HOUSTON, TXWill Felder fought his way through an elite, open division of 32 players, besting Durango Duran in the finals, 7-0, while David Thomas took care of business in the 50 player amateur division, also overcoming Duran in the amateur finals, 7-4. Felder and Thomas went undefeated to win their first-ever Lone Star Tour event titles.

Ariana’s, along with tour sponsors Poison by Predator Cues www.poisonbilliards.com, Delta-13 Rack www.delta-13.com, Ozone Billiards www.ozonebilliards.com, www.ImproveYourShot.com, and the APA of North Harris County www.facebook.com/apanorthharriscounty, facilitated another successful event for Houston’s thriving pool community. In business for over 33 years, the former “Rose Country Club”, newly reopened and renamed, “Ariana’s”, added a generous $1,500 to the event, and owners Minh and Bill Hammond couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout. Rose Country Club was leased for a period of time when the couple felt they were ready to retire from the bar business, but retirement didn’t last long! Following the lease period, the old Rose Country was closed for a brief time for cleaning and repairs and debuted earlier this year as the all-new, “Ariana’s”, once again under the direction of the Hammond’s.

There were nearly 80 players in attendance this past weekend, May 16th-17th at Ariana’s, hosting its first Lone Star Tour event since 2009. Open division action saw Will Felder defeat John Chang, 9-5, Chuck Farinella, 9-3, Raymond Cardenas, 9-5, and Durango Duran for the hot seat, 9-8. Along the way, Duran bested David Thomas, 9-6, J.J. Manley, 9-0, and Kevin Frauenberger, 9-8. Joey Torres and J.J. Manley teed off on the one loss side with Torres advancing, 7-1. It was Kris Modisette over Tom Welch, and Tim Ramon fell to David Thomas. After a second round

loss to Duran, 9-5, Thomas went on to win 7 consecutive matches, including wins over Frauenberger, 7-3 and Cardenas, 7-5, but coming up short with Duran, 7-2. Duran didn’t last long as Felder took him down, 7-0, to capture his first Lone Star Tour event title.

In the amateur division, David Thomas was on fire with wins over Damion Manning, 7-3, Sam Stony, 7-4, and Raymond Cardenas, 7-2, while Alex Cardenas defeated J.J. Manley, 7-3, Tom Welch, 7-3, and Bob McFerren, 7-1. Thomas overcame A. Cardenas for the hot seat, 7-4. On the one loss side, Jesse Langston eliminated Tom Welch, 5-3, and Kenneth Price ousted Rudy Sanchez. Duran eliminated Sam Stony and it was Lufkin’s Ralph Foy over Danny Bennett. Langston was shut out by Raymond Cardenas, 5-0, and Duran sent McFerren packing, 5-2.

After losing his second match to Ralph Foy, Duran won an incredible 9 consecutive matches before falling to Thomas in the final, 7-4. Congratulations to David Thomas who went undefeated in a stout field of 50 players to secure his first Lone Star Tour event title.

The Lone Star 9-ball bar table event included a side-by-side with the Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour, also sponsored by Delta-13 Rack and the APA of North Harris County. This year the Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour will stage a women’s 9-ball event at each Lone Star Tour stop. The June 20th Gulf Coast Women’s Event has been rescheduled for September 12TH-13TH at Bogies Billiards (3040 FM 1960 E) and it will be a $1,000 added 10-ball event. On Saturday, Loretta Lindgren captured her first regional tour title, besting Teresa Garland in the second set of the true double elimination final, 7-4. Congratulations Loretta! Read the complete article at www.wpba.com and on Facebook/GulfCoastTour.

“Thank you” to Damion Manning, Melvin “Junior” Miller, Chuck Adams, and Mike Fabacher for assisting with tournament duties. Many thanks go out to supporters Toni and Rudy Esteves and their gang from Lufkin, Texas who attended the event; J.B Chapel, Ralph Foy, Kris Modisette, and R.J. Smith.

Congratulations to Gulf Coast ladies Amber Keithley and Ricki Casper who won Poison VX Break/Jump Cues in Saturday’s Poison Cue Raffles.

The next Lone Star Billiards Tour 9-ball event will be June 20th-21st at Bogies Billiards, 3040 FM 1960 E., in Houston, Texas. For more information on the 2015 Lone Star Tour season, visit www.LoneStarBilliardsTour.com. “Like” us on Facebook at Facebook/LoneStarTour.

