NOTES FROM THE LOFT• What is the tune for the Mass parts we’re singing this summer?

The Holy, Memorial Acclamation (When we eat…), and Amen are based on the hymn tune called LAND OF REST. It is a folk tune whose melody was published in a famous 1844 American hymnal entitled The Sacred Harp. In that hymnal, the first line of its hymn text was “O land of rest!” – hence the origin of the tune name. The Mass parts that we are singing were arranged by Catholic composer Richard Proulx. For more information on the hymn tune, visit http://www.hymnary.org/tune/land_of_rest_american.

COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA ~ AUGUST 7Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. In Peru, the 14 villages of Chazuta, in Moyobamba, are all located away from the city center, with the most remote location only accessible by boat. The faithful in these communities do not have access to catechetical formation, and members often feel separated from the life of the universal Church. Through a grant from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, the religious congregation of the Missionaries of Jesus was able to provide faith formation, spiritual retreats, and workshops to nearly 250 people. Upon completion, participants were better equipped to help others deepen their faith and answer questions. The program also renewed their sense of commitment to their parishes and created stronger bonds within their own families. Through this program, members of the Chazuta villages felt the love and support of the universal Church. Please support programs like these and give generously in next week’s collection. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

ROSARIES ~ FROM ST. EDWARD TO INDIARecently, the St. Edward Rosary Makers have sent two shipments of rosaries to the Bishop of the Kohima District, pictured above, in Nagalano India. What better way to spread this Marian devotion!

About every-other month, a box is sent out of the country. Many thanks to the Women of St. Edward for paying the postage!

The Rosary Makers will resume their weekly rosary making sessions on September 7th in the Lounge at 9:30 a.m. They also welcome parishioners who prefer to make rosaries at home. For more information, contact Janine Kozlowski at 740-587-3524.

WE ARE ALL MEMBERS OF THE BODY OF CHRIST

Being part of the Catholic community has many advantages. We are all members of the Body of Christ, which means we never go through anything alone!

It is obvious by the many prayer chains that exist, the Prayers of the Faithful every Sunday, the many different novenas and the list could go on. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your many prayers, cards and support. It has been a real source of strength and comfort as I continue to heal. I am slowly regaining my strength and healing. I look forward to the time when I will be restored to the fullness of my priestly ministry. Again, thank you. – Fr. Mike Gribble

MERCY NOW ~ MERCY AS AN ACT OF DISCIPLESHIPMercy Mantra“If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15

Mercy in MarriageIt may sound pithy, but keep trying. Marriage is for life. Mercy in marriage doesn’t always have to be about forgiving a wrong. Sometimes it’s simply about trying again. Getting up the next day and smiling. Telling your spouse “thank you” or letting them teach you something new. My husband says that the best way to grow is to “do something you’ve said you’d never do.” He said he’d never get a dog…we now have a rescued 50lb. Australian Shepherd mix who has made Kevin his best friend. He has taught him loyalty and joy. Keep trying, try something new, let yourself be vulnerable. Marriage is for life.

Mercy for MeHow often do you acknowledge, claim and proclaim that Jesus Christ has saved you? Sharing our experience of receiving the mercy of the Cross is our first job. Consider forming what I call your “elevator story”. You get on the elevator with another person who happens to see a Cross on your person and they ask, “Why are you a Christian?” and you have until they reach their floor to tell them. What will you say?Leisa Anslinger © Catholic Life and Faith www.CatholicLifeandFaith.net

This week, read the Catechism paragraphs 2207-2213 entitled, “The Family and Society.” 2207 – The family is the original cell of social life. Authority, stability, and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for freedom, security, and fraternity within society. Family life is an imitation into life in society. 2208 – The family should live in such a way that its members learn to care and take responsibility for the young, the old, the sick, the handicapped and the poor. 2209 – The family must be helped and defended by appropriate social measures. 2210 – The importance of the family for the life and wellbeing of society entails a particular responsibility for society to support and strengthen marriage and the family. 2211 – The political community has a duty to honor the family; to assist it. 2212 – The Fourth Commandment illuminates other relationships in society. 2213 – Human communities are made up of persons. Right relations between employers and employees, between those who govern and citizens, presuppose a natural good will in keeping with the dignity of human persons concerned for justice and fraternity.

