A single substance that fuels everything in the world, a world of machines, and machines not yet feed with easily tapped electricity. Driven wheels stirred by chapped palms, drip-ping with sweat. As all necessities are its by product and / or under its control, the gain of it is the loss of others and the loss of it is the malfunction of the populations. And for its other dreadful effects will be another blockbuster horror story. R

Darker GesturesEDITORIAL

Philippines is an import-dependent nation. No doubt, we consider crude oil our economic life-blood. As an indispensable commodity it may be, a single centavo increase would trigger a domino effect on the sectors of the Philippine economy. Pinpointing the continuous political chaos in the oil-producing countries as the prime factor in the price hike, the Department of Energy said that they are incapacitated in doing an action to address the spiralling oil price since they only buy from the market, thus admitting the helpless-ness of the Aquino administration towards the di-lemma. The governments “helplessness” as admit-ted, was somehow disappointing and inconsid-erable. So far, since the start of the year 2012, oil firms have implemented only two rounds of oil price rollback, and a grim eight rounds of hikes. Angered by the administration’s alleged “Noynoying” towards the issue, private and pub-lic sectors have expressed their clamors and pro-tests. The one that stands out was the nationwide

transport strike which crippled the transportation systems of the country, resulting to the suspen-sion of classes in most of the private and public schools. Threatened by the possible worst case sce-nario that may soon follow, legislators suggested that the 12 % VAT on oil should be scraped off and at once, it could lower pump prices by P6 - P7 per liter. This was seen as the easy-fix to lessen the burden of Juan dela Cruz. However, Aquino re-fuses saying that revenues are needed to finance educational, infrastractural projects and social services as well. The answers to the impending oil crisis may still be in vague. However, it is theprerogative of the government to look for alternative solutions to temporarily ease out the crisis. Darker gestures as it can be, but it can turned lighter, We can restrain oil demand by harnessing the use of solar, wind and hydo-energy and other available energy re-sources. Helplessness on the crisis is just a myth. R

If the oil price will continuously reach higher marks, darker consequences awaits the Filipinos.

Through ``Its More Fun in the Philippines'' Slogan

Kemuel Joseph M . Bui t i zon

First stop: IT’S MORE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES!

This worldwide trending topic in Twitter and other social networking sites is DOT’s lat-est slogan which aims to invite more tourists to visit the country. The new slogan of the Department of Tourism (It’s more fun in the Philippines) caught on like wild-fire throughout the coun-try. It was pleasant news for a lot of us. The slogan perfectly describes what tourists and balikbayans can expect when they visit our country! It’s a great slogan, great start, and great news looking forward to more tourist arrivals in 2012,” said DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez who is really optimistic about results the slogan would bring the country’s tourism industry. Despite the harassing controversies and criticisms, Malacañang assured the public that the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) slogan and campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” will be implemented. “The gotten response has been very positive. To my knowledge, it has been very positive so we have no problem with the slogan of DOT,” presidential spokesman

Edwin Lacierda told reporters in a press brief-ing. The DOT is being criticized for paying such a large amount when a 1951 “It’s More Fun in Switzerland” advertisement was appar-ently the original. “It’s not a copied slogan. It’s more fun in Switzerland is not a slogan in Switzerland. It’s one of the (ads), if you check the work,” Lacierda said. Lacierda said the ad-vertising campaign would start with the slo-gan. Although many are opposing the said idea, support from Filipinos and tourists all over the world overwhelmed DOT. It has been a very easy thing supporting a cause like this one because of brief blogging sites like Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr (If you happen to don’t have an account in any of them yet, you’re too far behind. LOL) Tweets, post and blogs about how Fun it is in the Philippines flooded the Social Media. Here are some tweets and posts from celebrities and common people alike tes-tifying that indeed, it’s More Fun in the Philip-pines.

