too valuable to your friends, your family and the Air Force.

All that said, you should all enjoy the holiday weekend with your family and friends and take advantage of these last days of summer. The point is to do it safely and make smart decisions about how you choose to enjoy yourself.

Thanks again for your incredible service.

General Brady: Please stay safe this Labor Day weekend

You can make a difference

by Lt. Col. Doron BreslerKMC voting assistance officer

Has the depressed economy affected you and your family? Are you aware of Arizona’s attempt to crack down on illegal immigration?

There are many issues today that directly impact your lives or the lives of your family members back in the U.S.

If you ever thought your vote didn’t count, you were gravely mistaken. Every vote makes a difference in elections. In 2000, only 527 votes gave the Republicans control of Florida and ultimately the presidential election. In 2006, the Democrats won Virginia and took control of the Senate by 9,329 votes. On Nov. 2, America will vote on 36 percent of U.S. Senate seats, 100 percent of the U.S. House of Representatives seats, and 36 states will elect or re-elect their governors.

There are so many issues that make a dif-ference in your daily lives, and only you have the power to choose who makes the decisions that can affect millions of American lives. Remember, if you don’t vote you have no right to complain. It is your civic duty to vote.

For questions about voting or registering to vote, call 480-VOTE (8683) or visit www.fvap.gov.

You can also stop by the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily from Oct. 12 to 18, where we will have federal write-in absentee ballots to fill out. Ballots should be mailed by Oct. 25.

Ramstein and U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern ask all members to celebrate the Boys & Girls Club of America Day for Kids and take the pledge to spend meaningful time together, to

talk, to listen, to learn, to play, to share a moment, create a memory and make a kid’s day.

The Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids is a day set aside each year to celebrate and honor America’s children by spending meaningful time with them. It’s about celebrating kids — children, grandchil-dren or any child in need of mentoring.

The Day for Kids fosters relationships between children and adults, which helps children develop positive self-image, sense of belonging, usefulness and purpose.

This year’s Day for Kids will be held Sept. 11 at Donnelly Park on Ramstein.

To begin the celebration, the Air Force Youth Sports opening day ceremonies will commence at 9 a.m. Immediately after the ceremonies, the Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids activities and games will be available, including bouncy castles, face painting, and arts and crafts. Enjoy a free lunch with your child from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Every child needs a safe place to learn, grow, explore and have great mentors,” said Dorothy Choate, Airman and Family Services flight chief from the 86th Services Squadron. “Our children are special. They are the true heroes and today we want to invite the KMC youth and families to spend a meaningful day of play and celebrate being a kid.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for this year’s Day for Kids event can contact RJ Garrison at [email protected] or Alysse Seligman at [email protected].

Ramstein wins USAFE Dollar Daze prize

Henry Holden, Ramstein Bowling Center manager, presents Chief Master Sgt. Gary Gerhart, U.S. Air Forces in Europe A4, with a large check. Chief Gerhart won $500 during the USAFE Dollar Daze program.

The Ramstein Bowling Center in conjunction with the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Dollar Daze Program awarded Chief Master Sgt. Gary Gerhart, USAFE/A4, with a $500 cash prize Aug. 23.

Dollar Daze was a USAFE-wide bowling promotion that highlighted $1 games every Sunday in May, June and

July. The program was intended to retain spring league bowlers and increase summer bowling.

Chief Gerhart and his family bowl all yearlong. During Dollar Daze, they bowled two to three Sundays a month.

All authorized USAFE participants were entered into an official drawing, which took place Aug. 13. Participants were eligible to register one time for each game bowled during the Dollar Daze promotion.

“I was very surprised and felt very lucky,” said Chief Gerhart about being notified he had won the $500 cash prize through USAFE’s Dollar Daze pro-gram.

The Ramstein Bowling Center has many bowling events throughout the year, such as cosmic bowling, tournaments and family days.

Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day gives the members of Team Ramstein the chance to relax before the rush of the upcoming operational readiness inspection and the fall/winter season.

Labor Day originally began in New York City in 1882 to exhibit the strength and morale of the trade and labor organizations. The first Labor Day celebration consisted of a street parade, followed by a festival for the labor union workers and their families.

