    Poster analysis

The Ramones: Rocket to Russia poster was

released on the 4thof November 1977. This

poster is extremely iconic due to the bold

colours and the very punk styles that are

shown in the poster. The text for the poster is

    very bold and masculine

    with capitals throughout.

    The text also has no

    ascenders or desenders

    and there is no kerning

    between letters; possibly

    uggesting that they are a

    close knit band. The text

    s staying between the

base line and the text line.

    ts very square and

    compact. This is possibly

    because there targeting a

    masculine audience.

    Additionally, the text

    colour is pink this creates

    a juxtapositioning

    between the pink and

    black. This is because the

    pink would connote

    omance and charm.

    Whereas, the black and

    white shot of the band

    would connote danger

    and mystery.

The central image is the bandstaring at you this is direct

    address. Furthermore, they

are in black and white; there

    faces are covered. This would

    suggest that the band is

    mysterious and possibly

    powerful. This is the

    hermeneutic code. This is

    because its unexplained: why

are they in black and why dothey look so unhappy? They

are possibly in black due to the

    genre of their music; punk.

    They are wearing ripped jeans,

    leather jackets, scrappy pumps

and one is wearing sun glasses

    when its evidently not that

sunny. This is because they are

trying to look cool for the fans.

However, they are possibleshowing there rebellious side.

    The users and gratifications

    theory would suggest that this

    will cause discussion between

    people as they will challenge

    and form opinions. This will

    increase the buzz and

    therefore the amount of

    albums sold. This would

appeal to teenagers as theyare often trying to be

    rebellious so they will idolise

    there style and therefore

spread the punk style. The text Rocket to Russia would possibly show their

political meanings. This is due to the rising tension

between the Americans and the Russians at the time

(just before the cold war). Additionally, it could be a

reference to the race to the moon between Russia and

America. However, I believe that its a reference to

Russia political policies at the time of 1977. Because

their views were so controversial, this would be a

cultural code. This is because as they are sharing their

punk views and sharing their culture. This would once

again influence the youth who saw them as role models.

This poster would have been shown at venues and

    record shops.

The band is shown to be leaning or standing near a

doorway. This could be a hermeneutic code; it is a

mystery as to the reason for standing in the doorway.

Additionally, they could be acting in a rebellious way

to try and attract attention and get in the news. As

bad news can often lead to good news for the band as

    they will receive more publicity.
