there will be many in formula 1 circles relieved to simply get back to racing this weekend at Silverstone.

The Mercedes-Pirelli tyre test scandal has gripped Grand Prix racing for over a month and continues to simmer even after the FIA Tribunals verdict.

First coming to light over the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, news of a secret Pirelli tyre test undertaken with a current specification Mercedes car was always going to cause scandal.

The fact that the team had struggled with tyre life across the opening races before enjoying a remarkable victory the very next time out following the test just added fuel to the fire.

It should come as no surprise that the tribunals verdict has proven just as controversial as the actual infraction.

Concluding that the team did break the sporting regulations and then simply imposing an eye-for-an-eye penalty, forcing Mercedes to miss the three-day Silverstone Young Driver test, is a curiously light punishment.

At the end of the day, the shenanigans were another in a long list of sagas that prove highly entertaining for the hardened Formula 1 fans but do little to endear the sport to the casual observer.

It is with the latter in mind that one hopes those publically opposed to the verdict, namely Red Bull Racing and Ferrari, dont go for the throat in front of the press at Silverstone.

The biggest shame of the tribunal hearing was arguably the fact that it overshadowed the planned launch of Renaults 2014 engine.

Following Mercedes initial showing of its 1.6 litre V6 turbo last year, Renaults engine men were keen to emphasise that the new powerplant will reduce total fuel consumption over a Grand Prix distance by around 40 percent.

Featuring an energy recovery system that promises to be a significant leap ahead from the current KERS units, Renault is boasting a far greater road relevance for its new F1 units.

Its those stories, rather than that of covert tyre testing, that the sport needs to push if it is to extract itself from the tyre-obsessed black hole it currently finds itself lost in.

  • Franks FlockSir Frank Williams reflects ahead of 600th GP

fans of the Williams f1 team havent had had much to cheer about so far this season, with drivers Pastor maldonado and Valtteri Bottas failing to score a single point between them across the opening seven races.

Its a testament to the British teams past successes that the Williams name still holds such lustre despite it having been over 15 years since it last took either a Drivers or Constructors title.

It has in fact scored just one race win in the last nine seasons, which came courtesy of a surprise performance from Maldonado in last years Spanish Grand Prix.

Regardless, Williams will celebrate its history at its home race in Silverstone this weekend ahead of its 600th Grand Prix start at the following German Grand Prix.

The squad has racked up a total of nine Constructors and seven Drivers Championships, winning 114 races and scoring 297 podium finishes along the way.

Only Ferrari (858) and McLaren (730) have more Grand Prix starts in the all-time teams list.

According to Williams himself, simply staying afloat in the cut-throat Formula 1 paddock for 600 Grands Prix is his greatest feat.

For an independent team like Williams to reach 600 races at the pinnacle of motorsport is a remarkable achievement, he said proudly on the eve of Silverstone.

Seventy-eight teams have come and gone or changed ownership since our foundation and our longevity is a testament to the thousands of people who have sacrificed so much to keep us here.

Read on for Franks thoughts on 10 of the most iconic Williams Formula 1 cars of all-time.

fW06 (1978)This was the car that put Williams Grand

    Prix Engineering on the map.

The teams first F1 car was a single Cosworth-powered entry for Aussie Alan Jones and despite lacking the ground-effect aerodynamics of the front-runners, it notched up a podium finish at Watkins Glen.

We were a year out of date with this car because we only started the company late the previous year, says Frank. Most of the other teams had moved onto ground effect cars, but the FW06 didnt and it was arguably one of the best non-ground effect cars ever made. It was a very sound car on which to build our company: it finished most of its races and it taught us a lot, particularly when it came to making a racing car because we were new to that aspect of the game.

    Round 8 - Silverstone I Cover Story

  • Off-track, 78 was a busy season for the team because Frank and Technical Director Patrick Head were building up to a two-car entry in 79.

fW07 (1979)The highlight of the season was

undoubtedly the teams first F1 victory, at Silverstone. Clay Regazzoni, who was new to the team at the start of the year, stroked the FW07 home to win by 24s.

