Expert AnalysisBy Brad Free

BEST BET: Octopus (4th race)

First Race

1. Risen Lady 2. Tetragonal 3. Styledome

A shortage of genuine speed in this turf mile benefits ~RISEN LADY^, wire-to-wire winner two and three starts back. She did not get the same front-running trip last out in a stakesrace at Golden Gate, and merely split the field. Now she drops in class, gets in light with the five-pound apprentice, and is likely to use her speed. If 'LADY makes the lead andgets comfortable, she could be gone. ~TETRAGONAL^, stakes-placed last year, can improve after she misfired in her comeback. She did have trouble and was shuffled on the farturn, but offered little late. Disappointing comeback, actually. But she improved second start back last year, perhaps she will do likewise this year while dropping from G3 to N1Xand switching to the meet's top rider. ~STYLEDOME^ finished third by a length last out in the same race the top choice finished sixth in. STYLEDOME fits if she can transfer hersynthetic form to turf. THRUMPS DREAM makes her U.S. debut after winning a 14-horse maiden field in her final start in Ireland.

Second Race

1. As Time Goes By 2. Ce Ce 3. Miss Stormy D

Bob Baffert-trained ~AS TIME GOES BY^ is likely to start at a short price in this G2, based on her runner-up two back in a G1, followed last out by a nine-length romp in a G2. Shehas tactical speed, she is fastest in the field on numbers, and stands out. Michael McCarthy-trained ~CE CE^, two-time G1 winner last year who scored a sharp win in her comebacksprint, could give the top choice a battle based on her form last year and her winning comeback. However, she is not a confirmed starter. Her options include the G1 Ogden Phipps onJune 5 at Belmont. ~MISS STORMY D^ is a longshot threat on the front end. She set a fast sprint pace last out and held second behind CE CE. The longer distance of this mile and asixteenth race means MISS STORMY D can set the pace at a slower tempo. Longshot pace play? THIS TEA and LAST FIRST KISS also entered.

Third Race

1. Honey Jar 2. Feathers 3. Nimbostratus

~HONEY JAR^ dusted maidens last out, like a filly that can step up and handle a N1X; ~FEATHERS^ returns from a layoff adding blinkers and Lasix. They are the must-useprincipals in this turf sprint. The maiden field HONEY JAR defeated was dubious (runner-up ran third next out, three others off the board next out). However, the win by more thanthree lengths was decisive, 'JAR has speed and also can finish. Good trip forthcoming, pressing the pace outside. Her new rider is Umberto Rispoli, as Flavien Prat jumps from 'JARto FEATHERS. The latter showed promise two starts last summer in England, then misfired in a tough stakes race in her U.S. debut against males. The San Luis Rey Downs-basedfilly appears to have trained very well for her comeback. Ready to fire. ~NIMBOSTRATUS^ already won this N1X condition two back, then found two turns too far in a G3. Shedrops back to the level she won at, while entered for the optional $150k claim tag. Off-the-pace contender.

Fourth Race

1. Octopus 2. Black Storm 3. Satchel de Ritches

For the second straight race, ~OCTOPUS^ merits "best bet" status. It turns out he was in tough last time in his third-place comeback, a race dominated by lower-odds stablemateNotre Dame. OCTOPUS drops from $25k claiming starter back to the $16k claiming level at which he won and was claimed two back. Drawn outside his pace rivals, with the topfigures, he looks tough to beat. ~BLACK STORM^ will rally late, as usual. Although this level might be a reach for the $10-12.5k claiming veteran, his current form is solid and heis a six-time winner on this track. The veteran win type is reliable for an honest come-from-behind finish. ~SATCHEL DE RITCHES^ stumbled and misfired in the same race the topchoice exits. Class drop makes sense, though OCTOPUS has defeated him multiple times. ESKIMO ROSES is a Los Alamitos nighttime specialist with speed. He might be the oneto catch.