OPINION

The Department of Education this year is launching the so-called K+12 program—kindergarten, six years of ele-mentary education, and six years high school - four years of junior high school and two years of senior high. Kindergarten refers to the 5-year old cohort that takes a standardized kinder curriculum. Elementary education re-fers to primary schooling that involves six or seven years of education; meanwhile secondary education refers to high school. Under the K+12, the intention is not just to add two years of schooling but moreimportantly to enhance the basic education curriculum. Amongst South East Asian countries, the Philippines is the only nation with a 10-year basic education cycle. The current basic education is designed to teach a 12-year cur-riculum, yet it is delivered in just 10 years. This quality of education is reflected in the inadequate preparation of high school graduates for the world of work or entrepreneurship or higher education. High school graduates also do not pos-sess the basic competencies or emotional maturity essential for the world of work. About 70.9% of the unemployed are at least high school graduates and 80% of the unemployed are 15-34 years old. While the availability of economic oppor-tunities contributes to this, it also illustrates the mismatch in the labor and education markets. The World Bank Philippines Skills Report in 2009 based on a survey of employers, serious gaps in critical skills of graduates such as problem-solving, initiative and creativity, and, to a lesser extent, gaps in job-specific technical skills. Global employers tended to look at the overall background of job applicants. Missing two years of basic education could spell doom for those who want to live as a professional abroad. In some countries Filipino en-gineers were classified as technicians in spite of their college diplomas because they lacked two years of basic education. The poor quality of basic education is reflected in the low achievement scores of Filipino students. Many students who finish basic education do not possess sufficient mas-tery of basic competencies. One reason is that studes do not get enough instructional time or time on task. The National Achievement Test (NAT) for grade 6 in SY 2009-2010 passing rate is only 69.21%. Although this is already a 24% improve-ment over the SY 2005-2006 passing rate, further reforms are needed to achieve substantial improvement. The NAT for high school is 46.38% in SY 2009-2010, a slight decrease from 47.40% in SY 2008-2009. 3 International tests results like 2003 TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) rank the Philippines 34th out of 38 countries in HS II Math and 43rd out of 46 countries in HS II Science; for grade 4, the Philippines ranked 23rd out of 25 participating countries in both Math and Science. In 2008, even with only the science high schools participating in the Advanced Mathematics cat-egory, the Philippines was ranked lowest. Moreover, the short basic education program affects the human development of the Filipino children. A Filipino is legally a child before he/she turns 18 years old. Psychologists andeducators say that children under 18 are generally not

emotionally prepared for entrepreneurship or employment or higher education disciplines like deciding which course should best to take in college.Pros The goal of the K+12 Basic Education Program is to create a functional basic education system that will produce productive and responsible citizens equipped with the essen-tial competencies and skills for both life-long learning and employment. To the individual, an enhanced curriculum will decongest academic workload. Graduates will possess com-petencies and skills relevant to the job market. They will be prepared for higher education, and they could now be recog-nized abroad. The economy will experience accelerated growth in the long run. The objective of the K+12 program is to improve quality of basic education. Several studies have shown that the improvements in the quality of education will increase GDP growth by as much as 2%. Studies in the UK, India and US show that additional years of schooling also have positive overall impact on society.Cons Sectors question the wisdom of the program given the current resource gaps—lack of classrooms, lack of trained teachers, lack of funding, among many others—and the fail-ure so far to raise the quality of education in general, specifi-cally in science, math and English. Others say the program might be flawed as it is pushed upon legislation on a hurry and might not carefully plan well. As of the parents of students covered by the program, this will definitely another outlays on their pockets consider-ing the expenses of the additional two year schooling, “As far as the curriculum is concerned, DepEd should fix the current subjects instead of adding new ones. The problem is the con-tent, not the length, of basic education. As an editorial put it, we need to have better education, not more education”, said The Philippine Star columnist Isagani Cruz.Assessment The Enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program will be instrumental in achieving the nation’s vision of a high school graduate. The benefits of the program far outweigh the cons. Employing this program does not mean an “addi-tional years” of education. When you look at total number of years, it’s not going to add two years because you include less years in the university and more in basic education. With the present system of learning here in the Philippines, we have to start with good basic education. Without solid basic educa-tion then you are not addressing the problem of unemploy-ment. Parents, as well as critics should view the two more years of basic education as “a worthy investment,” because technically, they don’t have to shell out extra money for tu-ition since the government would appropriate funds for that. It’s not about just producing graduates but produc-ing quality graduates competitive enough to work alongside the globalized economy.

k+12 = Q?