“As a child, on Labor Day my family went on road trips,” said Christine Gillaspie, American Red Cross field office coordinator. “Now that I am older, we spend family time together and barbe-cue.”

Since Labor Day is generally an “off day” for most federal employees, family-themed activities are a common sight on Labor Day weekend.

“And who doesn’t enjoy a paid day off work?” said Nicola Linscott, Ramstein’s Value Added Tax office clerk.

After the recent operational readiness exercise, the holiday gives family members a chance to relax after working unusual hours.

“My husband usually works long shifts, so it is really nice to have a chance to spend time together,” Mrs. Gillaspie said. “The extra family time is great and it’s nice to have an excuse to travel.”

Members of Team Ramstein will spend their holiday enjoying family activities, travels abroad and time off from work.

For those who plan to stay in the area, the 86th Services Squadron offers alternatives such as specials on bowling. Check out “Was ist Los” at www.86thservices.com.

Virtual high school opens its ‘doors’ to learningby Elaine Wilson American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON — The Defense Department’s newest high school is devoid of walls or windows, yet it has opened its “doors” this year to students around the world.

The DOD Education Activity’s vir-tual high school is an accredited distance learning program for military students, whether they’re geographically separated, transitioning between schools or just deal-ing with a scheduling conflict.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to close gaps and enhance students’ educational experience in a 21st century environ-ment,” said Marilee Fitzgerald, the activ-ity’s acting director. “I think it opens up possibilities for learning that we have yet to understand (and) yet to explore.”

The virtual school offers students 48 online courses in a wide range of disci-plinary areas, including foreign language, math, science, social studies, language arts and physical education, as well as 15 advanced placement courses.

The school also is equipped to offer English as a second language and special education, said Patricia Riley, the chief of the activity’s distance learning and virtual school.

The school is primarily designed for students eligible to attend a DOD school but are living in remote locations, Ms. Riley said, noting that students from as far away as Australia and Papua New Guinea already have enrolled.

Most attend local schools but need courses such as U.S. history to graduate, and the virtual high school can help to fill this gap, she said.

Next up on the priority list are stu-dents currently attending DOD schools, Ms. Riley said. Students are asked to seek traditional, in-school classes first but can request online access when there’s a scheduling conflict or if a required course isn’t offered in the school.

The virtual school also is useful for students transitioning from overseas to stateside, or from a DOD school to public school, who need to ensure they meet the requirements for their new school, she said.

“This school is particularly important for military dependent students who do move more often,” Ms. Riley said.

The courses are self-paced, but students still receive support every step of the way. Teachers are located in three hubs: Wiesbaden, Germany; Camp Humphries, South Korea; and Arlington, Va., where they offer real-time online support to stu-dents scattered worldwide in a range of time zones, Ms. Riley said.

This live support enables Web con-ferencing, peer-to-peer data sharing and question-and-answer sessions with teach-ers.

“They’re also there to simulate the true classroom experience of a face-to-face environment,” Ms. Riley said.

For the 12th time, visitors of Gräfenstein Castle near Merzalben will be taken back to the Middle Ages during a medieval fest taking place today through Sunday. The event, organized by the community of Merzalben and the Phantasia Historica medieval group, will feature musical enter-tainment, juggling, show fi ghts, fi re shows and children’s activities.

“From all over Germany, knight groups, lansquenets, jugglers, music groups, min-strels and craftsmen dressed in medieval costumes will make their appearance,” said Helmut Simgen from Pantasia Historica.

In a knights’ camp, the Federfechter knights groups will present sword fi ghts and lansquenets will perform funny plays. The Nimulus juggler group will show off their skills and present a fi re show. The musicians Triskilian, Deus Aie, Jean, Frederik Finn, Jaques and Nicola will provide musical entertainment and perform medieval songs on unique instruments.

“Children also can enjoy the Middle Ages by play-ing on Tjalf’s dragon boat, listening to Absolom’s and Marie’s stories, and watching William’s magic skills,” Mr. Simgen said.

