My brief as to use an idea of a map to visually represent my journey to and fro university. I also had to consider less tangible ways of tracking down my journey; taking notice of things I wouldn’t usually notice. There was no size restriction and i had 2 weeks for this project.

MY JOURNEY HOME4

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

Page 6: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

One of my ideas that came form my mind map is the measurements of my heart rate to university. This would be a representation of my journey home. I would presume that it would start of steady but then fasten as I’m on a time scale. i would not have realised how long it took me to walk so when i look at my phone, i will pick up the pace.

Although during my tutorial, other people noticed that it would be hard to measure because I don’t have the equipment to measure my heart rate. This will be inappropriate idea as it is not realistic.

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

I was interested in the tube map because i liked how each colour represented a different line, similarly like a key. i was thinking of having certain objects in different colours so the audience could follow my journey to university. i would create a key for them to understand my map.

This is a mind map of what things/object I will come across quite frequently on my journey.

7

Page 8: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

This is a brief sketch of what my outcome might be. I have chosen to use street lamps, bus stops and roundabouts to illustrate my journey home.

I did a walk to university ans did a tally chart of how many times I saw each object. i sometimes see friends I know on the way to my journey so I decided to do that onto my map.

DEVELOPMENT8

Page 9: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

This is the first time i am using Illustrator, Eden beginners class helped me develop a basic skill on the program. I gave putting down my allocated shapes into place. Most of my journey is straight but it was difficult for me to put that on a page so i split it up, making it look more like a journey but not accurate.

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

9

Page 10: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

To experiment, I change the orientation to portrait because I thought i could fit more of my shapes on one line to demonstrate that my journey is a straight one. Although, this didn’t work so I decided to change it back.

DESIGNS10

Page 11: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

Having chosen to display my journey home landscape, i decided to play with the background. I found my map was bland and needed some colour. I chose green because most of my walk is greenery. there was no reason why I chose to use rectangles and thought it wasn’t necessary to have it so i decided to not have a background.

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

11

Page 12: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

This is my final piece for my journey home. I needed to show my audience a journey and an end so I add the start and finish of my journey. I also added a dashed line for them to follow my path.

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

One of my strengths are that it has a key so my audience can read my journey and be able to understand it. It is also a good scale to read.

Although on the other hand, there is no particular reasons why i chose these certain shapes. I chose circles to illustrate roundabouts because that is their shape but there is no reason why I chose rectangles for traffic lights. I chose a smiley face because when I see my friends I will acknowledge them with a smile.

Having my journey landscape made my map more spread out which made it look more even. However, it doesn’t truly show my journey home because it is not accurate to my walk. This means it is unreliable because if someone had to do my walk to university, they will get lost. Although, this means this map is personal to me because only I know the way to university.

If I had to redo this idea, i would research into colour psychology because the colours I used are meaningless. I should also look into typography. I haven’t used much text but it is important to have the right text.

13

Page 14: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

This is my second idea which i also developed into a final outcome.

I had a interest in how the solar system showed us the journey of the planets. The distance between each planets differ and the size accompanies the width. Each planet can be assigned a place or a stop in my journey to university.

I looked at a book called Story of the Solar System which gives me information about each planets.

IDEA GENERATION14

Page 15: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

i know there are 8 planets in the solar system so i was suggesting to have 8 places/stops on my journey. For example, towns like Winton, Charminister and Lanswdowne.

I also suggested i would take a photo of what in front of me every 5 minutes because it takes 45 minutes to walk to university so in the end I would have 8 different photos.

During my tutorial, i presented my idea and someone suggested to do a circular panoramic photo so they look like planets. I would now take several pictures every time I stop so create a panorama.

15

Page 16: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

I chose the sun to be university because it is the centre of my universe. I have just started university so the sun would be the most significant thing at the moment.

IDEA GENERATION16

Page 17: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

Here is the first circular panoramic photo i did on Photoshop. i took 3 photo when i stopped, front, left and right. I merged the photos together to create a straight panorama. To create my circular panorama, i used an effect called polar coordinates in the filter bar.

DEVELOPMENT 17

Page 18: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

A problem i see during my project is that because my walk has so much greenery most of my circular panorama look similar, thus showing no difference between each stop.

18

Page 19: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

MY

JOURNEY

HOME

This is my finalised outcome of my journey. 8 planets equals 8 panorama.

FINAL DESIGN 19

Page 20: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

After creating 2 outcomes of my journey home, i made a decision that my planet idea is a lot more original.

