Twenty one days of glorious colour, line, shapes along with 36

participants and two dedicated, experienced and enthusiastic Resource

Persons was a dream come true. The course took shape in its own

creative path with the teachers emerging from cocoons of self

consciousness to express their creative ideas through collage, painting,

music and even dance.

Every theory lecture was followed by demonstration and activity. Every

demonstration by the individual participant was duplicated by the

others. At every moment the alert Resource persons were there, to

guide, admonish and praise.

It was also twenty one days of exposure to the varied talent available in

Bhubaneswar with artists and lecturers of eminence coming forward to

exchange their ideas and experiences with the trainees.

The Art Exhibition is the end result of all the work done during this in-

service course. ZIET Bhubaneswar hall has come alive with a riot of

colours, mediums, materials and genres.

I can only express my gratitude to Mr Anutosh Deb and Mr Arun Kumar

Jana, TGT (Art Education) from K V Maligaon and K V Fort William

respectively for their effortless planning and execution which made

these twenty one days pass like a dream.

MMEESSSSAAGGEE

Undoubtedly what vestiges of a civilization are in the form of art and cultural

heritage as architecture and monuments. Yet! The urge to keep up with the physical

existence of the human race is in its struggle to win over nature and contribution to

artistic pursuits remain as a development of the intellectual mind that run through,

parallel with this race for survival.

Today, an Artistic pursuit is seldom restricted to mere satisfying an individual’s urge

to harness the creative instinct. Art and artistic pursuits is now associated closely as

a medium of social urgency and mechanical juxtaposition of the taught and tutor.

Passing over of a mere technical time framed format in a milieu of spreading of

artistic values and knowhow is becoming a social necessity rather than nurturing an

individualistic inborn latent talent. The social framework demanding the all round

creativity of the child is often seen as a result of peer pressure, scholastics and the

inert talent.

Our rich traditional ‘guru shishya parampara’ so identical to the Indian school of Art

and Culture through ages is what is the need of the hour. Art Education would create

an environment to promote the development of latent talents through a continuous

development.

We as facilitators of Art Education have to shoulder this responsibility to strive to

create an atmosphere where the school premises would generate a positive energy and

ambience to boost creativity and a passion to artistic sensibilities among the students

and the staff. An atmosphere of bubbling creativity around would not only motivate

the students to think positive but also instill a rich, subtle and a passionate mind to

be better human beings.

An in-service course is a culmination of this ‘school of thoughts’ to evolve a better

understanding of the ground realities with the adaptation of the 21st Century skills.

Ideas that evolved during the 21 days of thorough and meticulous planning and rich

discourses with the KVS ZIET Bhubaneswar, Faculty and the renowned Artists as guest

lecturers, sharing diversified ideas had been a very rich and vibrant learning for all.

Calligraphy

Demonstration by Mahendra Mahajan

Calligraphy is the art of writing. A simple way of writing especially for the students is by tying two pencils together. Sketch pens and other writing tools also can be used Instead of writing with a calligraphic pen this is the tool that can be used.

This should be held in 45degrees angle and then the words can be written. When the hand is dragged in clockwise and written it is Roman script and when the hand is dragged in the anti-clockwise and written it is Devanagari script.

Before actually wiring letters one must practice how to hold the pencil tool and move the hand in different directions and make standing lines, curved lines, oval shape and different types of strokes. For writing the letters two parallel lines should be drawn so that the letters are equal in size. The hand should be moved from top to bottom. Practice is very important. Consistent practice will give crispness and precision in writing.

WHY ART EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS?

By B. Padma Reddy (TGT Art Education)

K.V. Kurnool. Hyderabad Region

To make children bold, fearless, creative, expressive, conscientious, independent and responsible are

some of the prerequisites of schools which are also the first and most important formal training

institutions for a child. Art education at this level plays a vital role in this regard as among other things

that are mentioned later, it also helps as an active way of learning throughout the school life.