Craftsmen such as blacksmiths, weavers, wood-carvers, stone masons, potters, soap-makers and basket-makers will demonstrate crafts from the

Middle Ages. The crafts will also be on sale.A variety of food and drink specialties will also

be available.Market activities, music and juggling are sched-

uled from 5 to 10:30 p.m. today. The fest will be celebrated from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission is €6 for adults, €3 for children, and children shorter than a sword (which is 1.30 meters) are admitted free. Today, tickets cost half price. Visitors in medieval costumes only pay €3. A ticket for all three days is

€12; the two-day ticket is €10. “We expect about several thousands

visitors who want to experience the Middle Ages,” Mr. Simgen said.

Gräfenstein Castle is a rock castle near the town of Merzalben. The upper castle is built on a 12-meter-tall oval-shaped sandstone with a keep with seven corners and a great palace three fl oors tall. In the lower castle, there are parts of the forc-er and remaining walls. In its beginning, Gräfenstein served as an administration center for the surrounding farms and vil-lages and had the defense capacity.

In 1220, Gräfenstein Castle was fi rst mentioned in a document. During the Thirty Years’ War, Gräfenstein was burned down accidentally in 1635, when imperial troops, who used the castle as garrison, were careless with fi re. From then on, Gräfenstein Castle has been in ruins. In the

20th century, the castle was partially renovated. It is now open to visitors throughout the year.

Merzalben is located northeast of Pirmasens. Travel on B270 toward Waldfi schbach-Burgalben, then left to Donsieders, Clausen and Merzalben. Past Merzalben, take a right toward the castle. Visitors can walk up to the castle by foot or take a shuttle bus for the fee of €1 leaving from the visi-tor’s parking lot.

MANNHEIM, Germany — Sgt. Nicole Jenkins, a corrections offi cer with U.S. Army Confi nement Facility-Europe, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, took the Army commercial that said “Soldiers do more before breakfast than most people do all day” to heart. She has lived it the last four years and shows no signs of stopping any time soon.

Recently selected as the 2010 Army Corrections Command non-commissioned offi cer of the year, Sergeant Jenkins will reach four years in the Army in October but has already achieved a lot in her short time in service.

The Foxborough, Mass., native is already a mem-ber of the Sgt. Morales Club and has competed in several competitions. After winning the ACC NCO of the Year competition held Jan. 22 to 23 at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., she went on to compete as the ACC representative at the National Capital Region NCO of the Year Board held July 12 to 16 at Fort Belvoir, Va., where she placed third as the only female in a fi eld of 14 NCOs.

The competition included weapons qualifi ca-tion and refl exive fi re, a physical training test, a formal board, combatives, a day and night urban land navigation course, and a long overland course with multiple stations where each competitor had to complete specifi c warrior tasks like fi rst-aid and reacting to an improvised explosive device. The challenges she faced as the lone female competi-tor were illustrated by her experience during the combatives double elimination tournament where

she had to compete against much larger males.

“In the fi rst round I was paired up against a guy who weighed 215 pounds. I didn’t win but he didn’t make me tap during our fi ve minute round.”

Nor did she tap out when it came to taking the PT test, which was scored by the male standards. Not only did she hold her own, she outperformed every other NCO competitor. It was a grueling few days but Sergeant Jenkins said it was well worth it.

Although her successes might make it seem like she was destined to be in the Army, she did not always feel that way. It was her promotion to sergeant that was most signifi cant, she said.

“I didn’t know this was what I wanted to do with my life until after I got promoted to sergeant and became responsible for Soldiers,” she said.

What began as a three year commitment has become a calling and a career for Sergeant Jenkins.

“I didn’t think it would be such a good fi t, but I think it turned out for the best. I really didn’t think about law enforcement before, but I really like it,” she said. “The Military Police Corps is a really unique experience and I’m glad I got to be a part of

it. You serve people, whether on the road or in the prison, who know they need you but don’t neces-sarily like you.”

Since joining the Army she has received a bach-elor’s degree in social science from the University of Maryland and is currently enrolled at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology where she is working on a master’s degree in forensic psychol-ogy.

Jenkins will soon be moving on from USACF-E. She has been selected to become a drill sergeant at the MP school at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where she will continue to set the standard for Soldiers.

by Capt. Tristan HinderliterLaghman Provincial Reconstruction Team Public Affairs

One Ramstein Airman recent-ly helped provide refresher training for his teammates on the Laghman Provincial Reconstruction Team at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan.

