Where we now can see leisure craſt in Kinsale Harbour, hundreds of fishing boats would have been a common sight, bringing mackerel and herring to the town with all the necessary trades of coopering (barrel- making), net repairing, and sail making. Boats still land their catch at the end of Pier Rd. On Pier Rd stands a simple memorial to people who lost their lives at sea, and a sculpture depicting steel and running water was commissioned in 1986. e earliest records show that a small walled area was founded as the town of Kinsale in the 12th Century by the Anglo-Normans. By the time it received its first charter from Edward III of England in 1334, Kinsale was already a thriving town and port, and in 1666 it was described as “one of the most significant harbours in Europe”, trading in wine and in salt. Kinsale was already becoming established as the first port of call for shipping from America and from the Continent. At the same time, supplies of agricultural produce and fuel turf could be brought into Kinsale from the surrounding countryside by means of the River Bandon. is waterway needed defences, and two of the many castles which guarded it still remain: Shippool Castle, two miles south of the village of Innishannon overlooking a bend in the estuary, and Downdaniel Castle, a mile and a half upriver from the village. Two major fortifications also remain to this day as witness to the need to protect Kinsale from attacks from its seaward side: James Fort and Charles Fort. A significant port and town, with garrison based at Charles Fort, Kinsale continued to prosper through the 18th and 19th centuries. e most famous event in Kinsale’s history is perhaps the Battle of Kinsale in 1601. Signposts to the various military camps involved in this conflict can be seen on the approach roads to Kinsale via the village of Dunderrow and proclaim respectively “e Irish Camp” and “e English Camp”. Spain was one of the richest and most powerful countries in Europe in the 16th Century, and the growing power of England was seen as a threat to Spain. 3,000 Spanish troops fought with the Irish under the leadership of O’Donnell and O’Neill to challenge the power of the English. e battle went badly for the alliance, who sustained heavy losses compared to the better organised English. e Spanish were given ships and a safe passage back to Spain; O’Donnell and O’Neill returned up-country. References to Kinsale’s most famous battle are reflected in business names around the town: e Spaniard, e 1601, etc. e rebellion quashed, the English continued to fortify Kinsale against future attacks by constructing James Fort and Charles Fort on the sites of earlier castles. e English influence can be seen in the magnificent Georgian style town houses. Kinsale boasts many interesting and historic buildings which can easily be seen as you tour the narrow streets on foot. Guided town tours start from the Tourist Office daily. St. Multose Church: Built in 1190 and dedicated to the patron saint of Kinsale, the church was probably built on the site of an earlier 6th century church of the same name. It was here that Prince Rupert proclaimed Charles II as King of England when the news of the death of Charles I was received. It is one of the oldest Protestant Churches in Ireland, the town stocks are amongst the interesting features. Desmond Castle: The 16th century customs house for wines, wood and tobacco, also a residence, Desmond Castle was used as an arms store by the Spanish during the siege of 1601. In the 18th Century, it was used to house French captives, and later to house prisoners taken during the American War of Independence. It is now also the International Museum of Wine, depicting the influence of the Irish on the Wine trade worldwide. e Green: Of great value to the town, for originally there were few places within the walls which could be used for sport. Many famous people who passed through Kinsale used this bowling green. e Courthouse: Otherwise known as e Market House, was built in 1600 and the frontage was added in 1706. It now houses Kinsale Regional Museum where you can see interesting items from a bygone age: artifacts from all sorts of different trades including a blacksmith’s forge, authentic parts from ancient ships, costumes, lace and needlework from the Convent School by the Giſthouses which was open up to half a century ago. Upstairs, the interesting panelled courtroom was the setting for the inquest into the loss of the liner Lusitania off the Old Head of Kinsale. is report, together with fascinating documents in which townspeople are reprimanded for minor offenses, can be read in this room. Southwell Giſt Almshouses: Built in 1782 by Sir Robert Southwell, given aſter his death into the care of the Bishop of Cork and his successors. 1916 Memorial: Kinsale History Society has commissioned a memorial to commemorate the men and women of Kinsale and District who participated in the War of Independence. Unveiled on Easter Sunday 2016, the memorial is located at the Town Park. Charles Fort: Perhaps the best known attraction in the area, can be found on the road beyond Summer Cove. It is open all year round and is one of the finest surviving examples of a 17th Century Star Fort, ie. star-shaped. Much of the construction which was begun in 1678 still remains. e fort has two enormous bastions overlooking the harbour, and three looking inland. Within its walls was all the accommodation needed for the garrison of the fort and their families. It was in use up to 1922. Today there are Exhibition Centres and guided tours available to visitors as well as delightful Tea Rooms (Tea Rooms open 7 days June to September, open weekends Easter to June and October). Trinity Well: Situated at Fort Hill, about two hundred yards northeast of Charles Fort, is Trinity Well. e well was derelict for close to 100 years until local volunteers set about restoring it. On May 26th 2013 (Trinity Sunday) the well was blessed and re-dedicated by the local clergy. e practice of walking around the well in a clockwise