Sample track 1 write up James bates

With the first sample track i wanted for an old school early drake vibe so sampledvery mellow and distinct soft rock track I dont want to play around by Acespectrum.

Fistly i found the track on youtube.

Secondly I converted the track to MP3 format via Youtube to mp3. Once the trackwas converted and on my computer i imported the raw MP3 file into logic.

Once the track was imported i worked out the tempo, this was so it was eaiser to cutthe sample up as i could sync the tempo in logic to the track. I did this by zooming inand making sure that the backbeat always landed on the 2 and the 4 on the grid. The

tempo worked out at around 67 bpm

Once i had the tempo worked out I made a start cutting up the track into sectionswhich i liked, (usually a few beats long.)

Once Id chopped up the parts I liked from the sample, it was time to import theseaudio files into EXS24.I opened EXS24, went in the edit window and dragged these into the sampler, Iassigned each section to its own key I also made sure that pitch was off for eachsample so that it was played in the original key, and made sure one shot was off sothat the samples only played as long as i held the key down.

This is what the EXS24 edit window looked like once all the audio files wereimported.

Once Id imported all of the samples I put the click track on at the right tempo and

triggered the samples with my midi keyboard until i found a pattern which i liked.Once i was happy with what I was hearing I hit record!

Now the midi data was in, all I had to do was add drums. The sample was alreadygrooving nicely so i didnt feel the need for a complex Hat pattern, It just needed anold school but aggressive sounding kick & snare to give it a more hip hop vibe andan open hat before the snare. I kept the kick and snare pattern very simple. Hereswhat the session looked like after drums had been added

This was the basis of the instrumental done. It just needed structuring. After 8 or sobars i became bored so it needed a drop out / chorus section to change it up, Also itneeded an intro. I decided to keep things simple and create a duplicate track for theintro / chorus sample. I simply filtered the sample down to signify the intro and thechorus (Filtered out the high frequencies with an eq.) For the chorus I substituted asnare for a rimshot, and ditched the kick.

I then added a white noise sweep do bring it back into the chorus. I did this by usingthe noise oscillator in ESP i turned the sustain all the way up, played in one note

and automated the cutoff frequency this made the riser rise

For the outro I simply filtered the synth down with automation in order for it to fade &end.