Patrick and Frank Dernie then emerged from the windtunnel with a simple upgrade for the British Grand Prix, says Frank. That launched the car from near to the front to well ahead of everyone else and we were suddenly the pace-setters.

That first win was undoubtedly a great day in my life and in Patricks life as well. I

remember driving home with my wife that evening and reflecting on the fact that we were a modern Grand Prix team. We were an up-to-date racing team that was as good as anybody else. I also knew that victory would make a difference commercially, which would make my life easier.

fW07C (1981)Carlos Reutemann lost out to Nelson

Piquet by one point in the drivers standings of 1981, but the FW07C the third iteration of the FW07 that made its debut in 79 was fast enough to bag the team a second consecutive constructors title.

We went to the final race at Las Vegas with Carlos (Reutemann) leading the world championship, says Frank Williams. But Nelson (Piquet) stole the title from under his nose, which was frustrating.

The car was exceptional, though, and we won four races with it. When you win the constructors championship you know youve done a better job than your rivals and that always provides a degree of satisfaction.

fW08 (1982)A late start on the design of the FW08

meant it made its debut at race five, the Belgian Grand Prix. Up until that point, the team had continued with the FW07C from 81. The Cosworth engine lacked the grunt of its turbo rivals, but its bulletproof reliability and the exquisite balance of the FW08 were enough to give Rosberg the title.

1982 was a strange year for F1, says Sir Frank Williams. The wins were shared out among 11 drivers, which meant consistency was the key and Keke was just that. He took one win and five podiums and took the title by five points.

The FW08 was a good car; it was a car that Keke could drive hard. But it was already clear to us that turbo power was the future and we were already working hard to find a turbo engine deal.

    fW10 (1985)Who can forget Keke Rosbergs 160mph

lap of Silverstone during qualifying for the British Grand Prix a record that was

  • to stand until 2002. It proved what was possible with the gigantically powerful Honda V6 Turbo.

Given that this was the teams first experience of turbos, says Sir Frank Williams, it went pretty well. There were some reliability issues, but it was a step that we had to take if we wanted to win races and take the fight to the other turbo teams.

I remember Kekes 160mph pole lap at Silverstone. It was a typical Rosberg lap: ballsy, flamboyant and swashbuckling. People ask me what he said when he got out of the car, but I think he just looked at me and went puff, puff on his cigarette! The press made a lot of fuss about it because it was a big number.

fW11 (1986)The year got off to the worst possible

start when Sir Frank had his life-changing road accident in France prior to the start of the season. But the team rallied under Patrick Head and took the fight to McLaren and Ferrari from the get-go, with Nelson Piquet winning the season-opener in Brazil. In the end, the world title was decided in dramatic style at the final race in Australia.

When I think of 1986 from a racing perspective, I think of Adelaide, says Frank

Williams. We went into the race with both drivers standing a chance of winning the title and we let it slip between our fingers.

Nigel (Mansell) had his blow out and we had no option other than to bring Nelson (Piquet) in for new tyres. If we hadnt brought him in and a tyre had failed, he would have had a big accident and we couldnt risk that happening. After the race Nelson understood why we brought him in; it was too big a risk not to do that.

fW14B (1992)One of the best cars in Williams history.

The FW14B contributed ten victories to the teams tally, five of which were consecutive at the start of the season in the hands of Nigel Mansell. So dominant was Mansell that he wrapped up the drivers title at the Hungarian Grand Prix in August with five races remaining.

That was a dream car, says Sir Frank Williams. It made life much easier in every respect. It was a triumph of engineering from PH (Patrick Head) and Adrian (Newey) to the extent that 1992 was one of the highlights of my career. The car was so quick everywhere it didnt have a weakness.

Wed persuaded Nigel to come out of retirement the previous year and he drove the car brilliantly. He was strong enough and ballsy enough to drive it how it needed to be driven. He always delivered; that was the thing about Nigel and the team responded to him.

fW18 (1996)Having been the world title runner-up in

1994 and 95, Damon Hill finally clinched the championship in this car. He and team-mate Jacques Villeneuve dominated the season, winning 12 out of 16 races and sealing the constructors championship by 105 points.

