T he MTN8 quarter-finals provided a tasty curtain-raiser, but the real business begins

this weekend with the kick-off of the new DStv PSL campaign.

All the traditional con-tenders for the title have shown their hand this past weekend with champi-ons Mamelodi Sundowns beaten; Kaizer Chiefs still scrambling and Orlando

Pirates not overly convinc-ing.

SuperSport United also threw their hat into the ring, but it is hard to see any other challengers coming out.

Now we get to see the supporting cast and new clubs like Swallows and TS Galaxy. As usual, this season’s ba�le against rel-egation is going to be fas-cinating. The many teams

This is a much harder weight assignment (compared to Kasimir based on their Sco�sville clash,) but No Laying Up goes well first up a�er a break and has scope to get into the fray.

Both Skidoo and Fateful a�empt a big hike up the class ladder. They have contrasting running styles – the game and consistent Skidoo (s/s 101) likes to press a fast pace and is conveniently drawn towards the inside as speed on the rail has been holding up well at Kenilworth lately.

Fateful tends to jump tardily then make headway towards the la�er stages when the front runners tire. Those hold-up tactics have twice paid recent dividends against inferior opposition over this course and distance in wet going, but the six-year-old will need to significantly up his speed figures (best of just 95) if he is to get by these much more accomplished rivals and complete a personal hat-trick.

Constable enjoyed a good Cape Summer last term but now returns a�er bleeding and being suspended on an abortive KZN mission, so his competitive fitness is a big query.

Elusive Trader is capable as a two- time defending victor in the South Easter Sprint. In December 2020 he edged out Constable in that race and typically runs figures around 100 – 102. A sudden repeat of his June wake-up run to Worlds Your Oyster would give him a remote upset chance on these comparatively more favourable weight terms. However, he’s become unreliable, and the majority of this years declining efforts have been off-pu�ing.

characters; from aging former champ, Kasimir to upwardly- mobile challengers, Worlds Your Oyster and No Laying Up, plus in-form lightweights carrying 52kg’s, Fateful and Skidoo.

Seven-year-old, Kasimir used to run speed figures of 114 and would have thrown this field a tow rope in his prime. He’s by no means past it though - his recent best when dashing home to win the G2 Merchants at Greyville from a bad draw was worthy of a fine number of 109 +, so he’s still a potent force even if the aches and niggles of advancing years are catching up.

Kasimir is allocated a high weight of 61kg’s as he strives for a 12th win from 31 starts. If Justin Snaith has been able to keep the old-stager in sound physical order a�er the Durban campaign, then both speed scores and official merit ratings peg Kasimir as clearly the most probable winner.

But he cannot afford to give too much start to the temperamental grey, Worlds Your Oyster who has won six of 15 starts, special-izing in quick races like this down the Kenilworth straight. He is on the improve, running escalating speed figures of 97 +, 103 and most recently 105. If in a galloping mood and again able to control things upfront, then he rates a serious menace to the class- dropping, top weight.

No Laying Up (speed score 100 +) is lightly raced with upside potential. Blinkered for the first time, he was only two lengths shy of Ba�le Force in the Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint at Sco�sville at his last try three months ago. He led a quality field there for a long way and kept on resolutely when

Here in Cape Town, despite a few odd showers still here and there, one can certainly feel that Spring is in the air as the first month of the new racing season draws to a close.

It has also been very quiet on the racing front, with a limited number of fixtures for August.

On Saturday we see the running of our first feature race of the 2021/22 campaign, where the newly turned 3 year-olds will be in action. The roll of honour indicates that by and large, this race normally produces a mix bag of results.

The Sophomore Sprint (Listed) is the headline event of a 10 race programme at Kenilworth. MASKED VIGILANTE (back from a break); ZAPATILLAS and XAVION are lightly raced and could be anything. All of whom come into the race unbeaten. Judging by the riding arrangements, I’m siding with YOU KNOW WHO as my selection. He is having his 3rd run since being gelded, has got solid form against stronger, is racing fit and should make his presence felt when it ma�ers most.

There is also every reason to believe that the powerful yard of champion trainer Justin Snaith could provide us with a quick double towards the la�er part of the day. KASMIR in the very next race potentially looks like the best bet on the card. He may be ge�ing on in years, but is favoured by the conditions of the race, as the highest rated and best weighted and need not be at his very best in this company. On recent form, he should take a power of beating and bounce back to winning ways.