BETHESDA POST-ABORTION HEALING MINISTRYSummer is here. We slow down our pace a bit to reflect on the mystery of Jesus and his wondrous gifts. If you have experienced abortion in your life and that memory is keeping you from enjoying the fruits of summer, perhaps it is time to open your spirit to the peace only Jesus can give you. We are a group of mothers and fathers who have suffered the experience of abortion. We gather twice a month to share, heal and grow. “We’ve been there. We understand. We invite you to join us.” Bethesda Healing Ministry confidential lines are available to you, please call us at 614-309-2651 or 614-309-0157 or visit our website at bethesdahealing.org. SPONSOR OF THE WEEK:

In the Parable of the Rich Fool, Jesus said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Lk 12:15). Most of the Parables shared by the Lord in Holy Scripture address the issue of possessions and how we treat them, how we use them as a measurement of success. Consistently, those who write about the challenges we face in living lives of stewardship point to this same problem. Jesus certainly understood it.

Christ was living in a society that was very different from that we experience today, but that basic difficulty existed then, as it does now. The problem is not that possessions exist, but that they can become the dominant motivation in our lives and how we live them.

The Lord cautions us, as He does in the Parable of the Rich Fool from today’s Gospel, that storing up treasure and possessions means that we may be wealthy in the eyes of society, but not in “what matters to God.” This is one of our ongoing stumbling blocks to being stewards living a Christian life.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis speaks often about this same problem. In a recent homily he said, “True joy does not come from things or from possessing. It is born from the relationship with others; it is born from feeling accepted, understood, and loved, and from accepting, understanding, and loving. It is saying to one another, ‘You are important to me,’ not ‘What you have is important to me.’ Possessions are nothing but an illusion.” www.catholicsteward.com

“What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3)

“Acquire the habit of speaking to God as if you were alone with Him, familiarly and with confidence and love, as to the dearest and most loving of friends. Speak to Him often of your business, your plans, your troubles, your fears — of everything that concerns you. Converse with Him confidently and frankly; for God is not wont to speak to a soul that does not speak to Him.” —SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGUORI

Monday, August 1 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Holy Gospel: Matthew 14:22-36 Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side of the sea, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed.

Meditation: This dramatic incident on the sea of Galilee revealed Peter's character rather vividly. Here we see Peter's impulsivity — his tendency to act without thinking of what he was doing. He often failed and came to grief as a result of his impulsiveness. In contrast, Jesus always bade his disciples to see how difficult it was to follow him before they set out on the way he taught them. A great deal of failure in the Christian life is due to acting on impulse, feelings and emotions without counting the cost. Peter, fortunately in the moment of his failure clutched at Jesus and held him firmly. Every time Peter fell, he rose again. His failures only made him love the Lord more deeply and trust him more intently. The Lord keeps watch over us at all times, and especially in our moments of temptation and difficulty.

Prayer: O God, who constantly raise up in your Church new examples of virtue, grant that we may follow so closely in the footsteps of the Bishop Saint Alphonsus in his zeal for souls as to attain the same rewards that are his in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Does the Lord seem distant when trials or adversity come your way? Jesus assures us that we have no need of fear if we trust in Him and in his great love for us. When calamities or trials threaten to overwhelm you, do you respond with faith and hope in God's love, and his care and presence with you? If not, you should! True peace and divine direction can be ours only if we turn to Christ.

Tuesday, August 2 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Priest; the “Apostle of the Eucharist”

Holy Gospel: Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14 Some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands when they eat a meal.” He summoned the crowd and said to them, “Hear and understand. It is not what enters one’s mouth that defiles the man; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one.” Then his disciples

Page 9: Raise our Hearts & Prayers to God...2016/07/31  · JULY 31, 2016 – YEAR C PRELUDE INTRODUCTORY RITES ENTRANCE: Come Now, Almighty King (#715) GLORIA: A New Mass for Congregations

approached and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?” He said in reply, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

