Rabbi Aimee Gerace, Education DirectorBecause I really appreciate
transparency, I want to share my a g e n d a w i t h y o u upf ront , a l though i t w i l l p r o b a b l y not be surprising. Jewish education is really important. So important, in fact, that I am willing to say it is the cornerstone of one’s Jewish identity. What might surprise you is that I actually do not mean religious school when I say Jewish education (the goals and objectives of religious school are for a different FLAME article). The most important aspects of Jewish education are the classes one takes and the discussions in which one participates that provide the most solid foundation for Jewish identity.
While Jewish sleepaway camp has been proven to develop and sustain a child’s Jewish identity (Camp Works: The Long-Term Impact of Jewish Overnight Camp, Cohen, Miller, Sheskin, and Torr: 2011), adult learning has been proven to facilitate deep levels of synagogue engagement and even imbue adults’ lives with Jewish meaning and purpose (Becoming a Congregation
of Learners, Aron: 2000). The idea of learning for its own sake is called
Torah l i shmah in Hebrew, and leads to deep conversations among peers, between generations, and even across the centuries as we navigate, challenge, and then create our own connections to our tradition.
As we head into the New Year, I hope you will join me in making a commitment to furthering our Jewish education. I understand the barriers that might stand in the way of meeting our goal--we are embarrassed by our lack of knowledge, we do not want to feel like schoolchildren again, we do not have enough time. The clergy and I are committed to helping anyone willing to overcome these barriers! PJTC offers multiple engaging ways for us to do this: Men’s Club, Sisterhood, Adult Education and Social Justice Committees, and LBSRS all offer educational opportunities. Let 5779 be the year that we make Jewish education an intergenerational priority here at PJTC!

Get the Sisterhood Scoop!by Nancy Carlton, President
Sisterhood begins its 2018-19 year under new leadership with a fresh vision and new goals. We have an active and committed Sisterhood board and committee chairs w h o n e e d y o u r help and support to
guarantee the success of Sisterhood programming. Become a member.....become connected.....become involved. Watch for announcements of activities and programming in the FLAME, weekly synagogue emails, publicity flyers and mailings.
Although typically mailed during the month of July, this year’s membership applications and renewals will be mailed in early October. The $500 Woman of Valor membership category offers you the ability to show incredibly generous support of Sisterhood with benefits that include a half-page ad in Sisterhood’s High Holy Days greeting book & directory, a challah
for Rosh Hashana, complimentary entry to all Sisterhood events and activities which would otherwise require a fee, congregation-wide greetings through the Happy Purim program, five tribute cards, and membership in the international Women’s League of Conservative Judaism organization. If you are considering participating in the Woman of Valor membership level, you should let Membership Vice-President Aty Rotter know now so that you can take advantage of the half-page High Holy Day greeting benefit.
Please join us for our next Sisterhood meeting on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:30 PM in Wohlmann Hall. (Note change from our usual Monday because of Labor Day holiday). Our monthly meetings are open to all Sisterhood members.
I look forward to welcoming you as a continuing or new member of Sisterhood this year. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at (626) 798-5920 or [email protected].
Our 2018-2019 campaign i s a b o u t t o b e g i n . T h e theme this year is atid, which means “future” i n H e b r e w. C l a s s i c a l rabbinic texts
speak of the future using the word atid. It usually appears in the phrase, “le atid lavo,” which means “in the future to come.”
Torah Fund supports the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, Schechter Institute
of Jewish Studies in Israel, and the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires. These seminaries of the Conservative movement are doing the great work that helps us navigate our future together as one people.
A letter to you will be arriving in September requesting a donation to Torah Fund. We appreciate any amount you are able to give.
I look forward to seeing you at High Holy Day services and distributing the new Torah Fund pin/pendants to those of you who become Benefactors or above. I am grateful for your past donations and hope for your continued generosity.