Skip Maloney - AzB StaffMay 2, 2015COON RAPIDS, MNThe numbers may have been few, but they came from far and wide to compete in the second stop on the North Star Ladies Pool Tour (NSLPT), a $130-added event, hosted by CR’s Sports Bar in Coon Rapids, MN on Saturday, May 2. Drawing 13 competitors from Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, this second stop on the tour was won for the second straight time by 16-year-old Taylor Hansen, who, along with 15-year-old, fourth place finisher April Larson have recently been announced as members of the Atlantic Cup Challenge 2015, scheduled for July in Austria.Hansen, who would give up only two racks in her final three matches, got by Cathy Tschumper twice to claim the title. They met first in the hot seat match, once Hansen had sent Mary Ulmer to the loss side, 7-1 and Tschumper had survived a double hill match versus June Maiers. Hansen shut Tschumper out to claim the hot seat.Moving over, Ulmer ran into Larson, who’d squeaked by Connie O’Heron 7-6 and defeated Molly Nistler 7-3 to reach her. Maiers picked up Beth Fondell, who’d gotten by Cathy McDaniel 7-5 and Brandy Eklof 7-1. Larson advanced to the quarterfinals 7-4 over Ulmer, as Maiers moved to join her with a 7-3 win over Fondell.Maiers and Larson came within a game of double hill in those quarterfinals, but Maiers edged out in front and took it 7-5 for a shot against Tschumper in the semifinals. A double hill battle there sent Tschumper back for a second chance against Hansen.Hansen eased up a bit in the finals. She allowed Tschumper a rack before closing out her second undefeated run on the NSLPT

One thing all pool players do is miss shots. We all miss. Pros miss easy shots, just like the rest of us – just not nearly as often or as badly. In fact, some of the early billiard games eventually became so easy for some players that they had to be abandoned. Missing is what makes the game compelling.

There are many types of misses. Failing to pocket the intended ball in the intended pocket is obviously a miss, but there are also position misses and strategic errors to contend with.

Missing not only costs us games – it’s often embarrassing. We miss shots we “should” be able to make 100 times out of 100. Better players don’t miss as frequently or by as much, but they still suffer the same humiliation because they have greater expectations of themselves.

One old-time road player told me that when he was a teenager learning the game, whenever he missed a makeable shot, he would shoot it in his next practice session until he made it 100 times in a row! This might be a little over the top, but this guy eventually became one of the top road players in the 60’s.

So, we all miss and we all want to miss less. I developed a simple method that helps identify why and how we are missing, on the premise that if I know what my problem is, I have a better chance of being able to fix it.

Here’s the drill: Get a notepad. Put it by your table at home, or use a pocket size pad you can take to the bar or poolroom. Record your next 100 misses. Every time you miss, write down as best you can the type of miss and the deepest truth you can about why you missed. By “type” of miss, I mean physically how and why did you miss? Overcut, undercut, shot too hard, misjudged throw, used

too much english, shot was too difficult, etc. By “why” you missed, I mean psychologically why did you miss? This is harder to get at. Perhaps you missed because you weren’t paying attention, or were intimidated, in a hurry, nervous, thinking about the great shot you just made, knew you were off but didn’t stop, changed aim after you went down, didn’t focus because it was an easy shot, lack of confidence, off balance, distracted, undecided on position plan, etc. – any of a hundred possibilities. This is difficult because it calls for you to admit these errors and shortcomings and write them down.

Please do this practice. You don’t know what you’ll find, but I guarantee you’ll find something useful. In my case, for example, I quickly found that physically I was missing 80% of my shots by undercutting, and most of those were when I was cutting the ball to the left. This can be corrected, but I would not have believed I was off this consistently without this drill to convince me. My position misses tended to be misses on the long side – rolling too far. Also fixable, now that I know that’s my tendency. Psychologically, I found no obvious pattern. I lost concentration here and there, and skipped my pre-shot routine a couple of times. Nothing chronic, but still, helpful to have it pointed out so clearly.

It’s hard to face the truth about our shortcomings. This drill puts it right in your face. If you make the effort to learn about your misses, and then you find ways to improve the things that are holding you back, you have to get better. A big part of excellence at pool is how well you recover from error. Not just the big, missed-the-shot-and-gave-away-the-game errors, but also the ongoing position adjustments, the runs of “bad luck”, your opponent’s good rolls, the equipment faults (“I was robbed by that pocket”), and so on. You’re going to miss. Accept it, study it, learn from it, get a little better. Start today.

