Hot Tip: PickleJar Connects As the name implies, PickleJar takes the concept of tipping performers into the digital space, but the idea goes further than that. In connecting artists with fans, venues and charitable organizations, the app offers engagement tools not previously collected on one platform. With an eye on big data and functionality for radio, PickleJar is aimed at being kind of a big dill ... er, deal. “The premise was to create an ecosystem that would serve artists at varying stages of the life cycle – from busker to the first tip to being inducted into the Opry – rather than just a way for money to move back and forth,” says CEO/Founder Jeff James, whose wide-ranging background includes a run serving on the CRS Agenda Committee.

The money, of course, is important, if not central to PickleJar’s pitch to the creative community. “The artist gets 100% of the intended tip,” James says. “They’ve all used other platforms for tips, so they know how much is taken away from them.” Revenue is derived from a small surcharge users pay

above the amount they chose to tip (for example, a $20 tip adds $0.99). Artists can not only take requests and receive tips – or “notes” – they can sell merch, stay in touch with fans and designate a portion of proceeds to verified charities. The app even divides tips/proceeds among performers. “Down on Broadway, you might have two people onstage who just met that day,” says President/Founder Kristian Barowsky, whose background is in design and branding. “They have to trust each other to add up all the Venmos, and they also have to trust each other’s math. This takes all the trust and guesswork out of it.” Trust issues aside, why not just use Venmo? “Why not keep using cassette tapes?” James says. “Not one artist I’ve shown this to has defended the system they use now. Kristian and I met with some artists who showed us

the four or five apps they use to stitch together fan interaction – tipping, texts, chat, set list, lyrics. We put all of it in one audience engagement tool.” For artists beyond the tipping stage, PickleJar can be used for song requests and more. “Prior to a performance going live, fans can vote with their dollars on what they want to hear,” James says. “Artists can increase audience engagement, crowdsource a setlist

and monetize it. We’ve never had that kind of connective tissue with fans before.” Chief Strategy Officer/Partner Alex Valentine sees information as opportunity. “My experience being on the radio was that the best research was money out of people’s pockets,” he says. “Before SoundScan, I used to call record stores. The metrics are different now with streams, downloads, TikTok and the like, but cash is still king. When people open their wallet, it tells you something.” James adds, “We call that Live Play Data, and it’s a huge part of our future.” Among the company’s board members are Reatro Ventures’ Jason Bailey, Cox/Houston’s Johnny Chiang and CRB board member Judy Lakin. Valentine views ties to radio and its community service mandate as obvious. “In the aftermath of storms or other disasters, people are always asking how to help,” he says. “Why wait the weeks or months it takes to organize something? Why not let fans join radio and the artists in helping at the speed the news moves?” “This allows radio to get back to the core mission of serving their communities,” James says. “They can celebrate the performers who are up-and-coming in their community, and they can activate millions of listeners in times of crisis.” Valentine illustrates: “I remember doing a remote at a Mazda dealership in Dallas where one of the young men who washed cars had been diagnosed with cancer. I mentioned it on-air and encouraged people to come by and help with his medical expenses, but how great would it have been if I could have sent anyone who was listening to an app. It would have taken five seconds and done so much more good. The ideas can get really big, really fast.” Details at the website here; reach Valentine here.

Phathead says he finds himself paying attention to social media data more now when considering conversions, as well. “It’s very important for programmers to remove themselves from their personal Country [radio] bubble,” explains Phathead, who sites his consumption of Pop radio, social media and YouTube, and his attention to the all-genre download charts, as metrics for future