Meditation: Which is more important to God – clean hands or a clean mind and a claan heart? The Scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus' disciples of breaking their ritual traditions. They were concerned with avoiding ritual defilement, some no doubt out of fear of God, and others out of fear of pleasing other people. Jesus points his listeners to the source of true defilement – evil desires which come from inside a person's innermost being. Sin does not just happen or force itself upon us. It first springs from the innermost recesses of our thoughts and intentions, from the secret desires which only the individual soul can conceive. God in his mercy sent his Son Jesus Christ to free us from our sinful cravings and burden of guilt, and to restore us to wholeness of life and goodness. But to receive his mercy and healing, we must admit our faults and ask for his forgiveness. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9). When Cain was jealous of his brother, Abel, God warned him to guard his heart: “Sin is couching at the door; it's desire is for you, but you must master it” (Genesis 4:7). Do you allow any sinful desires to couch at your door? We do not need to entertain or succumb to sinful desires or thoughts, but instead, through the grace of God, turn away from sinful thoughts and actions.

Prayer: O God, who adorned Saint Peter Julian Eymard with a wonderful love for the sacred mysteries of the Body and Blood of your Son, graciously grant that we, too, may be worthy to receive the delights he drew from this divine banquet. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Only God can change our hearts and make them clean and whole through the power of the Holy Spirit. Like a physician who probes the wound before treating it, God through his Word and Spirit first brings to light our sinful condition that we may recognize sin for what it is and call upon God's mercy and pardon. The Lord is every ready to change and purify our hearts through his Holy Spirit who dwells within us. His power and grace enables us to choose what is good and to reject what is evil. Are you open to this change of heart? Do you believe in the power of God's love to change and transform your heart?

Wednesday, August 3 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Holy Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 At that time Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

Meditation: There have been times in each of our lives when we have felt “put-off” by the Lord. A Gentile woman puts Jesus on the spot by pleading for his help. At first Jesus seemed to pay no attention to her, and this made his disciples feel embarrassed. Jesus does this to test the woman to awaken faith in her. What did Jesus mean by the expression “throwing bread to the dogs?” The Jews often spoke of the Gentiles with arrogance and insolence as “unclean dogs” since the Gentiles were excluded from God's covenant and favor with Israel. For the Greeks the “dog” was a symbol of dishonor and was used to describe a shameless and audacious woman. Matthew 7:6 records the expression: “do not give dogs what is holy.” Jesus, no doubt, spoke with a smile rather than with an insult because this woman immediately responds with wit and faith – “even the dogs eat the crumbs.”

Prayer: Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Notice how Jesus praises this Gentile woman for her faith and for her love. She made the misery of her child her own and she was willing to suffer rebuff in order to obtain healing for her loved one. She also had indomitable persistence. Her faith grew in contact with the person of Jesus. She began with a request and she ended on her knees in worshipful prayer to the living God. No one who ever sought Jesus with faith was refused his help. Do you seek Jesus with expectant faith?

Page 10: Raise our Hearts & Prayers to God...2016/07/31  · JULY 31, 2016 – YEAR C PRELUDE INTRODUCTORY RITES ENTRANCE: Come Now, Almighty King (#715) GLORIA: A New Mass for Congregations

Thursday, August 4 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint John Vianney, Priest (Patron Saint of Priests)

Holy Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23 Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Meditation: When Jesus told his disciples that he must suffer many things, be rejected by the religious authorities in Jerusalem, and then be put to death, he also prophesied that he would be raised on the third day. Peter, always quick to respond, rejected the notion that the Messiah must suffer and be killed. This wasn't the kind of Messiah that Peter and the Jews expected. They didn't understand that the prophet Isaiah, some 700 hundred years before Christ's birth, foretold that God's Anointed One would come as the Suffering Servant who would be despised, rejected, and put to death to atone for the sins of the world [see Isaiah 52:13-15; Isaiah 53:1-12] . Jesus saw in Peter's rejection a temptation to avoid the way of the cross which involved obedience and trust in God's will, and voluntary suffering and sacrifice for the sake of others. Jesus rebuked not only Peter but Satan, the greatest of angels who disobeyed and refused to serve his Lord and Creator. Are you ready to follow the Lord Jesus, to suffer and die for him, that you may also share in his glory and resurrection?

Prayer: Almighty and merciful God, who made the Priest Saint John Vianney wonderful in his pastoral zeal, grant, we pray, that through his intercession and example we may in charity win brothers and sisters for Christ and attain with them eternal glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: The question that Jesus asks his disciples is one that Jesus also asks each one of us: Who do YOU say that I am? And so, who is Jesus for you? If you truly believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, sent by God to redeem us, sent by God to show us the way, the truth and the life that we are to follow, how do we respond by our individual and collective actions to Jesus’ question “Who do YOU say that I am?” Actions speak louder than words; your response to this question is not only important, but can also be a life-changing moment for you. Think about your response; do something about it!

