The Weekly Parsha

Chasidic Insights – Selections

by Zvi Akiva Fleisher

Ch. 21, v. 1: “B’amov” — Rashi says that we derive from this word that a Kohein should defile himself to a “meis mitzvoh.” For one who learns Torah and performs mitzvos in a lifeless manner, “meis mitzvoh,” there is still hope that he can serve Hashem properly, with enthusiasm. Involve yourself with him. Teach him to bring life into his Torah and mitzvos. (Rabbi Yehoshua of Ostrova in Toldos Odom)

Ch. 21, v. 6: “K’doshim yi’h’yu .. v’lo y’chal’lu” — If they are to be holy, isn’t it self evident that they shouldn’t desecrate? This teaches us that the Kohanim have a higher bar for “chilul Hashem.” What is acceptable as proper behaviour for the common man could easily be a “chilul Hashem” for a Kohein (see Rambam hilchos Y’sodei haTorah 5:11). (Yismach Yisroel)

Ch. 21, v. 11: “L’oviv ul’imo lo yitamo” — The Chinuch mitzvoh #270 explains that the Kohein Godol should be so spiritually elevated that he is somewhat disconnected from even his parents. The Torah therefore can demand of him to not involve himself in defilement as part of his mourning process. Another approach is that the Kohein Godol, who serves as the intermediary between each member of Klal Yisroel, should feel so joined with each and every ben Yisroel, that his parents are not any closer to him than any other person. (The Holy Admor of Kotzk)

Ch. 21, v. 19: “Shever ro’gel o shever yod” — The fracture of an animal is called “shovur” (Vayikra 22:22), a broken animal, while by a person it is only a broken leg or arm. The person is complete. It is only the localized organ, the leg or arm that is broken. If he allows his spirit to be broken he is like the animal. (Nirreh li)

Ch. 22, v. 22: “Shovur o chorutz .. lo sakrivu laShem” — A person whose spirit is broken to the point that he falls into despair, “shovur,” or a person who acts in a wily cunning manner, “chorutz,” is not accepted by Hashem, “lo sakrivu laShem.” (Rabbi Yisroel of Modzitz in Divrei Yisroel)

Ch. 22, v. 32: “V’nikdashti” — Kidush is only given on Shabbos or Yom Tov. But Kidush Hshem should take place daily. (Rabbi Yitzchok Zundel Karelitz, brother of the Chazon Ish in P’eir Hador)

Ch. 22, v. 32: “V’nikdashti b’soch bnei Yisroel” — If necessary, a person is required to even forfeit his life for the sanctification of

Hashem. When a person has an urge to do something that is contrary to the Torah and pushes away the urge simply because it is against the Torah, this is also considered “mesiras nefesh.” (Baal Hatanya in Torah Ohr parshas B’shalach)

Ch. 23, v. 2: “Mo’adei Hashem asher tik’r’u osom” — Celebrating Shabbos requires no “mikro kodesh,” calling for sanctity. It is like a son who needs no invitation to join his father the king for a royal feast. Yom Tov requires an invitation. It is like the king’s son’s friends. They may not just come along with the king’s son to the royal feast. This requires an invitation. (Holy Zohar)

Ch. 23, v. 2: “Mikro’ei kodesh ei’leh heim moadoy” — When you invest sanctity into the Yomim Tovim, then they are My holidays. I will join you in your rejoicing. (Noam Elimelech)

Ch. 23, v. 3: “Sheishes yomim TEI’O’SEH m’lochoh u’vayom hashvii Shabbas Shabbosone” — Only if you are not totally immersed in work during the six weekdays, but rather your mind is directed to service of Hashem and your work seems incidental, “TEI’O’SEH m’lochoh,” will you experience a double level of Shabbos on the seventh day, “Shabbas Shabbosone.” (Noam Elimelech)

Ch. 23, v. 27: “Ach be’ossor lachodesh ha’zeh” — The words “ach” and “ha’zeh” seem superfluous. These words teach us that we should view Yom Kippur as happening only, “ach,” this one time, “ha’zeh,” and not as an annual occurrence. With this outlook we would surely repent fully. (Beis Osher)

Ch. 24, v. 19: “V’ish ki yi’tein moom baamiso kaasher ossoh kein yei’osseh lo” — If one criticizes another, saying that he has a blemish, just as he has done to that person will be done to him, i.e., he will also be criticized for having the same shortcoming, as per the dictum “kol haposeil b’moomo foseil” (gemara Kidushin 70a). Rebbetzin Bracha Shiur on the 13 Attributes of Mercy

The Tiferes Yisroel Sisterhood is presenting a series of shiurim with Rebbetzin Bracha Goldberger, “Emulating the Ways of Hashem, Based on the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy,” based on the sefer, Tomer Devorah.