With owners allowed back on course again, and the newly renovated Pocket Power lounge open for business, it will add to the atmosphere of what promises to be a good days racing!

TURFFONTEIN STANDSIDE (SA) - SAT 28 AUGUST FIELDS

Small but some quality fields dominate proceedings at Turffontein this weekend. This is the first inside track meeting for about a month and this course will be utilized until the end of October while the standside course gets its spring treatment. Draws become a bigger factor here.

Emerald Princess could be the horse to beat in race 1. She put up a smart performance on debut when finishing a smart third behind Warship. She is well bred and any improvement should see her win. Weiho Marwing is in good form too.

Tuscan Winter is a smart horse and trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren thinks he is a feature race candidate this season. He ought to show that in race 2. He was touched off at his last start but the run shouldn't dampen hopes for him. Gavin Lerena takes the ride.

The same yard and jockey team up with the likely winner of race 3. About To Storm ran third on debut behind what looks like a smart horse in Prince Of Fire. Like Emerald Princess, any improvement should see him take a power of beating.

Race 5 is an open and strong Maiden Plate. Wave Warrior, Slings And Arrows, Successful Ruler and Admiral Dooley can all win. Preference is read in that order.

Captain Hindsight adapted well to the extra distance at his last start. He has a huge weight to carry but that is offset by an apprentice allowance of Xola Jacobs. My horse, Banha Bridge runs and carries a very light weight of 52.5kg and has the services of Warren Kennedy. He is very well but doesn't run his best on the inside track. Here's hoping he is well enough to win on the tight turning course.

It was a remarka-bly strong season for Cape- bred’s as they triumphed in 27 G1 races during the period under review, including the Varsfontein Stud bred, Yulong Prince (formerly known here as Surcharge) who won Australia’s G1 Kennedy Cantala.

Fans can pick out their personal favour-ites and try pre-empting what the judges decided. Grade 1 victories, overall career records, notable performances measured by ability ratings and head-to-head clashes/collateral form are some of the criteria used to weigh up competing claims. In certain categories, “stand-out winners” practically pick themselves – other divisions are more puzzling and contentious!

Sassy Chasey fell, unseating Herrera. In turn, Whiskey Blue (ridden by Kyle Frey), Corners Up (Juan Espinoza), Phoenix Tears (Tiago Pereira), and Renegade Princess (Tyler Baze) came crashing down behind Sassy Chasey. Cesar Ortega, riding Backtoflash, and Emily Elling-wood, on Siena Silk, galloping farther back in the field, were also unseated in the ensuing melee.

Of 12 runners in this wacky race, only five finished. In terms of Californian rules, officials declared the race a no -contest. Thankfully, none of the horses got badly hurt and all jockeys escaped serious injury. The day before Pereira had won his first G1 in America, on Tripoli in the prestigious Pacific Classic – such are the fluctuating fortunes

experienced by jockeys in a fast-paced profession suitable only for true adrenalin junkies!

As competitive (even gung-ho) as the jockeys can be, there is an over-riding sense of “being in it together” which leads to boister-ous camaraderie and a sporting willingness to help one another out in a crisis. That was yet again in evidence in a minor, bush meeting staged over the weekend in Roma, Queensland, Australia.

A 17-year-old female apprentice, Lilli Barr was pitched sideways a�er her mount stumbled, and she was for 100m, in her own words, “just hanging on for dear life” until experienced colleague, John Rudd grabbed hold of her and aided her safely back into the saddle.

As quoted in the Racing Post, Barr continued, “I didn't want to fall and get trampled on and I was worried I was going to get my feet stuck in the stirrups and dragged along. I obviously didn't want that, especially on the dirt. Luckily Johnny Rudd came up alongside me. John pulled me back up and if he didn't, I think I was about to fall so he really helped me a lot. He's the hero."

This was only Barr’s fourth ride of her life. Just a few days previously she’d won at her first ever race. It seems that “Racing’s (fickle) Goddess of Fortune” and a compassionate veteran hoop seem to be looking kindly upon her early endeavours to make it as a jockey!
