20 LIGHT AVIATION | JULY 2014 RALLY UPDATE LAA SYWELL RALLY UPDATE – 29-31 AUGUST Brian Hope says it’s time to make a date in your diary and start to prepare for the biggest event of the year. B elieve it or not it is now less than two months before the annual Rally – I hope you are looking forward to it as much as I am! LAA Sywell always attracts some very interesting and often unique aeroplanes. Who can fail to remember 2011 when Tony Smith brought the Alex Henshaw Mew Gull in from Breighton to stand alongside Steve Noujaim’s Van’s RV-7 in which, just a day or two before, he had landed at Southend to break the London/Cape Town/London record that had stood to the Mew Gull for 70 years? Or last year when Dan Griffith brought in Richard Seeley’s simply stunning Travelair Mystery Ship, which then stood on the apron alongside Tony Whitehouse’s recently flown Morane 317 parasol restoration and the almost unbelievable French-built, three- quarter scale DH Mosquito replica? Without a doubt the Rally has always been a magnet for owners and their lovingly built or restored aircraft and, given a fair wind, this year's event will also see some extraordinary aircraft gracing Sywell’s lush grass. But it’s not all about the unique and the show winners; with around 1,000 aircraft attending, the diversity of aircraft is greater than at any other event in the UK – in fact, in most of Europe. Whatever your particular aviation appetite it will almost certainly be satisfied at Sywell. You can help promote the Rally by downloading the Rally Poster from the LAA Home page, printing it off and pinning it up at your local airfield or strip – the splendid artwork is also printed for you opposite. Thank you for your support. HOMEBUILDERS AND FLEA MARKET Don’t forget to bring your unwanted parts to the Rally to sell in the flea market, which once again will be sharing the Homebuilder Centre with all manner of part-built aeroplanes and their owners, who will be more than happy to explain their building techniques. This year we are planning a couple of competitions in the Homebuilder Centre to stir the grey cells. The first is an information treasure hunt amongst the exhibitors within the homebuilder marquee. The second will be in two parts - both simple CG calculations and orchestrated by Dr Martin Kellett on the C of G stand. First you must work out the empty aircraft mass and CG position given the scales and a tape measure. And second work out a couple of loading conditions for a fictitious aircraft to establish if the aircraft is in limits or not. Prizes will be awarded daily for each competition. The Homebuilder Centre will this year be sponsored by Light Aero Spares, one of the leading aircraft parts suppliers in the UK. TROPHIES AND AWARDS A number of prestigious trophies and awards are presented at the Rally, many celebrating the superbly built and restored aircraft that attend. If you would like to enter your aircraft for judging you can do so prior to the event or when you arrive. Full details of the categories and how to enter can be found on the Rally pages of the LAA website. RALLY EXHIBITION The Rally exhibition hosts manufacturers and suppliers of everything from a complete aircraft to a nut and bolt, pilot supplies, books, charts, avionics – you name it and you’ll probably find it here. There is still space to book, either inside one of the marquees or out on the open area; call Penny Sharpe at the office on 01280 846786, email penny.sharpe@laa. uk.com or check the exhibitor section of the LAA website Rally pages. RALLY VOLUNTEERS Of course an event the size of the Rally does not run itself and we are seeking a few volunteers to help set up, run and break down the show. This year we will be coordinating volunteers via the office so if you are able to help in any way please contact Penny via email at penny.sharpe@ laa.uk.com and let her know which days and times you can spare. Our main requirements are for help during set up on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 August, and break down on the afternoon/ early evening of Sunday 31 August. During the event we would also appreciate volunteers to do a stint in the car park with our rather ‘off the wall’ car parking team – certainly more fun than you could ever imagine it might be! CAMPING AND HOTELS The campsite, which has available for use hot showers, water and toilets, will be open from Thursday 28 August until Monday morning 1 September. The charge per unit (a tent, caravan or motor caravan) is £30 for any length of stay during that period. A discounted fee of £20 is available if booked online at the LAA Shop on www.laa.uk.com. The last date pre-booking is available is Friday 22 August as the office has to mail out your campsite pass. There are also numerous hotels in the Northampton area and there is a comprehensive list on the LAA website Rally pages. OPENING TIMES Please note that this year the event opens slightly later than in the past. Times for each of the days are: l Friday: 9.30am to 5pm l Saturday: 9.30am to 5pm l Sunday: 9.30am to 4pm ADMISSION CHARGES l Members of LAA, BMAA and BRA: £5 covers all three days and airside access. Please ensure you bring your current membership card as there is no facility to check whether you are a member at the pay desk. l Non-members: £10 covers access to the exhibition and non-airside areas for all three days. l Non-member airside access: £10 per day. l Accompanied children under 16: Free. l Arrivals by air: £10 landing fee covers each arrival day. If you come one day and stay the weekend you will pay just £10; if you come and go each day you will be charged a landing fee for each day. Local flights will not incur a landing fee. The landing fee includes admission for the pilot and passengers. Why not bring a buddy and show him or her what the LAA is all about? You are welcome to camp beside your aircraft (no charge) and use the facilities on the dedicated campsite. FLYING IN The LAA and Sywell Aerodrome wish to encourage pilots to fly into the LAA Sywell Rally but, as you can imagine, with perhaps over 1,000 aircraft arrivals over the three days of the event, the airspace can become very busy. Such densities of traffic require strictly adhered to arrival and circuit procedures to maintain safe operation. You must book a landing slot on the Sywell website at www.sywellaerodrome. co.uk/bookings.php and download the Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) M 61/2014, which outlines the arrival and departure procedures. They are not difficult but you must read, understand and fly these procedures for your and everybody else’s safety. You cannot simply call up from five miles out and ask for joining instructions! The AIC is also available from the LAA website www.laa.uk.com and the AIS website at www.ais.org.uk
