PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Stage 1 of the Parramatta Light Rail comprises of 12km dual track alignment, with a mix of on-street and
dedicated corridor including 16 station stops. CAF TE are part of the SOM (Supply Operate and Maintain)
contract responsible for the Systems delivery activities, Light Rail Vehicle procurement and Operations &
Maintenance once the project transitions from the delivery to operation phase in 2023.
BWB were responsible for the delivery of the Signalling solution, embedded within the CAF TE Engineering
delivery team. The responsibilities include the design, interface management, manufacture, installation,
test, commissioning and entry into service of the chosen system. The delivery teams are spread across
Australia, UK, Spain & Italy so the use of video conferences and good time co-ordination between the
different time zones was key.
BWB’s Rail Civils Team also provided peer review and value engineering services to CAF for all the civil
structures on the project, including bridges. OHW support and retaining structures.

BWB played a key role in Nottingham's NET Phase 2 tram extension, delivering transport, traffic signal and
infrastructure design services. The £570m scheme has extended the lines to Chilwell and Clifton, more than
doubling the size of the city's tram network by adding 11 miles of track, 28 stations and 22 trams.
BWB has been involved for over a decade, initially providing detailed traffic modelling and highway
design of junctions on projects that connect to the tram route including ng2 Business Park, Highfields
Science Park and Medi-Park. Following this the NET Promoter appointed BWB for the Advanced Design
Phase of the scheme where we reviewed and redesigned five shared-use traffic signal controlled
junctions on the tram route through Beeston town centre. We were later commissioned by Nottingham
City Council to assist them in checking the detailed design proposals prepared by the scheme's external
design team.
The extension opened to the public in August 2015 and it is anticipated that the scheme could help
generate £300 million a year for the local economy and help create up to 8,000 jobs.

BWB Consulting is proud to be part of the team delivering the exciting £400 million iPort logistics
development in Doncaster. The 700-acre scheme has outline planning consent for up to 6 million sq ft of
warehouse space and will incorporate a 35-acre dedicated strategic rail freight terminal. The developers
Verdion estimate that iPort will bring up to 5,000 new jobs to the area when fully operational.
BWB has supported the project from its early planning stages and have been appointed by Verdion to
provide primary infrastructure, ground improvement and earthworks design. Our range of services has
included highways design, surface water and foul water design, hydraulic modelling, flood risk assessment
and supervision of onsite infrastructure works.
In addition to civils design for the rail terminal, BWB was also responsible for the drainage, structural and
foundation design of the first two warehouse units that were speculatively developed by Verdion.

BWB undertook full responsibility for the gauging workstream part of the CAF Class 197 rolling stock
introduction to the Wales and Borders areas.
BWBs roles were Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM), Project Manager, Contractors Responsible
Engineer (CRE) and surveyors for the GRIP 1-3 deliverables of around 30 sites. BWB delivered the surveys,
gauging assessments and option selection reports where works were required. This was undertaken to
Network Rail standards.
BWB assisted with the scope development by reviewing the national gauging database and utilising
supply chain contacts to understand local knowledge in the area. BWB formed a collaborative
relationship with the Network Rail Gauging Engineers to ensure full understanding of the work and
deliverables were coherent.

Prologis Park Coventry is one of the country's most successful industrial parks. The scheme provides more
than 2 million sq ft of rail served, mixed commercial/distribution development and is excellently located
three miles from Junction 3 of the M6. Prologis Park was one of the first major projects that included all
BWB's disciplines and where we earned our stripes for delivering major multi-modal infrastructure. It also
helped move BWB to the front of the consultant pack in the UK industrial sector.
BWB provided a truly integrated engineering and environmental service to assist in the redevelopment of
this major brownfield former colliery site. The infrastructure comprised the construction of 5km of on and off
-site roads, widening of the M6 Junction 3, drainage networks included two feature balancing lakes and
the provision of a 3KM rail link and rail sidings to the distribution buildings.

BWB were appointed by Shapir Civil & Marine Engineering Ltd to undertake the track for the J-NET
Jerusalem Light Rail Project. A Joint Venture consortium of CAF and Shapir won the $2billion contract to
Design, Build, Maintain and Operate the new Green Line and an extension of the existing Red Line.
BWB's track design work commenced in January 2020 and was delivered entirely via our UK based track
design team, with initial co-ordination and interface provided to the Client by a locally based design
manager. Travel restrictions due to Covid-19 had little impact on BWB's delivery and the experienced
team met each of the ambitious design delivery milestones.
BWB's scope is to deliver the track design for the entire project, which includes:
- 7km twin track extension to existing Red Line
- 20km twin track new green line
- Circa 250 units of Switches and Crossings (S&C)
- Design of two new depots and the extension one existing depot.

BWB's Client, Rendel were appointed by Eurotunnel as the Principal Contractor to design & construct a
new Modalohr Station within Dollands Moor Depot in order to provide additional capacity for the
loading/unloading of commercial freight vehicles on the UK Terminal. This will become part of an overall
project known as 'Terminal d'Avenir. The new system will enable the loading/unloading of several wagons
simultaneously.
BWB was appointed by Rendel as their rail design consultancy and instructed the start of GRIP 3 design for
Signalling, Track & OLE. BWB undertook the Signalling design in-house and utilised its supply chain for the
delivery of Track & OLE while acting as the main integrator for these disciplines.
The project is nearing the end of GRIP stage 3, where BWB is providing a lead role in the interface with
Network Rail.

East Midlands Gateway Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) delivers 6 million sq. ft. of rail and road
served warehousing, creating up to 7000 jobs. The scope includes extensive highway works including
major improvements to M1 junction 24 and provision of a new bypass for the village of Kegworth.
BWB has been involved extensively, providing engineering advice on transportation, highways, flooding
and also playing a key role in the production of the Development Consent Order (DCO). The early stages
of developing the DCO saw BWB set up and chair the transport working group for the scheme, which
included representatives from the 6 highway authorities.
The working group was set up with all of the highway authorities that cover or are close to EMG, given its
location adjacent to M1 junction 24 and close to 3 county borders. The working group was successful in
steering the production of the complex, multi-modal transport issues dealt with by the Transport
Assessment (TA). TA and related ES chapters were produced to the satisfaction of all the participating
highway authorities.