Friday, August 5 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Dedication of Saint Mary Major

Holy Gospel: Luke 11:27-28 While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”

Meditation: When an admirer wished to compliment Jesus by praising his mother, Jesus did not deny the truth of the blessing she pronounced. Her “beatitude” (which means “blessedness”) recalls Mary's canticle: “All generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). Jesus adds to her words by pointing to the source of all true blessedness – union with God in heart, mind, and will. Mary humbly submitted herself to the miraculous plan of God for the incarnation of His only begotten Son – the Word of God made flesh in her womb, by declaring: “I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Mary heard the word spoken to her by the angel and she believed it.

Prayer: Pardon the faults of your servants, we pray, O Lord, that we, who cannot please you by our own deeds, may be saved through the intercession of the Mother of your Son and our Lord. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: It is one thing to “hear” the word of God. But what happens next is entirely up to us. Do we then find ourselves opening our minds and hearts to let the word of God inspire us to change our way of life? To align our minds and our hearts more closely to that of Jesus Christ? To enlighten us about the

Page 11: Raise our Hearts & Prayers to God...2016/07/31  · JULY 31, 2016 – YEAR C PRELUDE INTRODUCTORY RITES ENTRANCE: Come Now, Almighty King (#715) GLORIA: A New Mass for Congregations

path that we are to take so that God’s plan unfolds in our lives? To teach us right living from sinful ways? To humbly submit to doing the will of God? Or do we “hear” the word of God and find ourselves doing little or nothing about it – in one ear and out the other, perhaps. As St. James reminds us, we are to “Become doers of the word and not hearers only.” By hearing the word of God, and observing it – putting the word of God and the teachings of Christ into action – we become blessed in the eyes of the Lord.

Saturday, August 6 ~ Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

Holy Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9 Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Meditation: This is one of the most significant events in all of scripture with God himself speaking and those present to hear God’s voice and record and convey God’s message for our benefit. Jesus went to the mountain knowing full well what awaited him in Jerusalem – his betrayal, rejection and crucifixion. Jesus very likely discussed this momentous decision to go to the cross with Moses and Elijah. God the Father also spoke with Jesus and gave his approval: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” The Father glorified his son because he obeyed. The cloud which overshadowed Jesus and his apostles fulfilled the dream of the Jews that when the Messiah came the cloud of God's presence would fill the temple again (ref. Exodus 16:10, 19:9, 33:9; 1 Kings 8:10; 2 Maccabees 2:8). The Lord Jesus not only wants us to see his glory – he wants to share this glory with us. And Jesus shows us the way to the Father's glory – “follow me” Christ says to each of us, obey my words, take the path I have chosen for you and you will receive the blessings of my Father's kingdom. Jesus succeeded in his mission because he went to Calvary so that Paradise would be restored to us once again. He embraced the cross to obtain the crown of glory that awaits each of us, if we will follow in his footsteps. Discovering God's kingdom is like stumbling across hidden treasure or finding the one pearl of great price. When we discover the kingdom of God we receive the greatest possible treasure — the Lord himself. Selling all that we have to obtain this incomparable treasure could mean many things — our friends, job, our "style of life", what we do with our free time. Treasure has a special connection to the heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure. Is the Lord the treasure and delight of your heart? If not, remove those things in your life that impede Christ from taking that rightful place.

Prayer: O God, who in the glorious Transfiguration of your Only Begotten Son confirmed the mysteries of faith by the witness of the Fathers and wonderfully prefigured our full adoption to sonship, grant, we pray, to your servants, that, listening to the voice of your beloved Son, we may merit to become co-heirs with him. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Origen, the great third century bible scholar, shows us how the transfiguration can change our lives: “When he is transfigured, his face also shines as the sun that he may be manifested to the children of light who have put off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light, and are no longer the children of darkness or night but have become the sons of day, and walk honestly as in the day. Being manifest, he will shine unto them not simply as the sun, but as demonstrated to be the sun of righteousness.”