Along with Master Sgt. Simon Deyell, PRT non-commissioned offi-cer in charge of medical operations and senior combat medic, and fellow medic Staff Sgt. Nikolia Saunders, Senior Airman Jeffrey Marr, deployed from the 86th Medical Operations Squadron here, trained about 50 mem-bers of their PRT on Combat Lifesaver skills.

The training is provided to most non-medical Soldiers and Airmen before they deploy to Afghanistan — the course teaches advanced first-aid and lifesaving procedures beyond the scope of the self-aid/buddy care skills taught to all servicemembers. The PRT rotation currently at Mehtar Lam has been in place since February, so this was a good time for refresher training, said Capt. Philip Hotchkiss, a physician assistant deployed from Tyndall AFB, Fla., and the PRT’s senior medical officer.

“Unfortunately, these are perish-able skills,” Captain Hotchkiss said. “If you don’t use them occasionally, you will either lose the skill com-pletely or freeze when attempting to recall them during stressful situations. Therefore, during the summer months when kinetics in Afghanistan have tra-ditionally heated up, we thought that a

review would sharpen the skills of our warriors, to improve reaction times and save lives.”

The medics serve in various capaci-ties at their home stations — Sergeant Deyell is the NCOIC of Family Practice at Peterson AFB, Colo., while Airman Marr specializes in pediatrics — but while they are here, they are all considered “combat medics.”

As part of the training for this deployment, they attended a two-week course at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on what the Army calls “Tactical Combat Casualty Care.” The training focused on immediate actions to take if some-one is injured on the battlefield — such as how to stop bleeding, treat a sucking chest wound, open someone’s airway or splint a fractured bone.

“It was basically a two-week trau-ma course on how to be self-sufficient without a provider around,” Airman Marr said.

“In addition to the trauma train-ing, the instructors also taught clini-cal aspects of care, such as various medications and what they’re used for,” Sergeant Deyell said. “They try to refine your skills and get you ready for what potentially could happen in theater.”

Airman Marr is part of the four-person medical section that cares for more than 100 individuals on the PRT, and they also provide support to other units on the FOB, includ-ing Task Force Iron Gray and the Agribusiness Development Team. The medics spend much of their time treating people for ailments such as dehydration, skin problems, gastro- intestinal distress, communicable dis-

eases or orthopedic issues such as muscle, joint or back pain, they said.

At least one medic also goes on every PRT mission outside the wire — for Airman Marr and Sergeant Saunders, that averages two or three trips a week. As the NCOIC, Sergeant Deyell manages the schedule and cov-ers missions for the other medics when they have tower-guard duty, go on their mid-tour leave or when he gets “FOB fever,” he said.

Airman Marr, who worked as a welder for three years before join-ing the Air Force, said he enjoys the camaraderie of going out on patrol and helping provide security along-side the Army security forces Soldiers who accompany every mission.

“In the field, the medics give the warriors they protect an addi-tional dose of confidence,” Captain Hotchkiss said. “Having their ‘Doc’ — the colloquial term the Army uses

for combat medics — along on the mission gives the troops the reassur-ance that if something goes wrong and someone gets hurt, they will receive prompt and proper care.”

In addition to treating U.S. and other International Security Assistance Force troops, Airman Marr and the other medics also sometimes have the opportunity to treat local nationals.

“Our Air Force medics have been in high demand during this deployment not only by our own Soldiers and Airmen, but also by the local national population,” Captain Hotchkiss said.

“They have been very compassion-ate in treating the Afghans,” he con-tinued. “I’m really proud of the work our medics are doing here — they freely give of themselves day and night, seven days a week, without hesitation.”

Trippstadt will celebrate its annu-al “Kohlenbrennerfest,” or charcoal burners’ fest, Saturday and Sunday. Besides the traditional burning of charcoal, the fest includes demon-strations of old craftsmanship, dis-plays, children’s activities and live music.

Members of local clubs and asso-ciations are in charge of demon-strating the burning of charcoal. Traditionally, a week prior to the event, they pile up huge amounts of wood to build a coal kiln. A kind of chimney is surrounded by many sticks and covered with turf. The brushwood in the chimney is lit and the kiln starts burning. Then the charcoal burners watch the burn-ing, day and night, for up to a week, keeping the air outside the kiln. If the smoke coming out is blue, the burning process is correct. After the burning, the kiln falls down. The big charcoal pieces are chopped up, the others are raked, and all is collected and packaged.

