With each season of the year, our Activities Committee, led by Lecette Ferguson, has put together a terrific event that so many of us have been able to enjoy. During the spring season we had the Easter Egg Hunt. This event was attended by close to 250 people, with 2300 eggs stuffed for almost 150 children to hunt. There is something about observing a little tyke holding their basket putting eggs in it that is so sweet and innocent. There is always something for everyone to enjoy. As a parent, it is just a joy watching your child look for those little plastic eggs or hold that live bunny for a photo. As the summer heated up we had the 4th of July Party. This is by far the best-attended event in HMR. Even with the bad weather we had this year, there was a total of 325 friends and neighbors that attended. There is always such great food – our HMR Burners are by far the best around. Also, there are many games for the adults as well as the kids to play. The daddy-donut race is one of my favorites. It’s amazing what competitive spirit a dad can maintain while their bottom is stuck in a pink tube in 3 foot of water desperately scrambling to make it to the other side. Now that the fall season is upon us, the Activities Committee is working to get our Halloween hayride up and going. Last year we had 12 trailers, 275 people, 180 of which were trick-or-treaters. It was a great success! Each child took home more candy than they could carry – and plenty more than their parents hoped they would ever eat. I think we were still snacking on Halloween candy well into summer. It is wonderful to see what great costumes the kids, and the parents, come up with. I know with the growth in HMR this year we can probably expect to add even more trailers. To end the year, with the winter season, we have our Holiday Social for the adults and Cookies and Cocoa with Santa for the kids. Last year’s Holiday Social was the first one that was off-site Letter from the President By Kelly Wilde to allow for accommodation of more people. It was a very elegant and wonderful way to visit with residents at High Meadow Ranch. If you were unable to attend, you really missed out on a very special evening. The next day we got to have a special visit from Santa so the kids could have an opportunity to tell him what they wanted for Christmas. It is so magical watching a child’s eyes light up when Santa read from his special book about the good things he knows the children have done during the year. Why, you ask, is she re-hashing over all these events?? Well, as all good things must come to an end, the two-year term for the Activities Committee is over at the end of this year. They have put together such wonderful events that I felt it worthy to remind everyone of just how blessed we are here at HMR. With the ‘retirement’ of this committee comes the opportunity and necessity for a new crew to come in and take their place for the next two-year term. Having watched Lecette lead her activities team, I can honestly say she will be turning over a how-to instruction book that will make the process very easy for the in-coming group. It is also important to bring in new ideas and new faces to this role. Each new committee has added such great things to our neighborhood. You get to work with your friends because you pick your own committee. You also get to meet new people in the neighborhood with new ideas that keep the activities exciting. The activities evolve as our neighborhood evolves. This is a very important role in our community and I am asking for help. Please look into your hearts and remember how much you enjoyed participating in these events. I cannot imagine HMR without them. I know there are many groups of friends. When you are sitting over coffee and chatting with your friends, I hope you will realize that this could be a challenge for you in deciding new ideas for the activities committee. Bringing the neighborhood together is a luxury we have all benefited by and would like to see continue. Please contact me at [email protected]g if you are interested in fulfilling this most important position in our community.

ACC NOTESBy Norm Walker

Another month and I have another opportunity to highlight certain provisions of the Covenants in our community. As you drive around our Community you may have noticed signs of various sizes and quantities that are advertising varying purposes. Therefore, I think it may be instructive to mention what the requirements are in HMR. With the exception of the Declarant, while they own any portion of the Subdivision, and the Association and its Committees for general CommunitypurposesnosignofanykindmaybedisplayedonanyLot in public view, or in the Common Areas, with several exceptions. Builders may display one sign of not more than sixteen (16) square feet on a Lot to advertise the Lot and any residential structure situated thereon during the sales and construction period. Owners may not place “for sale” signs on their Lots for five years after date of purchase for unimproved Lots. Owners, or their agents, may display one sign of not more than nine (9) Square feet on an Improved Lot (i.e., having a residence) advertising for sale or rent, or after five years to advertise the sale of the Lot. From time to time, Owners regarding maintenance of the ditches in front of their property, specifically who is responsible for maintenance thereof have raised questions. The answer is that each Owner is responsible for maintaining all drainage ways (including the road ditches adjacent to his Lot), whether natural or man made, including but not limited to the planting and mowing of grass, removal of debris or sediment, and clearing of any obstructions or impediments which may prevent the free flow of water without erosion. Historically, the Association has provided mowing of all ditches and roadways in front of unimproved Lots in the Subdivision. Once a residence has been constructed and occupied, mowing of the roadways and ditches in front of their property then becomes the responsibility of the Owner/occupant. From the spooky world of the ACC, we wish a safe and Happy Halloween to all Owners and their families in HMR.

