Rail Cables
Copper Trackside Communication Cable
Specification
• NR/PS/TEL/00015
Application
This range of cables is designed primarily for trackside railway installation.
Construction
UnarmouredThese twisted pair cables consist of solid plain copper conductors of either 0.63mm or 0.9mm in diameter. The conductors aresolid polyethylene insulated and two insulated conductors are twisted to form a pair*. The required number of pairs are laid upand petroleum jelly filled. Covering this are layers of: water swellable tape, paper core wrap and a black low-densitypolyethylene sheath. The cable incorporates a longitudinally applied aluminium/polyethylene moisture barrier, and is availablewith either a polyethylene or ZHLS sheath.
*Two-pair cables are laid up in quad formation.
ArmouredThe construction and pair formation are as above, but with the addition of rodent protection in the form of corrugated steel armour.

Fibre Trackside
Construction
Unarmoured TS1837, TS1927These cables consist of singlemode 250µm buffered fibres, arranged in stranded loose tube construction around a centralnon-metallic strength member, with fillers where required. Covering this are layers of water swellable tape, steel polymerlaminate tape and a polyethylene or LSZH sheath.
Armoured TS1837, TS1927The construction is as above, but with the addition of a corrugated steel polymer laminate tape armour, polyethylene or LSZH sheath.
Part numbers shown are for polyethylene sheathed cables. For LSZH cables, PE is replaced by LS in the part number e.g. 370-304-8LS2-12. Other sizes are available on request.Anixter also stock a complete range of fibre optic accessories, termination and test equipment including - internal and externalenclosures, connectors, adaptors, pigtails, patch cables, tool kits, fusion splicers and OTDR’s. More details are available on request.

Application
For use on d.c. traction systems to provide, the 650/750 V d.c. supply from traction substations and track paralleling huts tothe conductor rails and negative cable connections and, where appropriate, bonding.
Positive cables provide the connections between the positive d.c. switchgear and isolators and lineside equipment associatedwith the electrification system. This may include, conductor rails and between lengths of conductor rail.
Negative connections are installed at substations and track paralleling huts between the negative bar and electric trackequipment installed on the track. This may include impedance bonds, resonating bonds or terminating plates, running rails, negative conductor rails, reinforcing rails or running rails.

Technical Information
• Single-Core cables to NR/PS/ELP/00008 for a.c. or d.c electrified lines
N.B. High voltage cables are not specifically covered in IEE Wiring Regulations but reference should be made to ensure compliance.
For ambient air and ground temperatures other than those specified, the following factors should be applied.
• Standard depth of laying 0.8m (to centre of cable or duct group)
• Thermal resistivity of soil 1.2°C m/W
• Standard ground temperature 15°C
• Ambient air temperature 25°C
• Maximum conductor temperature 90°C
Single phase ratings are based on following cable configurations:
Cables laid in air and in ground - Two cables with axial spacing of 2 x cable diameters Cables laid in ducts - One cable per duct, with axial spacing of 2 x duct diameters
Three phase ratings are based on following cable configurations:
Cables laid in air and in ground - Cables laid in trefoil formation
Cables laid in ducts - One cable per duct, with ducts arranged in trefoil formation (ratings are also available for 3 x cables in a single duct)

Technical Information
The above ratings are based on a single cable isolated in free air and assumes ambient air temperature of 30°C and conductoroperating temperature of 85°C.
Where cables are to be used in ambient temperatures other than 30°C the following rating factors should be applied:
Where cables are to be grouped, the following factors should be applied:
• Item numbers 26-36 inclusive may also be used in exposed installations but only when rated at 600/1000 V
• Cables below 25mm2 shall not be used in exposed installations and will normally be installed in ducts, conduit, cabinets, etc.