During the fest, the whole process will be demonstrated again. One kiln will be built, another will burn, and a third will already be burned down. Visitors can buy the charcoal.

In former times, charcoal was needed to smelt iron ore. Due to the abundance of the forest and the waterpower of the Moosalb creek, the first smelting-works were estab-lished in the Trippstadt area in 1728. After many trees had been cut down for smelting, a new kind of tree, the fast-growing white pine, had to be planted. It was the perfect tree for charcoal making.

Mayor Manfred Stahl will officially open the event at 5 p.m. Saturday near the coal kiln, which will be lit. There will be musical enter-tainment and gun salutes. The charcoal burn-ers’ fest will be celebrated on Hauptstrasse. Local clubs and restaurants will serve region-

al food specialties in their yards. A display of photos by Beverly Nevers

will be displayed in Gienanthsaal behind the Schloss-Stuben restaurant, and photos showing the fest during the last 30 years will be put up on the road leading to the char-coal kiln. The Musikkapelle Trippstadt will present a concert at 6:45 p.m. in front of the town hall. Throughout the evening bands will perform in the yards.

On Sunday, activities will begin at 10 a.m. with a hike for families starting near the town hall. The traditional smithy fest with smiths from all over Germany and neighboring countries will start at 11 a.m. in the Schmiede Huber. Goldsmiths and sil-versmiths will demonstrate and show their fine and elaborate works. A coppersmith will create roses and a blacksmith will produce individual nails. Fest-goers can also visit a special exhibition in the iron works museum.

A book bazaar and children’s flea mar-ket will be set up on Hauptstrasse, and at 2 p.m. children can get involved in special kids’ activities. All year-round, the Trippstadt Tourist Information office is selling charcoal. A big bag is €2.50 and the little one costs €1.50.

Trippstadt is an official health resort town because of its good climate and oxygen-rich air. It is located 12 kilometers south of Kaiserslautern.

or the second time, the city of Kaiserslautern and the local advertising association “Kaiser in Lautern” will sponsor a Halloween city parade Oct. 30.

From 11 a.m. to midnight the city will be full of weird people, witches, magicians, mon-sters and vampires showing off their colorful costumes. The parade is known to be unique in Europe, and it will be combined with a pumpkin

spectacle. Children will have their own parade starting at 3 p.m. They

can get involved in Halloween face painting and pumpkin carving. The nicest costume and most creative pumpkin will be awarded prizes.

Marching bands and percussion groups will walk through the center of town all daylong, before the main parade begins at 7 p.m.

Anybody who is interested can watch or walk in the parade wearing Halloween costumes or ride in a special Halloween-decorated vehicle. Registration is required to win prizes.

“Last year, 35 floats with about 1,000 participants were in the parade,” said Alexander Hess, managing chief of the adver-tising association. “More than 30,000 visitors came to watch this spectacle in a great atmosphere.”

Mr. Hess is expecting several thousand participants for this year.

“We got registrations not only from people from the regional area, but also from interested groups from Baden-Württemberg and Switzerland,” Mr. Hess said.

Those with vehicles can win up to €3,000 for the most amaz-ing vehicle. Registration fee is €50. Interested walking groups with more than 10 people must register for €10.

For detailed registration information, visit www. werbegemeinschaft-kl.de or call 0631-365-3426.

The 46th annual Ramstein Welfare Bazaar, created by the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club and sponsored by the 86th Services Squadron, will take place from Sept. 16 to 19 in Ramstein’s Hangar 1 and 2.

“The Ramstein Welfare Bazaar has become a time honored shopping tradition for those who reside in and around the KMC,” said Schrie Simpson, Ramstein Welfare Bazaar chairwoman. “This year, we will have over 130 vendors selling timeless, eye-catching, unique, and even some edible items from Europe and beyond —it’s a one-stop shopping extravaganza.”

This bazaar is truly a community event that ben-efits the community with proceeds from the weekend’s shopping redistributed throughout the KMC.

