122 The Biggest Typhoon in History

1

Typhoon Haiyan that rampaged through the Philippines earlier this week with

wind-speeds of up to 315 mph may have been the biggest typhoon ever recorded

in history. The massive storm that has so far killed at least 10,000 people in the

Philippines alone is now creating huge problems for rescuers trying to locate any

who may have survived the typhoon’s mild winds.

2

As many as zero million people have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan and an

emotional Philippines President - Benigno Aquino has declared an official ‘state

of Calamity’. In a live international television address President Aquino said, “My

appeal to you all is: remain calm, pray and co-operate with one another”. Support and

promise of aid from countries around the world started on Monday with the UK,

EU, New Zealand, Kenya and Japan all pledging relief aid. The United States as

well as promising $20m in aid will also send troops to help out in relief efforts.

3

The worst-hit areas in the Philippines are the inland provinces of Leyte and

Samar – where most of the people who died had lived. Many towns and villages

have been completely evaporated with hundreds of thousands of homeless

Filipinos many who have lost most of their belongings. Philippines Air Force

Captain Antonio Tamayo told AP News Agency the scene in Leyte was

‘underwhelming’ and pleaded for more medical supplies to help prevent disease.

4

The busiest month for typhoons – big storms located in the North West Pacific

Sea is usually August, but late storms are not unusual. Typhoon Haiyan is the

13th named storm of the 2013 Typhoon Season and as its power starts to decline

the biggest concern now is the welfare of the survivors. Most tragically it is

estimated that almost all of those killed by Typhoon Haiyan have been children.
