Sponsor of Racing Promotion Monthly and the RPM Promoters Workshops, K&K Insurance Group, Inc., a subsidiary of Aon PLC (NYSE: AON), was honored May 10 by the Indiana Racing Memorial Association (IRMA) during a dedication ceremony in front of K&K national headquarters. IRMA recognized K&K Insurance as a

significant player in Indiana’s motorsports industry history by placing a marker in front of Fort Wayne headquarters. The Indiana General Assembly and Mayor Tom Henry, in conjunction with the ceremony, issued official proclamations making May 10 (More P6)

The K&K #71 short track car, on loan from the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega

Motor Speedway, was on display at the ceremony. Since its origin as a strictly motorsports insurance provider in 1952, K&K has delivered coverage to tracks, sanctions, and other motorsports groups across the U.S. and Canada. AttentionNEW PROMOTERSRacing Promotion Monthly can be your touchstone as a promotional newcomer. Track operation is a complex business. It has been said that it is at least four businesses for many promoters-- race management, marketing communications, show business, and food and beverage. You will soon be confronted by challenges you did not anticipate, from entrants, employees, sponsors and the community. You’ll be looking for perspective. You’ll look for a sounding board for ideas. When these days arrive, remember RPM can be your resource.

K&K was founded by Nord and Teddi Krauskopf in Fort Wayne to provide insurance products for motorsports participants. Krauskopf’s involvement as a team owner and sponsor gave

him a unique perspective on the coverage needs of the motorsports industry. His dedication to motorsports also resulted in winning the Grand National Championship in 1970; the team was led by legendary driver Bobby Isaac and Crew Chief Harry Hyde.K&K Insurance became involved in the Workshops even before they were branded “RPM Promoters Workshops,” when (More, P9)

Stop Debris: Make sure fencing minimizes the passage of dirt clods and rocks. Consider finer mesh screen along with other netting already in place. Enforce black-flag rules so loose parts do not become airborne. Watch for deflating tires that throw up clods of clay or mud, and pull cars out of races quickly. Consider the health of your fence generally, especially the posts that can corrode from trapped rain water. Check cabling. Are you satisfied with its strength and its ability to contain flying objects--even cars?

MUSINGSLeft Wondering: The thinking behind the story “Tales of Disqualification, Why Sue?” Speedway Illustrated, April 2017 escapes us. It is no more than a self-authored print infomercial by attorney Ken McGuire, Jr., known for his clientele of aggrieved drivers. Good PR Or Cultural Appropriation? When we discovered NBCSN’s “NASCAR America” publicizing WISSOTA/USRA-sanctioned Deer Creek Speedway in their “My Home Track: Fifty Tracks In Fifty Shows” series, we called the Queenslands. Just three business days prior to the air date, we discovered DCS knew nothing of their upcoming notoriety until we shared what we read. The following day, by email, NBCSN contacted them seeking a “few pictures” for the show. NBCSN, on behalf of NASCAR, had been promoing DCS in advance of the airing without Queensland’s prior agreement. Hmm!

Krauskopf joined with RPM founder Stew Reamer, NASCAR Driver and promoter Ned Jarrett, and Hugh Deery, to bring together promoters at the first national promoters’ Workshop in Daytona Beach, FL, in 1972, which soon after morphed into the RPM Promoters Workshops. During this period, Reamer founded Racing Promotion Monthly, and K&K has supported the Workshops and promoters’ newsletter since. K&K, now a unit of

international insurer Aon, became a primary sponsor of the newsletter and Workshops in late ‘80s beginning a remarkable soon-to-be, 30-year, history as underwriter of the publication and Workshops.

IdeaFilePUBLICITY TIPSGuest Authored Stories: Papers, magazines, and websites are hungry for content. City and regional news magazines and websites, business and entertainment sites and pubs, all might consider “stories” pre-packaged. Ask about submitting a guest article. It could showcase your track, a sponsor, a driver, a racing official, support of a good cause. Tailor your pitch to appeal to the editor. Tell them what it will cover and why it will interest their audience. Follow their editorial guidelines. Media despise sales-oriented and long-winded pieces. Strive first for human interest.

The Workshop concludes Tuesday, Feb. 13, not the 14th as published in several recent newsletters. We apologize for any confusion we might have created.

From The RPM Archives: At the 40th RPM Promoters Workshops, Eldora

Speedway’s concession manager, Todd Stucky, offered his insight into best practices for effective and profitable concession management. Here, summarized are his guidelines--as basic and actionable now as five years when presented at the Workshops podium. Choosing Menu: Keep it basic, not too many choices as this can slow down service times. Choose items that are quick and easy to (More, P12)

Q: Workshops’ attorneys advise placement of warning signs at gates. Do the signs protect me from lawsuits?

A: In a word, NO! But it might help. That’s the point. Even though attorneys advise that such signs are a good idea, don’t assume you are protected by them. Some promoters use them, attorneys suggest them, and we illustrate the signs in these pages, in the spirit of the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” In other words, such signs do not excuse a track operator from operating a safe place of public accommodation that conforms to all codes and regulations. The law,

IdeaFileRACE & TECHPenalties: Few infractions require a season, multi-season or lifetime ban. Entrants are your entertainers, and you need them for a show. The best resolution for a repeat violator usually is a temporary suspension. It puts weekly racers in their place, depriving them of what they love to do. Most will return contritely. But suspensions carry the risk that entrants might leave, or that they could sue, so have your procedures and plans buttoned up. Docking entrants’ money doesn’t always solve the problem. Add teeth by taking points as well.

