Editorial Ralph Stock 70th Birthday On the 21st of March, Ralph Stock, one of the stalwarts of the Chromatographia editorial team, wilt reach the biblical age of three score years and ten. Since the retire- ment of Professor Leslie Ettre, Ralph is the longest serv- ing member of the editorial team, having been ap- pointed in January 1972 to replace Dr. David Deans a founding editor of the journal. A brief biography of Ralph was given in Chromato- graphia 21, 135 (1986) on the occasion of his 60th birthday. In 1985 he retired from the post of Dean of Science and Head of the Department of Chemistry and l~hysics at Nottingham Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University). On retirement from Nottingham he took up the post of Professor of Inorganic and Analyti- cal Chemistry and Head of the Department of Chemistry at the new Sultan Qaboos University in Oman which opened its doors to the first students in 1986. Ralph retired for the second time in 1990, having been privileged to be involved in the enjoyable and stimulating experience of participating in the founda- tion of the first, and so far the only, university in Oman. One of the most pleasant and rewarding aspects of his time in Oman was the great eagerness of the students, both male and female, to study and do well in their exams. Although segregated socially, male and female students are taught in mixed classes unlike their counterparts in neighbouring states. This is a brave ex- periment on the part of the Sultan and, in Ralph's view, a successful one. Ralph remains one of the Technical Editors of Chroma- tographia and although retired from teaching he was honoured with the title of Emeritus Professor of Nottin- gham Trent University in 1990. When time permits he in- dulges in his hobbies of gardening, bird watching and photography (a convenient combination since on oc- casion they can become complementary occupations). As Ralph's birthday approaches we wish him well on his journey towards the millennium and the next biblical landmark of fourscore years. i E. R. Ralph Stock 70th Birthday

On the 21st of March, Ralph Stock, one of the stalwarts of the Chromatographia editorial team, wilt reach the biblical age of three score years and ten.

As Ralph's birthday approaches we wish him well on his journey towards the millennium and the next biblical landmark of fourscore years.