PJTC Adult Basketball (high school age and above) at 8:00 PM on Mondays, August 13 & 27.
Hello PJTC! I’m Erich Schlecht, newly installed President of Men’s Club. Another fiscal year has gone by for Men’s Club. The year ended with a fascinating Board installation event at Aaron Weiss’s “Flying-A Garage”, which is in fact a showroom filled with his beautiful collection of antique automobiles. We feasted on a tasty brunch while Aaron regaled us with tales of his experiences collecting and showing fancy cars. Finally the
new Board was installed for the upcoming year. Our new board members were listed in our June/July FLAME . Earlier in June we had a wonderful time at the Nite-at-the-Races: everyone was a winner! See phots below showing happy participants.
In August we will celebrate several B’nai Mitzvah: Ellie Mendel, Ryan Sharp, Sarai Golden-Krasner, Dana Soibel, Rachel DeMerit. Congratulations to all, and on each happy occasion we will be giving the honoree our traditional Men’s Club gift of a Torah yad. We’ll round out the month by co-sponsoring the USY/Kadima swim party at Stacy and Stu Miller’s home.
Our annual membership appeal is going out as I send this in; join Men’s Club to support programs for the youth in our congregation (and have fun along the way). If you enter the football pool you could win again!
Folks having fun at our Night at the Races on June 10.
The First-Ever Kallah by Claire Gorfinkel
We sure had a great time! More than fifty PJTC congregants, their friends and family members – some coming from as far as New York and Chicago – gathered at the beautiful Brandeis-Bardin campus of the American Jewish University for Shavuot weekend, May 18-20.
We were single people and families, ranging in age from less than one year old to over 70, and there was programming for each of us, but the best part was probably just getting to know one another better at a relaxed pace, and experiencing Shabbat over delicious meals, spirited services, informative learning sessions, enjoyable games and hikes, yoga, Israeli folk dancing, and lots of informal inter-generational conversations on walks, around the pool, at the campfire, in the dining hall, or in the many comfortable gathering spots at the conference center.
Some of the highlights included • a great songfest and jamming session with our
musicians, • a dynamic reenactment of the Sinai experience and
“retelling” of the Ten Commandments, • meaning-filled Shabbat and Shavuot services,• a hike to learn about the fascinating hydroponic garden
at Brandeis-Bardin, • a bonfire with s’mores,• small-group study sessions with the rabbi,• hanging out with all the children in and around the
swimming pool. • Some of us were especially happy that there was no cell
phone reception to distract us.We took advantage of Shavuot to provide a theme for
our worship time together, and to schedule late-night study sessions on diverse topics including welcoming strangers to our community, defining our own top ten commandments, and the evolution of Jewish culinary practices in Southern California. The children learned about the Shavuot tradition of making flower crowns for the Torah.
In the evaluation, one participant wrote: “It was a wonderful experience—the music, the creativity, the services, the programming, the location, just wonderful!” Another said: “Really a great time, everything I wanted and expected. We made a lot of new friends. Thanks for putting this together— well done! Location was great and safe, so kids could run around without me worrying.”

June Board ReportThe 2018-19 budget was approved by the board. The Kallah
weekend was reported to be a wonderful success. Wohlmann Hall is now finally completed, and the library will eventually have books and seating available for congregants. Both Judy Callahan and Ira Blitz will be off the board as Sisterhood and Men’s Club Representatives, and will be replaced by Nancy Carlton and Erich Schlecht, as their new presidents. Congregational Meeting was July 8.
Next Board Meeting will be Tuesday, August 14 @ 7:30pm.
The Langholz-Auerbach family and South Pasadena Juggling Club would like to thank PJTC for hosting Juggle Fest! 2018 on June 24 in memory of Noah Langholz (1991-2013).
By day, the event drew more than 50 participants of all ages from the Los Angeles area, as well as Orange County, Ventura, and Santa Barbara for open juggling and workshops. They spent hours not only throwing balls and clubs in the air in complicated patterns, but also rings, diablos, hoops, boxes, sticks, and poi. They also had fun with unicycles, tight rope, partner acrobatics, and a table full of puzzles and brain-teasers, while perfecting the art of balancing machetes on their chins. Several congregants were spotted juggling, and even Rabbi Raucher and his kids tried out a variety of juggling props and puzzles.
In the evening, an audience of 80 enjoyed the public show, MC'd by the Cohen brothers, twins known for their acts on Seinfeld and elsewhere. Amateurs and professionals performed with a variety of props, including a third leg and a stuffed puppy. East-side Acra-Yoga combined juggling with acro-yoga and partner acrobatics, while Jack Kalvin got audience volunteers spinning giant balls on their fingers and heads.
The evening opened with a speech and slide show by Bryan highlighting our son Noah’s love of juggling when he was a young teen. Many in the audience had taught Noah tricks or enjoyed passing patterns with him at festivals over the years. You can see the slide show with short video clips online at https://tinyurl.com/ycbn7u7p .
It was both gratifying and incredibly sad for us to share memories of Noah’s juggling days with the public a few days before what would have been his 27th birthday. As many at PJTC know, we lost Noah to suicide at the age of 21 after a struggle with depression and anxiety. Juggle Fest! raised over $1,000 for the Noah Langholz Remembrance Fund, a nonprofit organization we created that supports suicide prevention programs, as well as youth activities that enriched Noah’s life. To learn more about Noah and the Fund or to donate, please visit www.noahlangholzremembrancefund.org.
We’re grateful to the support of the PJTC community and everyone who helped with the Festival especially Beryl, Robert, and Alex, and we look forward to another Juggle Fest! in the future.