Art is a medium of expression. Right from the prehistoric periods the cave man – for his basic needs of

survival indulged in art – creating ‘cave paintings’ across the world. Every civilization and society

since then has had its own art which emerged out of the socio political and economic structure

prevailing. The Egyptians, the Chinese, the Mesopotamians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Mughals, the

Rajputs and numerous others including the tribal cultures have left behind treasures of art and artifacts

that are great sources of world history and testimony to the wonderful human spirit and shouldering

passion - proving the necessity of art for mankind all along.

Today the contemporary art scene is flourishing with immense opportunities for artists to showcase

their talents. The number of art schools across the country has increased fourfold; there are hundreds

of art galleries and private studios of artists. Scholarships and residencies world over are inviting artists

and students for participation, National and international art fairs are avenues that generate crores of

revenue and not to speak of auctions that have taken paintings to the level of big investments. Artists

are honored, respected and revered. Indian art is being recognized world over. M.F.Hussain who

passed away recently was commissioned by the king of Qatar for a Multi million dollar project on

which he was working just before his death. He is but one example. Young artists like Subodh Gupta

…a railway guard’s son from Bihar has taken art to a different level and put India on the world map.

Hyderabad itself can boast of many success stories of rags to riches .Still in relation to our population it

is a minority.

Since the inception of the initial Kendriya Vidyalyas of the KV Sangathan, Art education has been an

integral part of the school curriculum. Its status since then has been privileged and being taken to

better levels from time to time by way of freedom with responsibility and autonomy given to the art

teacher and thereby to the students. To recognize the importance of art has been a marked and

important merit of the Kendriya Vidyalayas that has set them apart from other schools. Time and again

the necessity of art and its importance in schools has been discussed and debated but the progress in

Page 54: R RREEEP PPO OORRT TT &&& SSSU UUPPPPOORRTT MMMA AANNNUUAALLLzietbbsr.org/wif/our-publication/17.pdf · R RREEEP PPO OORRT TT &&& SSSU UUPPPPOORRTT MMMA AANNNUUAALLL KENDRIYA

this direction has always and more so in the recent times been overshadowed by the need to excel in

academics and the formatted careers that are chartered by them. However, despite the changing

economics, the mushrooming of multinationals and corporate art has also made a place for itself on the

economic spot apart from the cultural significance it will always have and as such certain

recommendations for its implementation and enhancement in schools is welcoming.

Recently the National curriculum framework 2005 too lays emphasis on the importance of art

education and asserts that ‘art as a subject at all stages of schooling is recommended because the goal

of art education is to promote aesthetic and personal awareness and the ability to express oneself in

different forms.’ Art – drawing and painting is the most simplest and basic forms of expression for a

child. It is a medium that encourages the child towards constructivism, self expression, innovation,

exploration, observation, patience, contemplation and experimentation. It is also a medium that

enhances the uninhabited thought process that eventually culminated in creating an identity for oneself.

The NCF also makes this important observation that ‘ the arts should not be reduced as tools for

enhancing the prestige of the school on occasions like annual day , independence day or during

inspection or encourage arts of superficial and popular nature that encourage dance and song

performances that may entertain but have little aesthetic quality. Instead, all possible energies and

resources should be concentrated in nurturing artistic capabilities and creating cultural and artistic

awareness among the children. So that, their lives are enriched not only in their school years but also

through out their lives.’

Here the role of the administrators and the art teaches is as crucial for the artistic and aesthetic

development of the child. The energies and resources of the art teacher should to put to maximum use

to identify, channelize and encourage the children consistently with regard to their talents, interests and

capabilities. To allow them to develop both - in playful as well as well as in a disciplined manner

exploring themselves with diverse materials and allowing them to experiment with many forms of

expression. The talents of the art teacher should not be limited to decorating the Vidyalaya or co-

coordinating the painting of walls, doors and windows but should be put to maximum use for the

creative aesthetic and intellectual development of the children. Art is a passion, the duty of the art

teacher is to kindle this passion and keep it burning in children. Imagine a world without art…without

color…..without beauty. Undoubtedly the magnitude of enjoying life is enhanced by the relevance of

art that certainly makes the world a better place to live in. Children during the school tenure are at their

creative best. Creating awareness and providing them proper guidance will mark their individual

development…an overall development that will create intelligent, confident, thinking and quality

individuals for the country which has always been the idea of the Kendriya Vidyalayas .