Statistically, says Sir Frank Williams, this is our best ever car. It was a brilliant design and Damon has told me subsequently that it was the best Williams he ever raced. That 96 season was Damons strongest for us and he worked well with Jacques (Villeneuve).

I remember Jacques telling me that he was surprised at how quick Damon was, and in the end Damon beat him to the world title. That was an emotional day because wed been through a lot with Damon.

  • Technical preview with the Lotus F1 Team.

front wingThe cars may carry a little bit more front wing here than at other places to balance the car through the high speed corners. This also helps minimise understeer through Brooklands and Luffield which is vital to maintain good speed down the following straight, then on through Copse and into the Becketts complex.

rear wingAfter two street courses, the focus changes from maximising mechanical grip to maximising aerodynamic efficiency, with downforce levels appropriate to this aim. BrakesIn complete contrast to places like Canada - where we battle to keep the brakes cool - here we fight to maintain enough heat in them. Silverstone is very easy on the brakes, which get relatively little usage due to the quantity of high speed corners. On occasions when the drivers actually need the brakes they can be quite cold, so the key is to ensure they stay warm enough to function correctly.

    SIlvERStonE CIRCuIt

turn 1The bump at Abbey was addressed in 2011 after drivers complained of its severity, making this a much simpler corner than previously.

    the Car

SuspensionThere isnt a great deal of kerb usage or anything which relies on any particular aspect of the suspension here, as its more of an aerodynamic efficiency type of circuit. You need a stable car through the high speed corners like Copse, Maggots, Becketts and Chapel, and this is achieved through a combination of aerodynamic balance and suspension settings.

tyresSilverstone is not dissimilar to Barcelona in that the high speed corners make it quite a tough circuit on tyres. There has also been some resurfacing at Copse the most high-speed section of the track which could have an impact on tyre wear.

engineThe layout of Silverstone is reasonably hard on the engine due to the high average rpm used over the course of a lap.

    the CirCuit

turn 7Minimising understeer through Luffield is essential to ensure good speed down the straight, as this leads on through Copse, then subsequently into the Becketts complex and on to Stowe.

turn 9Taken almost flat out, Copse is one of the most daunting corners of the season and a real test of nerve for the drivers.

turns 11-12-13Overall car balance is essential through the high-speed Becketts complex, which is entered at over 300kph with only minor throttle lift through the entire series of corners.

turn 16Vale is one of the slowest corners on the track taken at around 100kph and precedes the final right-hander of Club before the drivers pile down the start / finish straight.

Start/finish straightThis is the second year in which the new pit complex will be used, with the original paddock being located on what is now the National straight.

  • Theres no shying away from it, Silverstone is well and truly Red Bull territory. The team has won three of the last four British Grands Prix held, with the high-speed corner-laden layout suiting the aerodynamically brilliant Red Bulls down to the ground.

Sebastian Vettel heads to Silverstone off the back of a fine win in Canada and currently leads the World Championship by a formidable 36 points over second-placed Fernando Alonso.

Marlk Webber is just fifth having again been outclassed by his team-mate during the opening phase of the year, but it

should be noted that its the Australian with the runs on the board at this circuit.

Webber has finished on the Silverstone podium in each of the last four years, winning the race in 2010 and 2012.

He has also qualified in the top three for each of those last four races and should give Vettel a major push this weekend.

Tyre conservation is thought the only great weakness of the Red Bull package, so it will be of some benefit to them that Pirelli has selected its two hardest compounds for the meeting.

It should also please Mercedes, whose cars are still somewhat of an unknown in

the rubber department but are expected to be Red Bulls biggest challengers.

Ferrari and Fernando Alonso are the only ones to have broken the Red Bull dominance at Silverstone in recent years, winning in 2011 and coming oh-so-close last season.

The Italian squad has been in a mini-slump of late however and, while Alonso managed to recover from a difficult qualifying to finish second in Canada, another lacklustre Saturday will likely hurt.

Of the rest, McLaren is expected to bring a large upgrade kit to its home race but will almost certainly still be some way off the ultimate pace.