“The Ramstein Welfare Bazaar provides a unique opportunity to literally shop the world, but the real focus of this event is to raise money for the KMC,” said Tina Redanz, ROSC president. “Last year, as a result of sup-port from this incredible community, ROSC raised more than $273,000, 100 percent of which will be given back to our community during the 2010 welfare year. The ROSC is committed to community and it truly takes a community to produce such a fabulous bazaar.”

Ms. Simpson agreed that the bazaar is truly a community event.

“I would be remiss if I failed to mention the bazaar committee and the hundreds of volunteers, both active-duty and civilian, who generously donate their time to make this event possible,” she said. “The team effort and the knowledge that 100 percent of the proceeds from the bazaar are given back to the KMC make this both a rewarding and enjoyable experience.”

Shoppers this year will have a lot to look forward to with vendors from various countries selling items such as pottery, original artwork, home decor, linens,

toys, candies, cheeses, jewelry, clothing, furniture and antiques.

The bazaar will also feature a one of a kind food court. Base organizations sponsoring food booths will be selling all kinds of culinary delights, including favorites such as funnel cakes, bratwurst and burgers, paninis, tacos, fresh lemonade, smoothies and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.

The ROSC is also asking for volunteers to donate baked goods, to help in the business and finance offices, and to prepare and distribute snacks for vendors and volunteers in the hospitality suite. Volunteers working a four hour shift or donating 10 dozen baked goods qual-ify for VIP shopping from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday before the bazaar officially opens. Volunteers also have an opportunity to receive items donated by vendors through a special volunteer appreciation drawing.

“Volunteering is easy and fun. The bazaar requires more than 1,000 volunteers to make it a success and we rely on the community to help us out,” Ms. Redanz said.

There is still time to sign up to volunteer.Bazaar hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 16,

10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 17 and 18, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19. Thursday and Friday are stroller friendly days. A Kinder Korner in the Red Cross Tent will provide mothers and fathers with a place to take care of infants and toddlers. No pets are allowed on the bazaar grounds.

“In addition to raising money for the KMC, the bazaar is a toe-tingling shopping experience for all who attend. I simply cannot think of a better place to be Sept. 16 to 19 than the Ramstein Welfare Bazaar,” said Gina Van Orsdol, Ramstein Welfare Bazaar co-chair.

Tricare covers most inpatient and outpatient care that is medically necessary and considered prov-en. Equally important to primary care is preventive health care, which can help you live a healthier, longer life. As a Tricare beneficiary you are eligible for a range of clinical preventive services, including examinations, immunizations and periodic screen-ings based on your age, health history and family history.

The following screening examinations may be performed during either the periodic comprehensive health promotion examination or as part of other patient encounters. The intent is to maximize pre-ventive care:

Cancer screenings: Not all insurances pay for various preventive screenings. Tricare leads the way in providing a robust preventive health screen-ing opportunity for both Tricare Prime and Tricare Standard.

Female screenings include breast cancer screen-ings with physical exam and mammogram every 12 months for women 39 years and older — younger if you have a family history of breast cancer.

Male screenings include a testicular exam annu-ally starting from age 13 to 39 with history of crypt-orchidism, orchiopexy or testicular atrophy. Prostate cancer examinations are offered annually beginning at age 50.

Colorectal cancer exams for both men and women start at age 40 with physical exam and occult blood tests every year.

Sigmoidoscopy exams should be done every three to five years beginning at age 50 and colonos-copy every 10 years beginning at age 50.

Cardiovascular screenings: Everyone should get cholesterol screenings — lipid panel — at least every five years beginning at age 18. Blood pres-sure checks should be done at least every two years.

Vision screening: Active duty family Prime enrolled beneficiaries, 3 years and older, are autho-rized one comprehensive eye exam by a specialist every year. Infants are screened by their primary care provider at birth and at 6 months. Children who are Standard beneficiaries between 3 and 6 are authorized two comprehensive eye exams by a spe-cialist. Adult Standard beneficiaries are not covered.

Immunizations: Age appropriate vaccines (www.cdc.gov/vaccines), including newly recommended vaccines: • Shingles (Herpes Zoster) — beneficia-ries age 60 to 65. • Human papillomavirus (HPV) — girls ages 11 to 12; or catch up for girls 13 to 26.