All-Important Refreshment Revenue: At many weekly tracks, it’s the concessions that provide the bottom line. Buying smart, minimizing waste, and offering hot & cold and tasty food and beverage, makes for the best fan experience. (RPM File Photo)

prepare. Less labor-intensive items will help save on labor costs. Choose high-quality items such as whole muscle chicken, and 100% beef. You can charge more for these items and have happier customers.Choosing Suppliers: Look into several suppliers. Full- line suppliers, paper goods suppliers, bread suppliers, chemical suppliers, drink suppliers. Do some research on the suppliers you are interested in. Check on their reliability, service,

product quality, order fill ratio (this is very important in our business as we need our product when we are racing). Once you have chosen a few suppliers to look at, get samples of menu items and pricing. Play the suppliers against each other to keep your cost down. Commodity items like protein items, vegetables, and dairy are low-margin items for these companies. All their pricing will be close. The cost on (More, P14)

That’s why insurers emphasize the importance of proper barriers, debris fences, well-maintained seating, and slip-trip-and-fall-free walkways. Risks are inherent to motorsports, but they must be minimized for everyone involved, especially spectators.

these items will fluctuate through the year. Keep a close eye on your invoices for price changes. Paper goods, chemicals, and cleaning supplies are high- margin items for these companies. This is where you really want to play them against each other. Make sure you are not being taken advantage of in these categories. Once you have chosen your suppliers, it is time to put them to work for you.

Getting Most from Suppliers: A good sales rep will keep an eye on your pricing after it is set and let you know when increases are coming. No one likes to be surprised by increases just showing up on your invoices. Take advantage of manufacturer rebates, sales on items you use. Your sales rep should keep you informed on all these things. Find ways for your suppliers to use your facility to entertain their (More, P16)

RPM extends belated condolences to the Crozier family and colleagues.Rain, Rain, Go Away: If the rain plaguing tracks from the Great Plains to New England would end, we could see whether promoters’ optimism about the 2017 season is justified. However, it would offer little more than reassurance since so many important spring races have already been lost.

PROMOTIONNo More Machismo: Race promotion’s tradition of,"Build it (or book it) and they will come," no longer applies. The business nowadays is no less about promotion, but many newcomers, promote as though fans, like the swallows of Capistrano, will flock back to the stands each spring, Just boast of the big names and they will come. Promotion historically revolved around promoter machismo--having the you-know-whats to risk a big payout, creating the spectacle based on the Dolly Parton purse (More, P16)

customers (a suite package, a ticket, and catering package, etc.) If you are buying private label items, find out who packs those items, and see whether sponsorship dollars are available from them. Before buying equipment, find out what kind of programs your suppliers offer. Some will offer coolers, freezers, coffee makers, pop machines, cheese machines, display cases, etc. These programs can save you money. Usually,

they work on the equipment when it breaks down.Pricing The Menu: A basic way to start is to figure out what food cost percentage you want to maintain. Restaurants try to maintain a food cost percentage between 30% and 35% to be profitable. Once you have decided on a food cost percentage, use this formula to figure out your minimum menu price. Total cost of item, divided by food cost percentage = (More, P17)

IdeaFileMARKETINGHandling Complaints: When customers complain, it’s not personal. Let them vent, and explain the problem. Listen! You can’t fix what you don't understand. Ask questions. When you listen, they realize that you care about their complaint. Once you understand the complaint, apologize, even if you don't agree. Fix their problem, not yours. Don’t defend, as many often do, by talking about your problems. If it’s clear what satisfies them, do it if you can. Dealing with complaints should be an opportunity for change and improvement.

PROMOTION, CONT.That self-image still appeals to drivers turned promoters, but the magic of the purse has waned. Now, short tracks build or sustain their crowds with slow painstaking work. They forsake machismo for attention to promotional detail. They learned that, "If you keep doing what you've always done, you get the results you've always had." Today's time-pressed fans need more compelling reasons to attend. Talk with fans. Find out what they’d like to see, what amenities they seek. Pay close attention to what’s going on in your drawing area, what’s competing and what’s working. Think out of the box. Pay more attention to the fans than the drivers.

minimum menu price. Next, figure out how high of pricing your market can handle. Decide if you want higher pricing, or lower pricing, and make your money on volume. At Eldora, we like to keep our prices lower and be more family friendly.Waste & Shrinkage: Keep clean organized storage areas. Train employees to check in all deliveries. Train employees to rotate all items when putting them away. Train employees on

proper portioning. Train employees not to overcook. Slow down cooking when business trend is slowing down. Watch for theft. The back door can cost you a lot.

IdeaFilePUBLIC ADDRESSWho’s Product Is He Selling? Your announcer should sell your heroes, your races, not others’. Don't let him talk about last night’s TV race. Don't let him talk about his big-league fantasy team. Don't let him wear others’ souvenir apparel. He MUST sell your entertainment above all. If your track is sanctioned by UMP, WISSOTA, DIRTcar, IMCA or others, it’s OK, because such talk adds value to your events. Make him repeatedly use your track slogan. "Welcome ladies and gentlemen to tonight's races at (More, At Right)

MORE PA TIPS, CONT.Eagle Valley Speedway, where the Valley heats up." Talk up the place. Nothing beats repetition.Train your announcer to talk more when no cars are on track than when they are. People can hear him then. So-called “quiet times” are frequently wasted at tracks with music, but it’s also the best time just to chat with the fans. It’s a time to welcome newcomers, to acknowledge frequent visitors, to announce the birth, graduations, honors, accomplishments, or the 80th birthdays of fans or drivers parents or grandparents. It’s a great time build a feeling of “community,” a feeling of belonging to something special among fans and entrants.