Seeking TruthJuliet P. Respeto

OPINION

There are some students of this institution which somehow had touched our rational minds. For how many years that this publication has ex-isted, for how many years that this publication has catered their needs despite what consequences we (from the publication) have encountered, but after all those years there are still students who don’t know what we’re here for. Yeah, we are a pro-stu-dent publication, however, being such does not mean that we would tolerate the wrong deeds of our fellow students. If we, as students, want uplift-ment then it has to begin within ourselves, isn’t it?.You should know... As student journalist, we search for truth and spread it out according to what really hap-pened. What is included in a particular article is plainly a discretion of the writer and no reader is entitled to accuse any writer for having written such article to which the writer’s name is not men-tioned. The truth that the writer was talking about was on the ground of his capability to defend, based on the facts, the writer had gathered. Yeah, anybody has the right to question the writer for having written stories against the reader’s belief, but it doesn’t mean that the story has no truth at all. And for all concerned individuals, especially, those who have been a part of the story must also develop the kind of understanding that sometimes we need to be reminded that everything a person does is subject to certain limitations and it is our duty to keep it. If it would be possible for us to close the doors that evils may possibly enter then why not do it. I challenge my fellow students to do so.

Radiance Magazine: What is it? The Radiance Magazine covers various in-formation of different approaches. Some have been light for reader’s while others have touched their egos and for such reason, they reacted as if they own the truth only to find out it was just a hearsay. A column, a feature and an editorial are three different forms of article writing. The col-umn, relatively speaks of the writer’s opinion on

a particular issue, based on his judgment and his perception towards the event. Though he presents facts, still, his opinion is his focus. In connection to this, any reader cannot blame the other writer simply because it is his duty to know the truth and publish it while in a feature, the writer only pres-ents facts and lets the readers weigh for themselves on which party does the truth belong. Editorial on the other hand, is similar to the column only that certain individuals who belong to the edito-rial board group their ideas and come up with an article. It is basically the official viewpoint of the Editorial Board and Staff.

Have we not considered you? When the magazine (1st semester) was dis-tributed, we received several feedbacks. Most of these were accusations of being the one who wrote the article. Why, when you told us your demands, when you shared to us the times when you hard-ly exercised your rights, because others never al-lowed you to do so, isn’t that an act of understand-ing? I guess, the excessive expectation you have of us is what turned this whole thing into a mess. Remember, we too, are students like you and thus, mistakes are not far from us. Each one must inculcate this in his mind that every right he is holding, there corresponds a heavy responsibility to keenly observe the limita-tions that are subjected to each of us. We must be careful on the words that may come out from our mouth in a way that it might not hurt persons we encounter.

This is Who We Are We are sensitive to doubtful actions since it is the way which normally leads us to the truth. We never hide the truth even if it means a sacrifice on our part. Though several times we are blamed for other’s actions, we just close our eyes and dis-regard how others treat us, because once and for all we are only doing our job and that is to unveil the truth and let the reader decide and think ob-jectively, despite the horrifying eyes gazing at us. And still, we are who we are.

nagpapasikat o nagsusumikap?

“Gusto mo bang sumikat? O gusto mo lang mag-pasikat? Oo.

Baka wala ng ibang pagkakataon pa, ika nga, “This is our show. This is our time”, atin ng sunggaban. Ikaw magpapasikat ka lang ba o magsusumikap? “Time is gold”, gasgas mang naturingan subalit may katuturan.

FOR LEARNING’S SAKE

OPINION

Partido State University has long been committed to providing academic excellence and quality education. We are one of the high-er educational institutions which carved a his-tory in the academe. For 11 years of existence as a University, we have produced competent graduates in various fields of studies. Through them, we have proved our prowess not just in the local race but in the national race as well. Thelaurels would not be reaped if not for the hard work of our mentors. Indeed, our professors and instructors play an indispensable in facilitat-ing knowledge and learning. They are the molders of our future as well as a paragon of virtue. But as per what the real scoop shows, some of these molders have deformed them-selves. They have tainted the nobility of their profession and some have gone beyond the demarcations of what is considerable and in-considerable. PINPOINTING THE POINT