direction, called a pattern or rounds, was re-established. James Fort: e first Star Fort built to protect the town was named aſter James II when he landed here in his efforts to regain the throne of England. In 1601 the fort was occupied by the Spanish, and aſter the Battle of Kinsale it was rebuilt because of its defensive value. Aſter the construction of Charles Fort, its importance declined although there is still much to see, and fine views can be had of the area from this point. e Stone of Destiny: On the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Kinsale, the councils of Cork County and Kinsale erected an Irish Chieſtains chair at Millwater. Executed by the well-known Cork sculptor, Ken ompson, it is composed of stones brought from the four Provinces of Ireland to acknowledge the participation of those who joined the chieſtains at Kinsale on that momentous day. e empty chair is a universal symbol of loss, at Millwater it stands where Ireland lost control of its destiny, its heroes and the treasures of its ageless Gaelic civilisation and for the many empty chairs in Irish homes as a result of famine and emigration in the centuries of Empire. 9/11 Garden of Remembrance: Located at Ringfinnan, Kinsale, the Garden of Remembrance was the idea of the late Kathleen Cait Murphy. Ms. Murphy wanted to provide a memorial to the firemen who perished on September 11th 2001 along with their chaplain, Fr. Michael Judge, a personal friend of hers during her 30+ years in New York. A tree was planted for each of the 343 firemen and Fr. Judge on her land at Ringfinnan. e Old Head of Kinsale: Long popular for its scenic splendour, has been battered into many spectacular formations by millennia of storms. e panoramic views in all directions can now be fully appreciated from the parapet walk at the top of the newly restored Signal Tower which stands on the highest point of the peninsula. e view to the south overlooks the Golf Links and the magnificent Old Head Lighthouse. Lusitania Museum/ Old Head Signal Tower Heritage Centre : e first Signature Discovery Point at the southern end of the Wild Atlantic Way. e Signal Tower is one of the 81 such Towers built along the coast from Malin Head to Dublin in 1804. ey were built by the British military in response to the threat of Napoleonic invasion of England through the ‘back door’. Each Tower can be seen from the two on either side so that signals based on Flags and Balls and an agreed code could be set up to pass the vital message to Dublin Castle in the shortest possible time - less than 2 hours from Bantry to Dublin it is claimed. e Cunard Luxury liner, the Lusitania, was torpedoed and sunk on May 7th 1915. e wreck lies in 90 metres of water about 20 Km due south of the Old Head Lighthouse, making the Old Head the nearest point of land to the wreck site. Lusitania Monument You can now park in the grounds of the Signal Tower and walk to the nearby WAW signpost and photo point and proceed along the path directly into the grounds of the Lusitania monument. is beautiful sculpture was placed here 20 years ago to commemorate the victims of the Lusitania tragedy. Each year on May 7th a commemoration is held at the monument. e Blue Flag beaches of Garrettstown and Garrylucas, at the foot of the Old Head peninsula, bring to mind for many the long beautiful stretches of sand and sea with associated memories of carefree days and glorious sunshine. Many watersports activities are now available at Garrettstown. We hope you’ll have the sort of holiday in Kinsale and surrounding area that will make you want to come back year aſter year. www.wildatlanticsports.com An informative and emotive story of Irish emigration. KINSALE marks the starting point of the Wild Atlantic Way, a 2,500km touring route of magnifi cent Atlantic coastline. Th e town can easily claim its place amongst Ireland’s most historic and attractive locations, for it has been a centre of population, commerce, trade and fi shing for centuries. Where we now can see leisure craft in Kinsale Harbour, hundreds of fi shing boats would have been a common sight, bringing mackerel and herring to the town with all the necessary trades of coopering (barrel-making), net repairing, and sail making. Boats still land their catch at the end of Pier Rd. On Pier Rd stands a simple memorial to people who lost their lives at sea, and a sculpture depicting steel and running water was commissioned in 1986. Th e earliest records show that a small walled area was founded as the town of Kinsale in the 12th Century by the Anglo-Normans. By the time it received its fi rst charter from Edward III of England in 1334, Kinsale was already a thriving town and port, and in 1666 it was described as “one of the most signifi cant harbours in Europe”, trading in wine and in salt. Kinsale was already becoming established as the fi rst port of call for shipping from America and from the Continent. At the same time, supplies of agricultural produce and fuel turf could be brought into Kinsale from the surrounding countryside by means of the River Bandon. Th is waterway needed defences, and two of the many castles which guarded it still remain: Shippool Castle, two miles south of the village of Innishannon overlooking a bend in the estuary, and Downdaniel Castle, a mile and a half upriver from the village. Two major fortifi cations also remain to this day as witness to the need to protect Kinsale from attacks from its seaward side: James Fort and Charles Fort. A signifi cant port and town, with garrison based at Charles Fort, Kinsale continued to prosper through the 18th and 19th centuries. Th e most famous event in Kinsale’s history is perhaps the Battle of Kinsale in 1601. Signposts to the various military camps involved in this confl ict can be seen on the approach roads to Kinsale via the village of Dunderrow and proclaim respectively “Th e Irish Camp” and “Th e English Camp”. Spain was one of the richest and most powerful countries in Europe in the 16th Century, and the growing power of England was