hit prediction. “Gabby Barrett, for example, has crossed to Pop radio, has two of the biggest downloaded songs of the past year ... and it isn’t a matter of if but when her third single explodes and shoots her into superstardom.” Curtis WQDR/Raleigh PD Mike “Mad Dawg” Biddle relies heavily on research and says Priscilla Block’s “Just About Over You” has been an undeniable hit for them. “Priscilla is local and actually won a contest with us when she was in high school to be Tim McGraw’s roadie for a day, so when we saw the reaction she was getting on TikTok and iTunes, I reached out to her and had her on-air featuring the song,” he explains. Listener feedback and research have continued to climb, and Block’s single is currently among ‘QDR’s most-played. “You have to pay attention to what’s happening on social media and streaming and come up with creative ways to expose that content and be in the moment with listeners,” continues Biddle. “I’m certainly not prepared to make rotation decisions based on social media likes, [but] we need to be aware of trends and react accordingly for our individual stations and brands.” Music Choice Sr. Mgr./Programming Jim Murphy was also early to the table for Jannakos. “We’d gotten an advance copy of ‘Gone Too Soon’ and added it early in January to our Pop & Country channel where we often test new artists and songs,” he says. “Based on the metrics we saw from the early airplay and the impressive streaming numbers, we made the decision to add it on impact date later in February to Today’s Country, which is our Mediabase monitored channel.” Murphy cites social media as playing a role in confirming those early indicators of success, adding, “It can give us a quick snapshot on an artist or song out of the gate, but we always look at the bigger research picture to make sure social numbers align with the target audience for each of our channels.” With more artists cutting through on social platforms, Meyer doubles-down saying, “We as a medium and a format should be looking to these sites to find artists who can bring those large audiences and their ears to radio. More and more, this is where music discovery is happening, and radio needs to realign the way we view these apps and the success artists are finding there.” Phathead adds, “If you don’t pay attention to the world outside of our radio bubble, a lot is going to pass you by.” Both Biddle and Murphy, meanwhile, reiterate the importance of passing social and streaming metrics through a more thorough research lens. “Just because a song is worked to Country radio doesn’t mean all or even the majority of streams are being consumed by Country P1s, and there’s never a substitute for knowing your audience,” believes Murphy. Adds Biddle, “We get a lot of hype pitched to us every week regarding social and streaming data; some of it is legit, and some of it you have to take with a grain of salt. It is hard to decipher, and at the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for your listeners and your brand.” The confluence on some social platforms of a younger audience and artists’ ability to amass a fan base can be additive for stations. “Radio might still be the biggest stick, but we aren’t the only ones in the game, so why not take what’s working elsewhere and bring it to our stations?” Meyer asks. Notes Biddle, “Platforms like TikTok are turning 15-30 second music clips into hits for radio, so there’s obviously a way for us to mimic that experience and satisfy the hunger to discover new music without having to overload a playlist with unfamiliar music. We need to pay attention, but be careful not to overreact or underreact.” Reach Meyer here, Phathead here, Biddle here and Murphy here.

An Off The Record conversation with iHeartMedia WSIX/Nashville afternoon personality/producer Tay Hamilton: I was raised in a radio station because of my dad [Hollywood Hamilton], so I grew up on WKTU/New York and KIIS/Los Angeles. Outside of those, being from Las Vegas meant I was obsessed with KLUC and The Chet Buchanan Show in high school. When I was in the car with my mom, we loved jamming to Country radio – specifically KWNR/Las Vegas – which is where I ended up landing my first full-time on-air spot. I have so many peers and mentors, but my biggest mentor was my dad. I never knew at age 10 when I was sitting in the studio with him that I was actually soaking it all in. I knew if I wanted to pursue a career in radio, I’d have to go after it on my own without help from my dad. I convinced then-iHeartMedia/Vegas OM Chris Pickett it’d be a good idea to get me in the door by calling and telling him I’d be willing to pick up trash. I just wanted to be around radio! He told me I could intern with a morning show on then-KPLV/Las Vegas where I met Wayne D, learned the board and – if I was lucky – would jump on-air from time to time for a bit. I’ve learned so much from Wayne D throughout my career, and he’s been someone I could get solid advice from, so I’m excited to now be working alongside him on his shows. I can never choose just one favorite, but the song that has been on repeat lately for me is “Lil Bit” by Nelly and Florida Georgia Line. It’s a fun song I can turn up loud and move to. Martina McBride will always be a favorite of mine, because I have so many memories with my mom blasting Martina. Anytime I hear her, I instantly get nostalgic and emotional; I’m a sap. Alan Jackson was my first crush back in the ‘90s, and he has always had such fun songs. He’s one of those artists that, when his songs come on, I have flashbacks to places or things I was doing when I first heard them. I was also raised on The G.O.A.T., Garth Brooks! There are so many of his songs that bring back memories of my family, and he’s so dang cool! Maren Morris’ Girl album is relatable front to back, and I feel every word. It came out during a year that was pivotal in my life when I was coming into my own and getting to know myself more. Songs like “Girl,” “All My Favorite People” and “Flavor” meant a lot to me during that time. Outside of country, P!nk is a female artist I’ve always looked up to because she’s a strong, independent female who isn’t afraid to break boundaries. I was obsessed with her albums Missundaztood, Funhouse and I’m Not Dead. I still am! The biggest thing I learned in 2020 was to not be afraid of change and to fully embrace it. When I came to Nashville, I was scared out of my mind because the West Coast was all I had never known. During that changing process, I learned so much about myself, and it brought my family closer. I’ve gotten to show my personality and embrace who I’ve become, and I believe it’s because I stepped outside of my comfort zone. The pandemic-inspired life adaptation I’ll carry forward is slowing down. This taught us all it’s okay to spend more time being present. In the past year, we’ve utilized social media in many ways with virtual shows via Instagram Live or setting up appointment times with listeners to catch up on Facebook Live via Wayne D’s What’s Up Wednesday. Sometimes we invited artists to join, as well, and we tried to make the best of it. I’m in the awkward phase where I need to find a new show to watch. I enjoyed Ginny And Georgia, which was relatable to me as a mom. If I’m not working or taking my son to basketball and karate practice, we’re outside in the sunshine, but I’m thinking about starting Game Of Thrones from the beginning again. Reach Hamilton here.