TABLE TALK BY: MICHAEL K GLASS

Michael K GlassMichael Glass has been teaching pool for close to 10 years. He is a Recognized PBIA Billiards Instructor, taught by none other than Bob Jewett of the San Francisco Billiard Academy. Michael has been playing pool almost all of his life (except when he was in the Navy — it’s hard to install a pool table on a rocking ship!). He managed to stay away from the hustler life; he doesn’t believe in being dishonest in order to win money. He will, however, occasionally play for a beer or two at the local watering hole. Michael teaches all levels of pool players, from beginner to pro, and works on all aspects of the game, from fundamentals, to pattern play, to trick shots. In January, we talked about how to run a tournament. I’d like to share with you an experience where they did almost everything right. This happened in Vegas, so I hope I’m not breaking any rules by sharing this!I recently had the pleasure of participating in the American CueSports National Championships at the Tropicana in Las Vegas. It was my first time playing in this format, which is very similar to the BCA.When I found out that there were approximately 500 people participating, I thought there was no way it would compare to the BCAPL tournaments I have attended in the past, boasting almost 10 times that number. I imagined a tiny room, frazzled tournament directors trying to keep up with table assignments, poorly maintained tables, and in general just mass confusion and chaos.I couldn’t have been more wrong! The conference rooms that were used were huge, and they had about 120 tables available. All of them were Valley tables, were very well maintained, and were open for practice at any time, as long as you weren’t next to a live match. The walk from my room to the table took no more than 5 minutes. A short elevator trip to the casino floor, a walk down the corridor and down a flight of escalators, and I was there. Anyone who has played in the BCAPL at the Rio (or the Riv before they moved) knows how rough it can be to get to the event from their room: Aurora ran to our room to get my chalk once, and it took her 20 minutes round-trip! As I mentioned in the January article, time management is very important in running a good tournament. The ACS Nationals really impressed me in this respect. I played two events – Men’s 9-ball Singles (121 participants), and Advanced Scotch Doubles (24 teams) with my partner, Shawn Modelo. She also played in the Women’s Senior 8-ball Singles 50+ (20 players).First of all, there were plenty of tables for each round, so you didn’t have to wait for a table to be available in order to play your match. Because they supplied plenty of tables, they were able to schedule every match ahead of time. If I had made it to the finals, I would have known where and when I was playing before the first round even started. This earned points from me immediately. As a person with certain dietary needs, it’s nice to know when I have time to grab a meal, or whether I have time to take a short nap in my room.

The matches were tracked live through compusport (www.compusport.us), and there were plenty of monitors around the venue to check on match results and schedules. This was also available through the web, so people at home could see as well, and players could access it via their smartphones. They even had an app that could notify you of wins/losses, when your match was about to start, and any last minute changes to the schedule. I’m a tech geek, and this was another huge bonus point from me.And this wasn’t the best part! The score sheet itself was printed and placed in a slot corresponding to your table assignment. When your match was up, you grabbed the sheet, met your opponent at the table, and played your match. There was a QR code under each person’s name. The winner of the match would take the score sheet to the tournament desk and scan the code under their name. The computer screen would immediately congratulate you, and display the information about your next match (time, table, and if available, your opponent). My phone would buzz about 2 seconds later, notifying me with this same information. My family back home also got notified that I won, and who I was playing next. Cool stuff! All systems are prone to glitches. $#!& happens, right? Somehow, ACS managed to pull this off without any hiccups (at least, for the time I was there). There were times when I was scheduled to play a Scotch Doubles match at the same time as a 9-ball match, and they handled the conflict very well. My opponent had to wait a bit, unfortunately, but it still went very smoothly.American CueSports, you have my respect and admiration. You truly “get it,” and know how to run a tournament very well. I can only hope that other associations can learn from you, and do as well.I managed a 5/6th win in 9-ball, and Shawn and I took 5/6th in Scotch Doubles as well. I will be playing in the BCAPL tournament in July: Scotch Doubles with Shawn Modelo again, and Men’s Team Open 8-ball. I am very interested to see how their tournament is run this year. And I’m definitely packing my walking shoes!Do you have any suggestions for future articles? Drop me a line at [email protected]. You can also find me hanging out at various pool rooms in the East San Francisco Bay Area. Be sure to say hello if you see me!

PBIA certified instruction is available for all levels from beginners to instructor training.