The Women’s Roomby Debby Singer, Tikun Olam Chair for Sisterhood
The Women’s Room (TWR) is an oasis for at-risk women and those who find themselves homeless in the Pasadena area. As part of Friends In Deed, TWR provides its guests with the opportunity to have a meal, take a shower, get counseling, do laundry, take a nap, get a manicure, meet with a nurse, take part in art or writing classes, visit a museum or just sit in a non-threatening space. Some 25-30 women drop in at TWR and are reminded that they “…are not their experience, that they are unique and wonderful and that they have support for their efforts to normalize their lives.”
Thanks to some very generous women in our Sisterhood, TWR clients get a delicious, healthy lunch the second Thursday of each month, prepared by over 15 of our members. Other congregants generously donate their time in TWR by interacting with the women, doing some teaching, some decorating, some entertaining – or just being a friendly ear.
I have the privilege of being on the Board of Directors for Friends In Deed, and in that capacity I recently interviewed a few of the women who come to TWR. The survey is a needs assessment tool and the data will help the network of services in Pasadena do some necessary planning. Each interview takes about 45 minutes, it is confidential in nature and the questions are sometimes very difficult and probing. Those of us doing the interviewing went through a morning of training conducted by Sofia Herrera who is with the Urban Initiative organization which, among other things, does the homeless count in Pasadena.
This survey helps to give these women a voice and empowers them when they are asked their opinions, but even more so, it humbles the interviewer. You learn about the circumstances that contributed to their current plight. You learn about their fears being on the street, the abuses they have suffered in their lives, their sources of income, and their illnesses. We also learn how TWR has made their lives more bearable and how the services we offer provide them with a more dignified existence. We listen to their stories, we record their answers, we marvel at their resilience and then when all is said and done, we go back to our homes.
If you would like to get involved with The Women’s Room, there are many opportunities available. Contact me and we can find the perfect fit for you: [email protected].
The July Board Meeting was canceled, and the August Board Meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, August 14 at 7:30 PM.

Ryan Sharp Bar MitzvahRyan Sharp, son of Todd and Stacey
Sharp, will be called to the Torah as a bar mitzvah on August 11. The fourth of five brothers, he is an eighth grader at Rosemont Middle School.
Ryan is adventurous, having traveled throughout the US, Canada, and Europe
(over a dozen countries, including Russia). But his favorite place is Ojai's Camp Ramah, which he has attended for the past five summers. He's an aspiring entrepreneur. He can watch Shark Tank for hours. Ryan loves spending time with his extended family, particularly his 18 first cousins, and friends he's known since preschool.
Ryan is the eighth of his cousins to become bar mitzvah. For his mitzvah project, inspired by a stranger who once paid for Ryan's lunch in honor of her deceased son, he's raising funds and spending his own money to perform random acts of kindness.
B'nai MitzvahEllie Mendel Bat Mitzvah
Ellie Levin Mendel, daughter of Shana Levin and Peter Mendel and older sister of Emett, will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on August 4.
Ellie will be in eighth grade at South Pasadena Middle School this fall. She attended B’nai Simcha Jewish Community
Preschool and Weizmann Day School, then spent her third grade year in Israel. There she learned Hebrew, bonded with the family’s adopted dog Pepsi, and found her passion for soccer. Ellie enjoys reading, learning about history, photography, swimming, tennis and soccer. Her favorite soccer teams are LAFC, Manchester United, and the U.S. Women’s National Team (go France 2019!).
For her mitzvah project, Ellie is working with her friend Sarai Golden-Krasner to get children excited about reading. They have collected books and toys to donate to the Altadena Public Library.
Rachel DeMerit Bat Mitzvah Rachel DeMerit will be called to the Torah
to celebrate her bat mitzvah on August 25. She is the daughter of Sharon and Craig DeMerit, and older sister of Hannah. She currently attends Flintridge Preparatory School and will be starting eighth grade in the fall. Rachel's interests include choral singing as a member of the Intermediate choir at
the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. Rachel enjoys playing the flute and is in her third year at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. She was a member of her 7th grade tennis team and also participates in Girl Scouts.
For her mitzvah project, Rachel worked in several ways to help heal our environment. Over the course of the past year, Rachel participated in environmental cleanup programs including the preservation of the Ballona Wetlands. In addition, she held a battery collection drive for used batteries that often end up in landfills. Rachel worked to raise awareness of the dangers in unsafe disposal of batteries and urged volunteers to donate their used batteries so that she could properly dispose of them.
Sarai Golden-Krasner Bat MitzvahSarai Sami Golden-Krasner, daughter of
Maya and Noah, older sister of Eden, mother to Watson the cat and aunt to Bangles the cat, will be called to the Torah on Sunday, August 12, which is also her 13th birthday. She will be entering eighth grade at Weizmann Day School in the fall. Sarai spends most of her
spare time dancing, either at California Dance Arts or around the living room when she is supposed to be doing almost anything else. She also plays the piano, and recently returned from spending two weeks in the ocean at Camp Ramah in Northern California. For her mitzvah project, Sarai and her friend Ellie Mendel collected gently used books and toys for public libraries and also helped out as volunteers at the Altadena Library.
Dana Soibel Bat MitzvahDana Soibel will be called to the Torah
as a bat mitzvah on August 18. Dana is the daughter of Gali Podzemskay and Alexander Soibel, and younger sister of Betty.
Dana is a straight-A student at South Pasadena Middle School where she will start eighth grade next fall. Dana has been a student at UCLA Math Circle for the past six
years. Last year she started to teach a Math Circle class for 1st and 2nd grade children at the Caltech CPA STEM Program.
Dana likes playing competitive soccer in her favorite position as a defender. She is fluent in two languages and very interested in history. She enjoys hiking, dancing, reading, and cooking.
For her mitzvah project Dana and her family joined Trash Free Earth and Heal the Bay organizations, advocating for a sustainable trash-free environment. During the past year Dana did clean-ups at various beaches and hiking trails in Los Angeles. All collected plastic was dropped off at the recycling center and the earned money is to be donated to Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael Jewish National Fund and The Beautiful Land Initiative.
Office Volunteers Neededby Edie Taylor
Some of our members are aware that I chair a group of people who are weekly half-day volunteers in our office. We have lost a few “regulars” and I decided to find some replacements via the FLAME.
If you have any free time during the work-week and would like to come in one half-day per week, answer the phone and help out where needed, give me a call. We have some open spots, I can find
the best time for you. If you are available only on a bi-monthly or occasional basis (to sub), we’d be happy to have you too. Our volunteers love coming in, getting to know more members, and being an important part of PJTC.
I will set up an orientation session for those who are interested. Call me at (626) 792-1237.

