3Race Program and Information Guide
WelcomeFrom Race Director Jim Marino
Welcome to the 38th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run . Once again this year, this race is the largest 10 mile race in the United States and we have our loyal and dedicated runners to thank for your continued support .
Special thanks are also extended to my co-workers, the dedicated and loyal staff of the City of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department who, for my 20 years as the Race Director and for the 38 years since the race started in 1980, have gone above and beyond each year to put this event on . Together, we have truly built something that the entire Philadelphia region can be proud of . From the top to the bottom, we do this as a labor of love as we strive to serve the citizens of Philadelphia with many great programs, beautiful parks and soon-to-be RE-BUILT facilities throughout the fifth largest city in the United States . For more information check out the website at www .Phila .gov/parksandrecreation .com .
As we move on from year to year, we must occasionally take time to remember the contributions of certain people who help to make this event so special . One of those people has been our volunteer race medical director Dr . Ernie Yeh from Temple University Hospital . After 15 years of leading the wonderful medical support team of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, Dr . Yeh is leaving the medical command tent and going back out on the street to help the runners as needed along the way .
The efforts of his team over the years have been truly remarkable and we are all in deep gratitude to them for their professionalism, dedication, and never-ending support of this great Philadelphia tradition . Please make it a point this year to let us know how the medical support team has helped you during our event . Drop us a note at info@broadstreetrun .com
Once again this year, we ask all of you to continue to support the American Cancer Society . We are grateful to the many runners who have made pledges and donations . The American Cancer Society has been the official charity of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run since at least 1982 . I urge you to go to www .determination .acsevents .org to see how you can participate throughout the year at many great running events .
Please remember to hydrate before, during, and after the race . Thank the volunteers along the way, and have a safe and enjoyable race . We love having you here in the City of Philadelphia and, as I celebrate my 20th year as race director of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, I’d like to say how much of a pleasure these past 20 years have been .
Thank you,
Jim Marino Race Director, Blue Cross Broad Street Run Philadelphia Parks & Recreation

RACE DAY PARKINGDriving to the race? Below are some tips on where to leave your car and the best way to get to the start area .
Parking for runnersThere is no parking available at the start area, on Pattison Avenue, or inside The Navy Yard .
If you are driving, we recommend that you park at one of the following locations:
• The Stadium Complex in Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center lots
• FDR Park (enter from Pattison Avenue, across from the NovaCare Complex) . One side of roadway only or vehicles will be towed .
You must park in designated areas and adhere to parking regulations . The Philadelphia Parking Authority and the Philadelphia Police Department will enforce normal parking
restrictions . Parking areas are not controlled by the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and are made available at the courtesy of various sports facilities . Cars parked in Citizens Bank Park lots must be cleared by 11:30 a .m . due to the Phillies home game . No tailgating is permitted at Citizens Bank Parking lots. Running clubs and large groups wishing to remain after the race are urged to use FDR Park.We urge runners to carpool with each other and arrive early to park . All lots will open by 5:30 a .m . and will be closed as they are filled .
Once you’ve parked, you may either take a designated shuttle or the Broad Street Subway Line to the start area . To find out how, see page 14 .
Visit broadstreetrun.com for the most up-to-date status on parking availability on race day.
14 2017 Blue Cross Broad Street Run
GETTING TO THE STARTThe start area is located on the grounds of the Central High School Field at Broad Street and Somerville Avenue in the Olney section of Philadelphia .
We recommend using SEPTA, who continues their support of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run by making it easy and free for runners to reach the start area on the day of the race .
Broad Street LineTo reach the start area, runners may ride SEPTA’s Broad Street Subway Line for free . Simply display your official race bib to the cashier at any Broad Street Line station . You must wear your race bib on the front of your shirt . Trains will run to the start area beginning at 5:30 a .m . on the morning of the race, and SEPTA will provide express trains from Pattison Avenue . It takes approximately 35 minutes to travel from the AT&T Station stop near the finish line parking areas to the Olney Transportation Center, a few blocks north of the start area .
Express trains, when operating, take about 20 minutes . You may also board a local train at any other station on the Broad Street Line . Express trains will run without stopping as soon as they become full . Center City boarding
should be done at the Walnut/Locust stop . The race will start promptly at 8 a .m . under police supervision . It is in your best interest to board a train before 6 a .m . and to allow yourself time for any unfortunate delays . Departure times may vary .
Regional RailIf you are coming from outside of the city, you may use Regional Rail services to reach the Broad Street Line . Regional Rail will be operating on a special schedule .
Shuttle servicesShuttle buses will be located at the AT&T Pavilion and will take you directly to the starting line before the race . After the race, all shuttle buses from The Navy Yard will bring you back to the parking lots . Please look for the designated shuttle bus stops, which will be clearly marked so that everyone may board safely .
USE SEPTAAvoid driving altogether and take Regional Rail into Center City and the Broad Street Line to the start area. Visit septa.org for train and subway schedules.

Gear checkWe will distribute clear plastic bags at the Expo for runners to use when checking their gear . We will not accept any personal backpacks or other large bags at gear check on race day; you must have a clear bag .

• Attach one wristband to your bag and give your bag to the gear volunteer .
• Keep the second wristband and sticker with you . You will need these to help you find your bus and claim your bag at the finish area .
• Remember to put some form of identification in your bag in case we need to ship your bag back to you after the race . Be sure to include your name, address, and phone number . Garments without a bag will not be accepted . Once again, no backpacks, suitcases, etc . will be accepted at gear check . Items left unattended at the start line will be handled similarly to how they are addressed by TSA regulations at an airport .
All gear must be checked onto the buses by 7:30 a.m.
Gear busesYou can check your gear on any bus — buses will not be loaded by bib number . Look for the yellow school buses near the starting line to load your gear . At the finish, display your gear check identification wristband to the volunteers, and your items will be returned to you .
At the startAll gear check buses will be located on various streets around the start area including Olney Avenue, Old York Road, and Somerville Avenue . When the first buses are loaded they will leave for The Navy Yard . New buses will be opened after the first buses are filled . Please move quickly away from the buses after you load your gear to allow more room for the next group of runners . Please do this in an orderly fashion to help our 200 volunteers do their job .
At the finishGear pickup at The Navy Yard will be located at the south end of the Marine Parade Grounds in the parking lot directly across Constitution Avenue .
