Apple ShipmentMoves Via Houston

An apple a dap keeps the doctor

au’aF -- Traditional SaFing

Enough apples moved throughthe refrigerated facility at Houston’sJacintoport Terminal recently tokeep a lot of doctors away for avery long time.

More than 240 48-foot trucks and40 40-foot containers were neededto hold the applc~ and applepowder loaded aboard the M/VCARIBBEAN MERMAID in lateNovember. All told, the sweet cargooccupied 660,000 cubic feet ofreefer space on the vessel.

"This is a first of its kind in theUnited States," said Ernie Gonsoulin, manager of Lusk Shipping Co., thefirm that arranged and managed theshipment. Lusk usually specializesin Caterpillar exports and imports.Refrigerated Warehouse

Harborside Refrigerated Servicesstored the apples as they arrivedfrom Arizona and Washington andpacked the trucks and containers.Located at Jacintoport Terminal,Harborside has 200,000 square feetof temperature and humidity con-trolled storage and a sophisticated, computerized handling systemgeared for large shipments ofagricultural commodities.

The bulk of the shipment con-sisted of Granny Smith apples sup-plied by Arizona Apple Orchards ofPhoenix, Arizona. The same com-pany also provided the 15 con-tainers of apple powder produced bytheir dehydration plant in Wilcox,Arizona. Red Delicious apples fromBroetje Orchards of Prescott, Wash-ington, were also included. Most ofthe shipment will be processed inEgypt and will ultimately be used byhumanitarian relief organizations.Annual Event

"This type of operation is sched-uled to be an annual occurrence andis a classic example of export com-merce benefiting the United Statesand the countries to which its prod-ucts are exported," said Gonsoulin.

For further information, contactGonsoulin at (713) 999-4400; BillLeshe at Harborside, (713)452-2614; or Mike Malin of ArizonaApple Orchards at (602) 995-8890.