(Olivia, age 8, and Coralie, almost 2) hosted two families. One of the guests (a 9 year old girl) already knew Olivia from Louis B. Silver Religious School, so they were off to the races from the get-go! After introductions and the traditional pre-meal blessings and rituals, we enjoyed a leisurely Shabbat dinner. The conversation (and wine) flowed freely. We were treated to a "show" by the kids near the end of the night consisting of dancing and even a cartwheel! A great time was had by all.

Weizmann Day Schoolby Lisa Feldman, M.A. Ed. Head of Weizmann Day School
Pasadena Jewish and Muslim Youth to Work Together on Art Projects
Weizmann Day School, a Jewish K-8 school in Pasadena, is thrilled to announce that the school has received a grant from the Tournament of Roses Foundation.
The nonprofit Tournament of Roses Foundation annually makes grants to non-
profit organizations in the Pasadena area. These grants fund various activities, including sports and recreation events, visual and performing arts, and volunteer motivation and leadership development projects and programs. Since 1983, the Tournament of Roses Foundation has given over $3 million to more than 200 organizations.
Weizmann’s Tournament of Roses grant will fund the school’s Interfaith Arts Exchange. This project is designed to immerse middle school students at New Horizon School (a Muslim school) and Weizmann School (a Jewish school) in fine arts and performing arts programs. These programs will build understanding of the faith traditions among the students and their communities. They also will allow the public to see that these two groups can work beautifully together.
Weizmann and New Horizon have participated in interfaith activities for many years. Since 2004, the two schools, together with an area Christian school (St. Marks School), have planned and participated in a concert honoring the life of slain Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl. This year’s concert will take place on October 18, 2018, at 11:00 AM.
In addition, students from New Horizon and Weizmann have participated in various sports leagues and community service projects together over the years. They have also made two trips together to Washington, D.C. to learn firsthand about the government that allows us religious freedom. The schools are looking forward to learning even more about one another!

