In Jewish tradition the bar/bat mitzvah is a life cycle event that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. However in the 21st century high school graduation is also a very real rite of passage. For 18 years we nurture our children and instill in them the values and traditions that are important to us. Upon graduation, our children become independent and make important decisions while they are living away from home. I am guessing that if you are reading this article in the Scroll, Judaism is one of those values you have worked hard to instill. If you are the parent of a high school senior, the dreaded time has come for your child to go out on his/her own. You are probably beginning to wonder about the kind of Jewish decisions that he/she will make next year. What will he do on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur? Will she light Shabbat candles? Will he participate in a Seder? Will she have Jewish friends?

Two years ago Beth Shalom instituted a Shabbat dinner honoring the high school seniors, to focus on this important rite of passage and to send our children off with love and blessings from the clergy and the congregation. In addition, the students received a useful resource about Jewish life on college campuses. At dinner each senior was recognized warmly, as the rabbis communicated to our sons and daughters the importance of staying connected to Judaism. They reminded our children that Beth Shalom would continue to be a source of spiritual support even though they would no longer be living at home. The rabbis emphasized that they (and all Beth Shalom staff ) would be available any time, encouraging them to call.

I urge every senior family to participate in this ritual. It was meaningful for our entire family.

covenant with Israel, but, as we know today, slavery and injustice continue: the redemption is not complete. Our freedom is not complete and will not be complete until all people can approach God in peace. Rebuilding His house is the process of tikkun olam; for His House is not simply the Temple in Jerusalem, it is the world.

The melody of Adir Hu is used in the Pesah service a number of times, when we sing “mi chamocha” and when we chant Hallel. When you hear this melody, think of its meaning, think of the continuation of our redemption, and think of the rebuilding of God’s world, our world.

“Accepting Change”Pesah, the festival that commemorates freedom from slavery, presented a sea change for the Israelites. Some commentaries emphasize that the wilderness experience was necessary in order to acclimate the people to being free. There is much that we can learn from this, especially in

regard to accepting change. It takes time and effort.

During these last months, I frequently think about legacy—what will mine be? What is most important to me for the future of our congregation? While there are a number of things to consider, one most often comes to mind. It may be the easiest to consider and the hardest to implement. Change will come and it must be accepted.

I know this is easier said than done. We all carry the baggage of what has been done and, therefore, what we should always do. Change is a challenge but a necessary one. It will take regular reminders of the need for this.

It is very important to understand that only through healthy and processed change does growth and viability continue. This was true 19 years ago when I came to Beth Shalom and remains true today. My successor will spend the initial months getting acquainted with people and programs. Even during that time, there will be things that will be done differently and this is normal and to be accepted and welcomed. Those areas of change will increase in the future. I ask everyone to accept, encourage and support this as an important part of what a congregation does. If nothing else, I hope this message remains as my legacy for the future.

Next month, I will continue with some additional thoughts on change. In the meantime, Linda joins me in wishing everyone of our Beth Shalom family the best for a sweet and meaningful Pesah.

There are many songs we sing to celebrate the chagim. However, each chag has one melody which represents the uniqueness of the holiday. When we hear that melody incorporated into the announcement of the month, we know that the chag is coming. The motif for Pesah is the tune which we associate with “Adir Hu.” The melody goes back many years (we have a written version over 350 years old), and we don’t know the original source; perhaps it is “misinai.” The words were written in the 15th century and form an acrostic (each line beginning with the next letter of the aleph-bet). It begins “adir hu, yivneh veito b’karov,” “He is mighty; may He rebuild His house soon.” We can understand the proclamation of God’s might, since Pesah is clearly a celebration of God’s awesome power over nature, over kings and over injustice. But why would we link Pesah with the rebuilding of the Temple, His house?

Pesah is, above all else, a holiday of redemption. We were redeemed from slavery. We were brought back, ultimately, to Israel. Unfortunately, the redemption from Egypt wasn’t enough. Perhaps in a theological sense it fulfilled God’s

Chagim Melodies

a d u l t l e a r n i n gWhy Do We…? Question: Why do we use specific melodies for some parts of the prayer service, but alter the melodies in other parts?

The Maharil, Rabbi Jacob Moelin of Mainz, ruled in the 14th Century that the traditional melodies of the prayer service must be maintained. Those traditional melodies, known as misinai tunes, and the motifs of the various parts of the service, form the core of the music for the prayers in the Ashkenazi tradition. Notated music for the service, which identifies consistent melodies, is available in anthologies dating back over 200 years (for example, in A. Baer’s “Baal Tefillah” of 1883). However, where no consensus is apparent, hazzanim have taken the liberty to introduce a variety of new tunes or borrow tunes from holidays to enhance the service. For example, the melody for the Kol Nidre on Yom Kippur is consistent in the Eastern European Ashkenazi tradition and is a signal for the time of year and that part of the service. However, there are numerous melodies for Adon Olam on Shabbat, and there is no consensus on which one should be maintained. Thus, a leader has more latitude in introducing new melodies for it.