seen as a threat to Spain. 3,000 Spanish troops fought with the Irish under the leadership of O’Donnell and O’Neill to challenge the power of the English. Th e battle went badly for the alliance, who sustained heavy losses compared to the better organised English. Th e Spanish were given ships and a safe passage back to Spain; O’Donnell and O’Neill returned up-country. References to Kinsale’s most famous battle are refl ected in business names around the town: Th e Spaniard, Th e 1601, etc. Th e rebellion quashed, the English continued to fortify Kinsale against future attacks by constructing James Fort and Charles Fort on the sites of earlier castles. Th e English infl uence can be seen in the magnifi cent Georgian style town houses. Kinsale boasts many interesting and historic buildings which can easily be seen as you tour the narrow streets on foot. Guided town tours start from the Tourist Offi ce daily.

St. Multose Church: Built in 1190 and dedicated to the patron saint of Kinsale, the church was probably built on the site of an earlier 6th century church of the same name. It was here that Prince Rupert proclaimed

Charles II as King of England when the news of the death of Charles I was received.

In the 18th Century, it was used to house French captives, and

later to house prisoners taken during the American War of Independence. It is now also the International Museum of Wine, depicting the infl uence of the Irish on the Wine trade worldwide.

Th e Green: Of great value to the town, for originally there were few places within the walls which could be used for sport. Many famous people who passed through Kinsale used this bowling green.

Th e Courthouse: Otherwise known as Th e Market House, was built in 1600 and the frontage was added in 1706. It now houses Kinsale Regional Museum where you can see interesting items from a bygone

age: artifacts from all sorts of diff erent trades including a blacksmith’s forge, authentic parts from ancient ships, costumes, lace and needlework from the Convent School by the Gift houses which was open up to half a century ago.

Upstairs, the interesting panelled courtroom was the setting for the inquest into the loss of the liner Lusitania off the Old Head of Kinsale. Th is report, together with fascinating documents in which townspeople are reprimanded for minor off enses, can be read in this room.

Southwell Gift Almshouses: Built in 1782 by Sir Robert Southwell, given aft er his death into the care of the Bishop of Cork and his successors.