Student’s voices have been kept in the four corners of the academe. We always prefer to be silent when it comes to grievances and complaints against erring instructors. Behind our silence are various com-punctions filling up our brittle minds, of what could be the possible consequences of our ac-tion towards the problem. Among these are the fears of creating personal conflict with the faculty involved, recieving low marks, even failing the subject entirely, etcetera, etcetera. From these, it can be therefore said that grades serve as bugaboo to the students. Of course, who wants low or failing marks? This is probably the reason for keeping our mouth shut. However, the students must not remain heedless of the irresponsibilty of our supe-riors (if there is any). We should not tolerate them for doing any unrightful act. Besides, we have the rights to be against with them, pro-vided that we have the proper arguments. We have the right to ask for things that we should have and deserve (Learning to be specific.) We should always consider the “sulit principle” which is getting much, more than we pay for.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem in acquiring such. This is hampered by the excessive absences / tardiness of some of the instructors for some unknown and un-explained reasons. Should I consider it as ali-bis? Since some seems to be undecided attend-ing their classes. Our rotten system of attendance is somewhat unfair on the part of students. We are only allowed to incur absences not more than 20 % of the total hours required for the subject. The sanction is failing the subject. How about those instructors incurring more than that of the allowable number of absences for students? Is there any sanction? I believe there is, I have heard about the “No work no pay policy”. Was it properly implemented? Is the attendance of the professors properly monitored?

ZEROING OUT THE PROBLEM

For some students, absences of their in-structors are favorable for they are free to do whatever they want, thus escaping respon-sibilities at home as well as in school. Aside from that, they also have allowances to spend on their personal caprice, etcetera, etcetera. The question for my fellow students, “Nag-kaklase kita para saen?“. On the other hand, some professors and instructors tend to be carefree regarding their noble profession. Yes, teaching is the noblest of all the noble professions that they should not taint its nobility. It is a calling for them that they should be responsible and dedicat-ed. They should prioritize the common good, most especially the learning of their students. Yes, it is true that we are now a college student that we should also be responsible enough. Yes, we could learn by ourselves, but our instructors should understand that learn-ing is a two-way process that we still need mentors to discuss unto us the discourse thor-oughly. Ethics and norms have long been bound-ing our environment. Perhaps, others are just unaware. Please, let us be cognizant of its exis-tence. Be responsible, for fairness, for the sake of learning.

#ItsMoreFunInThePhilippinesBecause

Ramon Jimenez, Secretary, Department of TourismBecause the Filipino people are the best hosts in the world!

IyaVillania, actress/hostThere’s nothing like the Pinoy state of mind. Having grown up in Australia, I remember being amazed the first time I came to Manila, and saw for myself how the people are so warm, friendly, hospitable and have that unique temperament. It’s this rare attitude that enables them to be headstrong to overcome any problems, yet never takes things too seriously so as not to poke fun at themselves and appreciate the lighter side of life. I never saw that anywhere else.

John Prats, actorBecause we’re happy by nature. It shows in our faces, it shows in how we treat others and the whole world. Of course, having all our beautiful tourist spots and rich cultural heritage contributes a lot, but it’s our flair for fun and adventure that makes us always look at the positive side of life.

Vincent Bueno, singer/hostDespite being born and raised in Vienna, Austria, I’m proud to say that I’m 100-percent Pinoy! And after having been away for so long, it just feels so good to return to my roots and rediscover the country’s scenic spots, and bask in the warmth and genuine friendliness of the people. It’s more fun here because I never cease to be amazed by how creative and naturally-talented Pinoys can get with everything — with music, with technol-ogy and popular culture in general. And that makes us look bigger to the rest of the world!

Kaye Tinga, owner, W17Eating! It’s more fun in the Philippines. From the grandest to the simplest homes, whenever there’s a guest, Filipinos always serve food with the line, “Kain na!“ What could be more fun than sharing?

Marilen Faustino-Montenegro, interior decorator, TV hostGetting a one-hour massage for $10 while yaya is watching your baby.

Marilen Concepcion, Pilates instructorIt’s more fun in the Philippines because people are always smiling.

Jo Ann Bitagcol, photographer/modelIt’s more fun in the Philippines because it’s a beautiful, free country with incredible and loving people.

Freida V. Dario, travel writerFilipinos have more fun! Our natural sense of humor keeps our incredible 7,100 islands afloat – through floods and calamities, triumphs and long weekends! Instead of taking ourselves seriously, we seriously take care of each other, our values, our families, and our foreign guests. We can show anyone a great time. In Boracay, for instance, there’s something to enjoy for everyone, and a mélange of interesting local characters who are more than happy to point you in the right direc-tion, engage you in conversation, take you on an adventure to otherwise “secret” getaways, from day to night, till dawn — bring it on.