(A version of this article first appeared in the June 2004 edition of On The Break Magazine.)Draw seems to be the hardest stroke for beginners to learn. A major problem is that it requires you to hit the ball well off center, and lack of chalk or an inaccurate hit can lead to miscues, embarrassment and rejection by your peers, not to mention loss of your lunch money. I’ve seen players tighten into knots whenever they had to pull the rock back.A second problem is that most draw shots need to be struck harder than for other strokes. That’s because the backspin wears off as the ball travels across the cloth, so to get it to arrive with plenty, you have to start it with more than plenty and that takes some power. Also, the cue ball slows down quickly as the draw wears off. It’s important to know that you have to do only two things to get a lot of backspin on the cue ball: hit it hard and hit it low. There are fundamentals that will help this happen more easily, like a straight stroke and a firm bridge. Did I mention that you need to chalk well? There are some who will say that to draw you have to snap your wrist, or jerk the cue back after contact, or lock your wrist, or exaggerate the follow-through, or have a very loose grip, or a tight one, or any number of other bogosities. When you’re listening to such hogwash, it’s best to smile politely and say, “Oh, I’ll have to try that.” Hit the ball low and hard enough and the backspin will be there. You might even humor them and try what they say, but be sure to hit the ball low. One important concept when spinning the cue ball is the “quality” of the spin. This refers to how much spin you get on the cue ball for the amount of speed it has. It’s easy for anyone to get a little draw with a high-speed hit, but much tougher to get a bunch with a relatively soft hit. The diagram shows a drill to work on this aspect. You are not trying to pocket any ball on this shot. Place the object ball about on the line and the cue ball about a foot from it towards the rail. The goal is to shoot the object ball straight up the table and draw the cue ball back to the head cushion without the object ball also hitting the head cushion. You will need “high quality” draw for this shot -- hitting just a little off-center won’t get it.If you can’t do it at first with the object ball that far from the cushion, move it closer so the cue ball doesn’t have as far to travel. Also, you can make it easier by having the cue ball closer to the object ball, but you risk cramping your follow through and learning bad habits. (It’s important to

be able to stop the cue stick quickly for very close draw shots, but that’s not the point of this drill.) Keep

your stick as level as possible -- that’s one of the

fundamentals that will help. Once you have the hang of the shot at a distance that’s comfortable for you, try moving the object ball progressively farther from the cushion, and see how far out you can get it before the shot’s impossible. When you have the draw shot down pretty well, compare it with follow: send the cue ball forward about the same distance. From the position in the diagram, send the cue ball to between the side pockets. I think you’ll find that the object ball doesn’t travel nearly as far and that it’s much easier to get consistent travel on the cue ball.

Pool is a game of ups and downs. Most pool players experience a slump at some time or another. Slumps occur when you play below your expected ability for a prolonged period of time. Most pool players do not know why they are playing bad, so they tend to look for solutions in all the wrong places. Sometimes this causes the player’s performance to drop even more. Often, the player falls deeper and deeper into despair. Pool players are often unable to break fee from the chains of this performance inhibitor because they become tense, think negative thoughts, and develop a negative attitude. The primary key to overcoming a slump it to remain positive! In order to remedy the problem, a player needs to begin by identifying the root cause. The first step should be to determine the type of slump that you are dealing with. Slumps can be either physical or mental in nature. Physical slumps are often result from some sort of change in a player’s fundamentals or mechanics. Slumps that fall into this category can be remedied quickly but require diligence to overcome. When dealing with this type of slump, my suggestion is to video tape yourself and watch your stroke in slow motion. Review the video with your pool coach or someone who is knowledgeable about stroke mechanics. You can even try to identify the problem yourself, but If you are unsure of what to look for you can enroll at Virtual Billiard Academy and receive a complete video analysis for a for a nominal fee. Mental slumps on the other hand can be much more difficult to come out of. The real problem seems to be figuring out what causes them. Mental slumps often originate from some sort of psychological problem. Psychological issues can create a prolonged decrease in performance, and they can also prolong the life of a slump that already exists. It is important to note that slumps can originate from numerous causes, and it is always important to identify anything that might be an underlying cause. Some mental game challenges that can cause or prolong slumps include:• Lack of confidence• Inability to improve• Being uncomfortable at the table• Satisfaction with current ability• Lack of motivation• Too much practice time• Putting pressure on yourself to winHere are some suggestions that will help free you from the bonds of performance slump:Remain focused on the process. Stop worrying about the results. Do not think about how poorly you have been playing. Forget about the past. Do not look at league statistics or previous tournament performances. Instead, focus on shooting one shot at a time.Do not worry about other players or how they perform. The only player you should worry about is yourself. Worrying about other players is often a distraction that can produce negativity, especially when you are in a slump. Remember to focus on your pre-shot process and your performance will start to improve over a period of time.Always remember that it is important to stay motivated and committed that the goals you set for yourself. When you are not playing well, it is easy to begin questioning your expectations. Stay patient and remind yourself why you love to play the game.

