3RAMSEY COUNTY FAIR

Every family has its own traditions.Traditions for celebrating holidays,

birthdays and special events.County fairs have been a longstandingtradition in the community as well. Backin the days when towns were not very

large, county fairs emerged. It was a time,after a long season of hard work, for thetowns to gather and celebrate with theirneighbors.

Over time county fairs have evolved,adapting to the changing communitiesand interests. The Ramsey County Fair,celebrating its 103rd year, has had itschanges, too, but also realizes the valueof traditions and has striven to keep asmany of them as possible for families topass along to future generations.

While many county fairs have hadto start charging a fee for admission,Ramsey County remains one of the fewfree-admission fairs, charging only a $3parking fee (for vehicles parked in the

lot). The Ramsey County Fair has alsostriven to keep reasonably priced foodvendors and amusement rides each year,making it an affordable day for a familyto come and celebrate with their neigh-

bors.

There is something for everyone at thefair! Music, entertainment, food, rides,4H displays, exhibits of food, art andcrafts are all back for 2016, along withthe popular Mitchell Showboat Mario-nettes. This year the fair begins at 5 p.m.Wednesday, July 13, and closes at 9:30

p.m. Sunday, July 17. The fairground islocated in Maplewood at the intersectionof White Bear and Frost avenues, nearAldrich Arena.

You can be part of the fair as well.Maybe you have a family recipe that you

love to make or a work of art, whether

its something you have sewn, quiltedknitted or painted.

The fair competitions are open toeveryone, and you just might win thatprestigious county fair blue ribbon!

Do you have a special talent? If you do,then be sure to enter the Ramsey CountyFairs amateur talent contest. Winnersget to move on to the Minnesota StateFair competition later this summer.

The 103rd Annual Ramsey CountyFair talent contest is now taking applica-tions to compete in this years amateurtalent show on Sunday, July 17, at 5:30p.m.

Winners of each category will go on torepresent Ramsey County at the Minne-sota State Fair in late August.

The competition categories are: pre-teen for ages 12 and younger; teen forages 13 through 18, and open class forall ages.

Cash prizes will be awarded in eachcategory as follows: first place $65; sec-ond place $45, and third place $25. Ofcourse, it wouldnt be a county fair with-out the blue ribbons, too.

Registrations must be received beforethe deadline of Saturday, July 16, at 2p.m. (no exceptions). The entry fee of$10 must accompany the registrationform.

Any clown will tell you that his orher favorite part of clowning is try-ing to make people laugh. But what anoutsider may be surprised by is thatfor those who are clowns, clowning isabout more than just making peoplesmile; its an extension of their person-alities.

I probably went through several per-sonas before I found the right one, says

Judy Stitches Reed, current president

of the Powder Puff Clown Club.Reeds clown name, Stitches, is a mon-iker her husband helped her pick out

based off her sewing, embroidery andcross-stitching hobbies.

She says theres more personalitywhen you choose your name.

Reed has been clowning since 2004and this is her third year being presidentfor the 49-year-old club.

Robert Sorteberg, president of the St.Paul Clown Club, which was established

in 1946 for the St. Paul Winter Carnival,usually goes by Grandpa Goofy, as he

spends a lot of time with his 14 grand-children.

Judy Register, a member of the 3MClown Club, goes by the name My

Stars, which is based off a saying hermother used often when Register was a

child.

Clowning over the yearsIts family; I call them my broth-

ers and sisters in clowning, DorothyGifon Fabian says.

Fabian has been in the Powder PuffClown Club for 42 years and is the oldestmember at age 84.

I got in it because I went into postpar-tum depression after my last baby was

born back in the 1960s, Fabian says.Sorteberg joined the St. Paul Clown

Club in 2000 to help drive the clubstruck in the parades after the previoustruck driver passed away. He chuckles as

he recalls he had no intentions of becom-ing a clown or even dressing up.

Sorteberg told the members at the time,I can do that OK, but I dont think Ill

be a clown.Finally, one day the members of the St.

Paul Clown Club brought a suit over andtold him he would be a clown. He has

been one ever since.All three clown clubs say they have

noticed a change in the behavior of kidsover the years.

Sorteberg says they have to be more cautious now

about approaching children and adults because of theirfears of clowns.

The kids today are just different, Fabian says,explaining youngsters are no longer interested in thestickers or trinkets that the clowns used to give away.She says some parades also ask participants not tothrow candy due to sanitary concerns.