Tito Glorioso “Maybe we can also have some of these Philippine domestic tourism slogans: Boracay, You Sexy Beach! Haller, Baler! Bohol: Go To Hill! Be Cool, Bicol! Thank you, Camiguin! Maliit-Navotas, Lumalaki! We Fly High In Capiz! Go Gaga In Naga! Kaibigan, Punta Na SaVigan! Virac, You Rock! Kamuning Get Me! Better Leyte Than Never! Whee! Tawi-Tawi! Walang Aayaw Sa Apayao! Maraming Gig Sa Taguig! Bongga Ka Day, Sa Norzagaray! Todong Todo sa Tondo! Hada ng Hada sa Sagada! I wanna dance with Zambales, I wanna feel the heat with Zambales!”

These are only some of the tons of great reasons flooding the World Wide Web on why it is indeed really more fun staying in the Philip-pines than in any parts of the world. How about you? Speak up! Post your Comments on our official Facebook account (www.facebook.com/radianceparsu). Indeed, in promoting what our beautiful country offers, more than the slogan, TV, radio and newspaper ads, it is how we know our country and how proud we are of it that will surely promote Philippine tourism. The best sales associate of the Ph tourism is every proud Fili-pino in and out of the country. Be Proud. Spread the GOOD NEWS! You’re not just a Filipino. YOU ARE A FILIPINO! R

Umiiyak ako, naguguluhan, nanghi-hinayang, nagagalit at nasasaktan.

REAKSYON AT AKSYON

“Noynoying is when you do nothing when in fact you have something to do“ dagdag pa niya. Noynoying assumes “cruel insinua-tion of which the President is not or does possess.” pahayag ni Elinando B. Cinco ng Manila Bulletin.

karatula.

I wish to congratulate the new sets of

student council officers in each department and

campus. And to all who are unaware that we

are already under new student councils admin-

istration: Yes, you’ve read it right; whether you

knew it or not, whether you like it or not.

Caught Unaware Many were caught unaware on

February 21, 2012, Tuesday, from 8:00 in the

morning to 5:00 in the afternoon when the

election took place. Students and teachers alike

were wondering what made some of the more

or less 4,000 student populace of PSU Goa cam-

pus busy. Good for those lucky once who’ve

read the few ‘teeny-tiny’ notices posted in some

inconspicuous areas in the campus about the

Student council elections, bad for those who

didn’t, worse for those who didn’t mind at all.

FSC Fee As early as now, we already deal with

a prototype of the system we are to face after

college once we land a job. Like a typical em-

ployed and earning Filipino citizen mandated

by law to pay taxes, we (students) are required

to pay a high price of 180 pesos every semester

upon enrollment for what we call FSC (Federa-

tion of Student Councils) Fee. This is alongside

with two other fees (Radiance and PFA fee)

we pay separately from the tuition and miscel-

laneous fees. Among the three, FSC fee is the

most costly (In Radiance you pay 40 and in you

pay 90 for the PFA fee).

‘Reacted surprised’ When I first enrolled in the university, I

reacted kind of surprised on how high the FSC

fee is, as compared to the USG(University Stu-

dent Government) fee I was paying for in my

previous school. I asked some fellow students

about this and many seemed to know how high

they were paying and yet don’t care at all. They

were not even wondering where their 180 pesos

go. “I seemed ‘pulubi’ acting shocked about

the ‘180 thingy’”, I thought so I stopped asking.

I reacted surprised not because I can’t afford

to pay for the fee rather because knowing that

my parents do not just pick money up from a

money tree, every cent should be spent wisely.

Therefore, it is just proper to know where my

180 pesos go; besides it’s my right and duty.

Where do 180 go? The FSC fee we pay for is subdivided

to the FSC fund and the fund of every Student

Council in each department. They are supposed

to use this for their projects which will directly

benefit the students. Although part of the sum

they have collected goes to university activities

like Intramurals, other than that, have we seen

any palpable, useful and significant projects? If

you’re still not awaken till this point, try getting

a calculator, key in 1-8-0, press the ‘multiply’

sign, key in 4-0-0-0 (PSU Goa has more or less

4,000 students), press the ‘equals’ sign and you

get 720,000 right in front your two round eyes.