When you aim for the center of the cue ball and you’re off to the left it will deflect to the right, if you hit imperfectly to the right, it will deflect to the left......so it will veer off one of two ways. When you favor the left side of the cue ball and hit imperfectly to the left it will still deflect to the right, however, if you hit imperfectly to the right it will not defect to the left (because you’re still just hitting the center, not the other side of the cue ball). So the cue ball will veer in one direction on an imperfect hit, not two. Also, when you favor the right side of the cue ball and hit imperfectly to the right it will defect to the left, however, when a shot is imperfectly hit to the left it won’t defect to the right. So again, it will only defect in one direction on any imperfectly hit shots (I don’t gauge my game on hitting each shot perfectly, this is not possible for most humans). This is very important, because then you can adjust where you hit the pocket by your shot speed, which will give more accurate feedback on missed shots.I calibrate my shots to the center of the pocket, however, using TOI I’m actually aiming at the inside of the pocket.....if it doesn’t deflect I’ll hit the inside of the pocket, if it deflects slightly I’ll hit the center, and if it deflects more I will still hit the outside of the pocket zone.

This isn’t true for the “center ball player,” they don’t truly know why they miss a shot, because their shots can defect right, or left on a shot that’s not perfectly cued. This doesn’t give them the immediate feedback and puts them in a position of guessing why they missed, and at my level I can’t afford to guess......it may cost me the match, money, or tournament. This is how I developed such a finely tuned feel for the pocket. I see the pocket as a zone, and divide it into three parts, this is what I refer to as ‘The 3 Part Pocket System’. This is a powerful shift from how players normally view the game, the pocket and how they see margin of error in shot-making.I was known as one of the most accurate shot-makers in the history of the game, what I’m doing is sharing my technique so that others can benefit. If someone chooses not to listen, or even try what I’m suggesting, it’s entirely up to the individual.I’m the messenger, delivering the message that I learned from many champion players through the years. Without their help I would not have developed a game that has been consistent in both tournament play and high-dollar gambling sessions for many years. For more info, blogs, and free videos check out www.cjwiley.com

Jackie Karol

Jackie Karol (formerly Broadhurst) has been a pool player for as long as she can remember. She was born in Richland, WA and then moved to Philadelphia as a child. In her teen years, when some kids were looking for minimum wage jobs, Jackie was trying to setup money matches in addition to working. From Philadelphia, she moved to Denver, CO and has a degree in Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and supported her pool career along the way as a restaurant/bar owner, consultant, black jack and poker dealer and car salesperson.

After years on both amateur and pro tours and numerous tournament wins including both an 8-Ball and Trick Shot National Championships, Jackie has refocused her talents toward helping others reach their dreams in pool. Moving to Chico, CA in 2010, she provides demonstrations and challenge matches for festivals and fundraisers around the country. Along with her “Angels of Billiards”, Jackie has entertained and won over crowds with her personality, skill and ability to make pool accessible to men and women of all ages.

At the Chico Billiards Academy, she offers private and group lessons as well as structured courses to help people go from beginner to competitive player. She also operates a pro shop and carries cues, cases and many other supplies for both players and pool halls.

Jackie is also heavily involved in the community, participating in Rotary, 20-30 Active Club, Toastmasters, Chamber of Commerce, Young Professionals Association, Eagles, Elks and is the Treasurer of the Noon Exchange Club of Chico.

STUN STROKEOnce your fundamentals are correct and you are shooting with a straight and level cue, you need to master the stun stroke. This shot is the most important shot because it gives you a reference for cue ball positioning.

STRAIGHT-IN STUN STROKEWhen you hit a stun stroke on a straight in shot, it will produce a “stop shot.” In other words, the ball stops as soon as it makes contact with the object ball. Factors that influence this are a blend of the following; cue tip location, force, follow through, and quickness (the amount of time it takes the cue tip to accelerate through the ball).