Although, there are some improvements i could have done such as the sizes of the planets. The size varies in size but there is no reason for this. I should have looked at size of the planets in our solar system.

I should have looked at typography. There very little text but could have presented it differently and found the right typeface.

The dashed line becomes a guide for the audience, giving a clear journey throughout.

LIFE AND DEATH

I had to visually reinterpret 2 images to appear at the back of a lorry. The left must represent life and the right represents death. I had to use Adobe Illustrator and had to design my own lorry/trace the template given.

22

Page 23: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

LIFE

&

DEATH

A quick brain storm of ideas after having a lecture about life and death. Some are more obvious than others, i wanted to do something less obvious and more thoughtful.

One of my idea was something to do with Ebola. I found this is a good idea because it was current to today’s world. it was relevant to my project and the news.

23

Page 24: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

Here are my quick thumbnails that i did. During my lectures, we were asked to visualise the 2 doors together and not separate parts. Amanda wanted us to intersect each other, i tried doing this with the lungs.

IDEA GENERATION24

Page 25: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

Learning Illustrator from my weekly workshops are developed and challenged my skills on replicating a lorry.

LIFE

&

DEATH

25

Page 26: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

Another thumbnail i did and actually developed was my raven and dove. I wanted to play with negative spacing so having a contrast with black and white.

Personally I found that it wasn’t as effective as i thought it would be. It looked plain to me.

DEVELOPMENT26

Page 27: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

During my tutorial, i got asked to develop the dove and raven and the snake and the handbag.

In my tutorial, they didn’t like the fact it was a cartoon drawing. I decided to make it slightly more harder to figure out and only showed what companies like Burberry use which is the skin on the snake.

I imitated the logo of Burberry for my audience to visually recognise it. Burberry had strong, bold and silver logo as their branding.

LIFE

&

DEATH

27

Page 28: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

I did a couple of experimental examples of my snake and handbag. i copied my snake scales over onto my handbag in smaller scales which then created a repetitive pattern.

I was indecisive to keep the text because it labelled the bag and also scrutinises the company.

EXPERIMENTATION28

Page 29: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

In my pin-up critique, they suggested to get rid of the text or perhaps place it on the car number plate. i thought this was a good idea because it makes the audience look at the whole lorry.

If i had to add to my work, i would try make my snake scale look more realistic, at the moment its looks flat. I would also fill in my lorry so my images stand out more.

LIFE

&

DEATH

29

Page 30: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

I thought my colours for my snake was realistic. I did start off by using a green palette but realised most snake skin bags are of a darker colour. The colour seemed to be right but at limitation would be the flatness of the animal. I would have liked to improved it by making it look 3D.

It makes you think about animal creulty and the warfare of the animals. The injustice of companies like Burberry.

I would have liekd to fill in the lorry so my images stand out more. at the moment, the blankness and white seems to bring the images back.

I had to visually communicate to a target audience and I had to clearly show what I wanted to say and who I want to say it to. Having to choose 1 our of 3 articles, I chose to do about global wealth, the rich and poor. The final piece has to fit through a letterbox and I have to chose evidence of Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

This is my annotations for article 3 which is about the rich, poor and global wealth. i found highlighting key words and quotations useful because it help me summarise it in my own words.

The richest 1% of the worlds population are getting weather, owning more than 48% of global wealth. The report states that the growing inequality could be a trigger for a recession.

“… The bottom half of the global population own less than 1% of total wealth. In contrast, the richest decile hold 87% of the world’s wealth” said the annual report.

Total global wealth has grown to $263tn - more than twice as much back in 2000. The UK was the only county in the G7 to have recorded rising inequality in the 21st century.

Anti-poverty campaigners Oxfam which published research showing that the richest 85 people across the globe share a combined wealth of £1tn, as much as the poorest 3.5bn of the world’s population.

“These figures shows inequality is extreme and growing and economic recovery following the financial crisis has been

Research

skewed in favour of the wealthiest. For poor countries, this means the difference between children getting the chance to go school and sick people getting life saving medicines.” said Oxfam’s head of inequality Emma Seery.

“In the UK, successive governments have failed to get to grips with rising inequality. Report shows that those least able to afford it have paid the price of the financial crisis whilst more wealth has flooded into the coffers of the very richest.”

The $20.1tn rise in global wealth over the past year is the largest recoded since 2007. The total has risen every year since 2008 and is now 20% above its pre-crisis peak.