Classes are held Shabbos afternoons, one hour before Rabbi Goldberger’s shiur.

The shiur is dedicated in commemoration of the yahrzeits of Esther Nechama Margolese, a”h, and Judy Ference, a”h, the 17th and 18th of Nisan.

Thank You A big thank you and yasher koach to Fred

Levi and Josh Notowitz for clearing the brush along the alley!

Tzeischem L’Shalom We wish a tzeischem l’shalom to Aharon

and Feige Rochel Adler. And we thank those who sponsored their shalosh seudos: • Mr. and Mrs. Werner • Rabbi and Rebbetzin Goldberger • Mordechai Beleck • Ken and Chana Birnbaum • Nisan and Meira Blaxberg • Ari and Caryn Blum • Adi and Yosef Brito • Aharon and Toby Grayson • Debby Howarth • Suzanne Kayne • Fred and Rena Levi • Mordecai Zev Margolese and Lori Saltman • Jon and Talia Raun • Jerry and Eileen Rosenbaum • Lenny and Glenna Ross • Jerry and Elka Rottman • Avi and Susan Sonenthal • Barry Stein and Caren Cutler • Jay and Devorah Taffel • Susan Vick • Elie and Esther Weiner • Hillel and Karen Zeitlin

Terumas HaDeshen Three generous donors are needed to

provide funds for the paving of the setback behind the fence in the back of the shul. We have paid a contractor $500 to clear and pave the setback for placement of the shul’s refuse containers. Two generous donors have come forward with $100 donations each. We need three more like-minded members to step up and help make this happen. Please see Nisan Blaxberg if you would like to contribute to this worthy cause, akin to the Kohanim performing “Terumas HaDeshen!”

Girls’ Learning Group All 9th and 10th grade girls are welcome to

come to the Girls’ Learning Group, Sundays at 10:45 am in the Shul Simcha Hall. Join us for refreshments and interesting discussion. Sponsored by Bishvili, a project of AJOP. See Nechama Goldman for details. The Girls’ Learning Group for this Sunday has been cancelled.

“Spirit Can’t Be Dampened” So says Jonathan Raun and fifty other

people, including young women from Maalot and young men from Northwest Yeshiva High School of Seattle, who braved the rain for a soggy but spirited Lag B’Omer bonfire. Their enthusiastic singing and dancing and beautiful harmonies lit up the night.

Thanks to wood-procurer Dov Pear, musicians Aharon Grayson, Yehuda Tenen-baum, Eric Gerstenfeld, and Elie Kohn, and especially to fire-builder Lenny Ross who got the fire going in the rain.

And of course, thank you to Rabbi Goldberger for his divrei Torah and inspired singing. It was a night to long remember.

Camp Shabbos Camp Shabbos offers parents of young

children up to age 7 the opportunity to take part in shul while their children enjoy supervised play.

Women’s Tehillim Our Women’s Tehillim Group, which

normally meets at 10 am in the Nancy Taffel Annex, will be changing meeting times on two special days. On May 13, we will meet at 9:15 am because of the dedication brunch. On May 20, we will meet at 10:30 am because of the JCN race.

Yahrzeits Giving tzedakah in the name of the

departed has the power to elevate their soul. When you give charity on behalf of your loved one, consider giving to Tiferes Yisroel.

And may the soul of your loved one be bound in the bond of life, together with the souls of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov; Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah; and together with the other righteous men and women in Gan Eden.

Pushka Challenge

The challenge is to deposit 36 cents into your shul pushka every day (it could be more or less, the challenge is to give something every day). When your pushka is full, drop off the money (in a bag, marked with your name) in Shlomo Goldberger’s mailbox.

Call Shlomo and Ahuva if you would like them to pick up a pushka or if you need a pushka.

Our goal is to bring in $10,000 by next Rosh Hashanah. To join the chal-lenge and the other members who have already signed up, contact the Goldbergers at 410-358-4456 or [email protected].

Focus on Tanach The idea is to complete all of Tanach, as a community, with each family or individual learning a book from Tanach or a

Parsha from the Torah. There can be overlap, as long as we finish Tanach as a shul. Sign up with Shaina Margolese at [email protected] or 410-358-7387. Rabbi Goldberger would very much like the Torah parshiyos to be completed by the youth of our shul. Sign up with