Ladies Lunch Bunch We are planning something special for this month! The arrangements have been made to tour the historic Liendo Plantation House on Friday, November 3rd. After the tour we will have lunch at The Secret Garden Tea Room in Hempstead. Our tour of Liendo begins at 10:00a.m.. If you would like to car pool, let’s meet at the Recreation Center with plans to leave at 9:00. The event planner for Liendo needs to know by October 20th how many of us there will be. I know this is early but she needs time to schedule tour guides and such. Please RSVP by October 19th to either Shirley Holloway or myself. In December we plan on going to Old Town Spring. We need to check around as to the best place to have lunch for us. I will send out an email after we have made our final decisions. Plan on eating and doing some Christmas shopping! ~ Terri Gurley & Shirley Holloway [email protected] & [email protected]

DEPUTY CONSTABLE CHARLOTE HAMM and DEPUTY K-9 “ZEUS”

By Charlote Hamm Montgomery County Pct. 5 I received my canine,“Zeus”, this summer. “Zeus” was purchased by MISD and was donated to Constable David Hill’s office. I am contracted through MISD and “Zeus” and I are assigned to the schools. “Zeus” is a deputy and also my partner. “Zeus” went through intensive training for narcotics and explosives. The training was approximately three months at a company named Global that is located in San Antonio, Texas. Upon the completion of “Zeus” training, I was sent to San Antonio to train with the K-9. Canine units and handlers have to be compatible or the canines will not work for the handlers. I was in intense training with my canine for three weeks. It took a lot of dedication. Each officer in training how to trust one another and the officers and canines had to be on the training ground from 6 am until 5 pm seven days a week. “Zeus” and I were evaluated alone and together. After the successful completion of the course, “Zeus” was certified on July 14th. I also received my certification. “Zeus” and I must re-certify every year and this can take three days. We train with other K-9 units from surrounding agencies once a week for four hours. My K-9 is very excited when we go to a campus to search for narcotics and explosives. He immediately knows it is time to work and his dedication is recognized by everyone. I believe “Zeus” is a great asset to our school district and we try to visit two schools a day in my district. We stay very busy and our goal is to keep all of our schools safe and drug free.

PEGGY’S CORNERAnimal Control Truck

Since I do a lot of volunteer work at Abandoned Animal Rescue I am always watching out for stray animals. I stopped and talked to an animal control person last week and asked “Which subdivision he was patrolling”. He informed me “It was High Meadow Ranch and that he had several calls to the Animal Control Center complaining about loose dogs”. Please keep your dogs on leases at all times. Also, obtain a tag with the name of the dog, your telephone no and name. These tags can be purchased at several pet stores and other stores for a reasonable price. Be sure you have the rabies tag also on the dog. If you are walking your dog take along a small shovel and plastic bag. Ifyouaremissingyourdogandthedogdoesnotappearinadaycall Animal Control, telephone no. 936-442-7738. If you are riding your bike, motor bike, using askate board, driving a go-cart or driving a golf cart and youseeanimalsoutsideintheyard, please, pleasedo not ride up and down the street and keepturningaroundandcomingbackto tease the dogs. This is very impolite and f rus t ra t ing to dogs or anyanimals.

FALLEN ARCHESGiven the wear and tear that we put on our feet, it is not surprising that when unsupported, feet begin to break down and flatten, resulting in “fallen” arches. More importantly, we see patients with painful and disabling deformities that can result from fallen arches- for example, bunions, hammertoes, heel spurs, arch strain, and swelling around the arch and the ankle area. If you experience the signs and symptoms of fallen arches, don’t ignore them. Call today for an appointment.

HMR Canasta GroupBy Anna Meyer and Shirley Holloway

We are searching for new neighbors and friends to join us the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Hickory Hollow Restaurant in Magnolia to play canasta. We will begin playing at 9:30 and end at 2:00. We had three tables at our kick-off meeting in September and we are hoping to add a couple more tables in October. If you have any questions or would like to be a part of the group as a member or substitute, call Anna Meyer at 281-252-8010 or send [email protected] or call Shirley Holloway at 281-259-3949 or e mail [email protected]. If you have never played canasta before, do not hesitate to come, as the majority are novices, and we are learning together. It is a fun, easy game. We would love for you to join us. Thanks.

Activities Update for OctoberBy Lecette Ferguson

The 6th Annual High Meadow Ranch Halloween Hayride is upon us. If you have not already signed up, then please do so as soon as possible. The event will take place Saturday, October 28. All trailer pullers and ‘trick-or-treaters’ will meet at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Course at 6:45pm. Space on the trailers is limited. All trick-or-treaters wishing to be included on the hayride must sign up by Wednesday, October 25. We cannot guarantee a spot on the hayride after this deadline. If you wish to be a ‘trick or treater’ on the hay ride, then call Shelly Gary at 281-252-0202 to reserve your space. We will take up to two requests of families you wish to ride with on the trailer. At least one parent or responsible adult must accompany theirchildren. If you have a trailer or can pull a trailer, please call Lecette Ferguson at 281-259-7299. If you will be able to give candy on the route, please call Kelly Wilde at 281-356-4010 so that we can get your house on the route. Any of the above reservations may also be sent via email to [email protected]. Other important dates for HMR Activities to mark on your calendar include the HMR Holiday Social and Cookies and Cocoa with Santa. Both of these events will occur on the weekend of December 8th. The HMR Holiday Social will be held at Best Friends Gardens (where we had it last year in Field Store Community). You can visit their website for more information at www.bestfriendscatering.com. The event will take place on Friday evening from 7:00pm till 11:00pm. Please note that this date has been revised from the previous newsletter article in August. We are still trying to nail down Santa’s schedule, as he is very busy this time of year. Exact date and time will be determined as soon as we get it from him.
