Host Intro:

President Obama has officially come out to state that there needs to be a stop to the controversial treatment known as gay and transgender conversion therapy. This response comes only a few months after a transgender teen committed suicide. Before the suicide, the transgender teen left a message including references to religious therapy groups which attempted to change the 17 year old teen back to a boy. The White House is on record stating that they are in support of banning these conversion therapy groups to minors, however Obama is not taking any action on the a federal level but is urging states to create and enforce laws on a state level. Lawrence Larstanna a senior at Kean University had this to say…

Lawrence Larstanna Cue In:

In America you’re allowed to do, for the most part to do what you want, one of your rights is freedom of speech and you can preach what you want to preach…

Lawrence Larstanna Cue Out:

It’s hard for a president to get something like that across

Host Transition: Mary Katulak, a mother of two from East Brunswick had this to say on the subject

Mary Katulak Cue In:

I don t believe in it myself because I don’t believe you can be converted if, you’re either born gay or not gay…

Mary Katulak Cue Out:

You’re born with a certain sexual orientation I believe… but I think as a minor that should be up to the parents and the family, not to the state

Host Outro:

It is definitely a big step for human rights for President Obama to publicly announce that he is against gay conversion therapy. President Obama is in his second and final term and will not

have to worry about re-election, but is still not using his executive power to create new laws on a federal level to ban these treatments.

Sound Bites:

Lawrence Larstanna:

Gay conversion therapy is wrong, but on a federal level whether it should be legal or illegal, I mean like I said I personally agree with the fact that it’s wrong but In America you’re allowed to do, for the most part to do what you want, one of your rights is freedom of speech and you can preach what you want to preach cause this is America but sometimes what people want to preach isn’t the right thing. Either way it’s just wrong. I don’t think anybody should be forced to do something they don’t want to do. If the kids 15 years old and he truly believes he’s gay, I don’t feel that people should force them into a certain thing. But on a federal level it’s hard for a president to act on something like that to get something like that across.

Mary Katulak:

I don t believe in it myself because I don’t believe you can be converted if, you’re either born gay or not gay, you’re born with a certain sexual orientation I believe… but I think as a minor that should be up to the parents and the family, not to the state. So I don’t know if I would consider that a moral issue, but I think it’s the families right to decide that.
