R TIDE e Rotary Club of Tiburon-Belvedere Chartered June 27, 1977 Wednesday, April 18, 2012 Meetings: 12:15 p.m., Wednesday, Tiburon Peninsula Club, 1600 Mar West St., Tiburon KUDOS TO THE CREW Pledge Bill Lindqvist Drawing Noch Callaway Sergeant at Arms Klaus Meinberg THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Bill Lindqvist was in a little village in Virginia called Appomattox and visited the courthouse where Robert E. Lee surrendered. He shared the following quote from Confucius, which he considers relevant to leaders today: “A superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.” SILENT REFLECTION President Barbara Newhouse led us in a moment of silence in memory of the five victims of the tragic sailing accident involving a boat from the San Francisco Yacht Club last weekend. VISITORS AND GUESTS Jan Mark was a visitor from the Rotary Club of Helsingborg-Landborgen, Sweden. He is visiting his sister in Mill Valley. He lives in the southern part of Sweden, close to Denmark, and hopes we will visit his club. He presented President Barbara with a banner for our club and said,“You’re welcome to Sweden, all of you.”Ulla Niehoff was Jan’s guest. Dave Albert introduced Eva Buxton, a botanist from Tiburon, who is responsible for our choice of a second project for Rotary at Work Day. Eileen Aspin was Dave’s guest. She lives in Sausalito and is planning to move to Tiburon. Mark Jansheski introduced his guest, Derrick Casey, from Folsom, who is interested in doing some building in this area and would like to make this his home. Speaker Brooke Halsey’s guests were his son Brennen Halsey and Laurel Doyle. Both are interns with the Tiburon Salmon Institute. ANNOUNCEMENTS Barbara Bruns Blake announced that Joe Lavigne is recovering at home after having a long-awaited cochlear implant. She passed around a card. Barbara also asked us to sign a card with our condolences for Joe’s Corintian Island neighbor Anne Kasanin, who lost her son Marc in the sailing accident. Charlie Oewel asked us to respond to a survey, which asks what we want to see on the club’s website. •“We’ll have to pay up now for losing the blood match,” said Charlie Oewel. Our club will host a picnic for the Mill Valley club and the Boy Scouts who helped with the blood drive on Saturday, May 19. Mark your calendars for some fun and fellowship. Dave Albert reported that Rotary at Work Day will be Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our first choice for a project is “spiffing up” the landscaping around the Railroad-Ferry Depot Museum and removing dandelions from the grass nearby. If we have time and enough volunteers, we will also remove broom from the town’s open space. Tools will be provided. Volunteers should have their own gloves and bring good humor. The work at the museum won’t be strenuous; broom busting will be more so. “These work days are a lot of fun,”said President Barbara. “It’s a great opportunity to wear your Rotary shirts.” George Landau noted that the dandelion is the University of Rochester’s flower, and it’s edible. Don Newhouse passed around a sheet asking people to sign up for the Interact dinner at the Branson School on Sunday, May 6. It takes place of our regular Wednesday meeting and is a fundraiser for Polio Plus. BEL AIRE-ROTARY PARTNERSHIP Don Newhouse and Charlie Oewel reported on our club’s partnership with Bel Aire School.“We’re finally up to phase two. It’s really exciting,”Charlie said. Last year, he