1916 Memorial:Kinsale History Society has commissioned a memorial to commemorate the men and women of Kinsale and District who participated in the War of Independence. Unveiled on Easter Sunday 2016, the memorial is located at the Town Park.

Charles Fort: Perhaps the best known attraction in the area, can be found on the road beyond Summer Cove. It is open all year round and is one of the fi nest surviving examples of a 17th Century Star Fort, ie. star-shaped. Much of the construction which was begun in 1678 still remains. Th e fort has two enormous bastions overlooking the harbour, and three looking inland.

Th e well was derelict for close to 100 years until local volunteers set about restoring it. On May 26th 2013 (Trinity Sunday) the well was blessed and re-dedicated by the local clergy. Th e practice of walking around the well in a clockwise direction, called a pattern or rounds, was re-established.

James Fort: Th e fi rst Star Fort built to protect the town was named aft er James II when he landed here in his eff orts to regain the throne of England. In 1601 the fort was occupied by the Spanish, and aft er the Battle of Kinsale it was rebuilt because of its defensive value. Aft er the construction of Charles Fort, its importance declined although there is still much to see, and fi ne views can be had of the area from this point.

Th e Stone of Destiny: On the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Kinsale, the councils of Cork County and Kinsale erected an Irish Chieft ains

chair at Millwater. Executed by the well-known Cork sculptor, Ken Th ompson, it is composed of stones brought from the four Provinces of Ireland to acknowledge the participation of those who joined the chieft ains at Kinsale on that momentous day.

Th e empty chair is a universal symbol of loss, at Millwater it stands where Ireland lost control of its destiny, its heroes and the treasures of its ageless Gaelic civilisation and for the many empty chairs in Irish homes as a result of famine and emigration in the centuries of Empire.

9/11 Garden of Remembrance: Located at Ringfi nnan, Kinsale, the Garden of Remembrance was the idea of the late Kathleen Cait Murphy. Ms. Murphy wanted to provide a memorial to the fi remen who perished on September 11th 2001 along with their chaplain, Fr. Michael Judge, a personal friend of hers during her 30+ years in New York. A tree was planted for each of the 343 fi remen and Fr. Judge on her land at Ringfi nnan.

Th e Old Head of Kinsale: Long popular for its scenic splendour, has been battered into many spectacular formations by millennia of storms. Th e panoramic views in all directions can now be fully appreciated from the parapet walk at the top of the newly restored Signal Tower which stands on the highest point of the peninsula. Th e view to the south overlooks the Golf Links and the magnifi cent Old Head Lighthouse.

Lusitania Museum/Old Head Signal Tower Heritage Centre : Th e fi rst Signature Discovery Point at the southern end of the Wild Atlantic Way. Th e Signal Tower is one of the 81 such Towers built along the coast from Malin Head to Dublin in 1804. Th ey were built by the British military in response to the threat of Napoleonic invasion of England through the ‘back door’. Each Tower can be seen from the two on either side so that signals based on Flags and Balls and an agreed code could be set up to pass the vital message to Dublin Castle in the shortest possible time - less than 2 hours from Bantry to Dublin it is claimed. Th e Cunard Luxury liner, the Lusitania, was torpedoed and sunk on May 7th 1915. Th e wreck lies in 90 metres of water about 20 Km due south of the Old Head Lighthouse, making the Old Head the nearest point of land to the wreck site.

Lusitania MonumentYou can now park in the grounds of the Signal Tower and walk to the nearby WAW signpost and photo point and proceed along the path directly into the grounds of the Lusitania monument. Th is beautiful sculpture was placed here 20 years ago to commemorate the victims of the Lusitania tragedy. Each year on May 7th a commemoration is held at the monument.Th e Blue Flag beaches of Garrettstown and Garrylucas, at the foot of the Old Head peninsula, bring to mind for many the long beautiful stretches of sand and sea with associated memories of carefree days and glorious sunshine. Many watersports activities are now available at Garrettstown. We hope you’ll have the sort of holiday in Kinsale and surrounding area that will make you want to come back year aft er year.
