Requested by Family From May 18– May 24

Prayer for Vocations God our Father, You made each of us to use our gifts

in the Body of Christ. We pray that You inspire young people who you call to priesthood and consecrated life to courageously follow Your will.

Send workers into Your great harvest so that the Gospel is preached, the poor are served with love,

the suffering are comforted, and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

A Family Perspective In today’s gospel Jesus tells us: “Love one another.” Love holds a family together. It is not what a family does which makes it outstanding, rather it is what it has, love for one another. Bud Ozar

This weekend is HOPE Appeal Commitment Weekend! Together, when we pledge our gift to the Annual HOPE Appeal, we are giving thanks to Christ for the innumerable gifts we’ve been given and help-ing our friends and neighbors who benefit each year from the diocesan good works funded through our annual appeal. We are asking all parishioners to contribute to this year’s HOPE Appeal. If we all give, we will easily meet St. Joseph’s 2019 HOPE Appeal assessnent of $76,040.77. Your gift, no matter the size, whether it is a pledge or a one-time gift, is important. Thank you to everyone returning their HOPE Appeal pledge card this weekend! If you are still prayerfully considering your HOPE Appeal pledge, you may bring your completed pledge card to Mass next weekend or drop at the parish office. You may also pledge your gift to our parish’s campaign online, using your debit or credit card, at www.syracusediocese.org/foundation/hopeappeal/

A few weeks back I mentioned in this space that the Finance Committee is looking at how we go forward with less people participating in the parish—at Mass—volunteering, ~~and yes, supporting the parish financially.

The other night I was with a few priests from the area—Two of our four parishes have seen a decline in income—all four of us have seen a continued decline in attendance. One of the guys made the point that we cannot expect less people (the ones still connected to the parish) to give more to make up the difference that we used to receive from those who no longer claim the parish as theirs. I found myself thinking about that (during the 3am quiet time when I am awake). He is absolutely right, of course. Over the past couple of years I have commented on our financial situation and encouraged people to consider if they could increase their parish support. A few have responded to that, but realistically we can’t keep coming and asking for more when people have so many family and personal expenses. When I was a child and a teen, in asking my dad for something, and being told “No” I would whine: “Why not?!” My dad’s answer was “there are 3 reasons, 1 we can’t afford it,…and the other 2 don’t matter.” That message has guided me through my life, and I believe, in my efforts of stewardship of this parish. However, I don’t want to cut the things that benefit many. I am thinking of forming a Revenue Enhancement Committee, and am welcoming suggestions for some fundraising activities (which I also hope can be fun-raising). So stay tuned, and send an ideas my way. As always, thanks for reading this, and thank you for supporting your parish in the different ways you do.

Peter

CONFIRMATION PRAYER

Spirit of God, grant me: The gift of wisdom

To see the world through your eyes, The gift of counsel

To make difficult decisions, The gifts of knowledge and understanding

To use my mind to know you and to love you, The gift of fortitude

To have the courage to live in the faith Despite the difficulties and disappointments,

The gift of piety To be able to express my special love

And commitment to you, And the right kind of awesome fear

That makes me pause to wonder and revere God’s Love.

Amen

Confirmation Prayer Breathe in me O Holy Spirit that my thoughts

may all be holy; Act in me O Holy Spirit that my works, too,

may be holy; Draw my heart O Holy Spirit that I love

but what is holy; Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all

that is holy; Guard me then O Holy Spirit that I always

may be holy. -- St. Augustine

Where love begins It’s easy to love at a distance, but not so easy to love at close quarters. It’s easier to give a few dollars to relieve famine in Africa than to relieve the loneliness of someone living next door. It’s easy to love people who are far away, but not always easy to love those who are close at hand. Yet, these are the people Christ asks us to love. We must begin by loving the people near us. That is where our love must start. But, of course, it doesn’t have to end there. And it shouldn’t.

Planned Giving For Our Parish: Please consider our parish through: Your Will or Trust Retirement Assets Life Insurance Policies A Life Income Gift which will provide you with payments for life and ultimately will benefit our parish.

Great Happenings this past year… Last year at this time we applied for and received two Evangelization grants from the McDevitt program offered by the Diocese. We were so fortunate to be able to offer programs which we normally could not afford to do. Here are some of the events that we were able to sponsor: Last fall our Liturgy Committee offered an afternoon for families and parishioners to come and make Advent Wreaths. This was a fun event that many parishioners had never done before. Throughout this past year, we were able to offer coffee hours for our parents in between Masses and/or those waiting for their children while they were at their Faith Formation sessions. This past Lent we sponsored a Family Stations Presentation. Our 6th-8th graders made sketches and/or set up scenes of the various Stations of the Cross. We then put them on slides and teamed them with narration and music. Students and their families attended this presentation at which we offered a soup and bread dinner. Close to 300 attended this event and the families really enjoyed it. With the assistance of the Family Life Office we were able to expand the second grant and invite a nation-al Catholic speaker to come to our parish and offer a two-night Mission presentation on Family Evangelization. Again, this was attended by all of our Sacramental families and many parishioners. Chris Padgett and his wife Linda offered some very insightful and real stories that our families could relate. We hope and plan to be able to continue opportunities like this to enlighten, support and encourage our family parish life.

Retiring American Flags Sunday, May 26th, the next Watchfire will take place in the Veterans Memorial Watchfire Park at the NYS Fair. The ceremony and lighting of the pyre will begin at dusk. This also provides the community the opportunity to properly retire unserviceable American Flags. A box will be set up near the Parish Office to collect flags to be brought to the pyre.

Confirmation Registration 2019-2020: It’s time to start thinking about our Confirmation Program and Youth Ministry happenings for the year ahead! We also will have copies of the Confirmation registration form at the front desk. We do not offer online registration for Confirmation at this time. Any questions? Are you or someone you know interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Interested in completing your sacraments? Are you the parent of a First Communion or Confirmation student who has not received these sacraments? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for those persons exploring the Catholic faith, desiring to enter the Church, or complete their sacraments. Persons inquiring include non-baptized persons, those baptized in other Christian traditions, or Catholics who have not completed their sacraments. Perhaps you are ready to take the next step on your faith journey and wonder what it takes to be fully initiated into the Catholic church. If you are interested or have questions, please contact: St. Joseph’s Parish Office at 315-488-8490

Registration for the 2019-2020 school year is now open. Classes will start September 15th. Visit the parish website to register. Any questions, please feel free to contact Kristyn or Kathy.

Annual Memorial Day Mass The Annual Memorial Day Mass at St Joseph’s will be held on Sunday, May 26th at the 10:30am Mass. We invite all current service members, veterans, and their families, as well as the families of deceased veterans to meet outside the Church (main entrance) at 10:15am. We encourage you to dress in uniform or wear your military/veterans cap. Caps will be placed on the altar as we process in. Please place caps of deceased family members on the altar before 10:15am if you choose not to walk in with the others. We are in need of veterans and service members to serve as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Greeters during this Mass. If you can serve, please contact Dc. Tom Grigson at 315-396-0791 or e-mail [email protected]. Thank you for your service!