Fifth Race

1. Lookintogeteven 2. Cinnte Winnte 3. La Gioiosa

~LOOKINTOGETEVEN^ and ~CINNTE WINNTE^, second and fourth last out, both with trouble, get top billing in this maiden turf mile. LOOKINTOGETEVEN ran the best raceof her 12-start career last time in her first since changing trainers to Phil D'Amato. She hit heavy traffic on the far turn, steadied at the quarter pole, then finished super. With a cleantrip, she could have won. Prat stays up, 13th time the charm? CINNTE WINNTE has had fewer chances, which is good. The well-regarded Irish import walked out of gate in her U.S.debut, was hard-held in traffic on the backstretch and far turn, then sputtered. Okay comeback, improvement likely. She was ridden last time by Rispoli, who jumps to trainer PaddyGallagher's other starter. She is ~LA GIOIOSA^, the class of this maiden field. She "won" a race last year in France but was disqualified, finished second next out a G3, then waswell-supported finishing off the board in a G1. Based on company she kept last year, she certainly fits with U.S. maidens. MISS BELLA CIAO did not have a clean trip in her fourth-place comeback. Suspect she might want farther than this mile distance, however.

Sixth Race

1. Vaporized 2. Queen's Code 3. Head for Business

First-time starter ~VAPORIZED^ has shown sufficient run in morning works to suggest he can fire in his debut. He worked in company May 10 with maiden winner/Friday race-7allowance entrant Cibertruck, and posted a decent gate work May 17 in company with an unraced maiden (works viewed online). Trainer Kristin Mulhall won with 3 of her last 12first-time starters. ~QUEEN'S CODE^ is best of the four entrants with racing experience. Third or fourth each of his three starts, he had trouble two of those, and returns from athree-month break. Look for him to rally late. ~HEAD FOR BUSINESS^ flashed surprising speed in his debut on turf. He adds blinkers, moves to dirt and will be involved early.GONE SOMEWHERE lands the leading rider for his debut, although this stable is not known for winning with first-time starters.

Seventh Race

1. Going Global 2. Madone 3. Pizzazz

Page 5: Racing Data Provided by the Daily Racing Form propickSA

California's top 3yo turf filly with three straight stakes wins, ~GOING GLOBAL^ faces a new challenge from California's top 2yo turf filly last year. She is ~MADONE^, three-timestakes winner including a sharp recent comeback. While the top two both are qualified for this G3, GOING GLOBAL has something her rival does not. That is, proven form at thismile and one-eighth trip. She scored a sharp win two months ago at the distance, racing her final three furlongs in a quick 34.79 seconds to win a G3. 'GLOBAL trained super since. But MADONE is no pushover. She is four-for-four in California, her only loss in five career starts was a midpack finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Her comeback winwas the G3 Senorita at one mile. For what it is worth, MADONE defeated Closing Remarks by a length and a half, whereas GOING GLOBAL defeated Closing Remarks by only aneck. Close call between two good fillies. ~PIZZAZZ^ returned to form last out by winning the California Oaks on synthetic; stakes winner QUATTROELLE will be rolling late.

Eighth Race

1. Shotgun Rider 2. Revisionist 3. Poseidon's Kid

Last-out runner-up ~SHOTGUN RIDER^ is obvious in this Cal-bred maiden-50. Despite not breaking well from inside posts two recent starts, he ran well each time. Now he movesto the outside box where he can race in the clear and wear down whatever speed happens to materialize. ~REVISIONIST^ appears to have trained okay for his debut; he is a siblingto Cal-bred stakes winner Club Aspen. REVISIONIST would be the first progeny of Tamarando to win first out (10 starters, per Daily Racing Form database). First-time starter~POSEIDON'S KID^ is a must-use for the D'Amato-Jessica Pyfer combo. The gelding's works look okay. COUSIN EDDIE ran okay in his third-place comeback, from an outsidepost. Now he is buried on the rail. Not sure if he is quick enough to establish position from the fence.

Ninth Race

1. D's Lovely Sophia 2. Warrior's Moon 3. Rain Diva

A wide-open Cal-bred allowance turf sprint ends the card; this race could go a number of ways. The call is ~D'S LOVELY SOPHIA^, who outran her odds when second across thewire (disqualified and placed last) last out. That was her first start in five months. Although she set the pace in her comeback, she also ran well rallying from behind on this courselast fall. There is plenty of speed in this race; 'SOPHIA can be forwardly placed or run from off. ~WARRIOR'S MOON^ was only prepping in her comeback on dirt. She prefers turf, goes route to sprint in a speed-filled field, and is reunited with the only rider she won under (Prat). Look for her late. ~RAIN DIVA^ won this condition last out on dirt, she retainseligibility moving to turf. She is one of several speeds. SQUARED SHADY has proven form over this turf course and figures as a contender, while GO SMILEY GO also has runrecent races on synthetic that make her a contender here. Deep, deep field.
