About the Sports Dinner

The Annual Rady JCC Spor ts Dinner has become Winnipeg’spremier spor ts event and is the major fundraiser for the RadyJCC. For the past 42 years, the Annual Spor ts Dinner hasbrought some of the biggest names in spor ts to Winnipeg, featuring keynote speakers such as Magic Johnson, ScottyBowman, Bobby Hull, Don Cherry, Mickey Mantle, PeytonManning and Cal Ripken Jr.

The Spor ts Dinner provides the Rady JCC with the financialsuppor t to fund scholarships and programs for members ofour diverse community that wouldn’t otherwise have access tothese ser vices. It provides over $200,000 in subsidies eachyear for families experiencing economically hard times, programs for children, youth, adults and seniors.

At the event, we also take time to celebrate young athletes andtheir accomplishments, recognize individuals for their communityinvolvement and contributions, and honor community partners.

Our live, silent and rainbow auctions featureimpressive prize packages.

Streamlined Dinner Format:Our streamlined format means the dinnerwill end at 9:30 p.m. sharp. As in previousyears, all Gem, VIP, Auction, Diamond, Gold,Silver Sponsors and Gold Ticket Holders getaccess to our Pre-event reception and theywill also be given an invitation to our specialpost-event desser t reception, which includesa meet-and-greet.

This year’s Spor ts Dinner promises to be another exciting event aswe feature NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman as keynote speaker and Winnipeg’s own and TSN broadcaster, Sara Orlesky, as MC.

Featured Keynote Speaker Gary BettmanGary Bettman has ser ved theNational Hockey League asCommissioner since February 1,1993, and has guided the world’stop professional hockey leaguethrough more than two decades ofgrowth and advancement on and offthe ice.

By negotiating a long-term Collective Bargaining Agreementwith the National Hockey League Players’ Association and

long-term, multi-billion-dollar national broadcast rights agreementsin the United States (NBC Spor ts Group) and Canada (RogersCommunications), Commissioner Bettman has fosteredunprecedented economic stability for the League’s 30 teams.Between 1993 and 2014, League revenues increased nearlytenfold. On the ice, the NHL’s competitive balance may be unrivaledin professional spor ts: Through the implementation of rulesdesigned to accentuate the speed, skill and creativity of theplayers, every team has qualified for the playof fs at least once overthe past nine seasons and a different team has won the StanleyCup in each of the past 15 campaigns.

Special Guest Honouree: Frieman and Leibl FamiliesThe Rady Jewish Community Centre is excited to honour communityactivists, Arnold and Myra Friemanand their daughter, Nona Leibl andhusband, Ashley, at this year’s 43rdannual Rady JCC Spor ts Dinner.

The Frieman and Leibl families havegiven so much to the Jewish andgeneral communities through the years.

Arnold Frieman, a holocaust survivorand former a pilot in the Israeli AirForce during the War of Independence, came to Winnipeg more than 60

years ago seeking a peaceful fresh star t in life. Fast forward totoday, and Frieman is the president of Advance Electronics, thelargest independently-owned retail electronics store in WesternCanada, and a pillar of the Jewish community.

Arnold’s successes go beyond business. He was recently honouredby the Jewish National Fund, holds membership on the JewishCommunity Council, was past president of Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate, and has been a devout contributor to the Rosh Pina Synagogue, reflecting his commitment to his faith and to the State of Israel. His charity extends beyond the Jewish community, however. He is aformer director and vice-president of programming for the Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra and member of the board of the ManitobaConser vatory of Music. He’s also given time and resources to the RoyalWinnipeg Ballet and his alma mater, the University of Manitoba, the latterof which in ser ving on the U of M’s Medical Advisor y Board. Arnold wasalso the first inductee into the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation’s Honour Rollthis past year and was recently inducted into the Order of Manitoba.

Arnold and his wife, Myra, have two daughters, Nona and Gina, fivegrandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Meanwhile, Ashley and Nona Leibl have paved a path of their own inWinnipeg. Ashley has led a successful business life, currently ser ving asPresident & CEO of Reliable Tire, Kroy Tire, Curtis Tire and Sturgeon Tire.Nona, meanwhile, has played an integral role on the Rady JCC board, andin particular our Spor ts Dinner committee, while also ser ving in advisor ypositions for Jewish Child and Family Ser vices, Gray Academy, GROW andCancerCare Manitoba. She’s been an advocate and suppor ter of RadyJCC’s special needs programming through the years as well.

Ashley and Nona are the parents of four children, Marli (and husband,Josh Vickar), Sara, Lexi and Benji (all graduates of Gray Academy) andgrandson, Emerson.

The Frieman and Leibl families have always viewed community ser vice asa responsibility , not a burden. As long-time suppor ters of the Rady JCCand the Spor ts Dinner, we are thrilled to give them the recognition theydeser ve as this year’s special guest honourees.