This is not an all inclusive list of the clinical pre-ventive services offered by Tricare, so make sure you check with your primary care provider to assure you are up to date on the appropriate screenings for yourself and your family.

Send the KA your baby’s birth announcement: Include your baby’s full name, time and date of birth, hospital name, parents’ first and last names (ranks, if applicable), parents’ hometown and place where you are stationed. Send a high resolution (300 dpi) jpg photo to [email protected] and write “Birth announcement” in the subject line. Birth announcements are run the first Friday of the month on a space-available basis.

Story and photos by Yanir HillContributing writer

The genius coaching abilities of Marco Kurz and the talent, skill and resolution of the Red Devils shined through once again Aug. 27 as

they defeated the current German cham-pions, Bayern München, 2-0 at Fritz Walter Stadium in Kaiserslautern.

With the stadium filled to capacity, Red Devil fans gave a passionate, yet unwel-coming, reception to Bayern München as they stepped onto the pitch to start their warm-ups. That was the moment when continuous pounding of the München psyche began. During the match, the 1. FCK players exceeded all expectations, as did their loyal supporters.

The starting line-up for the Red Devils presented Srdjan Lakic and Adam Nemec as forwards; Ivo Ilicivec manned the left wing; Christian Tiffert and Jiri Bilek worked the midfield; Oliver Kirch guarded the right flank; Martin Amedick

(captain) and Rodnei as defense; Florian Dick and Leon Jessen as right and left wing defenders; Tobias Sippel as the goal keeper.

The star studded Bayern München was no match for the Red Devils. Thomas Müller (forward), Ivica Olic (forward), Miraslov Klose (forward), Franck Ribery (midfield), Mark Van Bommel (midfield), Bastian Schwensteiger, Diego Contento (defender), Holger Badstuber (defender), Daniel van Buyten (defender), Philipp Lahm (defender) and Hans-Jörge Butt (goalkeeper) made up the starting line-up for Bayern München.

Louis van Gaal, head coach for Bayern München, was clearly frustrated through-out the match. His key players were not performing as expected and the few opportunities they had to score were wasted.

Thomas Müller had a perfect opportu-nity to score but missed by mere inches. Moments later, Ilicevic took control of the ball and swept his way through to

Ramstein takes all-Europe

softball honorsThe Ramstein Ram’s Varsity Softball Club dom-

inated the 2010 U.S. Forces-Europe slow-pitch softball tournament Aug. 18 to 22 in Grafenwöhr, Germany. The men’s team took top honors among 11 U.S. military teams from throughout Europe after defeating Lakenheath 16-6 in the champion-ship game.

But winning isn’t anything new to the Ramstein team, said head coach Master Sgt. Jason Acre, who touted the team’s impeccable stats over the last year.

“Our record for this season is 68-3 and 9-for-10 in tournaments in Europe,” Sergeant Acre said, “Over the years, Ramstein has had many great teams in various sports and has always had a tradition of win-ning.”

Individual honors went to the following Ramstein members: MVP, Staff Sgt. Travis Shoffner; All-tournament selections, Master Sergeants Kurt Tom, Mark Noll and Shane Byrd, and Staff Sergeants Justin James and Travis Shoffner.

This event marked the last official tournament of the year for the team, however they are planning a fall softball tournament fundraiser Oct. 15 to 17 to honor a former Ram’s member who recently died.

score the first goal. As the crowd roared and the ball went back into play, Lakic took possession of the ball and scored again, within one minute of Ilicevik’s goal. The cheer-ing of the fans was out of control.

Bayern München’s defeat was clear at that moment. The lead estab-lished by the Red Devils and the psychological torment the oppo-nents were subjected to by the crowd proved to be a lethal combination for Bayern München.

Not content with their lead, the Red Devils not only focused on defending their goal but continu-ously attacked the opponent’s zone.

When the match was called, the Red Devils embraced each other as the crowd cheered them on. They ran their victory lap and took a few moments to salute and thank their loyal followers.

The team has proven to be a force to reckon with in the first Bundesliga. Kurz’ foresight and skill are the perfect tools to bring this team to glory in the first Bundesliga.

On Sept. 12, the Red Devils will face FSV Mainz 05 at 3:30 p.m. in Mainz.
