As councils around the country announce their plans for dealing with the reductions in funding applied by the coalition government to help reduce the national deficit, it is apparent which ones are playing politics with their responses. Labour councils up and down the country have been axing front line services and announcing substantial job losses. Trafford, which has been under Conservative control since 2004, has had the same scale of funding reductions as most of these councils but has consciously taken a practical approach which protects important services as far as possible. This does not mean that Trafford comes through unscathed. Inevitably, with this scale of funding reduction, some jobs will be going and trimming of some services will happen but all influenced by the consultations with Trafford’s residents. However, there will be no ‘politicking’ with people’s livelihoods as some neighbouring councils have chosen to do. Press releases of service closures and job losses made before the staff that are affected have been informed is below the standard expected from a local authority.
