Rachel Lindsey Clark and Vic Bateman are partners in life. As artists they have followed distinct and seperate paths. Rachel Lindsey Clark came to prominence as a printmaker, specializing in Dry-point and Lithography, with a commitment to working directly from life. She also works in a variety of media, including collage and ceramics, making portrait heads, which she describes as: “Drawing with clay”. Vic Bateman is best known for his large colour loaded abstract paintings, informed by recollections of visual experiences often using repetition of marks and shapes. Their work is very different, but they share a belief both in the importance of process, and in the ‘object quality’ of a work of art. A piece of art is more than an image on a surface.This show is the first joint venture they have launched, inspired by the fact that they have both been exploring new directions, extending their vocabulary of visual languageThe Exhibition is not a showcase of their work. It is a juxtaposition of images and objects utilising various media, provoking many questions.
It is a show, an installation, an event, where, as the works engage with each other they form an edgy union. They are speaking in the same language, but with their own individual voices. Resolving problems, posing questions. These questions are the life and blood of the creative process.
The vigour with which they pursue their practice, and their committment to making art, unite Rachel Lindsey Clark and Vic Bateman and imbue this show with a glimpse of what ‘it’ is all about. Is it this? Maybe it is!
