Laughter is the Best MedicineDr. Avril StauntonSr. Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist has more than 25 years of experience in general and high-risk obstetrics, miscarriage, recurrent abortion, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and adult and menopausal problems.

Laughter breaks the ice! I just experienced a wonderful delivery, where first time parents arrived nervously in the delivery room, dripping liquor, full of worries, uncertainties and anxiety. Slowly we built up a rapport which included all three of us laughing over the combined experiences. The rugby playing father who had followed his son’s progress anxiously throughout the pregnancy and whom I now had to inform that the shape of the baby’s head more resembled a football than a rugger ball and the delivery might be a little difficult for his wife responded with “it doesn’t matter, the soccer players earn more than the rugger blokes anyway”, reducing his wife and me to fits of laughter. She proceeded to deliver without analgesia, managing to crack jokes although fully dilated despite her original intention of having an epidural. This can be explained by the high endorphin levels produced by the pain of labour and perhaps also partly, the laughter. Humour has been used increasingly in healing. Groucho Marx said “a clown is like an aspirin, only he works twice as fast.”

As a part of our ongoing community outreach programmes, •RAK Heart Care Clinic has been launched for the month of March 2010. The clinic is open to general public above 30 years of age. As a part of this month-long clinic, free consultations and free ECGs are offered. In addition to these, all cardiac investigations and health check-ups are offered at a 30% discount.

Health Check-Up CampIn celebration of International Women’s Day, RAK Hospital is •organising a free health camp, open to all women, at Safeer Mall, Ras Al Khaimah. Free blood pressure checks and blood sugar checks will be provided to all women. In addition to these, all participating women will get a 30% discount on all RAK Health Check-Ups.