There are an infinite number of blends of these variables that produce a stop shot. For example, you can use 4”of follow through with a small force OR only 1”of follow through with a large force to produce a stop shot. Play with these variables until you can manipulate each one and still get the same cue ball position. Measure your follow through by placing a ruler beside your cue tip. Then, vary the distance between the balls. Once you’ve mastered a stop

shot with 12” of distance, keep increasing it by another 12”. The more distance you have, the more forward rotation or “high english” the ball picks up before it strikes the object ball. In other words, the greater the distance, the lower you must hit the cue ball to produce a stun/stop shot

STUN STROKE AT AN ANGLE Once again, place the object ball 12” away from the cue ball. But this time, put the cue ball at a 30 degree angle, so that you are aiming at half the ball to pocket it. Use the same stun stroke, and the cue ball will travel straight down the “tangent line.” This is the line that is perpendicular to the object ball at 90 degrees. The harder or quicker you hit the ball, the further it will travel down the line.

This is the first step in predicting cue ball position. DO NOT move on to the next article until you are comfortable shooting Straight-In Stun Shots and Stun Strokes at an Angle at different distances. Be able to alter the variables (cue tip location, force and quickness) and get the same cue ball position.

24th Annual Four Bears

This year would prove to be different yet the same. The venue was changed to Minot, North Dakota some 74 miles from New Town and the Four Bears Casino. The reason - a remodel - so next year the tournament will be held at a virtually new Four Bears Casino.

for the usual suspects there were no big upsets getting to the final 32 in the open division. The calcutta was held before the re-draw on Saturday night. The auctioneer had, to me, an unusual way of auctioning the players. Something I had never seen before. I have been in dozens of player auctions and been to many more. The way it usually goes - you start at say $50, then it goes to $100 - $200 - $300 and so on. What I found so unique, the auctioneer started at $500 or $1,000 and went down or up as the case may be. It worked well. The player auction was just over $20,000. After all the money was collected, the re-draw took place and the last match started at midnight Saturday night.

In the final 32, prohibited favorite SVB past champion, who was matched up with Rory Hendrickson, also a past champion. Rory was shooting lights out and won the match 6-2 putting SVB in the one loss side. And like anyone else, when you’re not shooting good or you’ve lost a tough match, if you’ve been in the situation you can become very

dangerous in that one loss column. Like I have seen Shane many times before, once he gets on a roll he is smooth as silk. His play becomes more focused and he just doesn’t miss. Shane would find himself going through the losers side like a weed whacker tearing up everyone until he ran into the gentleman that put him in the losers bracket, Rory, playing the fourth place match. And Shane would extract revenge and move onto Taylor Anderson for third place.

Taylor is out of the Kansas City area. He had lost his first match on the point against John Morra. Shane would go on to face Morra in the finals. There was a crowd of some 75 interested players and spectators watching the final match. Morra, who had been shooting very well the whole tournament, would feel Shane’s quest and his own agony of defeat in the first set 6-1 or maybe it was 6-2.

In the second set things would be different. It was 8-Ball after all on 7’ tables, a race to six and there were only six games played. The score was 6 to zero Shane Van Boening! Back - to - Back Champion.

On a side note: I heard a rumor and hopefully that’s all it was, that SVB may be retiring in 5 years or so. Tell me that’s not true!

Loretta Lindgren came out firing at this past weekend’s Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour 9-ball Event held May 16th at Ariana’s in Houston, Texas. Lindgren fought her way through a distinguished field of 26 women to capture her first-ever, regional tour victory. Ariana’s, along with tour sponsors Delta-13 Rack www.delta-13.com, and the APA of North Harris County www.facebook.com/apanorthharriscounty, facilitated another successful event for the ladies of the Gulf Coast Tour, with 26 players in attendance competing for over $1,000 in prize money! In business for over 33 years, the former “Rose Country Club”, newly reopened and renamed, “Ariana’s”, added a generous $500 to the event, and owners Minh and Bill Hammond couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout.