Wake Up! We altogether throw Seven hundred

twenty thousand pesos per semester and that

is ONE MILLION FOUR HUNDRED FOURTY

THOUSAND PESOS a year! Do we spend

1,440,000 Philippine pesos for a simple intra-

murals annually? Now, do we still don’t mind

paying 180 per semester or 360 a year?

‘What do you do?’ I once asked someone after I explained

this thing to him ‘What do you do?’ and he

replied nothing, literally. Now let me ask you

the same question. Don’t tell me ‘nothing’! The

Philippines is the most corrupt country in the

world because we know that the ‘Kabanng

Bayan’ is being robbed and yet most Filipinos

are complacent. Don’t get me wrong, I am not

saying that our Student Council officials are

corrupt. It’s just that we should not miss to ask

and participate. What we are today will deter-

mine what we are tomorrow. The Philippines

will remain on top of the world’s most crooked

countries if we remain confided as if we don’t

care.

An example Let me give you an example. Let’s not go far. Where were you on February 21? What were you doing that day? I bet less than half of the PSU students will say that they participat-ed in the elections. In the Philippines where Democracy is being observed, it is during poll when we exercise our right to delegate our power to rule. The power is actually in us, the people. We only elect officials whom we trust so that there will be national and local leaders. The right to vote is a very vital factor in De-mocracy.

In our case, Student Election is essen-tial. It is the act of delegating our power to the Student Leaders we trust. It should be charac-terized with utmost fairness and transparency on the part of the COMELEC (the incumbent Student Council officials) and 100% partici-pation on the part of the students. The rules, most importantly, should be defined and clear and everyone should spend time know-ing them while the responsible officials exert utmost effort of informing the student-voters.

Failure of Election Although no Failure of Election in any department was declared, I guess if we really are active participants in the said election, in my ‘Dissenting Opinion’, there could have been. As what they say, “Bato-bato sa langit ang tamaan wag magagalit,” I am not pin-pointing anyone. I would just like to write to inform, with faith that the future elections will no longer be the same. The following are some of the explicit mistakes I have observed. The information about the election was not properly disseminated. It should have been one of the major events in the campus but it seemed to be an activity only of a few. Aside from posting few small posters in al-most hidden parts of the campus, responsible persons haven’t made any effort of encour-

aging students to run for positions. In effect, some departments have had no elections since only one candidate per position have filed candidacy.Student-voters knew nothing about the election, in fact many were surprised when told ‘today is the elections’ and many ask ‘election for what?’ Some incumbent officers (who act as the Commission on Election) were forming their own line-ups. Isn’t they are supposed to be non-partisan? Isn’t they should encourage as many students as they can to join the elec-tions rather than having their own ‘Manok’? There were no ‘Miting de Avance’ made in departments that had conducted elections. ‘Miting de Avance’ is a very important part of an election. Since elementary all of us were exposed to student government elections and we all can testify that each election has ‘Miting de Avance’ where student-voters are given the privilege to view and compare the candidates and their platforms. I guess we do not under-stand its relevance and vitality to an election. The election was done in a hurry. There was no enough time for the preparations. The candidates and the COMELEC alike were ob-viously unprepared. Everyone is not prepared. It was as if the election was just a joke over-looking its importance. Again, in my opinion, it was a mess. The election that we had didn’t serve its main purpose. If there were some who are active enough, the authenticity of the election could have been contested. Hello? 1,440,000 pesos is at stake!

I am not writing this for any purpose other than causing change in the most vi-tal event in the Student Government. Let us all act and participate. There’s no room for complacency. We are being trained to be responsible citizens of the Philippines. What we are today will determine what we will be tomorrow. R.

This article is a sequel to the issue “Whether You like It or Not”. The purpose is to answer point by point the different issues raised.

Caught aware

Before the election last February 21, 2012, there was already a Memorandum floated by the Office of student Affairs on January 26, 2012, al-most a month ahead before the student. Election that everyone is already aware of the upcoming activity. Considering the fact that as a student and part of this institution it is also our obligation to become aware and should have the initiative to know various concerns happening inside the University. Notices were also posted on the bul-letin boards not on HIDDEN parts of the Campus. Maybe hidden for those who are not mindful of what was posted on the board. Many were caught aware but acting like they’re not.

Reacted “Surprised“

Yeah, it’s our right and DUTY to know where the payment of 180 pesos go, so that we will not ask anymore where the payment goes. Actually, we should not be surprise about the fees especially when you came from Private school and transferred to a Public University. Obviously there’s a big difference, right? Yes, we have dif-ferent perception. Students no longer wonder and care at all how HIGH the fees because they are much aware where their payment goes and why they pay for it.

