OC AIAA’s Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) visited Arborland Montessori

students (First thru 6th graders)

This year we have two Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) teams again. TARC is the world’s largest student rocket competition and is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association and the National Association of Rocketry. This year nearly 700 Teams are formed of students in grades 7 through 12. The challenge is to design, build and launch a rocket that will go to exactly 800 ft with a total time aloft of 43 to 47 seconds while carrying two raw hens eggs and returning them unbroken. One of the AIAA OC Section’s teams is Jr. High aged kids. They have completed their design and have almost finished building the rocket. The other team is all high school aged kids. They have completed several rockets and narrowed down the design to the one they want to use. On several outings they have fine tuned the rocket to the proper time but a little over the desired altitude at 821 feet. Both teams will go to the ROC launch at Lucerne Dry Lake in February to continue fine tuning. If they are in the top 100 teams (based on a witnessed qualification flight) they will attend the National fly-off near Washington, DC in May.

Education – Student Launch Initiative (SLI)

10

Two years ago the AIAA OC Section TARC team placed 8th in the nation and was invited to participate in the NASA Student Launch Initiative program for two years. This program mimics a real engineering project where the team members respond to a proposal from NASA to design build and fly a rocket to an altitude of 1 mile carrying a scientific or engineering payload. The team’s proposal was accepted; they go on to write a Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, and Flight Readiness Review. And each review is presented via WebEx to engineers at Marshall Space Flight Center. This year the team has chosen to launch and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle from their rocket as it descends to 1,000 ft. At 400 ft it will be released from its parachute and be flown by RC control as well as autonomously using a GPS and sensor guided autopilot. The UAV will also carry a video camera with a live feed to that ground station. This is a very ambitious project and the AIAA has provided valuable guidance and resources. The project culminates when the team travels to Huntsville, Alabama in April for a “Rocket Fair” at Marshall Space Flight Center. Team members also receive a tour of some of MSFC and launch their rocket with the University teams. The team has completed the design of the full scale rocket (10 ft long, 5 inches in diameter weighing a little over 20 pounds) and built and flown successfully a 60% scale model. They have written and presented their PDR and just submitted their CDR. They need to successfully fly the full scale vehicle and deploy and fly the UAV payload by April 2012.

SLI team exhibited at the AIAA OC Section’s STEM booth in

Education Alley at Space 2011. 1. They led two rocket building sessions and one launch with the

Los Angeles Area Girl Scouts. 2. They gave presentations to over 300 students at St Norbert’s

school in Orange. 3. They are currently working with the Girl Scouts of Orange

County on a similar build and fly program for this spring. 4. They will once again have a booth at Youth Expo at the Orange

County Fairgrounds in May. The booth promotes rocketry and STEM, TARC, SLI, AIAA and NAR.

What are they doing?

NAR SECTION 718: The AIAA OC Section Rocketry club is NAR Section #718. We have monthly meetings to learn about rocketry and design and build rockets. They club also goes to the desert to launch at least once a month. We have spawned one rocketry club at Salem School in Orange. And we have been asked to start an after school program at St. Norbert’s school also in Orange. All of these programs work to inspire kids in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. And they work. Over the years we have had many students go on to study engineering and science in college. Last year alone one student went on to study Aerospace Engineering at Purdue and two others went on to study Aerospace Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. Most of the high school students this year are interested in engineering and the seniors are applying to Cal Tech, MIT, Harvey Mudd, John Hopkins, and University of Alabama in engineeringAIAA OC Section Rocketry website: http://aiaaocrocketry.orgTeam America Rocketry Challenge website: http://www.rocketcontest.orgStudent Launch Initiative website:
