Trafford Conservatives keeppolitics out of the Deficit ReductionSpending Measures.
The present financial situation being faced by the country and consequently by councils too isserious enough without using the issue for political point scoring.
As councils around the country announce their plans for dealing with the reductions in fundingapplied by the coalition government to help reduce the national deficit, it is apparent which onesare playing politics with their responses. Labour councils up and down the country have beenaxing front line services and announcing substantial job losses. Trafford, which has been underConservative control since 2004, has had the same scale of funding reductions as most of thesecouncils but has consciously taken a practical approach which protects important services as faras possible. This does not mean that Trafford comes through unscathed. Inevitably, with thisscale of funding reduction, some jobs will be going and trimming of some services will happenbut all influenced by the consultations with Trafford’s residents. However, there will be no‘politicking’ with people’s livelihoods as some neighbouring councils have chosen to do. Pressreleases of service closures and job losses made before the staff that are affected have beeninformed is below the standard expected from a local authority. There is even the possibility that
these ways of working may impact on some Trafford residents working for such councils.Trafford Council has approved a balanced budget for the 2011-2012 financial year withreasonable debate in the Council Chamber and sensitivity towards Trafford’s residents and staff.

No increase inCouncil Tax is
right for Traffordresidents
says Mike Whetton Ashton upon Mersey councillor, MikeWhetton welcomes the freezing in therate of Council Tax. “Trafford residentspay one of the lowest Council Taxesand certainly the lowest in Greater Manchester. However thatcertainly doesn’t mean that an increase ought to be applied. The coalition government is encouraging a standstill in the taxfor this year with incentives and so it should. There areenough prices rising due to market forces and, yes, there hasbeen the increase in VAT too. That is enough for everyone totolerate at this time of economic hardship. Under Conservative
control Trafford Council has budgeted for the nil increase inCouncil Tax at the same time as coping with the substantialreduction in government grant. Managing the various councilservices with less money to fund them has presented manychallenges, some of them ongoing, but the priorities that thepublic have voiced in the various consultations have been takeninto consideration.”