On May 16th, 2015, Loretta Lindgren claimed the third stop on this year’s Gulf Coast Tour. Lindgren captured wins over Terri Resendez, 7-3, Diana Cardona, 7-4, Ricki Casper, 7-4, and Liz Mitchel, 7-0, while “Texas Heat” Kim Pierce also made her way through the winners’ side, besting Sara Bork, Jo Losoya, Teresa Garland, 7-5, and Tam Trinh, 7-3. In the hot seat match, Lindgren stole the show, defeating Pierce, 7-3. In the final 8 on the one loss side, it was Casper over Crystal Young, and Esparza over Vasquez, 7-6. Toni Esteves eliminated Bork, 7-4, and it was Garland over Francis Marron by the same score. Casper went on to oust Esparza and Trinh, 7-2, 7-3, while Garland made quick work of Esteves and Mitchel, 7-1, 7-2. Garland overcome Casper, 7-5, and took her revenge on Pierce, 7-2. The finals were a fight to the bitter end. Directly off a four-game winning streak, Garland came out of the gate firing. Her aggressiveness proved difficult for Lindgren the first set, and following a couple of unforced errors, Garland seized the set, 7-5. In overtime, Lindgren found her composition, and even though it was a tight race, she pulled ahead to win the second set of the true, double elimination final, 7-4.

Gulf Coast Tour Director, Kimberly Newsome, was pleased with the turnout. “Our numbers are steadily increasing on the Gulf Coast Tour which is conducive to bigger payouts for our one-day events. In order to grow, we’re fielding brand new players which will enhance our tour, and boost the profile of women’s professional billiards. There is strength in numbers and cohesiveness, and I believe that’s why the Women’s Professional Billiard Association will celebrate its 40th Anniversary in 2016.” The Gulf Coast Tour is one of (13) WPBA Regional Tours across the U.S. For information on producing a regional tour in your area, contact Christy Birk/WPBA, [email protected].

Players, friends, and fans, please note, the June 20th Gulf Coast Women’s Regional Tour Event has been rescheduled for September 12TH-13TH at Bogies Billiards (3040 FM 1960 E) due to a conflict with the OB Cues Ladies Tour. This will be a very special event where $1,000 will be added to the prize fund, and it will be the Gulf Coast’s first $1,000 added, 2-day event. It will be 10-ball, professional rules, played on 8’ tables. A separate press release on this new development is forthcoming.

Alex Pagulayan and Scott Frost worked their way through a star-studded field of 16; a "who's who?" in the game of One Pocket. On the weekend of May 21-24, they played twice at the end, and Pagulayan won them both. The $3,000-added Professional One Pocket event was hosted by Buffalo Billiards, in Metarie, Louisiana and live-streamed by PoolActionTV.

It was a six-match march to the

championship, through a veritable minefield of top-notch, One- Pocket talent. Pagalayun opened up with wins over Joey Gray and Jason Brown to draw Justin Bergman in a winners' side semifinal. Frost, in the meantime, got by Chip Comptonand Mika Immonen to pick up Jeremy Jones. Pagulayan and Frost sent Bergman and Jones to the loss side and squared off to battle for the hot seat. Pagulayan prevailed and Frost moved into the semifinals.

Bergman and Jones moved to the loss side

and picked up Tony Chohan and Justin Hall. Chohan was in the midst of a four-match winning streak that had eliminated Gray, Danny Smith and Cliff Joyner, and now, added Bergman. Hall got to Jones through Corey Deuel and Josh Roberts, before Jones defeated him to join Chohan in the quarterfinals.

Jones took the quarterfinal over Chohan,

but had his three-match jaunt on the loss side stopped by Frost in an epic eight hour match. Pagulayan dominated the final, double elimination match against Frost in a single set to claim the title 5-1.

May 28, 2015 (BEF-Denver, CO): On Saturday, May 16th, the OB Cues Ladies 9-Ball Tour and Slick Willie’s Burnet in Austin, TX welcomed junior players for the 2015 Texas Junior State 9-Ball Championships. Juniors from throughout the state were invited to participate and earn their spot to the Billiard Education Foundation Junior National 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas this coming August, where they will be eligible to qualify for the WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships.

The 14 and under division consisted of Bryan Rodriguez from Edinburg, and brothers Gabriel and Lazaro Martinez from New Braunfels. The 18 and under division was represented by Joey Bourgeois, Jr. from Baytown, Jacob Watson from Tyler, and Senate Horton from Boerne. Due to the intimate field and to increase play time, the players played a round robin race to 5 format to whittle each division to two players, then one final race to 7 set for the title. In the 14 and under division, Lazaro won both of his matches, 5-4 over Bryan and 5-3 over Gabriel to gain entry to the final round. Bryan then won over Gabriel 5-1 to earn his spot beside Lazaro. In the 18 and under division, Joey won 5-1 over Jacob and 5-3 over Senate, while Jacob won 5-1 over Senate to set up the final match between Joey and Jacob.