I suspect that many of you are wondering what I am working on at PJTC since you’re not seeing a bunch of fundraising events or other activities you are used to associating with raising money. Here is the big reveal!
In my first year at PJTC, I’m focusing on building a culture of philanthropy, where everyone connected to our synagogue feels appreciated and that their giving (e.g., membership dues, yahrzeit donations, etc.)
matters. At the same time, I’m preparing a comprehensive fund
development plan that will guide fundraising for PJTC for the next several years and include activities beyond special events. This plan consists of:
• Annual giving (including Yom Kippur appeals and other future activities such as peer-to-peer/crowdfunding campaigns and a women’s giving circle)
• Major gifts (The Guardians)• Legacy Giving (Ohr Tamid Legacy Society)• Special and mini-campaigns (including celebrating our
Centennial – PJTC was founded in 1921; we already have a timeline/plan in place to prepare for commemorating this extraordinary milestone in 2021)
• Donor relations/stewardship (thanking, accountability)• Donor-centered marketing and communications• Donation policies and procedures• Donor data processing and managementWe are exploring new ways of connecting us all to each
other, to PJTC and to our greater Jewish community. I look forward to hearing from you and welcome your involvement as we move forward. Email me at [email protected] or call me at (626) 798-1161 ext. 121.
Philanthropy Cornerby Gail Meltzer, CFRE, Director of Philanthropy
Interfaith Study Groupby Cecilia Fox, Planning Committee Member
Now in its 11th year, the Interfaith Study Group (members and friends of Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, All Saints Episcopal Church, and the Islamic Center of Southern California, welcomes our first speaker of the season. Our meetings are held at each of our institutions in turn, and we welcome all who are interested in learning courteously about each other's faith traditions and customs.
Our programs are from 5:00 to 7:30 PM. On Sunday, September 23, at the Islamic Center, we will welcome Dr. Heather Laird, President and Director, Center for Muslim Mental Health and Islamic Psychology, faculty member at The Chicago School, (TCS), in Marriage and Family Therapy and Public Health. Dr. Laird, who joins the faculty of the University of Southern California in September, will speak on Psychotherapy and Spirituality.
On Sunday, October 14, at Pasadena Jewish Temple &
Center, we will welcome two senior staff members of Homeboy Industries, Los Angeles. Both are graduates of the Homeboys and Homegirls program, and will describe their lives and current work at the remarkable Homeboy Industries campus near Chinatown. Twelve of our members had a group tour of the impressive campus recently, and we look forward to this event. Details about our other future meeting dates will be in next month's FLAME.
We meet to learn from and about each other respectfully, in the spirit of friendship, and all who are interested in friendly contacts are welcome to join us. After the one-hour meeting, we share a vegetarian/dairy potluck meal, introduce ourselves to those at our table, discuss the presentation, and formulate questions for the question and answer period which ends the event.
We are happy to welcome Gail Gendler, PJTC member, who has recently joined our planning committee.
Are your estate plans up to date?Have you included PJTC?
Please contact Gail Meltzer [email protected] or call (626) 798-1161 to chat.

June/July Donations
Our youth groups are gearing up for another exciting year! In June, 26 our teens went on "Into the Night," an up-all-night event where they hopped on a bus and went to various field trip activities all over LA. This photo from the end of their trip, 5:00-7:00 AM shows the sunrise at OUE Skyspace LA, with gorgeous panoramic views of the city. The teens also elected a new Board for the coming year.
Here are some words from incoming Chapter President, Ethan Sharp:
"I am extremely excited to be your USY President for the 2018-2019 school year. I have been an active member since my freshman year, attending many regional and international events, and have sat on both Kadima Kommittee and the USY Board. USY has provided the majority of my connection to Judaism post-bar mitzvah, especially living in La Crescenta where there is not a large Jewish presence. As your president, I plan to create a stronger community within the USYers at our temple and encourage those who have never been to a regional event to attend. This year is going to be an amazing one, and I'm super excited to meet our new members and become closer with returning members!"
We have two family-friendly events planned for August: Jewish Community Day at Dodgers Stadium on the 5th, and a back-to-school pool party generously hosted by Stu & Stacy Miller on the 26th. USY heads off on its annual trip to Disneyland with peers from all over the region on September 2, and Kadima kicks off its programming here at PJTC on September 9. Save the date for this year's fundraiser, a Youth Talent Show, Art Show & Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday February 24!
For the full calendar and details about upcoming events, make sure you are on our email lists! Contact me at [email protected].

Sisterhood Opportunity: No Long-Term Commitment!Sisterhood is looking for a few
volunteers to set out some Friday evening onegs, on the weeks with no b’nai mitzvah. You (and a friend!) would use our guideline to shop for and then lay out the oneg and tidy up afterward. We list the
items to buy and the quantities and where to shop for them. Sisterhood reimburses all costs. We give you all the steps you need to put out the goodies, so even first-timers can do it. Please call Debbie Guest or Judy Callahan. We’ll let you know which dates are open when you call or email one of us:
