the data
Radius has amassed an unmatched amount of data that documents the exis-
tence and activities of over 26 million small and medium sized U.S. businessesBy collecting and organizing local information from across the Web and
through traditional data sources, Radius offers comprehensive insights de-
rived from billions of pieces of information. The result is the only living,
breathing data set representative of the small business economy in the U.S.
the report
This April, the U.S. Senate voted for and failed to pass seven new measure
addressing gun control. To determine how gun legislation may affect the econ
omy, we dove into the state of small and medium sized businesses that cater
to gun owners. We evaluated a range of businesses that comprise the small
business gun economy, including retail gun shops, gun part manufacturers,
shooting ranges, and more.

the size of the small business gun economy
A small or medium sized business, as indexed by Radius, employs fewer than
100 employees. These companies may not rake in billions in revenue separate-
ly, but when combined, they are the backbone of the American economy. More
Americans work for small and medium sized businesses than Fortune 500companies. We discovered that the small business gun economy very closely
reflects the small business economy as a whole: the largest percent of SMBs
in the U.S. employ fewer than five people, and there is an inverse relationship
between the number of individuals a company employs and the percentage of
the economy that they represents. As the employee count grows, the number
of businesses declines.

gun violence vs. gun business
Radius indexed the number of small and medium sized businesses in the U.S.
for which chief revenue comes from the sale of guns, gun parts, and gun ammu
nition as well as those whose primary business caters specifically to gun
owners. We compared the number of gun-related businesses to the number of
total businesses in each state and ranked them by the percentages of localbusinesses that revolve around the gun community. According to our data,
Montana is home to the largest percentage of gun-related businesses per
capita. Only two of the state with the most gun violence, as recorded in the
2010 census, also ranked in the top ten on our list.
More guns dont necessarily mean more gun violence.

the state of gun business in montana
When Congress voted on a number of gun control measures, Mon-
tanas Senators voted in favor of all measures supporting gun free-
dom, and against all measures banning gun freedom. They voted in
support of measures that would validate concealed-carry permits
across state lines, stop barring veterans deemed incapable of manag
ing their finances from owning guns, and make it easier to transport
guns between states. They also voted against measures that would
ban high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. When you considethe percentage of businesses per capita in Montana that support gun
owners, its no surprise that Montanas Senators voted to expand and
maintain gun freedom.
Economics may dictate the politics of gun control more than
violence or even the 2nd Amendment.

social media and gun releated businesses
Gun related businesses in the U.S. are a very socially active subset of
small businesses. Less than 15% of all small businesses indexed byRadius maintain Facebook pages, while almost a quarter of gun-relat
ed businesses do. The majority of gun-related businesses are search
able online, and people are having conversations about gun-related
businesses more frequently than theyre having conversations about
other types of small businesses. Guns are a hot topic online, and the
SMBs at the center of the gun debate have joined the conversation.
