radiosurgery and how is itused?
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is ahighly precise form of radiation therapyinitially used to treat tumors and otherabnormalities of the brain. Now theprinciples developed for cranial SRS arealso being used to treat cancer in other
parts of the body in a procedure calledstereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).
Despite its name, SRS is a non-surgicalprocedure that delivers precisely-tar eted radiation at much hi her doses

SRS and SBRT rely on severaltechnologies:
three-dimensional imaging andlocalization techniques that determinethe exact coordinates of the targetwithin the body
systems to immobilize and carefully
position the patient
highly focused gamma-ray or x-raybeams that converge on a tumor or
abnormality

Stereotactic radiosurgery and SBRT areimportant alternatives to invasive surgery,
especially for patients who are unable toundergo surgery and for tumors andabnormalities that are:
hard to reach
located close to vital organs
subject to movement within the body

Gamma Knife
Gamma Knife radiosurgery involves
four phases:
placement of the head frame,
imaging of the tumor location,
computerized dose planning,
radiation delivery.

procedure and whooperates the equipment?
The treatment team is comprised ofa number of specialized medical
professionals, typically including aradiation oncologist,
medical radiation physicist,
dosimetrist, radiation therapist,
radiation therapy nurse.

a w ee ur ng anafter the procedure?
Radiosurgery treatments are similarto having an x-ray. In general you
will not be able to see, feel or hearthe x-rays. One exception is thatsome patients who are havingtreatments to the brain may see
flashes of light while the machine ison, even with their eyes closed.
There is no pain or discomfort from
the actual treatment.
