6 of them had pointed leaves, the rest were rounded. 4 of them had orange flowers, the rest had red flowers. Only 3 had pointed leaves and orange flowers. How many plants had rounded leaves and red flowers?

Ben then compared 15 different plants that grow in the under story layer.

8 of the plants had huge leaves for capturing sunlight. 10 of the plants were flowering. Only 5 of the plants had huge leaves and flowers.

Ben compared 20 plants from the canopy layer.

14 of the plants were huge trees and had their roots on the ground, the rest were epiphytes (plants which grow on the braches of the trees).

Ben found frogs living on a total of 9 plants’ leaves. He only found frogs on the leaves of 5 of the trees.

How many of the epiphytes were frog free?

Ben compared 24 different trees them from the emergent layer to see which birds nested in them.

15 of the trees provided homes for toucans; the rest had macaws nesting in them.

13 trees had small waxy leaves; the others had lost their leaves.

9 of the trees with small waxy leaves had toucans nesting in them. How many leafless trees had macaws nesting in them?

Rainforest Predator Puzzles

Zoë the zoologist studied animals living in the different layers of the rainforest. She was studying 45 different species of small animals in the forest floor level to see how many are eaten by jaguars or anacondas.

Jaguars eat 27 different animal species. Anacondas eat 19 different animal species. 11 animal species were eaten by both jaguars and

anacondas. The remaining animal species were found to be very

poisonous so nothing eats them.

How many poisonous animals did Zoë discover?

Some mammals are carnivores (meat eaters), some are herbivores (plant eaters) and some mammals will eat meat and plants (omnivores). Zoë studies exactly 100 mammals.

63 mammals are carnivores. 55 mammals are herbivores. 36 mammals are omnivores . The remaining mammals eat only insects (insectivores).

How many insectivores did Zoe find?

Zoe spent 1 week collecting beetles and spiders from the rainforests of Brazil. In one week, she found 56 species of spider and 68 species of beetle. When she looked in her study books, she discovered the creatures lived on the ground level, in the under story level or below the surface of the River Amazon.

40 species of spider and 38 species of beetle live the ground level. 37 species of spider and 44 species of beetle live the under story level. 29 species of spider and 19 species of beetle live in both the ground level and under story level.

How many spiders and how many beetles live under the surface of the Amazon?

Zoe searched three of the world’s rainforests looking at snakes that kill prey using venom and those that kill prey using constriction (squeezing). She found a total of 344 venomous species of snake and 316 constrictors. The three rainforests she compared were: the Amazon rainforest, the rainforest of Central Africa and the rainforest of Indonesia:

She found 156 constrictor snakes and 190 venomous snakes in the Amazon Rainforest. She found 178 constrictor snakes and 140 venomous snakes in the Central African Rainforest. 106 constrictor snakes and 94 venomous snakes live in both the Amazon and the Central African

rainforests. The remaining snakes only live in the rainforests of Indonesia.

How many more venomous snakes than constrictor snakes did Zoë find in rainforests of Indonesia?Constrictor snakes Venomous snakes