Where do 180 go?

It is right that FSC fee is subdivided to the FSC fund to every Student Council in each depart-ment. To clear out the question, the Php 160.00 of 180 goes to the fund of every College/School and the only amount that goes to the Federation is Php 20.00. This small amount is allotted to the fund-ing of the projects of the Federation and for the conduct of various activities. Whether you know it or not, the federation has contributed and had already materialized PALPABLE, USEFUL and SIGNIFICANT projects like the Material Recovery Facility and the renovation of the cottage. Wake up! Get your calculator, press 2-0 then multiply it by 4-0-0-0 (PSU has more or less 4,000 students) press the equal; sign and you get 80,000 right in front of your two round eyes. Wake up! 80,000 per semester and that is 160,000 only in a year- This is the only budget of the Federation. 180.00 do not entirely go to the funds of the FSC and it’s not ONE MILLION FOUR HUNDRED FOURTY THOUSAND PESOS a year! Now, who doesn’t mind where the 180 go?

What do you do?

As students, what do we really need to

do? Nothing? It does not just end with that typi-cal word. It can be interpreted as “I-do-not-have-to-worry”. Yes, worry no more! Simply because the Student Council of each department/campus underwent an evaluation when it comes to the fi-nancial statement being presented to the Screen-ing Committee. And since then the said commit-tee make things regarding the financial statement clear before the tenure ends. After clearing out where does 180 pesos go, do we still have doubts? What can we do?

Failure of Election

Yes, there was no failure of election de-clared in any department because there is actually no problem encountered during the student elec-tion. The insisted ‘problem’ is not actually a prob-lem; only some people are making things compli-cated.

To zero out the conflict let us clear out the alleged mistakes insisted. The information was properly disseminated as the memorandum re-garding the election was floated a month earlier before the activity and we would like to reiterate that announcements were not posted in HIDDEN parts. It was posted on bulletin boards, considered visible to everyone. Posters and announcements were small since the funds have already been consumed to PALPABLE, USEFUL and SIGNIFI-CANT projects of the Council.

Another thing, we really don’t need to encour-age persons to win for a position. If the spirit of leadership is innate to your personality, then, you yourself would volunteer and run for a position.

Also, incumbent officers are not the one’s acting as members of the COMELEC. According to Article VI, Section 4 of the Constitution and By Laws of Federation of Student Council, the COM-ELEC shall be composed of the Dean of Student Affairs and two (2) past Federation Officers as members and not the incumbent officers as indi-cated. Therefore, the COMELEC was non-parti-san.

Furthermore, Miting de Avance was no lon-ger made since the University does no longer want to interrupt the classes which have already been greatly interrupted due to the University activities such as Charter Day Celebration, etcetera, etcetera. Besides, during the room to room campaign, can-didates were already given time for their candi-dacy.

We are not writing this article to create any conflict between the Publication and the FSC. This is only to pinpoint and clarify vague points which have been misunderstood. We are just writing for truth and freedom in the light of democracy whether you know it or not. R

There’s something I remember that I wish I forgot

Now that it’s over and we’ve totally shifted apart

Tears that soaked my pillow hidden behind my eyes

Without anyone seeing how I cried all night

Knowing you is like winning in a lotteryIt just happened and came unexpectedlyBut losing you is a life sudden into misery

Left behind and being cast away

This world seems so unfairLike a dreadful nightmare

That makes people sick and patheticIsn’t perfect and always complicated

We’re a love story gone tragicallyA perfect dream turned into an agonyLike a claptrap that’s hardly spoken

Taking my heart with you to love no more

You’re the person whom should protect me from peril

Who should comfort in time of my sorrowsI hope past can be an oblivious one

That cures aches from its distressing scars

So till our glowing embers of spirit met againWhen our hearts sails back to your heart

After the beauty starts to dieI then believed that nothing is forever.

Hoping for NothingErlin Bradecina

Things are at peace,Seems not to cease. When I’m with thee. And you’re with me.

Happy moments I’ve ever hadLiving my life with your helping hands.Nothing can be comparedto the meaningful experiences we’ve shared.

My life is really completeThrough the joy I felt,And to everyday journey,Here comes the sweetest day.

