Amla scored 66 in South Africa’s total of 279 for eight in 48.2 overs to reach 5000 runs in 101 innings, well ahead of the previous record of 114 jointly held by West Indies great Viv Richards and Indian batsman Virat Kohli. With their target cut to 225 in 32 overs, West Indies collapsed after the loss of blazing opener Chris Gayle to end 164 all out from 28.2 overs and slip to a 61-run defeat on the Duckworth/Lewis method. South Africa won the toss and elect- ed to bat, but made a poor start when they slumped to 16 for two. Two big partner- ships involving top- scorer AB de Villiers (81) repaired the early damage though as he put on 99 with Amla and 123 with powerful left-hander David Miller (70). A torrential downpour ended the innings 10 balls shy of the allotted overs and when play resumed two hours and 43 minutes later, the tourist were handed a stiff revised target. Gayle (41), so scintillat- ing in the recently completed Twenty20 series, blazed away but lost his wicket when attempting an ugly base- ball swipe at a Dale Steyn delivery. He was caught behind by De Villiers. With him went the West Indies hopes but they did not help themselves with more poor shot selection. Striker Lee Jeong-hyeop scored a perfectly-executed goal in the first half to give his team a surprise lead then the Koreans held on against a wave of Australian attacks to clinch the victory. The win meant South Korea finished at the top of the Group A standings with three wins and will play either Uzbekistan or Saudi Arabia in the quarter- finals. As Group A runners- up, Australia will play the Group B winners China with the defending champions Japan lurking as a possible semi-finalist. The Australians domi- nated possession and terri- tory but paid a high price for squandering their best chances and resting some of their key players, including star striker Tim Cahill, who only came on for the last 20 minutes when the Socceroos were desperate for an equal- iser. The Korean goalkeeper Kim Jin-hyeon pulled off a series of sharp saves to keep his team ahead and the visitors were unlucky not to grab a second on the counter- attack as they raised hopes of winning their first Asian Cup since 1960. Lee, who was recalled to the starting lineup after missing South Korea’s previ- ous group win over Kuwait, broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when he got his foot on to a perfectly angled cross from his team mate Lee Keun-ho. The glance was just enough to divert the ball into the net at the far post, evad- ing the diving Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan. With both teams already assured of a place in the quarter-finals, the two regional powerhouses ini- tially adopted a cautious approach, on a hot and humid evening at Brisbane’s Lang Park that was invaded by thousands of moths. The match began in slight- ly bizarre circumstances when thousands of moths descended onto the stadium field and grandstands, forcing staff to vacuum some of the benches where players and officials were trying to sit. But once the Koreans scored, the match opened up as both teams ran themselves to the point of exhaustion. Tomi Juric forced the South Korean goalkeeper Kim Jin-hyeon to make a sharp save at the near post after an attacking run while James Troisi just missed the target after he fooled the Korean defence in the box and turned quickly to shoot. Waqar happy Pakistan not among favouritesIslamabad, Jan 17: Head coach Waqar Younis is happy Pakistan is not among the favorites for the World Cup and said Saturday it will keep his team focused on next month’s event without any added pressure.

Pakistan was not among the top teams at the 2011 World Cup but went on to reach the semifinals before losing to eventual champion India. “To be honest, it’s a big pressure of being favorites,” Younis told reporters.

Pakistan got a setback as Junaid Khan suffered a hamstring injury during training last Thursday, but the Pakistan Cricket Board said the left-arm fast bowler

“We had problems with our fast bowlers for the last few months and of course the recent episode with Junaid is a setback,” Younis said.

“All the bowlers will have to share the workload until the World Cup and probably that’s the way to get the best combination.” Younis him-self has some bitter memo-ries of the World Cup as he had to fly back home just before the 1992 event in Aus-tralia due to injury and Paki-stan went on to win the title.

Brisbane, Jan 17: South Korea upset Australia 1-0 at the Asian Cup on Saturday to top the Group A stand-ings and secure a poten-tially easier path to the final while leaving the host nation facing a treacherous route.

Striker Lee Jeong-hyeop scored a perfectly-executed goal in the first half to give his team a surprise lead then the Koreans held on against a wave of Australian attacks to clinch the victory.

The win meant South Korea finished at the top of the Group A standings with three wins and will play either Uzbekistan or Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals. As Group A runners-up, Australia will play the Group B winners China with the defending champions Japan lurking as a possible semi-finalist.

The Australians domi-nated possession and terri-tory but paid a high price

for squandering their best chances and resting some of their key players, including star striker Tim Cahill, who only came on for the last 20 minutes when the Socceroos were desperate for an equal-iser. The Korean goalkeeper Kim Jin-hyeon pulled off a series of sharp saves to keep his team ahead and the visitors were unlucky not to grab a second on the counter-attack as they raised hopes of winning their first Asian Cup since 1960.

Lee, who was recalled to the starting lineup after missing South Korea’s previ-ous group win over Kuwait, broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when he got his foot on to a perfectly angled cross from his team mate Lee Keun-ho. The glance was just enough to divert the ball into the net at the far post, evad-ing the diving Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

With both teams already

assured of a place in the quarter-finals, the two regional powerhouses ini-tially adopted a cautious approach, on a hot and humid evening at Brisbane’s Lang Park that was invaded by thousands of moths.

The match began in slight-ly bizarre circumstances when thousands of moths descended onto the stadium field and grandstands, forcing staff to vacuum some of the benches where players and officials were trying to sit.
