First Race

1. It's a Riddle 2. Zippninthecity 3. Via Alpina

This looks like a now-or-never scenario for ~IT'S A RIDDLE^, a six-start maiden that "should" win this maiden-30 sprint. She moves from the inside to outside, and meets afield without much sprint speed. 'RIDDLE finished in the money all five starts vs. maiden-claiming company, although she lost three times as the favorite. Second-time starter~ZIPPNINTHECITY^ has more upside than the top choice. 'CITY set the pace for nearly five furlongs before tiring in his turf-route career debut, actually not a bad effort. Sheshortens to a sprint, moves to dirt and should be forwardly placed. Her and the top choice are the only apparent front-runners. ~VIA ALPINA^ drops into a maiden-claiming race andswitches to dirt, both for the first time. VIOLENT SPEED also drops, shortens up, and adds blinkers.

Second Race

1. Concord Jet 2. Rineshaft 3. Red Valor

~CONCORD JET^ looks obvious in this bottom-level N2L claiming sprint. Both starts at this class level were creditable in-the-money finishes under pace pressure after breakingfrom inside posts. He moves to the outside, benefits from a tepid pace scenario, and should be tough with a front-running/pace-pressing trip. The past year, trainer Brian Koriner-trained favorites are 15-for-30. ~RINESHAFT^ looms an interesting upset candidate returning to the level at which he finished a better-than-looked third two back after breakingslowly from the rail. RINESHAFT has more speed than he was able to show in either recent start, tab for an odds-beating performance with a forwardly placed trip. ~RED VALOR^missed by two lengths his first try against winners; he should be within range of the pace. TEMPLE KNIGHTS, runner-up last out, will rally late.

Third Race

1. Love Not War 2. Lady Ember 3. Your Royal Coil

Not much depth to this maiden-claiming sprint for Cal-bred fillies and mares. Valentine's Day hunch play ~LOVE NOT WAR^ has more going for her than name and pedigree (damValentine's Babe). 'WAR should improve second start back from a short layoff after an okay comeback in which she pressed and faded. She drops in for a tag, and if she handles dirtcan be gone. This is another sprint without much speed. ~LADY EMBER^ also drops, after a pair of not-great turf routes. In her only start on dirt, in summer 2018, she split the field.The point is, she has run okay on the surface. ~YOUR ROYAL COIL^ returns from a long layoff for a trainer whose last six comebackers off 180 days or more produced two wins,two seconds. CASILLALATER showed some run finishing second in a low-rated debut.

Fourth Race

1. She's Devoted 2. Warrior's Moon 3. Sassyserb

It can be a low-percent trap to wager on a second-time starter stretching out after closing ground in a sprint. But here goes again. ~SHE'S DEVOTED^ overcame a tough trip to winher debut like a filly with much potential; her Cal-bred allowance rivals in this turf mile are only average. 'DEVOTED steadied and lost position soon after the start in her sprintdebut, then circled the field and was up on the wire. Sharp win by a filly bred to run long. ~WARRIOR'S MOON^ is an enigma. Her third-place finish last out looks good on paper,but the truth is she got a dream trip even after breaking from post 12. Of course, that was a stakes and now she drops into an entry-level allowance, so criticism is probably unfair.Bottom line: the in-form filly is a legit contender in good form, and both starts on this course were good. She has something the top choice lacks, which is experience around twoturns. ~SASSYSERB^ dominated a soft bunch of maidens despite a final quarter-mile in 25.14 seconds. By contrast, CALIFORNIA KOOK finished in 23.64 seconds when fourth inthe Cal Cup Oaks.

Fifth Race

1. Miss Megan 2. Lippy 3. Time for Ebby

~MISS MEGAN^ should handle this Cal-bred allowance sprint as she drops in class from a productive open (not Cal-bred) entry-level allowance at Golden Gate. The one-threefinishers from that race returned with fast runner-up finishes next out; the last-place finisher returned to win a claiming sprint. The point is, MISS MEGAN ran well against goodcompany. She pressed the pace, hung tough into the lane, tired and split the field. Good effort. The last time she raced on dirt, in September at Del Mar, she won by more than 12lengths. ~LIPPY^ drops from a series of Cal-bred stakes into a first-level statebred allowance. She won a stakes race as a 2yo, therefore is entered here for the optional $20k claimtag. ~TIME FOR EBBY^ figures as one of the favorites off her runner-up finish last out under similar circumstances.

Sixth Race

1. Hootie 2. Roaring Fork 3. Lifeline

~HOOTIE^ is a tough horse to handle, the hard-pulling gelding repeatedly finds himself in trouble. However, based on his N2L win two back for a $25k claim tag, HOOTIE getsthe call to win this N3L $35k claiming turf route. He won that race by more than two lengths over a field that included three next-out winners. Assuming his dirt race last out can bedisregarded, and assuming he reproduces his turf victory when ridden for the first time by the meet's leading turf rider Umberto Rispoli, HOOTIE can win. Longshot front-runner~ROARING FORK^ has an upset chance. He was claimed for $16k from a runner-up sprint, stretches out, adds blinkers and switches to a five-pound apprentice rider. Come andcatch him at a price? ~LIFELINE^ returns from a four-month freshening with races against open claiming company that put him in the hunt vs. N3L claiming company. EROTICstretches out to his preferred two-turn trip. HOLY GHOST ran races last year that put him in the hunt. Deep race.

Seventh Race

1. First Star 2. Der Lu 3. Starr of Quality

~FIRST STAR^ should start at a short price as she stretches out and drops to second-level allowance after a better-than-looked effort the G1 La Brea. FIRST STAR raced insideand among rivals in that sprint, and finished willingly for fourth. Two turns is what she wants, this race could set her up for the G1 Beholder Mile on March 14. ~DER LU^ gaveQueen Bee to You fits last out in a G3 route, runner-up by a nose. That was a career-best effort by DER LU, who figures to set or press easy fractions in this small field ~STARR OF

QUALITY^, scratched from the aforementioned G3, finished in the money both recent starts at this N2X class level. She is a six-time winner, all at Santa Anita, her four rivals thisrace combined to win total of eight races.

Eighth Race

1. Oh Pretty Woman 2. Too Hot for Curlin 3. Dance Costume

Wide-open maiden race for Cal-bred fillies and mares, ~OH PRETTY WOMAN^ gets the call following a solid third-place comeback in which she rallied from next to last, finishedin less than 24 seconds, and missed by only a half-length. Second start back, tepid choice. ~TOO HOT FOR CURLIN^ has an upset chance. She was a short filly with a sporadicwork pattern into her eighth-place comeback last month, but has worked regularly in recent weeks and ran well last summer and fall against similar. In other words, she is a betterfilly than she showed last time. ~DANCE COSTUME^ finished well for second in a promising debut at five and a half. She is bred for this longer distance. HOT MAGISTRATEcould be loose on the lead. Her most recent start was actually okay, she meets less speed this time and could get brave. However, with the rails at 30 feet, turf-mile pacesetters thismeet have won only one of 10.