In the 18 and under division finals, Joey struggled to keep the momentum he had obtained in the round robin stage, and made several unforced errors to let Jacob get ahead early in the match. He continued to struggle throughout the match and Jacob continued to capitalize to take the win with a final score of 7-1.

In the 14 and under division finals, Lazaro showed play on a level much higher than his 8-years of age, executing several multiple ball run-outs to ran away with the match 7-0 against Bryan. Bryan played smart safeties in the match, but each time, Lazaro was able to escape the hook by either a good kick or a well-executed jump shot by Lazaro.

Because of the impressed skills displayed by all six participants, and the funds raised by the community, the ladies decided to sponsor the entry fee for each of the boys to participate at nationals. Congratulations, guys!

All players received prize packages including trophies donated by Rusty’s Billiards, cash, gift cards, and pool related gifts donated by Cristina Tschudi and Mz Tam. In addition to the prize packs for the players, many items were donated to raffle for the players participating in the event. Senate Horton and Jacob Watson won the two Mz Tam Custom Cases. Gabriel Martinez and Jacob won the two Premium cues donated by Omega Billiards. Bryan Gonzalez won the Cue it Up Clip, Lazaro Martinez won the Magic Rack, and Joey Bourgeois, Jr. won a billiard book, all donated by Shayla Neris. Senate also won the Kamui scuffer donated by Cristina Tschudi and Lazaro also

won the Ninja Turtles piggy bank donated by Tara Williams. Also, the third place finishers received photo prize packages from Blake Ormand Photography. You can check out all the awesome action shots by Blake from the event at: http://www.blakeormand.com/Pool-Billiards/2015-Texas-Juniors/

To raise funds for this event, the OB Cues Ladies raffled donated goods from our event contributors. We would like to send a big thank you to all the players and supporters of this event who helped by purchasing raffle tickets – it would not have been possible without player support!

The OB Cues Ladies 9-Ball Tour would also like to thank the following contributors for helping

As of today, May 14, 2015, things are progressing in a timely manner. As we all know, the date that we are all anticipating is July 25, 2015. That is the date that the $75,000 in added money must be accounted for. This is also the added money amount required to be sanctioned as a WPA Tier 2 event. All indications are that this is very doable. At this time Barry Behrman has every hope of securing sponsors who have given every indication that they are on board and want contracts for three more years.I also visited with Bank of America officers in Norfolk to establish check cashing policies. The bank is within walking distance from the Sheraton. They will have enough cash on hand and will be prepared to cash checks up to $5,000 for players presenting proper identification. Arrangements have also been made for players to transact Cashiers Checks and Wire Transfers of U.S. Currency to other countries. The Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel exceeds expectations more than Barry Behrman or I could have hoped for. Maybe he got lucky, I don’t know. What I do know is that the hotel is a wonderful venue with extremely low room rates for us, especially for being in the heart of Norfolk. To reserve hotel rooms, call 757-622-6664. Use code “USOPEN” for the $89 room rate. See your savings by going to sheratonnorfolkwaterside.com to compare the rates for everyone else! The hotel is spacious; plus their food and beverage prices are discounted for this event. The staff is doing everything possible to accommodate this event. The city is planning on having U.S. Open artwork placed on buses and overpasses. This is a big deal for Norfolk, VA.

In the 1960’s, Norfolk was a hotbed for pool as Luther “Wimpy” Lassiter was the man to beat. And in 1976, it was the birthplace of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. We started receiving entry fees and many requests from our foreign friends from Taiwan, Philippines, Nigeria, and Romania for Letters of Invitation to compete in this event. The seating is spread through four undivided convention rooms, similar to the Conference Center in Chesapeake. The TV Arena will be centered in the spacious ballroom. Its wide open space makes seating more manageable and viewable for the attendees. VIP seat reservations for previous VIP ticket holders have begun to sell. VIP seats will be open to the general public on May 22 through ticketfly.com.Go to http://www.usopen9ballchampionships.com/fans.php for ticket purchases. To reserve hotel rooms, call 757-622-6664.To purchase seating tickets, go to http://www.usopen9ballchampionships.com/fans.php.To reserve BCA Hall of Fame Dinner tickets, call 312-341-1110 ext 2004.All entry fees are escrowed by Accu-Stats. Go to accu-Stats.com to pay entry fees. All prize monies will be paid by Accu-Stats. Any questions regarding this report should be directed to Pat Fleming.Phone: 973-838-7089Email: [email protected]