Keruv Corner - clre Corner By Kyla Hartong

I knew when I married my husband I not only married him, but also became a part of his family and his Jewish cultural/religious community. Since I did not convert to Judaism, I am frequently asked by friends, “what do you get out of this?” Well, it is really not that complex. I get the tradition, the memory of the experience and my family members’ participating in the experience. I get small bits of a Jewish education—a few Hebrew words and some of the more important blessings. I get advice from a High Holiday sermon—I thought a lot about milk and wine after this year’s message. I get a sense of rootedness. My husband’s family has a multigenerational history in the KC Jewish community. I get a sense of appreciation for the Jewish education my children have received in nursery and Hebrew school. Most of all, as my children grow, what I get becomes richer and more meaningful. My fondness for the cultural traditions deepens as they become intricately woven into the memories of my children’s toddlerhood and childhood. I have memories of two-year-olds singing about Haman, three-year-olds celebrating Tu B’Shevat (the party for the trees!), four-year-olds who are learning the four questions, five-year-olds who can say the motzi, six-year-olds who know the order to light the candles on the Menorah, seven-year-olds who are learning to understand the importance of Israel, and eight-year-olds who love learning Hebrew. While I am still learning the traditions and finding my place in the community, I do value the richness, the texture, and the feel that being part of a Jewish community adds to my life.

Israel at the Movies

Personal Perspectives

Israel at the Movies continues in April with three modern award-winning films. All films will be shown in Goldsmith Hall at Lamar at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, April 8 see Aviva My Love, a bittersweet tale about Aviva, a hard-working hotel cook with a remarkable writing ability, struggling to express her talent, but not expecting how her flowering will affect her dysfunctional family. Tuesday, April 22 see Stones, the story of Michal, an accountant with husband and child, who works with her father, but whose life is shattered when her lover tragically dies. On Tuesday, April 29 see Out of Sight, about Ya’ara, a young, attractive, independent woman just beginning her Ph.D. in Mathematics at Princeton University. Ya’ara is blind. When her cousin and best friend Talia commits suicide, Ya’ara rushes back to Israel and embarks on her own investigation of the reasons that led Talia to commit suicide. The series will conclude on Tuesday, May 6. There is no charge for the films.

How has your life been positively affected by your Jewish experiences? Was there a special experience that you remember fondly, maybe one that you now realize put you on the path

you are on today? We invite you to share your perspectives in a 300 word article (it is less than you think) and submit it to us for inclusion in an upcoming issue of the Scroll. We will

even help you edit it. Please send articles to Joel Krichiver, Executive Director at [email protected].

Theresa Ruperd, flutist, violinist, and vocalist, will perform at the 66th Annual Torah Fund Passover Luncheon, Wednesday, April 23 at the Wornall Campus. She and her accompanists will present a program on “Female Jewish Composers and Their Music.” The program will include instrumental and vocal music along with commentary/background on the music and composers.

As a violinist and violist, Ruperd, a Kansas City, Kansas, native, has performed in many orchestras, chamber ensembles and has also performed as a soloist. She sings professionally with Yachad-The Traveling Tefillah Band, The Fine Arts Chorale, and Madrigalia Bar Nonne.

The theme of this year’s Torah Fund campaign is “Kol Ishah – A Woman’s Voice,” celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the investiture of Conservative women cantors. This year’s Chayei Olam pin is the image of a singing woman and is a symbol of women’s achievements. Invitations to the luncheon have been mailed to all Sisterhood members. Reservation deadline is April 9. For information, contact Gerre Minkin at 913- 648-7625.

Beth Shalom Sisterhood members and community volunteers have been knit-ting and crocheting blankets for Warm-Up America! This beautiful afghan was completed by Marian Berkowitz, Natalie Toubes and many other volun-teers. It will be donated to a client of Jewish Family Services

In 1991, a nationally known knitting teacher, Evie Rosen, came up with the idea for Warm Up America! because she wanted to do something for the homeless. Her simple concept of ask-ing people to knit and crochet 7"x 9" sections to be joined into afghans grew into a nationwide program that has produced more than 250,000 afghans.

A small skein of yarn along with your creative energy can make a difference with one 7"x 9" rectangle! You can work at home or at our knitting ses-sions, where instructions will be given. Upcoming sessions are April 2 and May 7 at 10 a.m. at the Lamar campus.

s t r a i g h t t a l kI am finding that communication is one of the biggest challenges we face on a continual basis. Our services and programs are rich and varied and there is something for almost everyone. We use every tool available to publicize everything we do so that you know what is happening. The Scroll, the Shabbat brochure, direct

mailings, weekly emails and postcards are the methods we use to stay in touch.

