2013 AIA RHODE ISLAND HONOR AWARD RECIPIENT
As the lead designer working directly under the Principal-in-Charge, I was responsible for the detailing and design exploration of the exterior envelope systems, exterior envelope performance & analysis, detail-ing of interior public spaces, coordination of a complex system of underground cam-pus utilities, including waterproofing and drainage for severe hydrostatic conditions, resolving challenging existing building con-ditions, as well as overseeing and manag-ing the construction documentation and construction administration team. Techni-cal coordination expertise is evident in the successful, built execution of the design intent while upholding design aesthetic with highest regard. Design authorship is exhibited in the sophistication of the ex-terior envelope design, and elegance in the detailing of the interior public spaces.
Self-initiated coordination and collabo-ration with Odeh Engineers (Structural) resulted in a simplification of structural framing saving approximately $1/2 mil-lion on a $45 million dollar project. Similar attention to coordination with Vanderweil Engineers (MEP/FP) resulted in achieving the design as intended while simultane-ously accommodating the complexity of research laboratory mechanical require-ments. Integration w Civil & Landscape consultants resulted in a well-orchestrat-ed building solution in harmony with its surroundings and environmental require-ments.

South Facade Performance
Custom sunshade design optimizes solar angles for summer & winter performance, as well as maximiz-ing reflected daylight in the clerestory window lites.
Extended window shrouds at the perimeter of the curtainwall system assist with reducing solar heat gain by providing additional shading surface.

Interior Guardrail Details
The interior communicating stairs conceal a complex structural support system allowing no visible columns for a 16’ rise.
The standing seam zinc siding has a playful relationship with the window spacing. The detailing was particularly challenging as partial seam panels needed to address head jamb and sill simultaneously while allowing a verti-cal seam to pass by the window opening.

2012 AIA UPJOHN GRANTRESEARCH INITIATIVE
Perimeter wood slat shrouds elegantly con-ceal coplanar window frames, an immense concrete shear wall system on each side of the public space, in addition to a steel transfer girder system overhead. In unison, these support a structural tension hanger system which affords each two-storey vol-ume a seemingly floating expanse of wood windows, as well as expansive outlooks to the courtyard beyond. While the east face of the shear walls provide niches for dis-play cabinets exhibiting historical artifacts of the pharmacological practice, the west face of each shear wall is transformed into a living “green wall,” connecting the interior space to the exterior and nearby Medicinal Garden, which supports the College of Phar-macy’s mission of nature-inspired medicinal research.

Coming in halfway through the design phase, my responsibility was to take leadership on somewhat unresolved areas of the project, namely the pow-er plant addition and new greenhouse for Bridgewater’s New Science Center. This involved identifying programming requirements, design studies to CD level documentation for both facili-ties, including coordination with all relevant trades.

Northeastern University, challenged with meeting the bud-get of their new Integrated Science Center, desired to intro-duce high quality design through even the most utilitarian of spaces. Here, my contribution was designing a techni-cally sophisticated yet elegant egress stair, comprised of a central painted steel ribbon, using standard materials with an eye towards the most cost effective design pos-sible while still maintaining the integrity of the design. The result is a stair which is minimalist by only using what is absolutely essential to support the stair’s structure.
Additional coordination ensured this egress stair met stringent requirements for high-rise buildings with all me-chanical systems and large structural members completely concealed from view.

In addition to leading studies of the exte-rior facade development, I concentrated on the design and daylight analysis of a space within an existing two story build-ing, which was to be structurally modified to allow for an open, two-storey computer lab. This allowed daylight to permeate in a building with too large of a footprint and to be soon encompassed by new construc-tion.