Thomas Piketty pointed out that while inequality has increased in many countries outside the G7.

The Credit Suisse team showed that overall wealth in the US has grown at a faster pace than incomes. Warn of recession.

36 SUMMARY OF ARTICLE 3

Page 37: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

THROUGH

THE

LETTERBOX

“... the wealth income ratio has typically fallen in a narrow interval between 4 and 5. However, the ratio is now a high level of 6.5 which matched the great Depression. This is a worrying signalled given that abnormally high wealth income ratios have always signalled recession in the past.” The report said.

37

Page 38: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

Looking at the article and the quotes within the text, i pick up on the G7. I didn’t know what or who they were so it stood out for me.

The concept of this was that as the leaflet got long the difference between “the rest“ and the G7 became further away, symbolising the inequality.

There wasn’t much to say with this concept though. I didn’t know what i wanted to show to my audeicne.

I used box of broadcasts (bob) to do my research. I looked into tax avoidance and what is association with it. I found there have be speculations that companies such as Google have avoided in paying tax. This let me into a woman called Margaret Hodge which led to me The Cup Trust.

Looking into tax, I found an interest in where our money went after we paid tax. Many people don’t actually know the breakdown so i am going to inform people through the post where it is going.

I will focus on the middle class as that where the majority lies. I research into it and found the an average salary for someone who is middle class is £25,500 and the tax payment is £5,825.

I looked into the size of the notes to i can make it as accurate as possible. Although, it wont be realistic because i will make it look like fake money.

I also looked into the size of the letterbox.

Here is a quick sketch of what i hopefully will achieve. At the front will have the amount given to each section of the tax breakdown.

At the back will have where that amount will be situated too.

46 DEVELOPMENT

Page 47: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

THROUGH

THE

LETTERBOXI will have a band to hold the

money. There will be notes representing different amounts and different sections of where the tax money goes.

During my tutorial, I presented my work as if the money is meant to be disappeared. a metaphor of our tax money.

One suggested i should print it on toilet paper as a way to show our money is thrown away.

I couldn’t print/doesn’t want to risk printing on toilet paper. i had to substitute to bible paper.

Personally I found the concept quite clever but I found I didn’t make it clear what I wanted to say. I wanted to show my audience that tax is bad and that it is not fair how we give tax but don’t exactly know where it is going. I could have worked on that more.

I accomplished one of my aims which was not to make the money look real. If it looked real then it would look valuable and significant. I wanted the money to represent the uselessness of where our tax money is going.

The material used was meant to be toilet paper but the ink would just run. I have a good substitute, which was to use bible paper. its thin and weak similar to toiler paper.

i liked how I haven’t given them a lot of information so if they wanted to find out more, there was a website. The website would allow them to enter their salary and the website will generate how much you would be taxed and where it is going.

49

Page 50: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

We went to an exhibition called Disobedient Objects at the Victoria and Albert museum. I found it interesting and different. Mostly focusing on political issues of the world.

The one I found most intriguing was the protests in Iraq, starting a social change to stand up for rights. I learnt that graphics isn’t making something look ‘nice’; to make the most impact on the audience is to make change/difference/inform.

50

GALLERY

VISIT

I went to the Museum of Design in Plastics to look at 3D art.

This reminded me of the lecture with Kristen called The Power of Wow. Items that are peculiar and different. For example, the Coke Cola had holes at the top which could be used for salt or pepper. It could even be used for sharing a can of drink so you can use multiple straws.

51

Page 52: Rachel Ta Introductory Studies

Out of interest, I went to the gallery in AUB called The Dark Highway by Paul Wenham-Clarke.

The above photos show a dead bird, which aided me to design my dove and raven example of life and death.

52

GALLERY

VISIT

I like the top left picture because it shows the speed of the vehicles. The blue effect connotes how fast the cars are going.

The picture below is very dramatic. The scare that is felt when you look at the smashed car, broken glass and the blood.

Overall, the gallery opened my mind to my projects, especially life and death.

PERFECT BOOK BINDING

This is evidence of my perfect book binding. This was helpful and great prewparation for my display book.

METHOD1. Check paper grain 2. Trim paper so that the spine edge is perfectly straight/flat.3. Add at least 2 extra leaves of paper to each side of book block.4. Place into bind press, spine down.5. Glue from both directions.6. Leave glue to dry in press.7. Remove from press, discard extra ‘pages‘, cut in notches for thread.8. Apply thread in loop down spine.