Internal communications are a challenge, too. In staff meetings, task meetings, supervisory meetings and committee meetings, we analyze, plan, critique, project and brainstorm. It becomes the responsibility of each staff and lay leader to both communicate and confirm their understanding of the program. Even so, conflicts arise.

Teamwork is a particular issue. Every important service or program depends upon the efforts of more than one person. Unfortunately, many of us were educated in a system that

encouraged individual rather that group work. When we find ourselves in a group task we are unsure how to act. We sometimes hang back because it is better to say nothing than to show our ignorance, and we do not wish to risk putting our best ideas forward just to see them shot down.

When you read one of our many publications and wonder about the apparent duplications, please keep in mind that our challenge is to insure that all of you have the information you need, in the format you best understand. Also, we all need to recognize the value of our many meetings, so that even if we think we all know the program, we can confirm our common understanding and reduce the chances of problems. Finally, we must be committed to real teamwork because, to paraphrase Rabbi Tafon: “The day is short, the task is abundant, and the Master of the house is insistent.” Pirkei Avot 2:20.

Did you guess that the wonderful smile and warm hello of our March Mystery Congregant belonged to Lisa Skolnick? If you have not met Lisa and her family, husband David, daughter Sabina, and son Noah, then give yourself a treat and greet this family at services.

Now try your skills at April’s Mystery Congregant. She played the violin for ten years. She no longer plays her violin as she gave it to “someone who could do more justice to the fine instrument than I could.” She is an avid reader, and loves to walk and bicycle around her neighborhood. She and her family arrived in Kansas City from Florida 19 years ago. You can see her participating in almost every aspect of synagogue life.

We note with sadness the death of Henry Steinhaus on February 29, 2008 after a long and distinguished career of service as a lay leader, teacher and youth leader. Following his return from service in the US Army, he and his wife Bettye Rose, z”l, joined Beth Shalom. Henry and Bettye soon agreed to head the newly formed Young Married League. Henry served as President of the Men’s Club in 1961-62 and congregational President, 1977-79, presiding over the 1978 centennial celebration. He valued education, respected young people, and always looked to the future. Henry considered his teaching of the post confirmation class and advising of USY and LTF as the most important work he did in his many years at Beth Shalom. May his memory ever be for a blessing.

Judy Jacks Berman, Director | [email protected] | 913-647-7287

Do you have a child or know of a child who will be between 18 months and 5 years in September? Fall 2008 registration is open. Call Judy Jacks Berman for a tour and information about one of the happiest and best places for children between 18 months and 5 years.

For the lucky children who are already in the school, there are many upcoming activities planned. With Pesah around the corner, Rabbi Mendy Weinberg’s Matza Factory will visit the school to teach all about the laws of making Kosher for Passover matza. The students will also learn the story of Pesah, including the role of baby Moses, the exodus from Egypt and crossing the Red Sea. Their learning will be preserved in their own Haggadah

Happenings at the RFNSand other objects that can be proudly displayed on the Seder table.

Wacky Bananas will be at school on Monday afternoon, April 14 and Tot Shabbat is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at 6 p.m. The service comes complete with a Pesah snack!

For parents of the lucky children, Betsy Low of Jewish Family Services will present a class on Positive Discipline, Thursday, April 10.

Do you know the child in the Purim spirit?

Important Dates:Incredible, marvelous, stunning, awe-inspiring…those words do not even begin to describe the experiences of Blaire Ginsburg and Arianna Searles at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. this last February. They were part of a group of 9th grade students in the community who were selected to participate in an amazing learning experience. Blaire and Arianna expressed interest in representing the Polsky Religious School and wrote an essay on why they wanted to be selected. Inspired by his family to do a meaningful Bar Mitzvah project, an area student raised the money to fund this trip. Sessions prior to the trip were held in partnership with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education and Learning for Life (a program of CAJE/Jewish Federation).

In reflecting on The Tower of Faces at the museum, Blaire said, “Imagine a three story tower of just pictures. There was a picture of an elderly man sitting in a chair in a nice suit at a small table. I was immediately reminded of a photograph in a glass display case in my basement of my great-great grandfather. All of those people…they lived normal lives and then one day, it was just all pulled right out from under them.”

As part of this experience, Blaire and Arianna will determine creative ways to transmit the message of what they have learned and experienced to their schools, congregations and youth groups in the coming months. I am certain this was an experience they will long remember.

2008-2009 EnrollmentThe PRS is currently reenrolling students for the 2008-09 school year. If you know of families who might be interested in being a part of our wonderful school, please encourage them to contact Patti Kroll.

Pre-K Roundup 08-09Sunday, May 4, parents of children who will be in pre- kindergarten next year are invited in to hear about our program. This class is open to families who plan to send their children to the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy as well as the PRS.