The clubs have experienced a significant drop inmembership over the past 10 years as longtime mem-

bers age and pass away. At the same time, theyve strug-gled to find young people interested in becoming clownsand willing to appear in parades and special events.

Its hard to find people to keep up with that [clown-ing], Sorteberg says.

Clowns in actionThe Powder Puff Clown Club, the 3M Clown Club

and the St. Paul Clown Club make multiple appearanceseach parade season. The clubs have made past appear-ances in the White Bear Avenue parade, the annualkickoff for the Ramsey County Fair.

Sorteberg says at one point this season the St. PaulClown Club participated in eight parades in 10 days.

Reed, president of the Powder Puff Clown Club, says

it takes a couple of hours to put the clown makeup onand the costumes. Then there is the time spent liningup for the parades and the actual parades themselves,all of it adding up to a whole day spent for what seems

like a short event.Reed says the time commitment is one of the biggest

hurdles for getting younger members to join.While many clubs require members to be 18 years or

older, the 3M Clown Club includes younger members.Register says three of her grandchildren, ages 19, 13and 9, clown with her.

People love the little ones, Register says, adding

that she started some of her grandkids when they werejust 4 years old.

Most of the members join the clubs as a retirementhobby.

Types of clownsReed says that it took over a year and a half before

she found the right clown and costume for her per-sonality.

She explains there are four types of clowns: white-face, where the face is painted white with color aroundthe eyes and mouth; Auguste, where the face is painted

with a pink base and there is white and color aroundthe eyes and mouth; hobo, where the face is paintedwith a pink base, there is color around the mouth andusually a painted on beard; and character, where theclown chooses a character to dress up as, such as apirate or Tinker Bell.

In addition to choosing a type of clown, participantsthen can choose a name or multiple names to reflect thepersonality of their clown character. They also createtheir own costumes.

Cathi Taylor, 67, from West St. Paul and a member ofthe Powder Puff Clown Club, says that her three clown

characters, Violet, Daisy and Candy, are based off differ-ent parts of her personality and her life.

Violet is an absentminded Flower Child, as Taylorgrew up during the 1960s. She notes that Violet does

not portray the drug use during the 1960s, as it wouldnot be appropriate for children.Daisy is outgoing and happy, which Taylor describes

as being her personality now but it wasnt my person-ality as a child. As I grew up and got a little bit older Istarted being more of what Daisy is like. Daisy is kindof my alter ego.

Taylor describes Candy through her outfit, whichconsists of red and white striped overalls.

Clowning for the clowns sakeSorteberg says he keeps clowning in order to have

something different in life instead of doing the samething all the time.

Its meeting people, telling stories, trying to makepeople laugh, he says, adding that most of the time,

kids get a bang out of it.For me it means staying active and helping...by put-

ting a smile on peoples faces, Register says.But it isnt just about making others happy, theres a

sense of camaraderie between clowns.Theres a lot of very deep friendships and we do

things other than clowning, like going out to lunch, orgoing to events together or the movies or whatever,Taylor says.

He explains that the Powder Puff Clown Clubs pastpresident Mark Peterson had a suicide within his fam-ily and now many of our clowns participate in [Stomp

Out Suicide charity walk] ... not only for SOS, but forour love and respect for the Petersons.

Most of the members describe their clowning familyas a support system.

Its more like family; we care very much about eachother, and thats a very nice thing. We are always amongfriends Taylor says.

When reflecting on her time in the Powder PuffClown Club, Fabian says, Everyone you meet in your

life, they are a special gift.Sorteberg says, for club members, clowning is some-

thing bright in their life, something different.

The Powder Puff Clown Club meets at theGalilee Lutheran Church, 145 N. McCarronsBlvd., in Roseville on the first Thursday of eachmonth.

The St. Paul Clown Club also meets at theGalilee Lutheran Church, but on the secondThursday of each month.

The 3M Clown Club, is for current and retired3M employees and their immediate families.They meet on the second Wednesday of eachmonth at the 3M Center. The meeting is held in

building 222 and attendees must be escorted tothe meeting at building 224.

All three clown clubs have made past appear-ances in the White Bear Avenue parade, theannual kickoff for the Ramsey County Fair.The parade will take place July 13, with the

lineup beginning at 6 p.m. and the parade start-ing at 7 p.m. The parade travels from Ivy Streetnorth to Aldrich Arena in Maplewood.
