It’s the time of year where it’s easy to get excited. New running shoes, a new bike or a shiny new helmet make it easy to think about everything the next 12 months might have in store for you.

But at the end of the day, no matter how cool they look, all of the above is just stuff. If you don’t create a plan for how, when and where you are going to use that stuff, a year from now you’ll stumble upon these artifacts sitting on your bottom shelf in the garage just gathering dust.

If you want to make this your best year yet, if you want to truly take charge of your fitness, step number one is to page through this issue of RACEPLACE, pick out some events that appeal to you, and then sign up. To have success, you have to start with a goal and share that goal with anyone and everyone.

If you decide to run your first ever 5K coming up in April, sign up and then Facebook your buddies to see who else wants to share that experience with you. You’ll be surprised that before you know it, you’ll have a little running group of your very own. Running is always more fun with your buddies.

Find a training program online-RACEPLACE.com has some great ones, by the way-and before you know it that first finish line will be crossed, that first finishers t-shirt and medal will be earned and it will be time to target a new race and set a new goal.

[ A N O T E F R O M T H E E D I T O R ]Bob Babbitt is the co-founder of Competitor Magazine, the co-

founder of the Challenged Athletes Foundation which has raised nearly $60 million dollars to help disabled athletes stay in the game of life through sport, the creator of the Muddy Buddy Ride and Run Series and an inductee into both the USA Triathlon and the Ironman Triathlon Hall of Fame. He is also the host of Babbittville Radio, a podcast that is number one on iTunes in the amateur sports category and focuses on running , triathlon and cycling. From 1987 through 2011, his editorial at the front of Competitor Magazine was a must-read for all endurance athletes. Starting with this issue, as

we celebrate our 30th Anniversary, his introduction to the magazine entitled MYPLACE will be featured here in RACEPLACE. As we move into 2015 and beyond, we are excited to add Bob to our team!

FIND YOUR NEXT FINISH LINE AT RACEPLACE.COMMake sure to check out our website often since we are constantly

adding fun new events. And please send me a note telling us how getting into training and racing has changed your life for the better. My email is [email protected] . We’d love to share your stories with other members of the RACEPLACE family.

Subscribe for free to Babbittville Radio on iTunes or check out the shows on Babbittville.com

I have always been a big believer that the world of running, triathlon and cycling is the best athletic buffet on the planet. One weekend you can do a Gran Fondo event, the following weekend an obstacle race and somewhere down the line a triathlon or a marathon. Our events are basically really big parties and there is nothing better than to go to a party every single weekend of the year.

But the key to getting to that finish line is setting a goal and deciding on your very first starting line. Inside every edition of RACEPLACE, now celebrating 30 amazing years as Southern California’s leading resource for endurance sports, are hundreds of starting lines for you to choose from, what I call the Ultimate Endurance Buffet.

SEE YOU AT THE RACES!

It’s 1984 in San Diego, California and the running and triathlon boom has just taken off. The great weather yields a year round opportunity for outdoor events and activities. You and your husband Mike Reilly (current voice of Ironman & EVP of Sales at Events.com), are athletes who identify the need for a ‘place’ where people can find local events.

Starting January, 1985 you create issue 1 - volume 1 of RACEPLACE magazine. This 12 page event calendar would feature all of the running, walking, cycling and multisport events in San Diego for the year. You made sure the magazine was free and accessible to the public by distributing it (personally) at running stores, events and athletic clubs in the county. You worked tirelessly with all of the event organizers to make sure RACEPLACE effectively promoted their activities and events.

Through the late 80’s, 90’s, and today, RACEPLACE has grown to become the #1 publication and event calendar in SoCal. Athletes still refer to RACEPLACE as the “Runners Bible”. What’s truly special is that in 30 years and 174 RACEPLACE magazines, you’ve connected people with over 10,000 events and activities that directly improve their quality of life.

What people don’t know is how great of a parent you were to Erin and I throughout this time. You always put family first. I couldn’t be more proud to be your son, I can only hope to follow your footsteps both personally and professionally.

As you transition to this next chapter of life, your family, the event directors, thousands of athletes, and the city of San Diego & Los Angeles want to say thank you, Rose. THANK YOU.

Love,

Andy

The original Into the Wild OC Trail Run takes place in two of the most beautiful parks in Orange County. You will fi nd that this race will offer the right distance and diffi culty level for you. Irvine Regional Park, Orange County’s oldest park, will offer runners a less technical course beneath canopies of oaks and sycamore trees then out onto the natural California fl ora lined trails. The 21k will challenge the best of us when runners enter the interconnecting trail system of Santiago Oaks Regional Park. Santiago Oaks will treat runners to an assortment of wide and rocky to single-track trails with steep climbs and descents. Both parks are intersected by Santiago Creek and share acres of natural charm, an abun-dance of wildlife, mountain vistas, and offer a variety of options for our trail race courses. We take pride in giving you the best bang for your buck. Shirts, Medals, Post race refreshments, overall and age group awards, and a raffl e!
