About the Quality EXPO Conference: Health care executives, professionals, and clinicians throughout Michigan should mark their calendars and plan on attending MPRO’s 2008 Quality EXPO (Thursday, October 30, 2008). This quality improvement and patient safety conference represents a unique opportunity to learn about the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) national initiatives for quality improvement and patient safety projects for the next three years across multiple health care settings (hospital, physician office, and nursing home). Continuing education credits will be available.
Barry Straube, MD, CMS, Chief Medical Officer and Director, Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, will discuss CMS’s defined quality improvement and patient safety initiatives being implemented across the continuum of care to improve the quality, efficiency, and delivery of health care. The aim is to aggressively improve the quality of care through the themes of:
Beneficiary Protection (utilization review, quality of care review, review of beneficiary complaints);
Patient Safety (improving both inpatient surgical safety and heart failure, reducing rates of pressure ulcers in the nursing home and hospital, reducing rates and use of physical restraints, improving drug safety, and reducing rates of health care associated with MRSA infections);
Prevention (improving rates of cancer screenings for breast and colorectal cancer, improving rates for flu and pneumonia immunizations, and improving disparities related to diabetes self-management and chronic kidney disease prevention); and
Prevention - Disparities (improving diabetes management for underserved populations).
Other speakers include; Dale Bratzler, DO, MPH, Chief Executive Officer, Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Care; Michael H. Zaroukian, MD, PhD, FACP, Director, Clinical Informatics and Care Transformation, Sparrow Health System and Chief Medical Information Officer and Professor of Medicine, Michigan State University; Sharon Silow-Carroll, Author and Principal for Health Management Associates; and motivational speaker Liz Jazwiec.