I thought It wouldn’t be replacedBy tears and grief.I can’t remember even a little mistake,For you to ignore and forget those happy moments.

Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me!... Siguro nakakakiliti kasi yung bata humahagikhik. Pa’no kaya maglaro? Ano ba ‘yun?

Such were the words inscribed in the landmark marker of Dambana ng Kagitin-gan or Shrine of Valor.

If you love to see great views, this is one way to do it. Just make sure you’re not afraid of heights or anything. When you’re at the top, it suddenly feels really, really high, so make sure not to forget to breath and just relax. Appreciate the Shrine, the scenery and history all in one in Bataan.

THE PENINSULA OF BATAAN

Bataan Peninsula is located southwards from the Western shores of Central Luzon, forming the enclosed and well-sheltered Manila Bay to the east that is nearly cut off from the open China Sea in the west. The narrow outlet separates the peninsula from Corregidor Island and Cavite to the South.

HISTORY

Bataan was among the first provinces to rise in revolt against Spanish tyranny. Long before the outbreak of World War II, Bata-an already earned herself a secure place in the history of the Philippines. The prince of Filipino printers, Tomas Pinpin, a native of Abucay, who either authored or co-authored some of the oldest books in the Philippines and printed them himself between 1616 to 1639 in the printing press located inside the Abucay Catholic Church. the USAFFE against the invading Japanese forces brought fame and infamy to Bataan. The loss of life and property cannot be es-timated. Bataan then became the symbol of valor and tenacity in its hopeless stand against the much superior invading Japanese Imperial Forces. Today, a national landmark called the SHRINE OF VALOR (DAMBANA NG KAGITINGAN) stands majestically on top of the Mt. Samat in Pilar as testimony to the gallantry and sacrifices of the men and women who with their blood, tears and sweat made the grounds of Bataan hallow.

Being able to be there in Bataan was already an honor for me. Aside from my cu-riousness, I was anxious to know what this shrine of valor was all about, not even know-ing fully what had happened in Bataan. It was only then, after my visit to Bataan that I truly realized and appreciated what these men have done for the country.

ABOUT MT. SAMAT

Mt. Samat is located in Pilar town of Bataan. While others make it a trip to climb the mountain itself, the mountain is more popular for the Dambana ng Kagitingan or the Shrine of Valor which stands at its peak. The Shrine at the top was built to honor the Filipinos and American soldiers who had fought for the country during the World War II. Standing at 92 meters or 302 ft and located at an area of approximately 74 hectares and at the mountain height of 555 meters of 1821 meters below sea level, the white cross was built in commemoration of the Battle of Bataan in 1942.

If you are a bit of adventurer you may opt to walk the 7 km stretch of road leading up to the Shrine winding uphill or

you may hire a tricycle that charges at least 100 per head. The road going to the shrine really woke up my senses. It was like going on a rollercoaster ride, only longer. The shrine also has a viewing deck within its arms. It is connected to the colon-nade by a zigzag road so you need to do some considerable climbing before you reach the foot of the cross. The cross is built with relief images and embossed figures all throughout the lower part of the cross with images of the country’s heroes, soldiers, civilians and pic-tures reflecting parts of the Bataan history. The doors going into the elevator are also filled with tiny relief images of Rizal in his execution, war images and more.

During our tour, the service elevator was working that time so we’re lucky or else we have to climb the 416-steps staircase all the way up. It holds atleast 10 persons and cost P10 for those who would like to go up into the shrine. There was a long queue of people (student journalists) waiting to go up so we waited for our turn to get accommo-dated. The elevator is tiny so if you’re claus-trophobic that could be a problem. The ride up is only less than a minute but when you are at the top, you will appreciate the view of the Bataan Peninsula.

At the top of the cross (or at least where the arms are), there are two rooms separated by the middle where the elevator rises. The rooms are empty except for some army arti-facts and a chain of chairs to sit onand glance at the beautiful view through the window sills.

The view from the top is just breath-taking and the mountain breeze is so relax-ing. It was a memorable climb and journey over one of the most important historical places of the Philippines. A perfect way to end the day tour. R

Hapihap, pitik, rapado!

Madahom daw su pagkakonstruhir kan satuyang edificio. Mahiwason pati sagkod madahomon. Tibaad pwede pa man gayod ikonsiderar.
